I love how he spends most of the episode freaking out about dying inside of the shield because he can't get food or drink through it - he can't even take it off because his inherent cowardice makes the gizmo stay on to "protect him" - and in the penultimate scene, someone suggests *he* do something dangerous because the shield will protect him... ...and it *INSTANTLY* drops off like leech burned with a cigarette.
It's so cute how they're acting like like little boys with a new toy. The way that Sheppard says "In the leg!" and I also love the slightly dirty look that Liz gives him. Priceless!

The shield is thoughtcontroled so it shuts off when you "tell" it to. later he is volunteered for a situation that might get him killed because he has the shield and therefore the best chances of survival. And it wasn't because finances were tight, it was that Sci-Fi would take SGU, the new show - because it was cheaper - less action sequences that require heavy CGI and also because CGI has come a long way from where it was a few years back (I am talking from 2004-2009). The actors were also not paid as much because, 1. It is a new show, and 2. Most of the actors are not very well known. So, "Siffy" guarenteed 2 seasons for SGU (because of previous support of SGA and SG1)

A show can be cancelled during production, so having a show cancelled before it airs -though rare- isn't out of the realm of possibility. SGU left a bad taste in viewers mouths during the beginning, and the people that liked it weren't enough to keep it on the air. So even though one person's opinion can't take a show off the air, if that opinion is shared with several million people it will deny those that like it the pleasure of viewing it.
