  • Join us on our apocalyptic storm sailing adventure ;) ! This year in March, we left with a total crew of four from Toulon and headed to Corsica. We used a storm jib and a sea drogue to slow us down.

    Good filming but the video is ruined by stupid music. Let us hear the wind blow.

    Comment ruiner une vidéo avec la musique au lieu d écouter la nature les vagues ...le vent ...ou parfois le silence ..

      C'est pas faux, mais malheureusement la gopro utilisé dans sa boite n'enregistre aucun son utilisable...

    Its a shame the music blotted out the sound and the people didnt speak into the mic.

      Yeah, most of the footage was taken with a gopro inside its case so there was no sound unfortunately... Definitely need to upgrade to better filming gear! thanks for your comment :)

    Why you decided to use a drogue? Was the boat not easy to control even with the storm jib only? By the way which kind of drogue did you use? Jordan series drogue?

    • @sailsofavalon6482
      @sailsofavalon6482  5 років тому +2

      yes thats right I decided to use a drogue because the boat was broaching when the waves became really big. we have done a few surf over 16 knots, even if it was fun the boat was difficult to control at that speed, and we even got 2 knockdown after broaching at the end of very fast surfs. even if it doesnt show in the video the waves were close to 20 feet winds were forecasted to be 60knots ( my anemometer blocks around 35knots so I am unsure of the exact windspeed)
      I used long mooring lines with plenty of knots in them . I find it to work great, cheap, solid, reliable and easy to install. But I heard some really good things of the jordan series drogue and I would definitely want to try it.

      @@sailsofavalon6482 Thousands thanks for your exahustive and interesting answer. That settles the matter to me. You know there are a number of skilled sailors who are not in favour of using warps (like in your case) or drogues, on the basis that they are difficult to use (especially to withdraw) and that they hamper the manouvrability of the boat. Of course that also depends on the type of boat, so one has to make tests. Anyway your case shows clearly that without them the boat (and the crew) was in serious danger.

      @@lungarotta No worries! It's always a pleasure to talk about those things. Yeah you're right, I've seen that it's an ongoing topic of disagreement amongst sailors. In my opinion It's worth it to have some aboard and to try it if necessary. Yeah I guess it depends a lot on the boat and the seastate as for me the waves were very short and high, often breaking down. I didnt find it particulary difficult to withdraw but you can always heave to or slow down the boat as the wind will calm down... This would be putting less pressure on the drogue and make it easier to bring it back in.
      Agreed, we all felt much safer with them, and didnt get any knockdown after installing them... The average boat speed went from 7.5 to 6 knots and the maximum speed went from 18 knots to approximately 9 knots.

      @@lungarotta Warps are easy to withdraw if you tie both ends to different cleats. To withdraw simply untie one end, the warps stream straight out behind you, and recover them like a mooring line. Fair winds!

    • @sailsofavalon6482
      @sailsofavalon6482  5 років тому

      yes, It's a storm jib on a removable inner forestay which is different than the one used for the genoa (furler)

      Sur les vidéos la météo parait toujours beaucoup moins impressionant, malgré l'ambiance ciel bleue au niveau des vitesses de vent les prévisions météo donnaient 40 noeuds avec 60 en rafale (vitesse max du bateau 16 noeuds dans un surf sous tourmentin avant de larguer des trainards)

    Personally I do not enjoy that strength of wind and wave, even when running. I might have enjoyed this video a bit more from the safety of my armchair, and shared your exhilaration , if the music had not set me on edge, it was brash rock music which was unsuitable and cannot have reflected the mood of the sailors..
