I think he was judging how far away from touching it was when it sparks. It's about 1 kilovolt per mm.

He can tell by the violence of the spark. The loudness and brightness increases with voltage, and he has worked with high voltage enough to recognize roughly the range of the spark.
Make no mistake, that hurt like a bitch getting shocked by. That is stun gun territory.

I can appreciate people making experiment videos, but without actual scientific exploration those videos have little benefit other than generating views. I wish more people would spend the time to understand why a certain experiment yields a particular result (or doesn't). Thank you Mehdi for doing that.

I think it was like half past eleven in the beginning of the video and at the end it was like half past four in the evening. Vanlalchhanhima Vanchhawng - 🔴 Theory has its place, but not as a primary source of information.
I agree... how something works, verses what we can do with it, is a lapse in teaching.
I like using the Leyden jar concept in the form of a large PVC pipe. It works far better, no water is required, and it’s easy to install aluminum foil on both the inside and outside of the capacitor.
Not to mention that the dielectric properties of PVC is extremely high. Making it ideal to build capacitors with.
A series of these advanced capacitors of six or more at 18” diameter by 36” length, is ample to generate small balls of lightning. (Ball lightning) when applied correctly.

If you fold the edges of the aluminium foil about 5mm in, that will increase the radius on the edges and reduce partial discharges. Meaning the charges will have a harder time flying away.

Wouldnt a full roll-over edge be better? That would prevent the charge from ever getting to the actual "edge" where it can unintentionally discharge, right?
It would discharge/flow back to self before it ever made it to the edge to build up enough to cause the discharge we are looking to avoid, perhaps?

Used to make capacitors from baker's foil and landscaping plastic. Roll into a spiral, then stuff into a pipe suck the air out, and fill with transformer oil. Worked nicely for tesla coils because the foil ends were combined to form a lug on each side. You can also make a spiral line pulse generator. Just roll as normal with the inner portion having an extra 4 to 18 turns of foil inside. When discharged the current wave becomes ultra high voltage.

The oldest capacitor, (Mister "Electro-boom"), is actually the Ark of the Covenant. It was two gold boxes, separated by gopher wood. So when the Jews carried it through the dsesert, it picked up the negative charge from the desert floor, and soon the Ark was no longer being carried by the Ark Carriers, IT WAS CARRYING THEM! The Bible, (and the Koran, and the Catholic Bible, and the Penteteuch), also says the same thing. The negative charge from the Ark-capacitor repelled the charge from the desert floor, and carried the Ark, and it's carriers. OH YES, the Egyptians actually had capacitors hundreds of years before the Jews, (the Egyptians taught the Jews how to make capacitors.)
