Take a standard 10 gallon aquarium, load it with aluminum sheet, glass plate, aluminum sheet, glass plate ... until the aquarium is full, then connect the aluminum sheets in sequence: 2-3, 4-5, 6-7 etc. Run large-gauge high-voltage silicone wire from the sheets at either end (sheets 1 and, say, 126), then fill the aquarium with oil. Repeat 49 times. Stack your aquariums to make using them convenient, and connect the aquariums to your diodes, using the aquariums in place of those little blue capacitors. This will produce a longer/stronger spark, although it could take hours to charge. Your transformer will get very warm, so putting it in oil, and cooling the oil, will help. Be careful, as this is Big League high voltage. When you get bored with disintegrating objects in your house, you can split the supply into stages and build a real rail gun. PS: take any fish out of those aquariums first.
Newb rail guns use a single pulse, presumably because calculating tiny (like a Chihuahua) delays is math, and math is hard. Really. That really is the reason. Serious rail guns are staged like coil guns, using the first rail to prime the next rail. Also, rails 2+ are accelerating plasma (effectively) so the slug leaving rail 1 has to pierce a sacrificial envelope that contains a temporary vacuum encasing subsequent rails, which is expensive. Early space-based weapons will be pumped rail guns. See if I'm wrong.
Why?? You didn't consider "Hey, couldn't such a cascading rail gun also be used as a means of propulsion in a vacuum, with ice serving as the accelerated mass?" I mean, if you do the math, even one gram of water could produce an enormous amount of thrust, infinitely scalable to limits bounded by the structural strength of the rails and available joules. It could do that with infinite control. Watch any Roadrunner cartoon where the coyote straps a rocket on his back, and you'll grasp why control is a sweet perq. You'll want to leave orbit carefully. And tangentially. Cell providers and satellite cable vendors get cranky when you punch 100 holes in their gear. One man's tool is another, less-imaginative man's weapon, I always say.
