You explain the concept of longevity of these trends. I work on boats. I often find people modify them in either cheap or trendy ways that after an inevitably short time period they are either broken, worn out, have fallen off or simply don't work any more or are ugly as sin because they aren't durable. Rarely do these "fix your home for less than a nickel" DIY shows mention durability. However, we're all going to have to endure the poor quality of these ideas and once the initial excitement of the project is over no one has the motivation to fix the project when it starts to fall apart. Effectively making your project look like a project rather than a finished home. I know this from personal experience. I am guilty of this myself. Thanks for trying to educate people of these things!
As someone who lives in Japan, I know that none of these tips will apply to the already extremely optimized tiny kitchens here, but I'm still watching with pleasure lol
Hi, are there any videos you can recommend that discuss Japanese kitchens in depth? I'm putting together a tiny kitchen in a small house and could use some ideas on space optimization.
@user-kpkxgtj sorry, I didn't find any English language videos like that... I guess that means there's a market. But if you copy paste 狭いキッチン 使いやすく you'll find some good tips!
@@user-kpkxgtjhi, I don't know how tiny your kitchen is going to be but if you're American consider that for me as an Italian all the kitchens shown in this video were considered big, so you may find useful info even from Europe or non-American places in general. America has incredibly lager houses than the rest of the world
@@rita7070 I'm not American, but you do have a point - even "tiny" houses somehow seem to have spacious kitchens. I will look into European kitchens, thank you.
I love your videos. You're so articulate, and direct, while seeming friendly and helpful. I've used so many of your videos in updating our old house. Thank you!
I love your videos but my style is vintage/cottage core however I am trying to turn into a minimalist and have been able to transform your ideas into my decluttering journey. The cottage core look is pretty maximalist I would love to see how a video on how to turn into minimalist style? What do you need to create the cozy style without the clutter. I know it’s not your video style but I thought it would be worth the ask.
thing in colors you find cozy? curtains and table cloth comes to my mind as an affordable change. I like minimalist stily too, thought I often fall behind with tyding and cleaning 😅, now that I can afford it I started getting the things I need in a cute style as I like a cute minimalist style.
I have a 5’ x 8’ seniors apt kitchen. 1). I took an extra fridge shelf out, put it on the top of my fridge with a few inches jutting out past the top. ( the shelf is heavy, but I also hold it down with extra big pots and colanders). I then added a pot lid rack from Lee Valley Tools to hang off this rack, and some IKEA “S” hooks to the edge. 2) the single veg drawer in the fridge was stupidly too wide, so I took that out and found 3 containers at Dollarama, and they work must better. 3) one side of my kitchen is taken up by an apt sized fridge and stove. I add “counter” by covering 2 elements with a narrow grill pan. I have considered moving the fridge out into the living room so a proper drawer unit can go in beside the stove.
You sir, are brilliant!! Although you're explaining basic concepts that we all should already know most people don't. If they do already know it they ignore it in the interest of being popular or doing trendy things. You explain clearly & concisely the cons and negative results of these ridiculous trends in a way that blends just enough opinion and knowledge to create interest and thought on these matters. I subscribed immediately. I found myself agreeing with most or all of your points intensely. Thank you again. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
This video is amazing! thank you! lots of great tips! I would love if you could also talk about kitchen floors, what colours to chose, what materials... it's what I am finding most dificulty choosing. Thank you
Thanks for your videos, Reynard. May I request you to give tips on how to arrange furniture and decor around a large living room? My living room is rectangular in shape and around 120 sqm. It's just a living room, nothing else. Any tips?
This is interesting, but my small kitchen is in an apartment where I can't change any of the fixtures or appliances. It's got deep corner cabinets where there's no reasonable access, no free floor space for a trash can, and a lot of ceiling cabinets that I can't reach. (We have a step stool in the closet, but since everything else is there, getting any particular item of it ends up spilling everything, so it's not convenient.) I feel like there's some way to handle it, but every time I try, I end up making it worse. I'd love to turn one of the cabinets into a little pantry, though again, the height is weird, since the working height--the places it's at least sort of easy to reach and look at--are the only counter space. (It is also weirdly designed, with deep corners that are impossible to reach.)
Perhaps a pretty foldable step stool and hang them on the wall or side of cabinet? Makes it much more accessible that way. Deep corner cabinets are indeed annoying - I find those wheelie bins/containers to be useful here to store supplies, and it can go deep. Plus a turntable/lazy susan.
side note: your are supposed to NOT rinse your dishes before putting them into the dishwasher 😅. technology connections made great videos about this topics for anyone interested
i don't thin'k having a mirror as a backsplash is a good idea; mirror get dirty way to quick (i have to clean the one in my bathroom every day >.< and at least in a bathroom there is no oily splashes, just water) I'm mostly watching your video to take some notes for the renovation of an old country house. The kitchen is one of my main "issue": you enter the house directly in the kitchen; on the same wall you have the window and on opposite sides, 2 doors (so you can't use the wall where the window is at all). I think the kitchen would work best in a L shape (provided I can move the sink to a different wall) but that would leave the fridge (combined with a freezer) to be directly in a corner so i'm unsure if if would be practical when opening the fridge/freezer door. I'm right hand and the wall will be on my right; should the doors open to the right (against the wall) or to the left (which would create a narrow space between the opened door and the wall but would allow the door to open to it's max. capacity)? thanks!
Maky any kitches surface glossy and you'll hate yourself for the rest if your life. Not talking about the fact that in many places, relfection from a window in the backsplash will be so annoying! Worst advice ever IMHO.
thank you! I'm going to be renovating my small/medium kitchen in the spring and I'm working through ideas. I really love the one shown a few times in the video with the dark yellow cabinets below and cream above. Do you have any links to that kitchen so I could see it more closely?

Mirror-like backsplash to reflect the window: $1000. Annoying constant glare in front of you when you need to work in the kitchen: Priceless. Glossy finish cabinets: +$500. Ugly fingerprints everywhere: Priceless. Why am I even getting offered vids with so many bad advices?!
I enjoy your videos, even when the topic is not relevant to me. Your voice and speaking style are pleasant. Alas, I must quit bc of the incessant clicking noises added w each transition. Apparently this is a vogue tic on UA-cam now, but it is the aural equivalent of strobe lights (think auditory clutter), making your otherwise excellent videos unlistenable. I hope this trend becomes outdated as quickly as open shelving.
i concur the tickling is a bit annoying; not enough to leave the channel though (that said, i've discovered it about 2 weeks ago and i'm not watching all the videos...)

There is a “settings” gear symbol in the upper right hand corner. Go to “playback speed” and select .75 or even .5 to slow it down. You can also double tap on the left side of the screen while it’s playing to rewind the video 20 seconds to hear something again. I sometimes also take screenshots and then pause the video and zoom in on them if I really want to inspect and think about something.

If a stepstool is too cumbersome to use often - there are pull-down solutions for too high cupboards too.
Limiting factor is always budget 😇
