Hello Jovita. I already know it's the real you, as your account is known to everyone here on UA-cam already. I already wished all luck and safety to you and your family somewhere else, so today, I want to tell you about something that might interest you.
I'm german, and the story of your father has never been forgotten here. He's a hero of the nation. I don't know if you've heard about this, but here, every single child learns about the horros of WW2 early on, and we learn about this stuff during multiple sessions in history classes, divided over multiple school years. We don't want this to happen again, so of course, we're schooled to live with respect for others and to always remember what this kind of bad behavior can ultimately lead to.
However, as all of this is taught to kids of varying age, we'd have a very grim childhood if we wouldn't learn about humanity, heroes and hope as well. This story is one of the most important ones we get told, there are even tests to be written about the heroism of your father and his friend, mr. Brown. This story is one of the most impactful things kids learn about here when talking about war. It's right next to the christmas truce in WW1. It's a lesson about peace and hope, which we can cling to even in the darkest of times, and thus, you can be assured that this story will live on in the heart and mind of germans for a long, long time to come. There's even a little thing, called "pulling a stigler" if you translate it here, which basically means helping someone who needs it the most, even tho you don't even know the person.
Early merry christmas to you and your family.

During a reunion of the Bomber group, Stigler was present. He recalled feeling like he shouldn't be there because he couldn't relate to anyone there being that he fought for the other side. Upon expressing this to Charlie, he was "Shot Down" so to speak when Charlie told him that the majority of the people in the room were the offspring and families of all the people he saved that day. Truly a heartwarming story from such a horrible time in History. The past was the worst.

Franz Stigler's commander had told them ,that if they ever shot at someone in a parachute, he would kill them himself. Franz felt that the B-17 being so badly damaged and unable to fight back, would have been akin to shooting a parachute.
Yarnhub does a great job with the animation. Another of their animated story videos is for the song 'Night Witches'. And of course you have to watch the music video for Christmas Truce.
Not all their songs are WW I or WW II, En Livstid I Krig (A Lifetime of War) is about the 30 Years War in the 17th century. The live version is great.

This is one of my favorite historic stories, and I always get chills when I listen to this song/music video. Franz was such a great man. If I recall correctly, his commander had told him to never down a parachute. To Franz, the damaged B-17 and the crew inside was equivalent to a solider descending with a parachute, hence he refused to fire them down.

I'm biased towards Smoking Snakes, since I'm Brazillian and this song tells the story of 3 soldiers of the Força Expedicionária Brasileira who stood and fought against a whole german battalion in Montese. The 3 of them stood and fought until the end, and were buried by the nazis, placing them in tombs with three crosses that had the phrase “Three Brazilian Heroes” written in German.

As a British Sabaton fan and I have been for years, all Sabaton songs are true stories from factual events in history. Weather it's from Viking times to the Falklands war or true stories about individual people who done acts of heroism to individuals whose acts of heroism have been forgotten but Sabaton has found out about and brought to life there stories. Sabaton are the greatest band on the planet who are not only incredible musicians, writers, singers and performers but are the greatest history teachers on the planet. As a supporter of our Armed Forces in the UK and it's veterans, also having a passion for military history since a young age and who had relatives who served in our countries Armed Forces, Sabaton are to me a big part of my life who bring history back to life. Especially military history, LEST WE FORGET. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

If you want more songs that will warm your heart… well the album Heroes by Sabaton is full of em.
But personally a few good songs of similar heroic acts like this with a twist coming in WW2 are:
The Last Battle - A SS Officer and his contingent, a German Officer and a bunch of guys loyal to him, a young gun ho American Tank Commander and French Politicians held prisoner in a German Castle, all working together to fight off a bunch of SS soldiers.
Yes it sounds absolutely bonkers and somewhat is… but sometimes history is that.
Hearts of Iron - Commander of the 12th German Army at the end of the war refuses Hitlers order to relive Berlin and instead sells the lives of his men to help trapped members of the 9th Army and German Civilians of Berlin and surrounding area escape from the advancing Red Army and instead into American/Western captivity. A strange tale where in many ways the German army can be saw as hero’s in saving its people from the fate of “retribution” being wrought by the Soviets.
En Livstid I Krig (2018 live concert (Swedish for A Lifetime of War - make sure to have captions/subtitles on when listening)) - a song about the life of a Swedish soldier serving in one of humanity’s most brutal wars. The 30 years war.
    Recommendations outside this:
Everything in the Carlous Rex Album. Best opinion is to listen to both the Swedish and English version so you can hear both versions of the song. Plus while each song shares the same name and theme and tune… the lyrics do switch up between the two languages with the English being a broader overview and the Swedish a more personal view.
    Great War - about WW1
Red Baron - about the Red Baron
Solider of Three Armies - about one of humanity’s most badass men.
Stormtroopers - about the German WW1 unit that would go onto revolutionise lightning warfare (or as the Germans called it Blitzkrieg) and inspire a certain group of Sci-fi soldiers in a Galaxy Far Far Away.
40:1 - a song about the Polish resistance at the beginning of WW2 and a song that re inspired a nations pride in itself massively (to the point of Sabaton didn’t play this in Poland they probably wouldn’t leave alive)
Wing Hussars - probably one of the biggest meme songs for Sabaton (not as it’s a bad song you’ll notice why I call it that when you listen) but it covers one of the great cavalry charges of history lead by the fearsome and elite Polish Winged Hussars - in many ways one of the most prestigious and elite cavalry units in all of Europe for centuries - and a cavalry charge that would likely be the inspirations for two of cinemas biggest cavalry charges in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Coat of Arms - a song of Greek heroics and Italian humiliations (set in WW2)
Lady of the Dark - one of history’s most forgotten hero’s and a very true representation of a classic Disney story (I.e. think similar to Mulan but it actually happened).
Hellfighters - a black unit of American volunteers who when the US refused then to fight alongside their troops were adopted by the French and would earn themselves one of the most prestigious places in military history.
A Ghost in the Trenches - when you send a Native American into the Trenches of WW1 you get one of the worlds great snipers and scouts.
Price of a Mile - the cost of war. Just remember that this entire song is about a battles that’s achievements were 6 miles of territory.
Rorke’s Drift - British Courage meets Zulu Courage.
Ghost Division - one of the great tank commanders leading one of histories great advances at speed.
Fields of Verdun - history’s longest battle and one of its most bloodiest too.
    Smoking Snakes - Brazilian Heroics
Resist and Bite - Belgian Heroics
The Valley of Death - Bulgarian Heroics
Last Dying Breath - Serbian Heroics
Swedish Pegans - because it’ll annoy a certain lead singer.

Oh and if I can make another suggestion, Sabaton has a second channel called Sabaton History.
It covers the actual history behind each of their songs and even a bit about the band and why the chose said song or even a bit of the history of the band and it’s musicians.
It would be awesome to see you react to these be it either in a separate video after listening to the song or in the same as a double packed punch of fun - getting to listen to the band and immediately it’s history.

    Greetings from 🇩🇪!
My grandfather told a similar heroic story. At the end of WW2 he (just 17) was stationed on the Western Front. Hardly any men were there, almost only boys like him or younger...
One of the paramedics in his group was a bit older, maybe 22!?
After a skirmish, he found a wounded Allied soldier. The paramedic treated the man, put on a uniform worn by his "enemies" and dragged the injured man across the front line until he met other soldiers. He dropped the guy off there, rested for a bit, and marched back...
My grandfather never mentioned names because it bothered him too much. I also don't know if this story can be proven in any way. Unfortunately I can't ask him anymore today. All I know is that this relatively short time in the war hurt him a lot.

As I've always said, in war there is no good and evil, because it's war itself that's evil, because it means tragedy, families that lose loved ones, homes destroyed, and hatred, fear, sadness born and renewed. So anyone who shows mercy and honor in war while it's not the most logical move, you can argue it's the right move to prove that even enemies can recognize that human life is worth protecting. Sabaton tells us stories as they are, and makes us feel pride in nations and people we aren't a part of. I honestly feel like Sabaton is a group with a heart of gold, nobody teaches history quite as good as Sabaton with how they handle their songs and things around it.

Sabaton is the best metal band that is currently active in my opinion. As a Belgian, my opinion is obviously biased. But I personally believe that Race To The Sea is the best of their songs. But these songs only get better the more you know about the history behind them, so let me tell you a short history of this song's story!
The Race To The Sea was an event in WW1, where both sides tried to outflank each other after the German advance failed. The theory was that the first side to reach the sea could outflank their opponent and would win the advantage in the war. Belgium threw this German plan into foil by flooding the River (The IJzer/Yser). The King of the Belgians was on that day, on the battlefield. Fighting alongside his soldiers. He was the only ruler to actively fight in the World War.
Btw: Every Sabaton song is based on a true story! This is though, with exception for the Songs of the Metalizer Album and the Fist of Flight album. Which you probably wont be recommended because it's not what Sabaton is known for. Sabaton is famous for singing exclusively about real history nowadays.

You should definitely look up photos of the B-17. You'd wonder how it kept flying. They don't call them flying fortresses for nothing-
In an interview, when Franz was lining up the shot, he saw the tail gunner bleeding profusely and couldn't do it.
Franz tried to get them to land in Germany and surrender, but Charlie refused. He then tried to get them to head towards neutral airspace, but Charlie refused again. So Franz escorted them to safety. He flew close enough to them so they wouldn't be hit by ground weapons. What a guy!
After the war, he moved to Canada. When this story was made public in the 80s, Franz was called a traitor by his fellow Germans and a nazi by his fellow Canadians. Upon visiting a WWII party hosted by Charlie, he felt out of place. However Charlie told him "All of these people are here and alive because of you." Because Franz spared them, those men went on to have families and be happy.

When this story came out. Stigler would receive letters from Germany. Calling him a traitor and worse. Then would receive letters from his Canadian neighbors. Calling him a nazi thug and worse.

Stigler mentions that his commanding officer told him "if i see you shoot a paratrooper in the air I will kill you myself" and that when he saw the plane he had the same feeling of a helpless enemy and it would have been wrong.

One detail that is mildly touched on, but not explained, is about Stigler's Knights Cross.
Pilots in the Luftwaffe had a victory tally system, where taking down a fighter was worth one tally, and taking down a bomber was worth three.
When Stigler came across Ye Olde Pub, he was at 27 tallies, yet he chose to save the bomber instead of shooting it down, which would have earned him his Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
This detail makes this story so much more heartwarming, and shows that not all Germans were heartless, just doing orders as they were told, otherwise they would be killed.

Stigler (the pilot who spared the bomber and her crew) had a commanding officer in Africa called Gustav Rodel, a phenomenal Luftwaffe pilot and ace himself, who is perhaps more famous for his quote:
"You are fighter pilots first, last, always. If I ever hear of any of you shooting at someone in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself."
Stigler remembered this during this flight and decided that shooting the aircraft was tantamount to shooting pilots under a parachute. They were both products of the early war mentality between the RAF and Luftwaffe of a chivalric sense of honour and code, recognising that it behoved both sides to take a practicable approach to this. This had stemmed largely from the First World War.
Adolf Galland was another of this idea, who was asked by Goring what his thoughts were on shooting enemy pilots under canopy and Galland replied thus:
"I should regard it as murder [Herr Reichsmarschall]. I would do everything in my power to disobey such an order."
Allegedly, Goring replied "Just as I expected from you."
Unfortunately, such sentiments between the sides waxed and waned and such attacks on pilots did happen.

And german AA men could easily tell it is one of their one, possibly flying next to B-17 and force it to land.
But if they could see that he was assisting them out and recognice the plane, then he could have been shot by his own people that´s my opinion of risking his life two times that day.

This was the very first combat flight Charlie Brown's crew flew. If Franz had shot them down he would have had enough kills to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, Germany's highest honor ( Thus the lyrics, "Said goodbye to the cross he deserved" ). Those couple of facts just add so much more drama to the song.

Attack of the Dead Men - True Story
Lady of the Dark - True Story
    Bismarck - True
Primo Victoria - no specific story but still True. The D Day invasion of Normandy.
    The Last Stand - True

And still Franz must have much to hate bombers from allied side as: During last week of July 1943, bombs killed an estimated 37k civilians and wounded 180k in Hamburg, and almost destroyed most of the city. Still after seeing what allied bombers can do he chose to save this patricular one.

"he risked his life two-times that day" is because the german antlantik-wall was layerd into two, on the coast and inland, about 2-5 km apart, massive anti-air nests pretty much everywhere on the course that b17 took, but the only reason they didn't open fire was because there was a BF-109 flying next to it, the spotters on the ground were probably thinking about some scenario where you draw your prey out and and out and out and then stick the knife in, but not that time.
    great story.

    • @leechowning2712
      @leechowning2712 Рік тому

Actually the other reason they didn't is because it was fairly common for them to capture a seriously damaged allied bomber like this and then a BF 109 or similar would escort the plane as it was being transferred to disassembly. So when they saw a very obviously badly damaged allied bomber and then a fighter escort they presumed it was one of those. The reason it would still be very dangerous for him is that it wouldn't be hard for the German special police to verify that no bomber had been captured that day when it was known that he had gone up to intercept one. In these later stages of the war, when the conflict was as desperate as it was, letting an enemy bomber survive would have been extremely negatively viewed, at least by those police, and they were not known for being gentle to people that they believe were traitors

Franz Stigler would have won a valuable medal for killing Charlie and the crew. He was one bomber kill away from earning the Knight's Cross, one of the highest German military awards at the time. He instead chose mercy in a war with so little of it. His action let dozens of people come into this world who otherwise would have never been.

Couple bits of info that I haven’t seen yet. When he says something about “the cross he deserved”, it was because if Stigler shot down the Pub, he would’ve gained the Iron Cross. The Cross is a symbol saying that the German pilot shot down a certain amount of enemy planes. One thing to note about the B-17 is that there’s a good reason they’re called the “Flying Fortress”. Many B-17 planes suffered immense damage that would drop other planes. Looking at photos of ones that flew and got so damaged is insane

Sabaton has stated before that there are so many wild and amazing stories in history (especially wartime) that they would rather tell those over making up their own. It's why all their stories are so WIWI & WWII songs, since it's so fresh in history compared to say, the Winged Hassars or the Great Crusades

Late response. Joakim Broden explained Sabaton's focus on history as it makes songwriting easier. You don't have to make up the story, just have to make it fit a melody. They do prefer to cover the not well-known stories of history as they may inspire their audience and fans. The general focus on war is to memorialize the sacrifices made rather than to glorify it
