Saw The Duke in 1972 with the entire band. After the first set, we noticed Duke still at the piano. We went up to meet him and my buddy asked him if he could include "Perdido" in the second set. Without hesitation, Duke began playing the request. After a few notes Lamb and Jones were in step with him! Moments later I was surprised by Paul Gonsalves, who had crossed the bandstand to join in - our own private reception!!! An evening remember!
Duke was a subtle, humble, stylish, impeccably tasteful pianist who really knew how to shine in a small group setting while highlighting the talented musicians who played with him. Money Jungle w/Roach and Mingus is fantastic. Wish he'd made a dozen more records like this.
I saw Duke Ellington when he was playing at Disneyland and I was just in high school. He was one of the nicest and friendliest people I've ever met. Rufus Jones was playing drums and he was awesome.
If the drum solo is insane, then I´m insane too, because I love it. Great, great bass. Duke shows he was an amazing piano player. THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!!
I was fortunate enough to see Duke and his men in Glasgow, Scotland during this ‘67 tour of Europe. Rufus was the master of placing technique and musicality in perfect balance. They can rave about Buddy R, and justifiably so, but Rufus is in the same class. Thank you, Duke!
In the realm of music there were many kings, but there was only one Duke. Duke always knew to find music, and she found him. However small or big the ensemble, she was always there, his beloved mistress, and our home, sanctuary and world.
When I was in the Air Force Band in 1960 to 1965 everyone was telling me about John Lamb whom had just gotten out of the Air Force Band. Rufus Jones, the drummer is fantastic.
Thank you very much for posting this great video on UA-cam! Just a suggestion : I think your video could be much more heard and seen if you would put more elements in the tags such as the title of this piece, the album from which it comes from, and the names of all the musicians.
@alisanchazz Check out his handiwork on Ellington's Far East Suite, especially the opening number, "Tourist Point of View". This very rhythm section drives the hell out of the orchestra.
People nowadays forget one of the key things about all types of music. Less is more. I think Duke did more with fewer notes than anybody else would, especially compared to guys nowadays who are always trying to over complicate things. Keep it in a context and make the notes matter. Its not just a key or just a fret.
Segun dice al final del video se llama "on the fringe of the jungle". Igual está escrito a la derecha del video, donde está la info del usuario. Respecto del baterista no logro encontrar uno con ese nombre. Tendré que seguir buscando.
Jo Jones, Philly Jo, Elvin, Harold, and here "Speedy" Rufus Jones (also with Maynard's band). Both of these guys fit with Duke than Mingus and Roach ("Money Jungle") or Elvin and Garrison (the Coltrane-Duke session). Look for a youtube vid erroneously labeled 1940 for Duke the florid piano player. Later he could sound Monkish in both touch and use of time. This guy carries on in the Blanton tradition--as did Aaron Bell and Joe Benjamin.
The, beg. /middle of this is reminisent of The Shepard w. lamb / woodyard ,similar jam ,chord 's but Time's a bit different AND room for musical RUFUS who still blows away Blast beat and non drummers, Get some Help,..

Rufus Jones has got to be one of the most incredible drummers I've ever seen.

What a solo by Rufus Jones!
Ellington Excellent, forever fresh..
Beautiful piece I've never heard before. Different but unmistakably Duke.
Beautiful in every aspect: Pace, style, ideas, rhythm, creation.
Awesome Rufus Jones !!!
Long Life for de Duke!!!

Wow I was almost mad searching desperately for some Ellington solo or in little combo, thank you very much!!
This is Music!
Excelente contrabajista John Lamb!
Could've sworn I heard the camera guy saying "Are we up to speed?!?" when Rufus was playing his solo.. WOW!
very, very good!!!
clever duke, love it............
yes rufus!
Sometimes with Duke's composition and allowances for young cats improvisation - you get a sense of what Jazz and what it will become.
Wake up ...with the rhythm in the blood..!!
I'm not usually that crazy about drum solos but this one kept my interest.
i agree! he's so cool.
that is a great record!!
He was not the Duke, he was the king.
Excelente,
¡Me encanta! Gracias por compartir.
Increíble!!! A 200 años por delante!!!!!!!
A king is just a human. Duke is not just a human :)
Grandioso Duke.
holy cow! wow!
Esto es lo que se llama una obra maestra.
IN OTHER WORDS...THIS IS A REAL MASTERPIECE.

Merveilleux ! Merci !
@07123me they'd laugh at you. There are few people in the world, that admires that kind of art. I'd give you standing ovation ;)
Remember: Jimmy Blanton was with Duke when they came close to creating the idea of the Bass Solo
67-Duke Ellington trio
The KING of JAZZ
|m| O.o
Damn!!...me quede sin palabras
i have this on dvd, plus with horns!!
I LOVE Duke´s minimalistic sound. All us piano players often tend to play WAY to many notes. Not the Duke though.
This is life!:-)
Duke el mas grande músico de USA
El mas grande músico popular del mundo

Wow!!
Why tf do we even have a dislike button for this ?

borzalom
american thinking dramatically taste evil prisoner.
Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.
Obviously Duke is not cool with the bass player.
Obviously the drum part is child's play. It totally shows that the guy has no talent. (sarcasm)
