I listen to this track about 20 times a month or so. I love this moment in time. I wish I could have experienced it in person. What a performance and what a group of wonderful talent. I can't get enough. In heaven I would love to meet all of these guys.
Man, this is one of the greatest examples of circular breathing demonstrated so beautifully by Harry Carney. That was true artistry. I play this song as a set closer, not nearly as well as the Duke and his men, but I keep trying. For KG!!!

Here I am again, listening to this wonderful piece as I tell others about it. This is such an artistic video of them playing that I wish I could frame it and hang it on my wall
I've listened to Duke since about 5 years ago, and the amount of people from my generation discovering Duke due to Big Mouth makes me happy to be a musician, and a huge fan of him. To you Duke, The one that got me into Jazz.
no doubt, and it was the Duke's genius who even thought about voicing the baritone right out front of the horn section...i mean, who does that? but wow could harry coaxe some sweetness outa that bari
Without a doubt, the finest baritone sax solo ever recorded. I wish I could have witnessed the initial reaction of Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber & Steve Kupka after they heard this for the first time! It's a shame that the bari sax is such an underappreciated instrument for so long---When I bring mine on stage, people still ask me what the hell it is!
This was a revelation. And I’ve heard a ton of Ellington. What tone Carney had! Duke cared about two things. Swing and tone. You needed both to play in his band. Such elegant and timeless music. The Soul wrenching lyrics are always in mind as he okays.
Me too! :D I just finished the book yesterday , and now i'm taking time to listen all the quoted musicians.Years ago i also heard about Duke Ellington in the intro of the movie The science of sleep by Michel Gondry, but this is actually the first time i'm listening his stuff.
Possibly the best bari sax solo ever played. If you close your eyes, he sometimes sounds like an alto and then sometimes sounds like a tenor. From subtone to throat growl, with impeccable taste, he even throws in circular breathing at the end! WOW!
Another one of Duke's great songs, Sophisticated Lady. Harry Carney compliments this haunting melody with one of the most "beautifully expressive" instrumental solos I have heard. Dan Damon (career musician)
That was Johnny Hodges. Duke's 1st Alto and soloist for around 30-40 years and one of many great sax players to ever live. But yea, I guess he should've payed attention 😒
Duke ellington es la cuna de mi Nostalgia, sus composiciones me llegan al alma y me hacen recordar cosas que nunca viví en el pasado, me pone realmente melancólico
>>This sax "solo" is simply incredible. Harry is so smooth and phrases so sweetly that on at least 2 occasions I let out a noticeable sigh. The agility he has on this Bari is uncharacteristic of the instrument itself., he really shows us how it is done here. That 24bar long whole note shows that circular breathing isn't for digeridoo players only. So you see that this vid was so impressive that I took the time to comment on it. WOW !!! What virtuosity and control.
@@geraldjohnson4013... You put it as it should be put. One of my favourites is actually Canadian, LOL... genius Oscar Peterson but this drummer is American... and he is a genius... Dave Weckl.
I'm looking at some videos as I'm about to read the latest Duke biography. The sound of live instruments and a big band is so good. Musicians seemed to be real masters of their instruments until the arrival of Rock and Roll. There are some good rock players, but being a skilled musician was the norm up until the rock era. You didn't have to just know how to play three chords. You had to know your instrument inside out.

And the circularly breathed note sounds like a viola 🤯
he makes the baritone a legitimate solo instrument. something I don't think it was even designed for.
And often it sounds like a cello. I knew Harry Carney well; the kindest man that ever walked the earth. This shones through in his playing.
