I just fixed my 2006 Duramax differential leak. New cover, 10.5 bolts and gasket. No leaks. Mine had fluid but was getting worse by the day. Took 7 hours. 14 bolts, bottom 5 had to get creative to grip the corroded heads. Looks good now and sealed.
@offbeatwarble I assumed it had a little bit of a whine to it, but that's pretty loud. He should have just paid Jon to fix it while he had it all apart.
I wonder what kinda glue they use to hold the magnet to the cover? I'd never really thought about it till you mentioned it. That would cause a whole lotta damage if it came lose and diffs take a pounding
I think that's the first time I've seen it glued in place , usually the strength of the magnet is good enough or I've even seen like a physical cage that prevents a magnet from moving
Penetrating oil is also a necessary tool. I don't know why it doesn't work for you. Try PB Blaster. I have seen other mechanics use it. You do need to give it a little time for the chemical reaction to breakdown the rust. According to project farm, liquid wrench is the best. However when the rust is so bad, then the mechanic will have to use a welding torch, and / or drill.
Friend was recently heating and pounding a shaft in a farm wagon. I suggested he try pbblaster. Whole can didn't work. Because he used the lubricant instead of penetrant. Lol. He then used 50/50 acetone/transmission fluid. Came right out next day .
Jonathan, I know u have video proof that you laid out all the scenarios with the customer, but you should always get it in writing by text or email. Because verbal agreements are just hot air.
Happy 4th Sir! You're in Valpo I'm south Chicago, I need front pads and maybe rotors ( not scraping hard at all ) 2012 Scion xB. I need the contact info. Thank you!

It's definitely cheaper to fix the leak before it becomes a real problem 👍
Wow you're right. I've never seen a magnet that full before.
I was surprised at how solid it was, this diff has been eating itself for a while.
The grease and metal off the magnet would probably make some good anti-seize in a pinch :) .
😁👍
That diff sounds awful 😆
Sounds like it has one hell of a supercharger 😂

The owner was hoping the noise would go away if the leaks were fixed and it was filled with fluid.... not so lucky this time!

Why not use a couple headless bolts to align it?

When doing stuff like this , that probably is the best form of action 👍

The guy got 300,000 miles out of the truck so he can't argue. He got his moneys worth so time for a new truck.
I skipped through. Did I miss talk of the crush washer issue?
