  • Hello!!
    Soooo if you watched my video on wine storage and serving temperature, you saw that my wine fridge died. RIP. So I did research on wine fridges and coolers and basically became a wine fridge expert. Here are some tips on what to look for in your next wine fridge: Compressor vs Thermoelectric, Single vs Dual Zone, Bottle capacity and more. If you're looking for an inexpensive wine cooler, check out Ivation on Amazon. Links below:
    Ivation 18 Bottle Thermoelectric $199.9
    amzn.to/3wRJwxM
    Ivation 28 Bottle Compressor $289.99
    amzn.to/3cdQC83
    I ended up buying the Wine Enthusiast VinoView 36 Bottle Compressor through Costco. Stay tuned for my unboxing and review.

    Loved this review. Good to note the one you bought is not for BUILT-IN purposes. I am looking for a built-in for a wine bar and I went with the N'FINITY SD Dual Zone Wine Cellar (Stainless Steel Door) from Wine Enthusiast. This model/brand was more than I had originally planned to spend on a wine cooler, but after looking through brands this seems on par with what quality built-ins are going for.

    This is very informative. Thank you. Unfortunately if you age wines at all, even just a couple of bottles, the common wine fridge is a threat and I am looking for some advice short of building a wine cellar that I won't be building. If you like older pinots or cabs and don't want to buy wines already aged at that premium then storing yourself is a necessity. I'm a big fan of burgundies, for example, and even most of the cheaper bottles of Cote d'Or pinots benefit from laying them down for 5-10 years. I have a 34 bottle Frigidaire wine cooler which I've recently placed a sensor in and have tracked its performance on temp and humidity. In order to maintain a 55 deg F internal temp I have to keep the thing set at 49. Not a problem. As for humidity, this is where one major problem kicks in. When the compressor kicks in it sucks the humidity out. Wine should be kept at 50-70% humidity. The unit averages only 40% but cycles constantly between 20% and 60%. I've added a pan with a sponge and a giant bovada humidity block but neither made a difference. The compressor just sucks out all moisture when it runs and it runs frequently (like for 1-2 hours every 4-5 hours). If you or anyone can recommend a cheaper unit or economical method for maintaining humidity that would be superb.

    Im preparing my home for sale and want to replace the wetbar dink area with a wine cooler.
    The part I don't understand is which ones can go in a cabinet (built-in or freestanding). If the ventilation is at the bottom on the front, would it matter which one?

    I jut got a nutrichef wine cooler, like 18 bottle cap. came in yesterday, letting it settle for 24hr before I plug it in.
    watching your vid, I probably would have gotten the wine enthusiast from Costco. mainly for the guarantee part.
    all the reviews on the various brands etc were all sort of iffy. mine included.
    do I feel lucky. well do ya? - punk? as Clint said thru gritted teeth.
    hopefully I'm luckier.

      Would like to know as well how it's holding up a year later! I was not picky on dual-zone vs not. I am not an *avid* wine drinker but I like to have at least 8-10 bottles on hand. I bought one that holds "26 bottles".

      @@TheSommNextDoor So sorry to hear. What are you going with next? I was eyeing this 51 bottle samsung dual zone from Costco, it was on sale for $1149 but today the price just went up to $1299 :(. I just want something reliable and good capacity. So weird why wine coolers can't consistently last more than a year or two in the kind of entry level price range

    Thermoelectric coolers use a "TEC" or a "peltier" cooler. This is a ceramic element that has a hot side and a cold side. When you apply power to it, one side heats up, and one side gets cool. However these devices work by only being capable of produce a maximum temperature difference from the ambient conditions.
    This is because the hot side and cold side are connected to each other. The colder you want one side to become, the hotter you have to make the other side. If you make it too hot, because they are connected, the heat just conducts to the other side and you end up with no difference in temperature.
    Now the "exterior temperature" comes in to play because you need a way to get rid of the hot side's heat. The larger the temperature difference in 2 things, the more heat you can transfer out. So what you're seeing is that if the room is lets say 80 degrees, then the hot side + heat sink + fan can only exhaust so much heat with that temperature difference. Lets say it can only get rid of enough heat for a 30 degree difference. This means that using the 80 degree air, fan, and heat sink, it can only get it down to 50 degrees on the cold side before the rest of the heat is too much and just conducts over to the cold side from the hot side.
    as far as "eco friendly" is concerned, these devices have no refrigerant, no coolant, or anything "ozone destroying" in them. Just a fancy ceramic element. As far as efficiency is concerned they are absolutely terrible and consume far more energy than they use for cooling. They are quiet because the ceramic element is a solid state device. So they just stick a heat sink and small fan on it, and thats all it does. No large compressor to rattle or turn on.

    • @lcglazer
      @lcglazer Рік тому

      So if the temp is hotter than 80F, then the ceramic can no longer keep the inside colder than 50? I live in a place that is waay too hot in the summer so I guess thermoelectric is out of the question.
      Btw most websites say thermoelectrics are supposed to save electricity. That not true?

    • @lcglazer
      @lcglazer Рік тому

      Honestly tho, most cities’ summers go above 80F. Where do you all put your coolers?? And no we don’t have a basement here in LA!

    • @t_c5266
      @t_c5266 Рік тому

      @@lcglazer TECs absolutely do not save energy. They are terribly inefficient. They might be good for really small applications where you don't need much "cold" and that's where the electricity saving comes from.
      And that's right. If your tec can cool a 30 degree difference, than if it goes up to 90 degrees it will only cool down to 60 degrees. Also those numbers were examples. The TECs might cool more or less. Youd have to check out the module on Amazon to see what is specified.

    • @t_c5266
      @t_c5266 Рік тому

      @@lcglazer I think they assume air conditioning. But it's expensive as hell to keep the house below 80 on a hot day.
      Compressor units don't suffer this drawback at all because they're miniature refrigerators. So they can basically freeze your wine if needed.
      Best advice, keep it on the cool side of the house that the sun doesn't hit?
