Andy keep making music till you drop! You are a rare breed that can make music where anything you touch is magic. While alive, produce as make much possible, not just for us for yourself as it makes you the happiest!
By saying "pound" are you referring to Brits? If so, the green and pleasant land has produced many geniuses. Andy Partridge is unique amongst those geniuses, but so are many of the others too. Each add their own flourish to the masterpiece that is made in the U.K.
could this genius possibly be more loveable or generous to his fans? he is the greatest artist the world never knew.... he could have had a career as a poet, an author, an artist, illustrator, painter, comedian or a musician.... the epitome of a renaissance man. my musical champion. long live andy p.
he doesnt understand his accomplishment(s)... he is a true perfectionist ... but he is THE musician's musician.... a living treasure... the most under rated musical genius of all time. make him famous... young musicians need to know of his work
XTC is a group that needs to be re-introduced to a world who missed them because of Andy's stage fright issues and then all the legal and personal squabbles. They were damn good and I am proud that I stumbled across them through a friend from Canada in 1980. Maybe Colin and Any can do a one-off reunion show with Dave and re-make history.
At the Solebury School (Eastern Pennsylvania), where the tuition is $59,750, I was just as much into the music of XTC as a Canadian named Paul Van der Vissor. (Amy Vissor, from the Netherlands, who is married to Brooklyn filmmaker Braden King).
I'm an avid rock fan from St. Louis, Mo......over here in America, a lot of music fans never got to know who XTC was. Yes, they were played a bit on college radio stations, but never hit the mainstream. .....I was always into the weirder and "off the cuff" type rock music......the day I picked up a copy of 'Skylarking' way back in my college days, I was hooked. I ended up buying all of their cd's.......I still think Andy Partridge is one of the greatest songwriters ever!!
And Andy, you're wrong, 'Easter Theatre' didn't/doesn't fall into the 'almost perfect' and 'almost as good as your musical heroes' music'.......it is simply a wonderful, beautiful song. as good as anything Mc Cartney, Davies or Wilson ever wrote. Be proud of that. Along with all of the XTC music. Inspiring.
Easter Theatre is in my top 3 XTC songs. I introduced AV Vol. 1 to my kids a few years ago, and my then-7-year-old started requesting that I play Easter Theatre anytime I asked what music they wanted to hear. 😊
Awesome interview. Love the candor, humor and insight. Too bad Andy can no longer get into their older catalog like we can, but I understand. Very grateful for these guys.
So bloody funny. I've been a big fan of XTC since the late 80s, but only cause I weren't sophisticated enough earlier. While Oranges & Lemons was my real fan moment, I'd loved XTC since hearing/watching whilst smoking Dear God, then got into Making Plans For Nigel, Senses Working Overtime, but of course I love The Beatles and Beach Boys, so how could I not dig XTC...quintessential English Band really.
Ciao Egidio - grazie per tuttto quello che hai fatto per XTC e anche per i fan come me. Seriously - your English is probably a million times better than my Italian so thanks for this piece and all others you're putting on UA-cam. I used to live in Turin and played XTC as much as I possibly could on Radio Flash 97.7 between 83 and 85 - with Alberto Campo and Renato Striglia - and also on Radio Torino Popolare. Although - at the time, I didn't really get Mummer or Big Express. Now I do (well, most of them anyway). Cheers.
Thank you so much for posting. This was brilliant. I was thrilled to hear that Andy, who has said in the past that he was a fan of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Ray Davies, also loved Bacharach and David. Also my faves. No wonder I love his songs so much.
after listening to this and several other interviews I've come to the conclusion that Andy is one of those people who are either funny or interesting 24/7. I clearly adore him and and music( mid to later albums) are just ( as they would say).. Brilliant!
I never cared for Go2 (which I actually bought blindly after seeing the original cover), but every other album I find full of wonderful, magical songs and masterpieces.
Agreed... although Battery Brides is gorgeous, the rest of it seems to be songs in need of hooks. "Are You Receiving Me?" is great too but that was just a single that they added to Go 2 after its initial release.
I would love to meet him. Im just some american who plays music, who's spirit is stuck in loving rock music. I started listening to XTC when the song, "Life Begins at the Hop" had been out for about 2 to 3 years and was extremely tired of the conventional style of music american's love to exploit to make a buck. I can't tell you what made me fall in love with it, maybe it was the guitar lead towards the end of the song. I know I'm insignificant, but Alan if you see him, pls tell Andy he is inspiration in all my music and though times have change and music, I will never forget XTC and their amazing work. God, its so good! Thanks
Nice one Egidio, ta. Hilarious story about Andy nicking Ringo's sticks! and the story about Sting's phone number (and Andy's brilliant Geordie and Irish accent impressions!) is almost too funny. and all topped off by the masterpiece that is the glorious Easter Theatre. Magic
Nice interview! I was very lucky to have seen XTC in Liverpool about 1980 they were absolutely magnificent, certainly one of the best bands of the era, Andy mate, Drums and Wires is one of the best albums of all time.. cmon..-your later stuff I can take or leave mate..but the stuff you did with Barry Andrews was sublime, Dukes of Stratosphear album also brilliant!! get back on stage!!!!
All from Drums and Wires to English Settlement are near masterpieces. My biggest disappointment was Skylarking at that time. I am now a bit more in peace with it, it has loads of good stuff but lost in an unsuitable production. From the later records to me My Apple Venus Pt1 is really great throughout. ok may be two weaker titles on it. Great songwriting, and a rich and lush sound experience. Part 2 is good but not as good to me. I understand Mr. Partridge does not like the older stuff thaaat much, but there are loads of good titles that many still love. Why not do some of your favourites from '77 - '82 and rewrite them more matured you think they should be, and without the pimples in the face? I would not mind at all hearing them in "Apple Venus lush production".
The thing about this "I don't want to be on stage because I don't like seeing old farts like me on stage" is pretty much true. That said, I'd be more than happy to not 'see' him spend some time in a studio and make a few more albums. Another thing about Andy is that his 'ego' was too small for the music industry. He would have had much greater success if he didn't believe he was like Keith Richards because he had a hell of a lot more talent than he believed. Ego seems to be the defining feature for a certain level of success in many facets of life.
AWESOME!!!!!I LOVE YOU ANDY & COLLIN AND DAVID!!!!TAKE ME TO SWINDON TO SING BIG DAY FOR YOU BOTH!!!!!!XTC,THE SMART'S BAND OF WHOLE WORLDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!LOVE U !!!!!!!
I found this, and listened and then thought none of my fave XTC songs would be played and then at 19:25 it all starts to take shape, and then I realise the song I have recited to the woman I love for all of these years to describe the places I love which are the places she showed me are all encapsulated within ..........Seagulls....seagulls....kiss her.....
Respect (able St). Hang on, had to go and see the Beach Boys! Surely they are old boys up on stage doing their thing not 21 year old firebrands. Hold the thought and feeling you had to see your heroes live, we would like the same opportunity Andy. ( no pressure like)
An artist doesn't belong to his fans at all, he/she just belongs to his/her own life, with all its shadows and light and dreams and nightmares. If he doesn't want to "come back" we all just have to leave him alone. He just want to relax, touring + music business life is killer for an over- sixty man and he just don't want to be killed. I don't say this, HE says this.
Brian Wilson was through a lot. The "Love and Mercy" film can only hint. He is mortal and seems a shy man with a hearing problem brought on by trauma. I wouldn't expect more than "I like ice cream, do you"?" He's outlived his brothers and parents and was rescued from an evil tyrant in Gene Landry. His music however stands up and will forever--just like yours will, Andy Partridge. What was anyone else doing when he wrote and recorded "Heroes and Villains" in 1966? He was spurned by Mike Love instead of being loved for breaking the mold that made them.
If you don't want to be a lead character or get on stage, create show with performers. Produce them. I would love to see Green Man and Summer's Cauldron in a brilliant media concept. I can't believe XTC made no money during the touring days--like Hendrix had his Jeffries, XTC had to have their somebody making off with the bucks. I saw XTC in NY in Feb 1981. Andy's entrance was a little delayed like Ray Davies and everyone there knew who the star was.
It's raining on the beach She inches close but out of reach The waves look painted on Seagulls screaming The sea is warship grey It whispers "Fool!" then slides away Black coastline slumbers on Seagulls screaming kiss her, kiss her And all the flags that flap on the pier Spell why on earth do you want The fog hides much but one thing is clear She's nearer Dead deck chairs under shrouds And life belts gape like minstrel mouths Her hair still smells of salt Seagulls screaming kiss her, kiss her Kiss her, kiss her, kiss her, kiss her He who hesitates is lost If you want her, you should tell her Take her by the hand If you hesitate If you wait, November wins her November will win her She returns to sand So get ahold of the girl I say I like your coat Her thank-you tugs my heart afloat I nearly didn't hear for Seagulls screaming kiss her, kiss her He who hesitates is lost

However i get the live thing... i also dont play live... perf anxiety... nasty shit an can ruin the whole musicking experience.... 3 years ago eh? God i was a gonshite... sorry Andy
Is it just me, or is that a different version of "Seagulls Screaming"? Remastered possibly? Or does the BBC just sound odd to an American from the Middle West, haha.
I would be the happiest person in the world if I had just the opportunity to shake Andy Partridge's hand and thank him for all his wonderful music..
+blackgargamel ditto :)
I got to,once, at Tower Records in 1989. Colin and Dave too. So grateful.
Marla Singer You are one fortunate person. Congrats.
Hard to believe Andy is 62, going on 63. I remember him when he was a young pup. Thanks.
Andy keep making music till you drop! You are a rare breed that can make music where anything you touch is magic. While alive, produce as make much possible, not just for us for yourself as it makes you the happiest!
Andy Partridge is a genius. Not many of those to the pound.
xxxchrist1 snipping,snipping,snipping goes the scissorman.....
+xxxchrist1 naturally, which is why soooo many don't get it. Sadly... :(
but theres a few who do. Gladly! :D
Colin Moulding too

Such a humble - and talented - man. He doesn't seem to realize that he's just as brilliant as his "heroes." Great interview. Thanks.
he doesnt understand his accomplishment(s)... he is a true perfectionist ... but he is THE musician's musician.... a living treasure... the most under rated musical genius of all time. make him famous... young musicians need to know of his work
lefkytheshin I don’t think he is humble but.... he is one of the greatest songwriters ever so he is justified in his “confidence” 😀
Not humble

If only the pagan com believe his biz. It's a legend in it's own mind. Some of us have watched this clown try to evolve.
Extremely unlikely that such a reunion will happen (sounds like Dave is just done), but I'd be there in a heartbeat if it did.
I'm an avid rock fan from St. Louis, Mo......over here in America, a lot of music fans never got to know who XTC was. Yes, indeed!!
I still love Drums and Wires and English Settlement. later stuff is great as well but those earlier albums shaped my teen years.
Glad he picked Seagulls, I think this is one of his finest songs and the lyrics are wonderful - so evocative. The bloke's a genius.
The songs of XTC are one of lasting joy and love for me and always will be
Thanks for posting. Such a joy to hear him chatting away.
It’s crazy to hear Andy talk about how he didn’t fancy being a front man meanwhile he was always so damn good at it!
And Andy, you're wrong, 'Easter Theatre' didn't/doesn't fall into the 'almost perfect' and 'almost as good as your musical heroes' music'.......it is simply a wonderful, beautiful song. as good as anything Mc Cartney, Davies or Wilson ever wrote.

fantastic, finally catching up with the very talented mr.partridge.
Awesome interview. Love the candor, humor and insight. Too bad Andy can no longer get into their older catalog like we can, but I understand. Very grateful for these guys.
Great to hear this interview, just reminded me how much I miss XTC.
I remember what a HUGE fan I was here in NYC when I started college!
14:01 a prophet is without honour in his own land. Thank you UK for giving us XTC to the U.S!
Good to hear Mr.Partridge is all well.
BIG Xtc Fan since "The big express".
Thank you for uploading tis interview.
Gtx from Tirol
just seen that Alan Thompson sadly passed away in 2017, great chat here with Andy, fly well in your studio in the sky.......
COME ON ANDY!!! We want more great music
Un genio! Grazie per questa chicca.
Thanks very much for sharing this interview!
I love Andy's impersonation of Sting at 32:45. Hilarious
oh man -- that sting story is hilarious. great to hear from andy after a long time. such a humble guy but man what a genius.
Sir John Johns is a national treasure. Never get tired of hearing him describe his take on the world through his eyes.
I was saying to a mate the other day "Andy Partridge where are you"? And then I found this. :-)
thank you for uploading this, enjoyed every minute of it.

EASTER THEATER OH MY GOD !!!! he keeps saying how proud he is of this song and honestly he is so right for that
Thank you Mr. Sabbadini for sharing this with us.
I've always thought Andy would make a good radio presenter, he always has a quirky outlook on life.
He definitely has the face for radio
Ciao Egidio - grazie per tuttto quello che hai fatto per XTC e anche per i fan come me. Andy bullying Colin to sing haha. I would bully him too, he has an amazing voice. Some great gems in this, thanks for uploading Egidio.
I could reply for days. Easter Theater is a masterpiece, so is AV1. If I wasn't so attached to Nonsuch, I would easily say AV1 was the best album.
Stingray
Agree about Easter Theater. Andy's modesty, although becoming, doesn't do the song justice.
I agree with Andy. "We're All Light" may be my all-time top XTC song.
Wonderful. Thanks Egidio
great interview, Andy has got such a good sense of humor, would love to see them tour once more
Thank you so much for posting. This was brilliant. I was thrilled to hear that Andy, who has said in the past that he was a fan of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Ray Davies, also loved Bacharach and David. Also my faves. No wonder I love his songs so much.
I can’t get anyone to listen to XTC , so I know it’s good!

hi andy. youve been a big influence in my non musical career. XTC my fgavourite band. cheers dudes

Top class. Thanks.
Easter Theatre!!!

Definitely, but I think he's probably happier now as a result
So nice to hear Andy chatting away. Damn, he can come write a song for me any day....only I aint got a cent.
When I add up all the xtc songs I like, there's nobody who is very close.
Still can't believe that Alan has passed away. Really liked his Sunday night shows on Radio Wales.
Well, I'm alone wanting to hearer more. I love XTC stuff.
AWESOME!!!!!I LOVE YOU ANDY & COLLIN AND DAVID!!!!TAKE ME TO SWINDON TO SING BIG DAY

Bravo Egidio!!
I believe that XTC can save the world ,they are that great! So get cracking. Please
I thought Andy was a great front man! he gave the whole band a unique sound and style. Brilliant!

The worst thing about being Andy Partridge is not knowing the sheer joy of listening to XTC recordings
very cool!

Cybernauts, Terranauts and Astronauts.

It's raining on the beach
She inches close but out of reach
The waves look painted on
Seagulls screaming
The sea is warship grey
It whispers "Fool!" then slides away
Black coastline slumbers on
Seagulls screaming kiss her, kiss her
And all the flags that flap on the pier
Spell why on earth do you want
The fog hides much but one thing is clear
She's nearer
Dead deck chairs under shrouds
And life belts gape like minstrel mouths
Her hair still smells of salt
Seagulls screaming kiss her, kiss her
Kiss her, kiss her, kiss her, kiss her
He who hesitates is lost
If you want her, you should tell her
Take her by the hand If you hesitate
If you wait, November wins her November will win her
She returns to sand So get ahold of the girl
I say I like your coat
Her thank-you tugs my heart afloat
I nearly didn't hear for
Seagulls screaming kiss her, kiss her
He who hesitates is lost

Andy presents "A Hard Day's Help Monkees"
Andy, we want to see you on stage, even if it is behind a semi-transparent curtain!
@@mobycat Or get one of those Sia wigs 😁.

A hard day's help - monkees! Haha!
Agreed
In speech, he sounds very much like John Cleese.

It's definitely not the album version.
I love the pants and boots section..
Who is that woman Alan Thompson has his arm around????Long Live XTC !!!
Andy's partner Erica Wexler :-)
I wish Andy would strike up the band and crank out new music..
He sounds so cornish its ridiculous
