    The week after Peel passed I had a gig at an Irish bar in Washington DC where I'm from. I stopped by the coffee shop near the pub before the gig. The guy at the coffee shop was from Cameroon. As he fixed my coffee he noticed my instrument case and said. "You're a musician? Of course you've heard about John Peel!" Of course, I had. It struck me as a testament to Peel's magic that an American guy playing Irish music and a Cameroonian immigrant to DC were bonded instantly by their mutual admiration for a UK disc jockey.

    I miss the fact that he always seemed to be broadcasting just to me, listening under the bedclothes with some headphones on hoping my parents wouldn't catch me, hearing records by people like The Fall, trying to scribble the names down by the light of the street light outside my window so I'd remember them in the morning. Probably the only person outside of friends and family that I've actually physically mourned when he went, he was a massive part of my childhood and teenage years and I still miss not hearing his voice on the radio to this day.

    • @grizcuz
      @grizcuz 9 років тому +18

      I have absolutely no idea just what you're blabbering on about? Why does reminiscing about John Peel imply I had no relationships with real people, hope or aspiration? He was a DJ I enjoyed listening to and was upset when he passed on, it doesn't mean that was the sum total of my interests, or the limits of my existence. Are you being serious or attempting to 'troll'?

    • @grizcuz
      @grizcuz 9 років тому +17

      Opinions are only valid if they are based on fact, you have no idea about my experiences in life apart from my appreciation of JP in my first post, yet you wibble on believing an appreciation of someone somehow means they are deficient in other areas of their life. Looking at your other posts, I find it ironic that you question someone's intelligence. 'Intellectual writing'? Don't make me fucking laugh! I've read writing with more intelligence on the back of a public toilet door! I'll put my academic qualifications up against yours any day of the week, I'd be surprised if you even finished school. Go and take some of your medication and learn how to use an apostrophe before you post any more nonsense, you're just a half witted troll with nothing better to do with their time.

"modern" music was extremely discouraged in me house and so i'd use my parents music centre late at night, put it into record and have to leave it and go to bed! i'd try and turn it over 45 minutes later if i could, or was still awake.. and the thrill of going through it the next day.. so much fun.. you just KNEW there would be plenty to discuss with friends.. 🙂

      The Brit’s had 2 hours a day when Peel was on.
      These days I follow a whole bunch of old punks on social media and there’s isn’t a single obscure track or band that anyone can throw up, that I didn’t hear on 2jj back in the day.

    How good it is to hear his voice again ... He was always there on the radio, droll and knowledgeable and funny, almost as far back as I started listening to music. By always being there he somehow became part of his listeners' lives, part of their family. That's why his passing affected so many people, and why he is still missed.
    John Peel was one of those people who don't want fame and celebrity, but he ended up famous and celebrated anyway. This program shows that he didn't succumb to it, and for that we probably have Sheila and his family to be grateful for. He was always just an ordinary bloke who loved music and enjoyed doing his job, but when work finished he just wanted to be at home, in Peel Acres.

He (and his producer John Walters) quickly sussed out that I was skint and made sure that I was admitted to the BBC canteen, invited me out for a curry and more than a few pints and ensured that I had enough money in my pocket for a ticket back home. Had the privilege of meeting him on a number of occasions at the BBC Paris Studios in Lower Regent Street back in the 1970's. We were regulars writing to the BBC Ticketing Unit every week to attend the Thursday evening recording sessions and slipping in the back fire doors and avoiding the old commissionaires in their uniforms when we never had a ticket! Great days when we saw so many household names today that were almost unknown at the time - Whispering Bob Harris was good when he took over but even he would admit he lacked the magic of John Peel.

    I First heard JP's voice introducing the first public performance of Pink Floyd's "Echoes", including OOTD and FOS, etc.(at Paris Cinema, London, Sept 1971. He left a permanent positive impression. Lovely guy-and in the days of pirate radio. And, BTW, the above 3 songs IMHO are THE best performances of such by the Floyd, bar none. Get in the zone and listen to it a few times. I'll bet you will agree. JP obviously enjoyed their set very, very much! It's great so much has been preserved from his days with radio.

      He did seem a great bloke, yes. His humour appealed to me as well. He was a trumpeter, wasn't he? He got fed up whizzing up and down the motorways of Britain, gigging... chucked it in, walked into the BBC: "Got a job for me?" And so it goes... lucky he was paired up with Peelie, without his steadying influence John Peel would most likely have never been so successful. John would certainly go along with that, indeed he probably did so, either in writing or in speech.
