Myabe its worse for him when he performs live, but I agree with alot on here, a very engaging, charismatic person...would blow the socks off alot of the presenters of today without relying on loudness but undoubted wit.
Andy had been on Valium since he was about a month shy of turning 13. He was taking lots of them at once, too. When he went cold turkey, he started getting muscle spasms and bouts of amnesia. He also wanted to stay away from the front door, because he was afraid someone would recognize him.
Andy went full Beatles circa...I'm sure benzos anxiety and withdrawal certainly came into play but I think less is more came into play. Sloshing around on planes buses and trams had to be enough. The Beats game plan is in his DNA...not quite a Syd Barrett...all studio no live performances! It ain't like XTC music was the Stax Volt revue! Hard to reproduce it innit?
Our lovely Andy where would be without him. And his wonderful music. I know he has his demons but dont we all. Thrilled to see this has truly made my day. What a nice young man
My niece was born in Swindon, 36 years ago. When they were living there my sister told me that every time XTC played there Andy's father would phone the radio station to make sure everyone knew about it.
I shall never tire of watching and listening to Andy, what a wordsmith! Hearing him mentioning all the places he didn't get to show us makes me hanker for a part two! I shall cross all extremities in anticipation.
Andy Partridge could present any place in the world and it would be most entertaining and interesting. What a talent for words. I really do hope that he will write down his memoirs one day. ..If he finds the time for it. ❤

If you've ever heard his accent under the helmet from out-takes or stock footage from before they dubbed James Earl Jones over him, then that's prime west country. Like a cliché portrayal of an English farmer, or a parody of one. The actor Stephen Merchant would be another good example.
To a Dane/foreigner this sounds like british with quite a bit of Irish or American mixed in!? Is this the way all Swindonians speak? Love it. Would like to move there to polish up my english 🙂

What did Swindon ever do to deserve the legend that is Andy Partridge? Can't imagine a better 'Swinedon' tour guide. When was this made, around 1981 or 82, judging by the quantity of hair... thanks for posting, more fascinating stuff.
If his music career hadn't worked out, he could have easily become a TV or Radio presenter. Although a version of history where Andy Partridge and XTC weren't successful doesn't bare thinking about.
What a marvellous tv presenter Andy Partridge would have made. He just exudes verbal and musical talent and judging by his songwriting collaboration on Mike Keneally's superb Wing Beat Fantastic album, Andy's muse, wit and taste is as sparkling as ever. Partridge, is not only the Prince of Orange, to quote one of his great songs, he's the prince of Swindon too...a national treasure. He should get at the very least a CBE.
I remember buying XTC records when I was 16 in 1980/81 I loved them. Sorry to hear about Andy and his tinnitus. Isn't it ironic he sang a song called senses working overtime!! We do not fully appreciate our senses until we lose them. I have lost my sense of smell and taste. Ironically i put a quote on my facebook page a year before i suffered from this condition " The law of dietics, if it tastes good its bad for you ".!! Andy, So long and thanks for all the fish!! The house in Westcott Place (near the Avery Scales shop) that stood on its own ended up on the cover of XTC’s ‘Ball and Chain’. This was my Swindon and I knew it like the back of my hand. The place has probably tripled in size since as they add new housing estates, but never anything cultural.
When it came to a generation trying to remember the various things that it had forgotten through its indulgence ( ironically) in ecstasy …XTC was name-checked repeatedly by various Britpop bands. Steam fist futurist, playing as Andy slides down the Brunel escalator, is key. That, or a number of songs from the ‘dub experiments’ album Could easily have made it onto the Blitz club playlist? I was in Macclesfield recently and the place had murals and images of Joy division / Ian Curtis all over the place. This band deserves a similar treatment in their home town. I’ll never forget standing outside an office block sized promotional poster of the band in New York …thinking ‘ Ha! Swindon ‘.

I remember watching this when it was first broadcast on BBC Brizzle (RPM? with the awful Andy Batten-Foster). When I was a young lad my parents used to drag me to Swindon a couple of times a month on shopping trips and we passed the Avery shop mentioned and I always thought the same as Mr. Partridge (though I do know my late Dad was actually in that shop once when the local Avery rep was selling him a new 'electronic' set of scales for his shop.
The world is so full of rich history. This is one place I have on my bucket list. No sarcasm, really a place with real history. I live in OC Southern California and nothing is new except the rebuilt ruins of a mission which exploited Native people and basically was destroyed in the last big earthquake. Loved Japan as it had real history and can't really been anywhere else that is old. One day I'll be there and not that I expect a grand church etc. but I will experience an average town, which is where I live and have always. Less is more. Get off the beaten path, I and many believe. Just don't cause a distraction or annoyance. Be respectful.

I come from an average town as well, but it would be great to see how different yet the same every hometown is. May happen one day for me if he agrees. Not an insane XTC fan. Just the music. Can't tell his age, birthday, married, kids, etc. No idea. Only like the music. Would be fun to experience it where it happened? Yeah. Why? I don't know. Why not? Won't make me a better writer at all. Sometimes it is really all about just going for it and have fun and see what happens. That is how most (99%) creativity occurs. Basically it would be fun to see what happened and where but has no effect whatsoever on your own music writing. I understand it is no Mecca. Good writing comes from inside and one's own experiences. However, way cool to see this average town that produced so much, with or without the clan.

I remember this clip well. It was part of a regional arts show from the BBC called RPM, presented by Andy Batten-Foster. I had it on video tape (remember that?) for many years. It would have been broadcast late 83 or early 84 I think, as I first had access to a video recorder in the autumn of 83. A lot of Swindon's centre hasn't changed much since then, but it was nice to see the Mechanics with glass in the windows!

Andy is such an incorrigible, congenital smarta$$ that he often runs the risk of appearing to be in love with the sound of his own voice. I've never thought that to be the case myself, and I've always been an admirer of his wit...but I can see how others might not share my opinion.

That was a pretty nice shopping centre by early 80s standards - better than the brutalist monstrosities I grew up with! And I've seen a few of those weird, seemingly abandoned scales shops myself in other places. Wonder what they're all about....?

When i was young i loved going into town , all the classic shops zodiac toys and also boots in the brunel used to sell amstrad games , i always remember how my mum spending £2.99 on one put a massive smile on my face. The 80s were the days , going to town now is like being forced to go into a torture chamber , ignorant people , 100s of migrants , and a lot of boarded up shops. And just general depression , Oh how times have changed from the wonderful 80s. We happily lived without Vape & CBD shops back then.
What an engaging presence he has in front of a camera I think he missed his calling; he could have made a great humorist or TV presenter.

You get a tour of Swindon and Penhill in Andy's (2015?) book Complicated Game. It is the most entertaining book on songwriting that I have ever read.

When i was young i loved going into town , all the classic shops zodiac toys and also boots in the brunel used to sell amstrad games , i always remember how my mum spending £2.99 on one put a massive smile on my face. The 80s were the days , going to town now is like being forced to go into a torture chamber , ignorant people , 100s of migrants , and a lot of boarded up shops. And just general depression , Oh how times have changed from the wonderful 80s. We happily lived without Vape & CBD shops back then.

Yes, the sun shines into the Box tunnel on Brunel's birthday - but not the full length. It is such a long tunnel that that would be almost impossible.
