Idk about Mario though 🤔
Its the absolute worst feeling ever. Like Mario should just walk away from the castle at that point. And for speedruns, I hold my breath because its such an instant run killer right near the end of the run if they die. But at least we can all agree on metal cap.
The only reason what made me like the level less, because otherwise this is the level where the Wing Cap really shines and you can use its mechanics to its full potential because of how high you can get up the stage
It's almost as bad as the Red Coin mission in Hazy Maze Cave when getting the metalhead cap. If you get caught in the current you'll be thrown out of the level outside the castle and to get back you'll have to go all the way back to the basement, enter the level find the secret portal and start all over again. But you'd really need to suck at the game for it to happen. So yeah they both suck.
i don't feel like the 100 coin stars should be part of the star ratio the data should've excluded the 100 coin star and then created a category based on 100 coin stars for each level and how people feel about each 100 coin star.
Due to the 100 coin star being the least popular star on most stages I feel it would have been more informative to list the least popular non-100 coin star for most levels. But I did love the video all the same!
I feel like a lot of the negative attention directed at Wet Dry World has more to do with its unsettling atmosphere, with the stage’s background art and music. The stars themselves aren’t too bad.
I do think the level is very unique. Changing the water level and discovering an underwater city is quite an enjoyable experience. One of my top 5 favorite courses
Wet Dry World is divisive, and I expected it to be. Personally, I love it, it's my third favorite in the game, and that's especially impressive for a water level. Both the stars, the gimmicks and the atmosphere are great (for the most part).
6:21 that's 100% a big part of it and you're right, but i think another big reason dire dire dock's 100-coin star is so hated is that there's also the risk of the big gaping suction cave that boots you out the level
Glad to have participated in this survey! Also i like how you made paintings for Big Boo's Haunt, Hazy Mazy Cave, Shifting Sand Land, Dire Dire Docks, Snowman's Land, Tick Tock Clock (kinda) and Rainbow Cruise, and also used custom drawings for the other stars!
@@betafurret1503 No, it doesn't. It's the one that's a barrier preventing you from going straight to Bowser 2. However, Snowman's Land does have a painting.
After playing the Galaxies for the first time this year, I really can't articulate how grateful I am they ditched 100 coin stars (purples be damned). Honestly I'm still kinda miffed they continued them in Sunshine with how clearly unpopular they were among players (even back then), but they were obviously scrapping for content in that game in more ways than one. One of the reasons Whomp's is so good and accessible is because of the abundance of coins making that challenge quick/trivial, which it should've been for every stage imo.
I think 100 coin stars can be very fun if the level is designed in such a way that it isn't a massive pain to get that many coins. In Super Mario Sunburn it is _much_ more convenient to get the 100 coin shines due to the game not booting you out in between shines and the more generous availability of coins in general through minor changes such as making red coins worth 2 coins like they were in 64. I think that if enough thought is put behind their design then they can be really fun, but that's just not the case in vanilla 64 and Sunshine unfortunately.
Considering Whomp's 100, I wonder why people disliked Tiny-Huge Island's 100, when there are over 180 coins to collect? Did the average player not realize you could ground pound the giant goombas for a blue each?
One thing I noticed is that people in general didn't like the 100-coin star. I like the concept of it. It encourages exploration. But at a certain point, the level starts overstaying its welcome. I'm liking that some of the romhacks that cut down the coins required for the coin star, because the romhackers know how tedious the coin star is, generally speaking.
I don't think a lot of people are comfortable with the idea of just existing in a world anymore. They play games for the objectives, and the 100 coin stars easily take the most effort.
In my experience, coins got to be really scarce in almost every course. I don’t mind exploring, but having to comb through every corner for a a few little coins gets frustrating after a while
@@gigastrike2 What are you talking about? The opposite is the case. SM64 is a twenty-four year old game. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Persona 5 are both 2017 games.
For levels like Big Boos Haunt and Whomp’s Fortress, it isn’t too bad, but for Dire Dire Docks, Jolly Roger Bay and Rainbow Ride, it just isn’t fun in the least
Compared to other games of the time like Spyro, Gex and Banjo, the 100-coin star missions in Mario 64 aren't nearly as tedious. There's usually more than the necessary amount, which prevents the whole thing from feeling like you're looking for a needle in a haystack, and exploring almost every bit of the environment after tackling mission based stars is pretty satisfying; makes the player feel like a master of the levels on offer.
I didn't even know this survey was being done, I would definitely have participated if I had known. Hope you do more, maybe for other N64 games like DK64 and Banjo-Kazooie? I'm in
Whomp's Fortress's popularity can generally boil down to its relatively small size, packed with easily over 130 coins, and every star can be collected in your earliest visit, none requiring any Caps. A good player could clock it under 10 minutes. The most popular star, Princess Peach's Secret Slide, probably like for many other players, holds a special place in my heart. When I was too young to collect any of BoB's stars in a New Game ( too difficult for me ), I'd instead ask permission from my older sister to play on her 63 Star file, to access more than just BoB, and the only place I was allowed to go, was the Secret Slide, as falling from it didn't deduct any lives ( looking back, none of us were smart enough to notice that loosing lives like I was so used to, had no impact ever on any save file, on top of the fact that the amount of lives is never saved ). I think I've lost count of the amount of times I completed it. I also clearly remember noticing the oddly slower Timer, but no one at home would know for years that this was caused by the game being a PAL version, running at a slowed down pace of 25 FPS. The speedup of the DS remake, when I played it for the first time around 2009, came at quite a shock to me! Anyway, wether it's 2004 or 2021, obtaining this Star and its
@@ayushmansingh3700 In the time I speedrun the game yea, there is 1 hard jump in 100 coins and then there is owless. The main reason there is quite a bit of resets, is because it's very early on and you don't lose too much time restarting.
I liked the survey. It was a neat statistics video too. I think the reason Dire Dire Docks' 100 coin star is hated so much os because of how hard it is to find all 100 coins. I know for me I had no idea where the last 5 coins were the first time I went for it, and I died like twice while trying to get the 5 coins in front of the level exit in the Submarine pen. Not fun.
@@williamstier6445 Especially in the case of Dire Dire Dock. There is no threat in this level, especially when you reach the second area. But you have to traverse every bit of the level because it has 106 coins only. Meaning that you need to get the Blue Switch, and you can't miss more than three Red Coins. It's obnoxious; it would've been better if more of these levels had leeway.
Tall Tall Mountain is my favorite due to nostalgia. As a kid, I played SM64 through the Wii virtual console. I was pretty bad at games, so it was rare that I beat the basement before losing interest and starting over the next time I played. As a result, TTM has had this mystique to it because I so seldom made it there, but I liked it as a level. Heck, my nostalgia towards TTM may be bleeding into my opinion on mountain levels in Mario games in general. So many mountain levels in mario games just give me this "you've come so far, but you still have a little ways to go." Vibe.
Tall Tall Mountain, Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Road, Whomp's and Big Boo's are my favorites. Honorable mention to Bob-omb, Lava Land and Cool Cool Mountain.
This was a really interesting video to watch, never would have guessed the most hated stage. I think if you were to do another video in this style I think it would be really interesting to do one on people's favorite and least favorite dungeon and dungeon bosses in The legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.
The problem there is that too many people have childhood trauma from the Water Temple when their brains were too squishy to figure it out. Guys, it's not a bad dungeon. It's not a hard dungeon either. Just don't forget to go under the buoy in the central tower, make sure you have three keys before you start opening locked doors, and make sure you have two keys before going after the Boss Key. And for crying out loud, consult your freaking dungeon map if you can't figure out where to go! I'd get it more if there was a freestanding key or something, but everything's in chests! It's just bias.
Taking this survey made me realize which courses I had bad memories of and never enjoyed, and which ones I had good memories of and loved. As a kid I never liked Tiny Huge Island, and when I play it now I still don't get the same satisfaction completing it as I do with other courses. But as a kid I always had great memories of Rainbow Ride, and as an adult I still enjoy playing it even though a lot of people say it's their least favorite course.
@@rosheafan I think for me, as a kid it was mostly the water and the boss basses in it that I disliked, and also the potential to slip off the course or to fall back to where you were before. The wall in the small version where you start the level also bothered me as a kid since you had to find another way to get through it or around it (talking from a casual stand-point).
@@DusterDan35 I would say that the only thing I hated while doing 101% were the Beaver Bother minigame (Also lag I guess, funny me making it in original hardware) But overall, pretty good stuff
@@charautreal I beat the game on original hardware as well. Beaver Bother was a pain but it wasn't my least favroite. There was a few races and Diddy's cabin room which was a pain for me. I enjoyed the game but there is around 10 golden bananas that are unbalanced.
I’m surprised how many people disliked Big Boo’s Haunt 100 coins because of how many coins there are. I get it’s tedious, but because of all the Boos it won’t take too long
I couldn't agree more with the consensus on Dire, Dire Docks. It's really bad in every respect. The level itself is out of the way and ancillary, the level design is stilted and uninteresting, it takes needlessly long periods of time to get to most of the stars, it has a third chest star and TWO ring stars, and overall manages to evoke no real theme. It's a shameful display for a second water level. By contrast, I'd actually say the first, Jolly Roger Bay, is my favourite level. Not because it has the best level design -- that would be Whomp's Fortress -- but because of how it feels. I only played SM64 as a teenager via emulation, so I don't have childhood memories to be fond for with regards to it, but something about the atmosphere, serenity, and MUSIC of JRB comes together perfectly. It takes me back to a time before I was even born and makes me feel honestly nostalgic. Also, it being so simple means I can really get into a routine for the five minutes it takes to get all seven stars. While not the best level in the game on an objective standpoint, it is my favourite level to play through, no question. The only other serious competitor is Whomp's Fortress.
Agreed, JRB is super underrated. I was pleasantly surprised how popular Lethal Lava Land was as well. I think that course is my favorite designed because of how it flows together, especially once you grab a Koopa Shell.
@@thekeyandthegate4093 I think LLL is just okay-ish, personally. It does get brownie points for having a decent flow of movement, but I simply cannot abide the fact that it is such a ludicrous mess spatially. It don't HATE it like some other stages, but it is really pretty random. If I were to rank the 15 stages, it'd probably go like this: 1) JRB 2) WF 3) CCM 4) TTM 5) BOB 6) RR 7) TTC 8) BBH 9) SSL 10) LLL 11) SL 12) WDW 13) HMC 14) THI 15) DDD For my money, all the levels worse than LLL are the ultra-forgettable Snowman's Land as well as the four levels which I actively dislike playing to some extent. LLL is, essentially, the bottom of the acceptable barrel content-wise. Frankly, it's such a shame that the game's best content is all scrunched up at the beginning; TTM is the only later-game saving grace.
Honestly i see it oppositely. Dire dire docks was a level i enjoyed and getting the starts didnt take long. However jolly roger bay is a level i literally cannot stand. Its boring, not much atmospheric, and getting the stars are fustrating for me. I usually save jolly roger bay for last. And i tend to revisit dire dire docks a lot
@@basilmybeloved7170 Interesting! Personally, a lot of the "magic" of JRB rests in the first star... the fogginess, dark atmosphere, music... none of it is particularly hi-fi, but it works. And while I can't speak to your experience of the game, I'll reiterate that I only first experienced the game through emulation. A lot of the reason I like the stage is because of how it makes me feel and the relationship/perspective it gives me towards someone playing at the time. In objective terms -- level design-wise -- it's like, not THAT great. None of the game's levels are actually phenomenal mind you (TF is the best, frankly, because it's concise like when your 9th grade teacher gives you a 400 word-limit essay), but if we're discarding everything save the geometry then it'd likely sit around #8 or #9. I would contend that DDD's level design is still worse. Its use of space is really poor, with a lot of empty space wherein the area available does is not justified by the content you get by crossing it. The first room has a very large top with pretty much just 5 coins and the manta ray. The second room, more egregiously, has tucked two stars in one side and then like, 10 coins way over the other side. It's very ugly and boxy, too. Granted, I can appreciate that it would be somewhat difficult to manage the space in the dawn of the 3D era considering the shadow of the platforms above water in the sub room, but it's still ugly. Plus, of course, the infamous tunnel is just absurd. It serves no purpose except to make stuff take longer. I mean really, are they testing your ability to swim up and then back down? The level also features the most egregious example of the caps just being keys for ~9 different stars. And let's not forget the "screw you" suction hole of doom. Common to both water stages are just barely over 100 coins for the coin star, but for my money JRB has a better distribution of coins for what is generally a pretty tedious task. Overall, while neither stage has great objecive level design, I think DDD is still the worse level.
0:40 I think quite a few of the "emulator/other" votes could've been people playing the game on a DS (unless there was a question later to specify what was that other platform people played on)
I feel that some of the 16% (Emulator/Other) might have been people that beat M64 DS first (or only). This is fascinating data nonetheless; reminds me of the Wii Voting Channel back in the day.
How in the world did Dire Dire Dock beat Mario Over the Rainbow for worst level?!?!? Is everyone experiencing collective amnesia? This is the level that kicks you to the start of the game every time you fall down, forcing you to climb back to the top of the castle just to retry the challenge. Compare that to DDD that's has sharks, a whirl pool and a cool submarine. I'm floored. Also great art. Whoever did the art for the video deserves a commendation.
Yea, but it's pretty easy not to fall though, and it's just one star. Trash tier course for sure, but I can definitely see why Dire Dire Docks can be viewed as more tedious. Also, while the Submarine is dockedl the level suffers some massive performance issues, which is really the only time you get them in the entire game, so it's uniquely bad in that regard.
Interesting. My favorite level is Rainbow Ride. I love how much of a challenge it can be. It really feels like a true test of your skills before fighting Bowser. My least favorite is Tick Tock Clock. The camera getting stuck on the walls is absolute hell and makes climbing the clock awkward.
It has a couple of the more tedious stars - the elevator for the 8 red coins and the 100 stars due to the structure of the level requires some backtracking no matter how you approach it. Also having the Metal Cap be inside the level makes it tedious to get that particular cap which I think subtracts points. It's a mixed bag to me there are things I like and things I don't like.
Some really terrible performance issues when the Sub is docked which are worth mentioning. Only time you really get slowdown like that in the entire game.
This was a really cool video and a really creative idea. I never knew I'd enjoy seeing how much other people enjoyed each level/star. I hope you do something like this for each Mario game
I got the community post for the survey recommended by UA-cam, and I did it, but then when I came back to UA-cam the page was automatically refreshed and I didn't know the name of the channel, so it was like I sent a message in the bottle out it in the sea, with my answers in it, and had no idea who would read them. I'm glad I got the video itself recommended, it's interesting to see the results!
Some (hopefully constructive) criticisms: Those flipping transitions between pie charts in the beginning are very flashy, I would have considered putting a photosensitive epilepsy warning for them, or simply using a different transition. I also would have used a "broken heart" icon for the "least favorite" statistic, so that it contrasts to the "heart" icon for the "favorite" statistic, rather than using the "thumbs-down," which makes it contrast to the "thumbs-up" icon for the "like" statistic.
This was really cool! I actually found this thanks to the end screen from your more recent survey of Mario kart 64, but this idea just in general was really cool and I'm glad I followed up that video with this one. I look forward to what else you survey in the future. Obviously it's good that you have a large enough fan base to warrant enough people being part of the survey. Congratulations!
The way the video was done was very nice, leaving the current top and bottom leaders so we can compare really helped. and the results werent really arguable
I feel like you really could have left the 100 coin star for every level off of the survey, it's the last star everyone goes for full completion and they are all just a grind.
I thought the same, that was definitely my version! My guess is he's only focusing on the original sm64, classing the ds remake as a separate game due to the amount of differences and changes
@@WigWoo1 A port is literally the same game with the same name in another platform. DS has more stars, more levels and 3 more characters. Please tell me how that makes it the same game. We can argue whether it's a remake, but it's definitely not a port.
For all those like myself who wished to know the least popular non-100 red coin stars, from the graphs they seem to be HMC red coins at 28% followed by DDD chests in the current at 29%
Is anyone really surprised that DD-Docks is universally disliked to such degrees? I'm not. Felt like it was edging against my soul and raping me of my motivation to play.
that fish traumatized me when i was little. even after everything i have seen in other games, i still get uneasy whenever i have to leave that beach on the huge version
Before this vid, i never thought about my fave to least world in SM64. Salute to the creator for having me think about it. Ima say fave is shifting sand & least is dire dire. In fact the only thing i like about dire dire docks is the music. Fave stars i dont think about. But this was cool. You should do a mario kart or banjo kazooie survey!
Because this survey didn't have a formula for an Overall Score like other videos in this series, I decided to calculate one myself. I know this is a bit late, but it's better than never. Calculation: (Level Likeability X .75) + (Star Average X .25) + (Favorite X 2) - (Least Favorite X 2) rounded to the tenth place. I made the Level Likeability vs Star Average a weighted average favoring Level Likeability for several reasons: for the full courses, the Star Average did not change as drastically due to already being an standard average of 8 items, so giving them too much weight would make the course scores less distinct; for the shorter stages there were normally other important factors to consider such as the method of finding the hidden stage, power-ups unlocked, and/or the Bowser fights that the Star Average doesn't account for; and for ALL stages there were elements like aesthetics that can affect a players enjoyment in ways that are harder to quantify. In other words, stars are important, but not as much as how everyone voted they liked the level overall. Meanwhile, the multiplication for the favorite and least favorite section is based on how Snooplax does the formula in later videos. For the ranking list, the stages are indented to make it easier to differentiate them from the courses, in case you only wanted to judge the latter. From Most Popular to Least Popular Level (with Scores): Whomp's Fortress: 120 Bob-omb Battlefield: 103.4 Lethal Lava Land: 95.7 Cool, Cool Mountain: 87.4 Big Boo's Haunt: 86.9 Princess's Secret Slide: 85.4 Tall, Tall Mountain: 80.8 Bowser in the Dark World: 77.1 Bowser in the Sky: 73.7 Bowser in the Fire Sea: 68.3 Cavern of the Metal Cap: 64.5 Snowman's Land: 63 Wet-Dry World: 61.6 Shifting Sand Land: 61.5 Tick Tock Clock: 55.2 Hazy Maze Cave: 52.1 Vanish Cap Under the Moat: 50 Tiny-Huge Island: 49.6 Jolly Roger Bay: 46.3 Tower of the Wing Cap: 30.6 Secret Aquarium: 29.3 Rainbow Ride: 9.9 Dire, Dire Docks: .2 Wing Mario Over the Rainbows: -2.7 (making this the only negative score) So it seems that people actually DO generally dislike Wing Mario Over the Rainbows more than Dire, Dire Docks! Edit: Fixed some odd spacing issues; should be good now
I was personally never bothered by the 100-coin stars since the levels are fun to explore. However, it’s not fun if there’s barely over 100. There should be some wiggle room so players don’t have to comb the entire level for coins.
Nice video and survey! If you're looking for another survey video to do, I think a Super Smash Bros 64 video could also be a fun idea, which characters people like playing as/like playing against, and what stages they like.
I think the fact you can control the water level depending on what height you enter the painting is a neat gimick, the level is extremely unique itself and it's actually very easy to get most of the stars, not a lot of tedium. I think it deserves to be in the middle tier of levels.
Don't you just find it ironic how Dire Dire Docks and Jolly Roger Bay are the most frustrating levels yet it they have the most relaxing music tracks in the entire game?
Tiny Huge Island was too hard for me as a kid playing 64 DS. When I went back on recently after years of not playing it, I looked at what stars I had and hadn't got (I had collected 90 something stars) and none of them were from THI
Fun fact: Wet Dry World was my first ever time playing 3D, not just m64. Older cousin got it for Christmas, at some point he let me take over mid run. I didn't know how to do analog stick, so I just d-pad flailed around under water to death hahaha
Interestingly I think the secret starts (toad/mips) show a useful game design tidbit: Some secret novelty is great, but the more you have, the less fun it is. The threshold might vary, though, especially depending on the kind of game it is.
This reminds me that I need to go back to play 64 again. The video was great and I’ve love to see this done with Mario kart tracks. I’d love to see double dash but Mario kart 64 would probably have a bigger survey pull since it’s on more platforms
seems like people really don't like swimming and bottomless pits, unless its a bowser stage. they also really like small sub-levels like whomp's tower or the igloo where the penalties for missing a jump aren't instant death.
Interesting take on the poll. Im one of those divisive Hazy Mazers considering that course my favorite despite it being one of the "underworlds" with sulphuric gas being a big component. It's the only mainline course where you get the quicksilver derived metal cap. Sm64 is masonic digital ritual (look up Owen Cyclops for the breakdown). Mario is Mercury. I think this might be even more interesting if you had left out the 100 coin stars. They're always the least favorite and only for people that are determined to complete everything. It feels like every gamer has played through this jaunt. Generally speaking, the initial worlds or terrestrial worlds are the strongest (no poor worlds on the main floor) the underworld has some gems (dire dire docks is dogshit, worst in the game by far while Lava land and Hazy Maze are chock full of depth and intrigue) and they get a bit weaker upstairs. Tiny big stands out up top along with tall tall mtn and wet dry world to me. Tick tock clock and rainbow cruise are threadbare and extraordinarily difficult sure. They also feel desolate compared with Whomps fortress or Bob Omb's Battlefield for example. Classic tech demo for the Rare N64 platformers to improve upon. Sm64's golden aspect is Mario's movement which debatedly has never been improved upon. What a game
An overview/analysis video along with a link to a spreadsheet of the full results would have been much more interesting than just reading each percentage.
The 100 coins star in Dire Dire Docks is so hard to get because of the few coins that seem hidden at the beginning of the level. And then there's the coins near the whirlpool.
I’d be interesting to see if / how much these opinions differ when talking about the DS version. It made a several changes to some of the worse levels and I can’t help but wonder if people consider them a improvement
Tick Tock Clock is better, along with Whomp's Fortress. Though, I'd call them both good levels in the original game. Hazy Maze Cave is arguably worse because not much changes, and the toxins actively halt the character any time they jump in (making navigation without a power-up nearly impossible unlike the original). Dire, Dire Docks is still boring, but at least the 100 coins is better. I don't think many of the opinions would change if the DS version were used. At best, some lesser liked levels would be the slightest bit more favourable.
It's too bad that the 100-coin star got last place for LLL. That one is super fun to do while surfing on the koopa shell. You can get at least 90 coins before finishing things off inside the volcano.
I recently decided to 100% Mario 64 for the first time since I got 3D all stars (my first time playing this game) and I loved it so much the first time that I ended up completing the game 3 times within a week. At first, I hated how clunky the game felt, but it gradually grew on me over the course of my playthrough and it feels so good to actually pull of some tricky platforming to skip some sections. Once you understand where everything is on the maps, they become like a playground. Wanting to get better and faster at completing this game made it become my favorite (former being odyssey). This game has helped me get over my anxiety when it comes to water levels (because things swimming at you in the water is scary af) and now dire dire docks is one of my favorite levels. Still trying to get myself to get through Sunshine because of it though. That being said, I hate sand now because of this game. 10/10 would recommend.
0:26 is the ds version considered an entirely diff version? thats where i first played sm64, and ik it has a lot of differences/new features, but the core game is basically the same yk?
I never got to finish the survey, but I like the idea of community surveys. Why not do a survey on the Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask dungeons? For collectible data you could use Gold Skulltulas for OoT and Stray Fairies for MM, plus MM has the Spider House minidungeons, too.
This is how I’d rank the 15 main courses 15) Rainbow Ride 14) Dire, Dire Docks 13) Lethal Lava Land 12) Tick Tock Clock 11) Snowman’s Land 10) Whomp’s Fortress 9) Tiny-Huge Island 8) Big Boo’s Haunt 7) Tall, Tall Mountain 6) Jolly Roger Bay 5) Hazy Maze Cave 4) Shifting Sand Land 3) Cool, Cool Mountain 2) Bob-omb Battlefield 1) Wet-Dry World

Agreed, seeing the 100 coin star constantly get voted for worst star was expected, but still pretty repetitive.
Yeah, we can all agree 100 coin stars are the worst
I agree 100% I thought that they shouldn't be with the other stars when he said they would be included
I am surprised BOB was an exception, considering you pretty much do Star 5 to get 100.

Kaze! I'm a huge fan of the Tick Tock Clock and recently played your Traumatic Tick Tock Tower! Great job with that rom hack! 😎
Due to the 100 coin star being the least popular star on most stages I feel it would have been more informative to list the least popular non-100 coin star for most levels. But I did love the video all the same!
Please. Basically all 100 stars being the most disliked is redundant.

I find that so weird given that the 100 coin star is my favorite on every stage
Pleasantly surprised that Wet Dry World wasn't too far down, and actually got a pretty nice amount of favourites compared to its score.
Wet Dry World is pretty underrated. I was expecting it to be lower and I’m glad it wasnt
I feel like a lot of the negative attention directed at Wet Dry World has more to do with its unsettling atmosphere, with the stage’s background art and music. The stars themselves aren’t too bad.
I hated wet dry world but now I love it :)
I thought Dire Dire Docks had a painting…

After playing the Galaxies for the first time this year, I really can't articulate how grateful I am they ditched 100 coin stars (purples be damned). Honestly I'm still kinda miffed they continued them in Sunshine with how clearly unpopular they were among players (even back then), but they were obviously scrapping for content in that game in more ways than one. One of the reasons Whomp's is so good and accessible is because of the abundance of coins making that challenge quick/trivial, which it should've been for every stage imo.
I actually love the idea of collecting 100 coins and enjoy it on most levels, but levels with barely more than 100 coins make it annoying.
I think in Sunshine These Stars were fine
I love the 100 coin stars, they are a way more dynamic challenge

Anyway, wether it's 2004 or 2021, obtaining this Star and its
Everything about it is great.
I get the feeling that if you surveyed speedrunners, Whomp's Fortress would be one of the most hated levels because 90% of speedruns die there.

If you think that's where they die, just look at what Shifting Sand Land does to them!
The minimalistic graphics for each level are amazing! Kudos to the graphic designer who made them :)
Not fun.
I forgot about the level exit thing. It only got me once, but I was so tilted.
@@Lex_Araden Oh, that really ticked me off. I was 5 coins away from the 100 coin star and sucked into that level exit. I was pretty annoyed by it lol.
For the most part I don't think the hundred coin stars are so much hard. Just very tedious.
Calling it now, Water Temple would be the least favorite.
@@murphmariotwopointoh7714 100%
The problem there is that too many people have childhood trauma from the Water Temple when their brains were too squishy to figure it out. Guys, it's not a bad dungeon. It's not a hard dungeon either. Just don't forget to go under the buoy in the central tower, make sure you have three keys before you start opening locked doors, and make sure you have two keys before going after the Boss Key. And for crying out loud, consult your freaking dungeon map if you can't figure out where to go! I'd get it more if there was a freestanding key or something, but everything's in chests! It's just bias.
The water levels were some of my favorite simply for that music. It always made me feel so relaxed and at peace.
Why don't people like THI?
@@rosheafan I think for me, as a kid it was mostly the water and the boss basses in it that I disliked, and also the potential to slip off the course or to fall back to where you were before. I actually enjoyed taking the survey. It was fun ranking the SM64 content
Glad to see some love for Jolly Roger Bay! It's incredibly atmospheric and serene.
If I were to rank the 15 stages, it'd probably go like this:
1) JRB
2) WF
3) CCM
4) TTM
5) BOB
6) RR
7) TTC
8) BBH
9) SSL
10) LLL
11) SL
12) WDW
13) HMC
14) THI
15) DDD
For my money, all the levels worse than LLL are the ultra-forgettable Snowman's Land as well as the four levels which I actively dislike playing to some extent.
0:40
I think quite a few of the "emulator/other" votes could've been people playing the game on a DS (unless there was a question later to specify what was that other platform people played on)
I feel that some of the 16% (Emulator/Other) might have been people that beat M64 DS first (or only).

I agree. That level and all of rainbow ride/cruise is my most hated shit in super mario 64
You only have to visit Mario Over the Rainbow once vs collecting all 7 stars in Dire, Dire Docks.
I absolutely love the vector art you used to represent the various stages. Good stuff!

@@frankieseward8667 you know the stage is complex when that is the only one to get a map
@@Underworlder5 Hazy ➡️Maze⬅️ Cave
It has a couple of the more tedious stars - the elevator for the 8 red coins and the 100 stars due to the structure of the level requires some backtracking no matter how you approach it. Also having the Metal Cap be inside the level makes it tedious to get that particular cap which I think subtracts points. It's a mixed bag to me there are things I like and things I don't like.

Some (hopefully constructive) criticisms:
Those flipping transitions between pie charts in the beginning are very flashy, I would have considered putting a photosensitive epilepsy warning for them, or simply using a different transition.
I also would have used a "broken heart" icon for the "least favorite" statistic, so that it contrasts to the "heart" icon for the "favorite" statistic, rather than using the "thumbs-down," which makes it contrast to the "thumbs-up" icon for the "like" statistic.
Also the least favorite being on the top left, on top of the most favorite, is a little disorienting.
Can you do a Banjo-Kazooie one next?

From Most Popular to Least Popular Level (with Scores):
Whomp's Fortress: 120
Bob-omb Battlefield: 103.4

Interestingly I think the secret starts (toad/mips) show a useful game design tidbit: Some secret novelty is great, but the more you have, the less fun it is. The threshold might vary, though, especially depending on the kind of game it is.
Dire Dire Docks is just so minimal. I still like the opening section. It has an interesting mix of lively animal life and haunting whirlpool.
It’s too bad the orange fish and the shark kill you. (What even is the point of them, they don’t chase you)
The little graphic designs for all the courses are so wonderful.
I love Jolly Roger Bay especially the music ... Ya'll be tweaking hard af!
Wet-Dry World is my favorite of these levels... such an eerie setting
What a game
Great video and great video idea! Well executed!
Shocked how mixed of a reception THI had. That’s always been one of my favorites
I really like how the format of this video! Is really easy to follow and kept me interested! Can you do more like this?
An overview/analysis video along with a link to a spreadsheet of the full results would have been much more interesting than just reading each percentage.
The 100 coins star in Dire Dire Docks is so hard to get because of the few coins that seem hidden at the beginning of the level. And then there's the coins near the whirlpool.
Great analysis! Thanks for uploading!
Good video! Some of the responses surprised me, but most I agreed with. Shocked with DDD's rating though.
I love the graphics you made for this!
Wow this video was great, I sure would want to see more of this format! The title was somewhat misleading though 😄
I didn't participate but LLL is easily my favourite. I haven't seen the winner but I'm so glad it has a 10.4% love rate
LLL is one of my favs too, it's my favorite of the Alliteration trio
Lethal Lava Land
Shifting Sand Land
and Dire Dire Docks
@@blazicgd Also known as the ONLY good one in the alliteration trio.
It's too bad that the 100-coin star got last place for LLL. That one is super fun to do while surfing on the koopa shell. You can get at least 90 coins before finishing things off inside the volcano.
I love statistics and taking surveys. Do more :3
I recently decided to 100% Mario 64 for the first time since I got 3D all stars (my first time playing this game) and I loved it so much the first time that I ended up completing the game 3 times within a week.

I remember taking this survey! It's cool to see all that put together into a video. It's super interesting to see what people rank everything.
I honestly prefer collecting the 100 coin star of Dire Dire Docks than Hazy Maze Cave
This is how I’d rank the 15 main courses
15) Rainbow Ride
14) Dire, Dire Docks
13) Lethal Lava Land
12) Tick Tock Clock
11) Snowman’s Land
10) Whomp’s Fortress
9) Tiny-Huge Island
8) Big Boo’s Haunt
7) Tall, Tall Mountain
6) Jolly Roger Bay
5) Hazy Maze Cave
4) Shifting Sand Land
3) Cool, Cool Mountain
2) Bob-omb Battlefield
1) Wet-Dry World
Nice, I thought I was the only one who disliked Dire Dire Docks but clearly I was wrong lol.
