Your best take was somewhere over the rainbow. It’s underrated and is actually quite fun. The worst take was haunted books. It’s probably because it was the first star I collected, but it deserves better 😂

In Tall, Tall Mountain, why don't collect all the coins in the slide first and collect the rest outside on stable ground? That's what I do.

I was thinking the same thing. Because after you complete the slide in the N64 version, you can just jump down to safe ground and get the other coins on the mountain. It's not like in the DS version where it truly IS annoying, because you can't jump down anymore and instead have to go for the coin rings on the mountain top.
The only way to know that wind is there is trial and error or a guide

Apparently you are unaware of the fact you can jump over the railing back to the beginning of the level after doing the slide on Tall Tall Mountain
Most of the early ratings is "This is the worst cause its easy to die and I suck at the game but that's the game's fault". I stopped when he said Hazy maze cave is a bad level because it has insta death traps...that boulder does 3 damage, NOT insta death. You literally have to die on PURPOSE there to get that clip... and there is NO reason to longjump that pit backwards...EVER.)
SHame cause it's an interesting video, but nothing kills a rating video faster than "I never actually played the game but going to talk like I've been playing for years". Note to self, when a video opens with "is this top tier game REALLY as good as people think it is or is it overrated?", expect to see a series of "I don't get why people like this popular game, it's not good cause I keep failing to make easy jumps."

@@MarioMastar well.. your comment sounds rude.. but.. I must agree with it, I've been playing this game for 28 years on a "regular" basis, and hearing stuff like
"the owl doesnt come back you need to exit the level" (it just slowly goes back to the level entrance, you dont have to exit the stage)
or
"the star spawn during the slide which is stupid idea" (yeah just start with the slide and no more problem)
or
"the eel in the bay it's not fun and not unique" ( it's the only star like that in the game how is it not unique !?"
or
"2 stars with the same name this game is garbaaaggeeee" (but the objective is the same .. so who cares ?)
or
"jumping to that star on the mushroom in TTM is haaaardd" (how is it hard you have one jump to do it's on the same level with barely a way to fall off, jump is A, you learn to jump in the first minute of gameplay..)
there are so many example where I was just laughing at this point, like the ice house in SL, and the amount of stars that "i dont know.. it's just.. there!"
also the fact he complains about the pirahna in tiny huge island even if you just have to hit 5 of them, but gives the first place to a star that you need to find the correct order of the chests.. in water.. otherwise you lose HP and risk drowning..
cool video to watch anyway, but yeah, it feels like he is someone who didnt play it in the last 10 years and tries to place stars in order with criteria he doesnt even follow himself.

@@MarioMastarwell no. As he said SM64 is a part of video game history but it IS also quite frustrating and hard sometimes, way less satisfying to play than later games. Still a great game i think but i wouldn’t agree with it being the best mario game for example
@@goldeer7129it’s not a hard game at all. Literally all the 2D Mario games on the older consoles make SM64 seem like child’s play in terms of difficulty
surprisingly, the 100-coin Tall Tall Mountain star never gave me trouble, I just did the slide first, jumped out of the mountainside, then climbed back up the mountain to get the rest of the coins

The owl goes back to the same spot after a minute or so in "fall onto the cage island", but it still makes it tedious to do it
You dont have to leave the level for the owl to come back. He comes back in less then a minute
There's a lot of stars that make me question if this guy actually played the game more than once just to write this rating system... The boulders in hazy maze cave do NOT insta kill you and you never have to jump that pit backwards...EVER. He did that on purpose to get that clip... just to say "Yeah this level sucks". Also, Tiny Huge Island is a bad level? I'm not "moving on" from that take.

I won't continue watching. Two mistakes in the first few stars is lack of either research, expertise or talent or just laziness.
The other mistake is, that you can do the slide in Tall-Tall-Mountain before getting the other coins.
14:34 I saw you doing this earlier in the video too but this is the time I want to point it out. Do you seriously not know how to ground pound a boo? You don't have to circle around their back and dive into them. Just jump so that you're above them and Then do the ground pound and you beat them faster and easier
I remember being stuck on 119 stars for so long as a kid because I couldn’t get the 100 coin star in Rainbow Ride. After months of trying, I finally did it and oh man did I ever celebrate.
Really don't get the Tiny Huge Island hate. Always been one of my favorite levels.
it shouldn't even be a question that dire dire docks 100 coin star is the worst, barely over 100 coins in the level, so have to re-get the red coins if you don't do it in the same go, multiple piles of coins that are completely required to find that are in places you wouldn't even think of checking since you can't see coins until you're really close, plus being an underwater stage is just so slow, with multiple things that can happen to make you have to reset like the whirlpool or getting sucked into that vent that sends out outside the castle. just a terrible terrible star
If the Snowman's body misses the head, you can warp back to the beginning and the body will be there again.
I've never been good at that star. Any tips?
@@TheMonarchofMonarchs933 If I recall correctly, I think I jumped off the slide before the switchback down to the ground and got there way before the body did.
@@TheMonarchofMonarchs933 if you jump down to save time, you'll never get it, the ball will roll beside and fall off, you need to "show the way" so you do the slide 100% and you just stand behind it at the end, the snowball will follow you and tadam!

Fun fact: For the Big Boo on the Balcony star if you crawl up the slope you won't slide down. (Intended mechanic)
For the Tall, Tall Mountain 100-coin star, at the end of the slide, you can jump down from that little area and it takes you back to the beginning of the level.
11:07 I highly doubt very many people actually got that star without the wing cap. I mean I'm sure there are plenty people who have but the majority? Yeah right. I mean it says when cap in the name and if you just use the Canon you're just going to fall down. Wing cap from that cannon allows you to glide more with some control so you better use the wing cap
I’m noticing that a lot of these complaints this guy has have more to do with him just sucking at the game rather than there actually being anything wrong with the stars themselves

You can do both! Its a pretty cool concept
For Blast to the Lonely mushroom star on Tall Tall Mountain you can simply run along the rolling log while climbing the mountain and long jump off the end of it, you will land right on the mushroom and you can get the star without ever unlocking the cannon.

6:17 how is it you don't know that you could just stand underneath those books and jump into them like you jump into a block? You're making it harder by trying to jump kick them.
You can just jump out of the hole where the Mysterious Mountainside star is. So for the 100 coins star, you can do the slide first, then collect the remaining coins on the mountain. I can't remember if the star would remain after leaving the sub area, but if it does, then you would also be able to attempt to collect the star as many times as you wish. It is still a 100 coin star, so it is still among the worst. Missing the star is a problem on the DS version, where the hole is blocked off, though I don't think you are forced to do the slide, as the levels have more coins.

The fact that you didn’t even mention the option that you can grab the coins on the slide first before grabbing the coins outside in Tall, Tall moutain is just baffling. Like… why would you grab the coins on the slide last? That’s asking for failure

I think mountain slide first makes it really easy to do? And fun
On big boos balcony there are flat areas on the top of the roof you can walk on easily in Mario cam. Just long jump to the left or right and you are on flat ground. From there you make your way across the top to the middle where the star is
7:15 I find it easy to get the 100 coins at Bob bomb battlefield and I did so without spinning around those pillars. You actually don't need to do so. The thing that's a little more tricky is trying to get the coins that you shoot yourself out of the Canon to get that normally you would go through the hoops of coins to get a star but if you're trying to get all of those coins up there that's more tricky.

It's bad enough you have to stop the fun star collecting and do it once. The second is literally just a rerun.
The amount of critique and complaints in this comment section is very much justified. I love the idea of this video, but this countdown is narrow bias.
Tick tock clock, has 4 defrent setings. At 12 the clock is stoped, at 3 the clock is ticking slov, at 9 the clock is ticking fast, and at 6 the clock is ticking at normal sped.
P.s. I might have switched 3 and 9.

Interesting, in tall tall mountain I've always just done the slide first then jumped out the mountainside back to the start and got the rest of the coins I need, I'm surprised people who've beaten the game multiple times are doing the slide last and trying to awkwardly grab the star while sliding, seems silly😅

Also you don't need to run around the back of boos and punch them I just face away from them so they get close and ground pound, their hitbox is super easy to get

1:57 It's been a long time since I've played Super Mario 64 but I could have sworn when you get through that tunnel and come out the other side you don't have to collect the star that just outside of it and can you just jump over the railing and end up back on the stage again? If that's the case then technically you wouldn't actually have to get your 100th coin on that slide

12:38 Well I mean of course the countdown with the vanish cap is going to be quick otherwise there wouldn't be much challenge to it. I do agree sort of about the wall jump though. I don't think it's that hard to pull off but sometimes I end up jumping in at the wrong angle and not landing on that platform up there with the door

TTM, don’t get the star on the slide, you can get it outside after you get through the slide.
#13 Star's points don't make sense
So, I believe you can jump down from the area where the slide ends and end up back at the beginning of Tall, Tall, Mountain. So I tend to just grab the slide coins first then jump back to the beginning of the level and grab the rest. Easier than trying to jump up to the star on the slide
damn, that top 5 was in my top 5 of worst super mario 64 takes. Truly S tier garbagio.
IMO, top 5 should be: tall tall mountain slide, Big Bully Ice Fight, Bombomb Battlefield cannon and flying cap through the rings, Penguin Slide, and the Hands with Eyes fight in the Pyramid... in some order.
This ranking seems like the "challenging = bad" type, which just isn't right. Yes, Stars that are tedious for no reason should be low, like Elevate for 8 Red coins, but stars that are a well-designed challenge, like for those who 100% the game should be high. For example, Rainbow Ride 100 coins. This is one of the best 100 coin stars in the game imo, because it is a test of how well you've mastered the Wall Jump that the game first taught you in Cool Cool Mountain, 11 levels prior. Then, on the next level, Big Boo's haunt, doing a tricky wall jump was required for 2 of the 7 Stars, and was a big help for the 100 coin star, because it had the blue coin switch. After that, there was an occasional wall jump here and there, but the game saved the best for last; The ultimate wall jump test, with Rainbow Ride 100 coins. If you fail, you restart the entire stage. That's the kind of star that is good in my eyes
Surprised The Big House In The Sky isn't at the bottom. Sitting on the carpet isn't exactly my idea of fun in a platformer, and the fireplace flamethrower is super annoying unless you know exactly where to stand at the end so you don't have to go get the carpet again.
100 coins on tall tall mountain is much easier if you do the slide first. However I’ll agree that it’s poorly designed on the sense that you’ve gotta scale most of the mountain before you can start seriously collecting coins
Bro, you lost me at the #120 star. Go to the slide first, when you exit you are at the beginning of the level and then you can collect the rest of the coins needed. And you can avoid some coins on said slide so the star doesn't spawn in a difficult place. Just... no.
I don't agree with you putting those 100coins stars so badly. It's a great way for a casual player to spend time exploring the map fully, it's very time consuming yes because you don't know where they are. but it is very rewarding. and as a little kid, I did not remember things like that being tedious.
As a kid, I remember I had 119 stars. and never found the 120. unfortunately, both the console and game is lost and never found, so I will never know which star I did not found.. But I remember that was super annoying to just not find the last piece of the puzzle, to finish and be done with the game.
My worst star is the manta Ray star, because the rings are so bugged. It's cool if it was not bugged hitbox

Tall, Tall Mountain 100 coins is easy if you do the slide first. You can just jump down from the end area where the star is.... Surprised you didn't know that. You can even do the slide again this way.
Wall Kicks Will Work is the best star in the whole game.
Jump on the spinny-girl's head at the top of the mountain at spawn, and fly into it.
Nothing more satisfying.
in a 50-star run, i literally avoid Jolly Roger bay bc of Plunder in the Sunkin Ship. It's just annoying.

Whenever I did Tall, Tall Mountain, I always tried to do the slide first for the 100 coin star.
100 coins on Tall Tall Mountain is easy. Just go through the slide first. 100 coins on Rainbow Ride should be #120: if you miss more than two of those blues, it's an automatic fail.
Tall tall mountain and tiny huge being f tier is fair but I feel tall tall got really badly bashed, I've replayed this game alot so I sorta have this all routed but my route for tall tall always hit the slide first since first run and then gof from the bottom to the red coins, imo a d if you don't put the slide at the end. Tiny huge is below f tier, you can route it to get the star before the red coin room, but it's so easy to fall off and die and took me forever to make a inital route. My route now adays plays tiny to start grabbing every coin i can and that means ground pounding every giga goomba for their blue coin, then grab mosx coins in giant before going baxk to small for the remaining coins. Late game 100 coins are my favorites except for rainbow ride that one can join tiny huge below f rank

There is a blue coin in Bom Bom battlefield if you go to any star after you beat koopa the quick a regular koopa will spawn and if you stomp on it you get a blue coin
I actually like the Big Boo’s Balcony since you can just crawl your way. Pretty easy imo.
I played this for the first time on the switch where you can save at any point so if you died on a jump you can just reload and do it again. Had I played this on the original N64 I think I would have lost my mind.
For Snowman's Big Head, you can just stand on the Big Penguin's head and you won't get blown off the mountain.
Right away with the first star you mentioned, just do the slide first, THEN get the coins from the course. Plus if you fall in the slide starting in there, saves time for the next shot
You don't need to leave the level to make the owl respawn in "fall into the cage". He just flies back to the tree, you just need to wait a minute for him to get back

I hate bob-omb battlefield. Its so boring to play and it just has to be the first star you get in the game. I've played through that level so many times because you have to.
I think wiggler is easy to beat because the challenge is supposed to be figuring out how to find them. Observant players will have seen his home above them during the red coin search, but getting to him requires outside of the box thinking so I’ve always ranked it high even if the actual boss is easy to beat once you are on them
That's how i figured it out back in the day. Noticed one of the itty bitty secrets was at the mountain top... but there was no hole? So i figured i had to make it myself

the 100 coin star can be obtained outside of the slide in tall tall mountain however jumping from the ledge does deal fall damage
