I'm half brazilian half italian, I remember on sundays watching Milan play in the morning and then Grêmio in the evening, I didn't even wanted to watch cartoons, for me watching that 2008 Milan squad was more entertaining than anything else, I remember that some days I would pretend to be sick just so I didn't have to go to church to watch Milan play 😂 as soon as the game finished I would grab a ball and start trying to recreate Pirlo's dribble moves, passes and free kicks... Pirlo scored a beautiful goal vs Ghana, made a brilliant assist vs Germany and was a world class playmaker by then. Italy lost in 2012 not because of Spain being that great. In the group stage they were slightly better than the Spanish and drew the match. In the final, half team was blatantly injured or unfit to play. In fact, they played almost half match with 10 men because they had no substitutions left.
In my opinion, Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso made the perfect pair for Milan and Italy. They covered each other and their specific abilities differed from each other tremendously. One was a midfield wizard with vision and precision passing, the other was a midfield tyrant, stamping his presence with a rottweiler kind of aggression and passion to defend and to control the space. You need to have complementing players and I dare not say Batman and Robin because Robin is a side kick. Gattuso was not Pirlo's sidekick, they were EQUAL partners in crime and their legacy with the 2006 World Cup will go on for all time

He was also a no fuss midfielder who was tidy and was also good at defensive work as well as offense. An all rounder in my opinion and complemented the squad very well
