We'll probably never again see a player who could create so many direct chances and be so dangerous from the number 6 position.
And also we'll probably never see a player who will create that much advantage on the pitch despite having so little athleticism and physical tools.
He was still one of the best and most dangerous midfielders in the world in his last season at Juve despite being 36 at the time. I think he surely could have played on that level until 40 at least if he wanted, he just didn't need much atleticism.
A true football giant, superhero. I'm not sure who to pick really, but I think he's a very strong candidate for the best midfielder of the 21st century so far. The guy won EVERYTHING and was a key guy in his teams (club and national team) for about 15 years.

I'm half brazilian half italian, I remember on sundays watching Milan play in the morning and then Grêmio in the evening, I didn't even wanted to watch cartoons, for me watching that 2008 Milan squad was more entertaining than anything else, I remember that some days I would pretend to be sick just so I didn't have to go to church to watch Milan play 😂 as soon as the game finished I would grab a ball and start trying to recreate Pirlo's dribble moves, passes and free kicks... Pirlo is an elegant player for Italy and an excellent free kick specialist. Milan was dumb letting him go to Juventus and started a 9 year dominance of Juventus in Serie A. A deep lying #10 legend for Milan, Juventus and Italy.

I think you forgot to mention his inpact on Italian silver in europs 2012. In 2006 he was more one in the group but in 2012 he was clearly the best in a Italian team that overpreformed.

In 2006 Pirlo was way more than a bit player, he led the tournament in assists for goodness sake lol...above the likes of Zidane, and other playmakers in the tournament.

Pirlo scored a beautiful goal vs Ghana, made a brilliant assist vs Germany and was a world class playmaker by then.
Italy lost in 2012 not because of Spain being that great. In the group stage they were slightly better than the Spanish and drew the match. In the final, half team was blatantly injured or unfit to play. In fact, they played almost half match with 10 men because they had no substitutions left.

In my opinion, Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso made the perfect pair for Milan and Italy. They covered each other and their specific abilities differed from each other tremendously. One was a midfield wizard with vision and precision passing, the other was a midfield tyrant, stamping his presence with a rottweiler kind of aggression and passion to defend and to control the space.
You need to have complementing players and I dare not say Batman and Robin because Robin is a side kick. Gattuso was not Pirlo's sidekick, they were EQUAL partners in crime and their legacy with the 2006 World Cup will go on for all time

When he needed a more defensive strategy, the much underrated and understated Massimo Ambrosini would replace Seedorf.
He was also a no fuss midfielder who was tidy and was also good at defensive work as well as offense. An all rounder in my opinion and complemented the squad very well
When Pirlo and Totti were on the pitch, italian attackers had only to run, the ball automatically went on their feet.
I’m italo-Brazilian and Pirlo is literally in my top 5 players of all time. Saw him live at Maracanã Stadium scoring a SCREAMER free kick goal against Mexico for the 2013 Confederations Cup. 2x1 Italy, goals from Pirlo and Balotelli. I’ll never forget that day.

I'm a Milan supporter and I watched Pirlo all his career, he was an exceptional player, great vision, and superb technique, but the greatest playmaker of Italy is Roberto Baggio by far, even a more complete player.

Pirlo was such a unique player, even in his day there was no one else like him, and certainly not today. Verratti was supposed to be the next Pirlo but he's not the same type of player.

My guy you can't compare the greatest CM/Regista ever to someone outside of the Top10, Ruud Gullit, Seedorf, Frank Rijkaard, and Demetrio Albertini are all better than Xabi Alonso, especially Albertini, Pirlo wasn't the first Pirlo, he was the next Albertini.
