    A short grounding practice using the floor to stabilize and care for your lower back & SI Joint.
    #yinyoga #yogaforlowerback #yogaforsijoint
    Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or physical therapist and my suggestions for this area/issue are based purely on my personal experience. I recommend you reach out to your healthcare provider and/or physical therapist if you are having lower back pain or pelvic pain and get an accurate diagnosis and suggestions for movements to stabilize and care for this area/issue and ask them if these movements are okay for your specific diagnosis/issues.
    This 35 minute Yin Yoga practice for the SI Joint/Sacroiliac Joint was a request from the community. We use the floor to stabilize and care for our lower back and sacroiliac joint bringing more awareness and release to the area. As someone who suffers from SI Joint flareups and pain, I know how difficult it can be to work with this issue and how having a flareup can change your practice. A few suggestions: reach out to a physical therapist for recommended movement/stabilization for this area, rest during an acute flareup and allow the inflammation to subside before continuing your practice, journal or note when/what poses/where/how it flares up or you feel it more and use this to inform your practice (make adjustments or reach out to a yoga/physical therapist for ideas on how to work with this information), include a daily curcumin supplement in your diet to help reduce overall inflammation in the the body, be very mindful of your movement (I will admit that my injury occurred from my overextending and not activating the muscles around this area mindfully), and practice stabilizing/grounding positions/poses to help build more awareness/stability in this area. Move slowly, be mindful, be aware and use whatever props you need to find stability and release. The idea in this practice is not for more flexibility but for some release and body awareness as well as stabilizing poses to practice when you need them. Always use your best judgment and practice self care!

    Thank you so much for explaining the difference for people who suffer for SI joint issues such as myself. You explain things that even my PT didn't tell me that was making me worse. I would suggest for us older gals, wear something a little lighter in color - hard to see how you had your legs with blue pants on purple mat and black shirt almost at the black mat - maybe a view from a different angle so we can see how your legs are a little better - I'll watch again and listen carefully to see if I can figure it out though. :) Thank you, God bless you. You really encouraged me saying you went 2 years without a flare up - I've been at this for over 6 yrs and it's all but ruined and depressed me - lots of docs don't understand SI issues - so they treat for EVERYthing else and I've been a guinea pig. I haven't gone more than a couple months in that time - determined to get here esp w your help! :)

      You are very welcome Jenni and I would definitely recommend you start a journal to track your flareups and even when you feel twinges of it coming on so you can start working on a plan for care. Sensing it early when it just starts to twinge can be super helpful in preventing a full flare up and taking special care of it. I wish you health and healing and have a great week! Peace, Aprille

    Omg Aprille, I never comment, like neeeeever!!! I’m not new to your channel. Last time my body was in absolute
    Inflammation I benefited from 2/3 of your classes. But this time around I am much more committed to really
    Listening to my body, and understanding what it needs. This is the first and only out of hundreds of Yoga videos
    Focusing on the lower back that has done anything to seriously and instantaneously relieve my hip/back pain..Like
    Literally after the second pose I was smiling, celebrating, and singing you’re praises out loud, that’s how much better
    My body felt. I suppose some of it has to do with you facing similar physical challenges, but really it’s the manner in
    Which your relay the knowledge and instruct that makes all of the difference. I am learning so much from your
    commentary alone, and I am not someone who is new to the yogi, wellness, alternative lifestyle game; I grew up in a
    Household embracing all those things, but you just have a way of saying things in a manner that really resonates..It’s your
    Superpower! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, your time, and yourself with the rest of us...So Grateful:)
    Thank you and much love your way:)

      Wow - well thank you SO much! I really appreciate your taking the time to comment and I am SO glad this practice helped you feel better. I know just how painful this area can be and how hard it can be to work with it in a way that is soothing but still keeps it open and comfortable. You are very, very welcome and I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Peace, Aprille

    Once again Aprille I have to show my appreciation for your teaching and practice. I have been challenged in my lower back and SI area for 3.5yrs. Yet it is this practice (along with recent challenges with my left hip) that I have come to learn that I have not been mindful with my poses, which in the past caused many flare ups and a fear of doing any physical activity. However, since finding you some 6 weeks now. I mostly do one of your videos everyday, which has helped in my recovery and keeps my mind positive. I have one more week at home and then I will be back to work (phased over 4 weeks). Albeit in the short term will have a walking aid for support, I will continue to follow your channel and update you on my progress. I really from the depth of my heart thank you for being apart of this phase of my life. Thank you so VERY much for your time and effort in preparing these videos for without them I don't know ........ from the UK I send you a massive cyber hug xXx

    Thank you so much for both the practice and your insightful comments. You reminded me that sometimes the yoga we do to ease or prevent pain can sometimes be the cause of it. Every January many online instructors offer a 30 day yoga “challenge “ which I have been sucked into in the past. Last year I had a severe shoulder pain as a result so this year I didn’t sign up. However, I still ended up following along no, but made sure not to do any planks as I think that was the problem before. However I have been very sore this week and now think it may be because I was repeating the same flow, which got more difficult each day. I’m so glad I found your videos, especially this one. I have ongoing dull pain in my left hip, but after this practice both hips feel much looser and walking seems freer. Thanks 🙏

    • @YogaRangerStudio
      @YogaRangerStudio  5 років тому +1

      You are very welcome Julie! I think we all don't want to admit it but any exercise or movement can cause injury and pain even if it is not meant to. Taking care, being body aware and listening to it's cues (even when they are whispered) can keep us healthy and better able to respond more quickly to it's needs. Take care of yourself first and rest (I think even yoga needs rest days) so your body can heal and rebuild. I hope you are feeling better and definitely take care of your shoulders (biggest injury in yoga). For overall soreness, you can try epsom salt in a hot bath and that often takes a lot of the sore feeling away and is VERY relaxing (and detoxifying for the body). Thank you for joining me and have a wonderful day! Peace, Aprille

    I feel so much physical relief after this practice. The way that you described the symptoms of an SI flareup makes me feel like this is exactly what is going on for me. I recently have been engaging in some more intermediate/advanced practice and I feel like maybe I am pushing it too far and this has caused some moderate/severe pain my my left hip and lower back area. After taking this class, I am walking around and sitting down with much less pain then I had before class. I will definitely save and repeat. Thank you for the helpful and gentle modifications and for making me feel better emotionally too.

      Hello Katie! I am so sorry to hear you are having some pain and I wish you healing and good health! I practiced Ashtanga and power yoga for years without any issues until I tried some modifications that didn't quite set right with my body (Trikonasana was NOT my friend for awhile). I think checking in and becoming aware of the poses that were causing more pain really helped as I could break them down, analyze what was happening and make modifications so I could incorporate them back into my practice. It took some time but I have been SI flare up free for almost 2 years. I feel it slipping and soreness and I immediately check in on my poses and practice and do some serious self care time : ) I am so glad to hear this practice helped and I am wishing you a pain free practice. It's really good that you have pinpointed the poses that are troublesome for you. Amazing! Thank you for these wonderful poses and tips. I have been having SI problems for over 2 years now - it honestly feels like the flare-ups are constant. I worked a labor-intensive overnight job at a store, with lots of heavy lifting, and I am pretty sure that was the main contributing factor to the injury. I have been trying various treatments, and the one that relieved me of pain the most thus far has been osteopathic treatments, though they only really seem to work for a day or two afterward, and the inflammation returns. I have noticed that some yoga poses do not work for me, and it makes sense that it is those when the pelvis is completely stationary. I tried your practice this morning and am feeling so much blood flow to the area and just overall ease. I'm going to pick up some of those supplements tonight. Thank you again - I'm in tears, of relief.

      Unfortunately, most of what I have read doesn't really understand this issue fully and doctors don't acknowledge it much. Simone, back pain can come from SO many things and this is just one of the many (probably one that most people aren't aware of). It's a dull ache on one side that is consistent and persistent and often comes from overuse or overextension and essentially is an injury. Having had this for a few years, I have learned to allow it to heal and I know many of my triggers so I can avoid the flareups. Flareups often last up to 3 months though so it's an area to watch...especially for female yogis. Thank you for joining me today and have a lovely day! Peace, Aprille

      While I always caution people to rest and allow the SI to recover some, you could always try this and see how it feels for you. None of these poses should inflame it more and this practice was intended to be used while recovering and to bring more awareness to the area so you can prevent flareups eventually. Use lots of props and if it hurts, come out of the pose...it might be too soon for you to work with this area. I use it when the pain has reduced some and I feel ready. Enjoy and I hope you feel better soon! Peace, Aprille

I had an incident about 4 weeks ago after doing too much physically I think overexertion but again haven t been to any doctor or anything, I been home a lot lately as have many people these days so Im doing this and that lifting things that I shouldnt have;, etc., etc., one day I started feeling this HARD spasm around lower back/waist area and then BAM I practically collapsed and I could not stand up for about an hour . Any how I have improved since then but still feel achy , tight, lower back and hip joint....soooo trying this practice. Thanks you also for the extra tips about yoga postures, supplements, even what you mentioned about hormones cuz I'm about 2 years into "menopause" as well, :).

      You are so welcome and I wish you the very best in your recovery! While I think this practice can help, I would not suggest doing any single practice 2x a day but more like 2x a week while using other practices or activities to work the muscles and overall body. Please rest lots and check in with yourself often to see if you feel any sensation and adjust your practice to fit what you need today. I do also offer a lot of Restorative Yoga that can help with the healing process as well as manage stress and our crazy lives these days. Take care - Peace, Aprille

    Thanks for this. Just wanted to add that turmeric, ginger and black pepper can be added to a hot cup of diluted milk, in India it's quite a usual thing. Just keep in mind to boil the ginger and add turmeric and pepper after the flames are off. :)

      Exactly and I often drink this "golden milk" myself for inflammation or whenever I feel I need a little boost. It tastes amazing and I like to add a bit of cinnamon as well. Perfect for colder weather but great anytime of year.

    Hi Aprille, I found this practice to help with SI joint Inflammation just before my period, my joints feel like they are Inflammed, about to explode 3-4 days before. All your practices are amazingly soothing and refreshing.
    Can you do a video for a combo of PMS and SI Joint etc?
    Much Love, from South Africa ♥️ 🇿🇦

      Hello Candice! I am so glad you found this practice helpful and it's a great one to use whenever your SI flares up or you feel it coming on (or even to help care for it and prevent flareups). Have you tried this practice? ua-cam.com/video/ycalGqsFoXE/v-deo.html
      This is meant for PMS/PMT specifically to deal with the digestive, back ache, mood swings that go with it. Another suggestion is to use a acupressure mat which I find helps immensely. The gentle pressure with the little tines helps release tension in the space and relax me which in turn helps with pain/discomfort. It can be used for all areas of the body. Here are a few tips on usage: ua-cam.com/video/Z3fYG2L4YiQ/v-deo.html
      Thanks and have a great day! Peace, Aprille

      @@YogaRangerStudio Thank You Aprille!! Sorry I only saw your reply now 😔 I'm going to share the video with my cousin who also battles with SI joint and PMS issues. I've also recently been for an operation which found my Iron and Potassium levels were extremely low, Anemic on the iron side actually, so the constant aches and pains have now made sense too. Minerals are so vital to us all!
      I bought the Accupressure mat about 3 months ago because I saw your Video tutorial on how to use it 😊
      My cousin and I are going to be doing your Yoga classes together (seperatly in our own homes, at a daily time that suits us both) as part of self isolation/quarantining going on, and still keeping with our routines! Thank you again for you calm, comforting and wonderful knowledge and guidance you offer throughout your practices 💞🤗

      Agreed Helen and that's one of the biggest issues - lack of education and awareness of this key area and joint issues here. I hope this practice helped and thank you for joining me today! Peace, Aprille

    Hi thank you! Do you specific yoga poses to avoid when having si joint issues? I find frog pose makes it worse. I now realise not all yoga poses are good some make my si issues flare up for days.

    • @YogaRangerStudio
      @YogaRangerStudio  3 роки тому

      Hello! This depends on each person but there are a few that "tend" to make SI issues flare up. Revolved Head to Knee Pose is probably the one many people struggle with as it involves seated, forward folding AND a twist. I did find this one made mine worse as well as triangle pose so I took a break from both and then began rebuilding those poses from the ground up to fit MY BODY instead of all the cues I had heard over the years. It took a year or so to work my way back into these poses but now - they don't bother my SI at all. If Frog is one that irritates yours, try thinking of what you can adjust to make that pose work better for you. Maybe it's using a bolster underneath for support so you don't go as deep, maybe it's rocking forward or back slightly, maybe it's coming into a wide kneed child's pose with feet turned out or just a super wide kneed child's pose. Find YOUR pose and experiment with what feels best for you in your practice. And, while you have a flareup or discomfort/pain, avoid the poses that seem to irritate for at least a week or two until you are pain/discomfort free. I think it's great you have already identified the pose that bothers yours! Good first step in caring for your SI. Thanks for reaching out and for practicing with me and have a wonderful week (let me know if you have any other questions). Peace, Aprille

    Aprille, what is the name of the supplement you recommend in this practice?

    • @YogaRangerStudio
      @YogaRangerStudio  4 роки тому +3

      Curcumin supplement. It's the active ingredient in turmeric often (and should be) melded with ginger and black pepper (pepper makes turmeric more bioavailable).
