If i could change one thing after 5-6 years of owning a pond it would be to have the edges of my pond perfectly levelled, and concealed with some gorgeous stone like you do. Cheers Eric thanks for the video! Its great to roll up a joint and just learn from your experience having dug so many pond. Full respect to you
When patching a liner leak, what process do you recommend using to clean existing liner and prepping to patch. Also, are there patching materials, methods you find to work ?
Eric, what is your opinion about pressure relief valves and adding them to pond liners to keep the liner from floating? We bought a house in MN with a large shallow pond (about 10,000 gallons). The pond was built on the lowest and soggiest part of the lot. We are bordered by a wetland, so our water table is really high, causing the liner in the pond to float in a couple places. I think french drains and sump pumps are not an option for us given the location of the pond and the height of the water table. Just wondering if you had any experience and opinions regarding these valves.
I don't have a lot of experience with pressure relief valves however I can tell you that they can be jammed up with sand and debris and then you're really in trouble, especially on a 10,000 gallon pond. I would consider using pressure relief valves on ponds great than one acre and 10 deep or so in order to have good back pressure to shut them off when necessary.
Thanks for the video Eric, you inspired me to build my dream pond in Jersey, Channel Islands after watching your UA-cam tutorial. I have had a problem with rodents eating through the liner so am now putting a 75mm ring of concrete around the pond, between the soil, white matting and pond liner and extending the concrete down to the concrete perimeter kerb that the kerb stones sit on. In hindsight, this would have been easier to do at the time of constructing the pond and I hope that this will deter them from burrowing around the pond edge.
I have a really small pond that has a leak in the liner inside the pond somewhere. The water leaks out at a steady pace over 3 or 4 hours, but not fast enough for me to tell where it's leaking from. I have permanent cement and rock work on the outside of the liner. I prefer not to have to tear out all the permanent cement and rock work just to find the leak. Is there some type of chemical or a good way I can pinpoint the area of the leak so I can just tear out that area and repair the liner behind it?
Have you tried the dye test where you can watch where the dye (or food coloring) goes? It sounds like you have a prob similar to ours. We actually have a mortared pond with a skimmer and pump that we swim in. We were losing about 2 inches per day so we had to find the week first. We knew it was a liner leak underneath the mortar so we just had to locate it. So come to find out, we have a few tears around the main drain. The way we located the leak before the repairman fixed the leaks, is we used red dye and squirted it around any crack or crevice that we thought might be the culprit. We eventually isolated it to an area around the main drain. To do the dye test You May need enough water pressure, unless it’s a really big hole, to push the dye through. I’m not sure how deep that needs to be. Maybe a couple of feet? With our pool full, I did several scuba mask dives (with my husband holding me down) to do my dye test. We also hired a leak detection company to locate the leak once we found the general area. They require that the pool/pond be full before they do their leak testing. So, as we speak, the guy who installed our swimmable pond, which has the liner underneath the mortar, is out working on the repair. The tricky part was removing the mortar without damaging the liner underneath. There are several small tears so now he is working on a solution to patching those tears. It’s going to be a little tricky because The liner is a bit wrinkled as it comes up to the main drain. Anyway, best of luck to you and I hope this helps. I’m just a grandma who has research time on her hands, so take my advice for what it’s worth. Lol.
I used to watch you for inspiration years ago. Then promptly forgot.... until i google search on this topic found you again lol. So good at what you do!
Hey Eric , just purchased the aquascape kit . The 1st thing was liner had 3 holes in it right out of the box . They did replace it quickly. What I don’t like is the way you to silicone the skimmer then apply the liner to that then cut the hole and then try getting everything aligned and poking your holes for the screws to go thru. I think wouldn’t be easier to use a butterfly gasket to seal the square hole on the skimmer just like a pool . I’m having a problem with mine water level drops to the same level every time redone the skimmer ( nightmare) still the same . I’m going to look at my waterfall as well , but the level drops about an inch an hr with the pump off . I’m thinking it’s somewhere around the perimeter of the pond . Thanks for the video.
Hi Eric, I been watching your videos for a long time now. I'm in the process of building my own pond now. I was interested of purchasing your helix pond skimmer from what I seen in your videos. I live in Rio Rancho NM, a few weekends ago I was visiting my hometown of Santa Fe NM and I walked into Oasis Aquatic Services owned by an old friend of mine Michael Northway. I was blown away from the first thing I saw in his store, your Helix pond skimmer! I was so excited seeing your skimmer I didn't recognize Michael when he walked out of his office. As I turn around and saw Michael walking towards me I said you know the PondDigger! We talked and had a great time talking about you, your skimmer, and your videos. It was an easy sale for Michael when a customer walks in knowing everything about the Helix pond skimmer. Thank you Eric for all your videos..
b291k That sounds a lot. But in Hot Windy Deserts like Palm Springs 2" in a day is not uncommon in the dead heat of summer when it's 115 degrees and blowing like crazy. Here is a video we did on trouble shooting leaks that might help - ua-cam.com/video/4lWNpMxEp-o/v-deo.html
I recently installed a new helix pond skimmer with a Alpine PAL5200 5200GPH Cyclone Pump with check valve assembly. I am experiencing water loss when running the pump and once every 2 min. a couple large bubbles will come up from under the skimmer basket. Could this be a plumbing issue inside the skimmer?
I have a leak in my black infinity pond liner and need to find where it is? can't seem to find it anywhere :( andy suggestions please? desperate seems to go down to about half full!
My pond is leaking water I turned of water fall and still loosing water. It drops about 1/2" a day. Only thing that I can think of is I had a koi fish fountain and on the mouth were the water comes out is made of copper kinda has sharp edge on the lip of the 1/4" pipe I think when it fell in it could have punctured a hole. If I replace the liner would it be ok to put new liner on top of the old one after I clean the old one?
I just cleaned my pond out held water for a few days and water leval dropped 3 or 4 inches over night. filled it back up and did the same . it will hold water for a couple days and drop over night . have any suggestions. thanks Rick
+Rick Harper Check the faceplate seals on the waterfalls and skimmers. If the hardware is corroded on the skimmer you will frequently notice the failure right after a clean out.
Hello I am looking for help with my water garden. I have a leak of some sort and can’t find it. I have checked everything out and I have shut off for 24 hours with no water loss. Once the falls is on I loose about a foot or more of water
I have a koi pond and we glues the waterfall 3 minths ago and now our skimmer box is empty in about 10 hrs. What woukd be the cause and when I shut the lump off should there still be water in the fall area where the water pumps up through?
Hi, I have a PVC foil pond 7 cubic meters with Koi's. Now I can fill the pond every 2 weeks, because it is then 1/3 empty. I have no plants in it. I did, however, carefully suck the leaves away with a hydrogen vacuum. How can I detect the leak. I can of course drain it until the water level stops, but that would then be too little water for the fish are . Hopefully you have a solution.Vr gr
I have a raised pond. My 1st liner had lots of holes in it from the rocks not being carefully installed. We purchased a 2nd liner. We carefully placed that liner and also placed the damaged liner on top of it for extra protection. We’re losing 3 inches of water in less than 24 hours. All of the plumbing is working properly without leaks. We notice the ground is wet in front of the pond and on the side of the pond. Does this mean we have holes in the new liner? We have a tetra liner and this is a brand new pond install.
Hard to say but I would say you might have a low edge somewhere below what you belive is your optimum water level Keep me posted by shooting me a DM on instagram. @theponddigger
When you say the waterfall filter should be holding water, do you mean it has to be filled to the brim? I've determined there's a leak in my brand new pond and it drains about 5 inches of water in 12 hours. The waterfall filter is holding water but only up to where the filter media is placed. This all being said, I haven't foamed in the waterfall yet in fear of locking the leak in place. I've searched along the current waterline and I can't find any leaks. Since it's draining so much, I doubt the leak is too small to notice. What is your advice on where I should go from here?
Don't know if my previous comment was actually sent so forgive me if this is a repeat. Should the tub at the top of the waterfall stay full if I turn off the pump?
My pond is 100ft long with a L shape of 50 ft long about 3 ft deep in the middle and 10 ft deep at each end. My pond looses 1/2 inch water over night is this a hole or evaporation?
I have a 7x7 round pond. i turned off the water fall for the winter. the water levels have continued to drop. Should i wait till the water levels drop to the point of the leak? I have air diffusers. What if the leak is at the bottom?
Eric, Thanks for your great videos. We Watched a ton of videos Then tackled a 200' creek/waterfalls(5)/3 pond project with a 40' elevation drop in a draw on our property. I thought bigger rocks would look better so we set 40 - 5 ton boulders plus a variety of smaller rock and gravel. That was 8 months ago. It looks great a functions pretty well, but we have some leaks and silt problems. Access is difficult for equipment that can lift those big boulders. so I dont know how to check the edges for breaches. Any ideas?
If I could change one thing about my pond, it would be to have a bog filter. We bought a house with a Koi pond and a waterfall. It’s wonderful, but there’s not a good space above the waterfall to easily put in a bog filter and I think it would be so cool to have natural filtration with bog plants.
Question.... My pond is around 10 years old. I planted my lily pads in pea gravel on the bottom of the pond. How likely is it for the lily roots to grow through the liner creating a leak or is that possible. I used the heavy 45 mil liner. I started losing water all of sudden last summer. Response would be appreciated. Your thoughts???? Thank you...
Hello I need your help can you help? I am having a problem here in england it rains alot and recently we have had floods. I have been building a pond 3 feet deep 6 feet long 3 feet wide. I have major problems and need help. I dug down through alot of clay and did this to make the pond level with the retaining wall that holds the soil in like a retaining wall. I wanted to make the pond level with the wall you see. I put down some concrete slab reinforced with reebar then used breeze blocks and rendered them but decided on using a rubber liner. The problem I am having is water is penetrating the concrete floor I put down more concrete on top to try to level the floor better but I am getting water coming into the pond some of the water looks like a rainbow with colors like you get when oil mixes with water and dont think this is any good the pond advisor says i need drainage well not sure what he means or how i would resolve my problem is their any advise you would give. its hard to write don whats going on perhaps sending a photo would help you understand. Could you please tell me how to resolve this i keep emptying the pond but this problem wont go away and if I put a liner in what would happen would the water underneath push the liner up?and this might not be a good thing for fish I imagine . Please advise thanks
I was returning some potted lily pads back in our pond and while leaning over the edge I accidentally knocked one or two of the veneer stone that we lined the pond with and the pond has been leaking since. I need to know how to locate that leak in our Firestone rubber liner. Our pond is 450 gallons and I'm wondering if there's a way to locate the leak without completely draining the entire pond
We just installed a large pond liner with nothing like plumbing installed yet and it appears we have a leak. Nothing is leaking around the perimeter so it has to be a hole in the liner. How do find a hole? The pond is 50x30 feet with a deep area in the middle 7x30 feet 3 to 5 foot deep. Hope you can help!
Good tips here for sure. I am still on the build of my pond and I plan to do a cement form bottom. So how about this question, What should I be doing or what special things do I need to make sure I do before I pour in the spring? Also, what additives do you use in the cement to make sure it is waterproof? I guess anything related specifically to cement ponds. Thanks.
I do not have a pond but I have a stream that falls in to a holding tank, this is 31 feet from start to pump, this is where my pump is, I know from the holding tank doesn't lose water, in the stream there is a bight point in the middle so when the pump is off the water goes to the left and right, the holding tank in on the right of this high point. The is where I'm losing water, the water will drain here, but stay in the holding tank.. my liner is laid into the holding tank.. is it possible the when the water is running it makes a vacuum between the holding tank and the liner so the water is being taking back up?
How can I find a a leak in the liner? I did everything you said but I have a new liner just installed over a old line (14 years old know with a tear in it.) I left it and install brand new liner. Still losing 4-6” in 24 hrs.
After I watched the video I'm thinking my pond is loosing water at the water falls, however I'm loosing a lots of water after the pump is shot off, and it's a large pond 10x24, I recently moved into this place and the pond is 20+ years old , it does have a relatively newer looking sand filter Hayward S244T, submerged pump. Can you please give me some ideas I know nothing about ponds. Thanks
Frustrated to tears. Built a pond roughly 25x30 feet… it leaked. Did a ton of work fixing the leak or what we thought was a leak… replaced the rock. It had some water in it. Paid to have the pond partially filled (6000 gallons). It leaked out around 3000 gallons overnight!! 😰 I was sooo disappointed. We looked on the ground for a soggy area or wet spot- nothing. It has taken me two years to place the rock. We’ve removed rock and replaced it, and removed and replaced during this third year. Is there any other way to find a the leak and or fix it without taking the rock off? Would spray foam between every rock work? So frustrated. 😭
I'm experiencing a leak in my pond I'm actually an amateur to the fish pond scene ( like this summer)I took on a small fish pond that was already built before I moved into the house I knew absolutely nothing about it so it was definitely trial and error for me and I've feel like I've done well now I have ran.into the problem of a hole somewhere in the liner I've tried milk its just too hard for me to see it that way due to I have had some health issues that has caused me double vision now in my left eye I really don't want to have to replace the whole liner because for one they aren't very cheap and for two that's a lot of moving big heavy things and with my vision it's just not safe for me to do that anymore and I don't have any help so is there a simple way for me to figure this out
We just put in a new pond and it’s not even up and running yet but it is leaking water drastically we have went over the pond on our hands and knees looking at every little detail no cuts no tears in the main pond what could it be ?
Thanks for video. Have a leak. Gonna go find and fix it. IF I had one thing to change about my pond.... it'd be to add one more 55 gallon drum for bio-filtration. I am considering revamping my stream and waterfall, entirely too make it more user friendly and trouble shootable.
I would change my pump for my pond. And by watching your video, I think that my leak is in the waterfall tub where you clean those filter liners that are stacked on top of each other. So how would I patch it from leaking? What glue do I use?
Hey dude, good video and thanks for sharing. I suspect a leak in my pond lining. However, in order to rule out the pump and plumbing system, is it ok to switch the pump off for about 24hrs to check if the water level drops? I have approx a 2,000 liter pond with about 10 goldfish in it. Cheers!
I found a leak in my pond and it's in the seam where they put 2 liners together. It's right before the stream meets the pond. Problem Is pond is 10 years old and if I remove the seam patch there's a lot of wrinkles and to get a new seam patch would be super hard to get a good seal. Seam is 6ft long. What do I do?
Hi eric, we installed a pond last year,11×12 or so,it was towards September and completely DIy using one of the kits from Amazon. We lined the walls heavily with stones, however I didn't put stones in the bottom cause I read somewhere that it creates all kinds of algae etc.the pond did great until the snow where I shut the waterfall. Late December I noticed the liner in the middle where there were no stones rose up,like it was filled with air below. After few days it went down again. Followed this pattern over winter. After winter I filled the pond and realized its leaking.drained it looked for holes, didn't see anything. Put heavy stones at the bottom so liner doesnt rise.refilled the pond.still leaking:( any thoughts?
Thanks for the information. I used a 35 gallon trash can with home made plumbing and media for filtration. In retrospect I would have installed a bigger drain and a more robust container.
Hi Eric. I’ve built an 8x11 pond following your videos. Thanks for the great work. I haven’t filled the pond up with water yet and it rained heavily in Clovis, CA the last few days. A huge bubble formed at the bottom of the pond. Is it because I didn’t have it filled up or should I look at something else? Thanks!
Hi, I've gone through your hit list. I think it's the seal between my diy wetlands filter and the EPDM liner. I attached the liner by making a stainless faceplate. I attached that with stainless nuts and bolts. Generous silicone was used. That area seams to be leaking. I'm planning on rebuilding soon with professional parts. Until then, and seam tape that will bond to IBC container, EPDM, and stainless?
I baught my house with the pond so I have no idea how old it is. But I have a leak and my skimmer hardware is very corroded so I'm going to assume it's that. How do I know what face plate to order?
I had a leak in a raise pond, could see water coming from the top side. Lucky enough it was only a couple of inches from the top. Few days later i topped it up to try find the leak and now it doesn't leak, weird ^^
Thanks for the tips! I know my pond is leaking some from the waterfall unit, because when i adjust the liner, the water level changes. But, I never thought of plants. I have a lot of grass that grew in the stream. I let it go, because it looks natural, but it might have made a dam..... Thanks!
If I could change only one thing about the pond in the backyard of our new home, I would make the skimmer easier to maintain. The skimmer appears to be old, 15 - 20 years old. Leaves collect in a front removable basket and also flow into the k section where the submersible pump and a filter pad are. The filter pad is along the back of the skimmer wall, not over the submerged pump, so leaves and debris must be manually removed from around the pump in the 2 foot deep skimmer at least once a week, but more often depending on debris.
I would make the stream between my waterfall and the pond deeper, so i could make cascades, and pools for birds to bathe. At present, the stream is just a boring straight line with a slope. If I try move the rocks to create pools, the water goes over the sides of the liner.
I represent an HOA with two lagoons, both about 35,000 and 45,000 gallons. For 40 years the 35k worked mostly okay but then lost a little water. We hired a contractor to completely redo the pond, all 3 levels, new mortar and coated with Sika 107. It took several months but when they finished it looked great. Unfortunately the lower level ( of the 3 levels ) drops about 10" in a week which is a faster leak than it's ever had. We've been trying to get them to come back out here for months to fix it and quite honestly they don't care. We tried hiring a leak detection specialist but he ended up trying to sell us on spending $100k to redo the pond again. ( No. Hell no. ) We just need to find a leak. I was hoping your video would tell me how to find the leak, meaning is there a dye you put into the water? Some kind of dye that seeps in the direction of a leak ( stillwater, no pumps ) and reveals a general idea about where all the water is going?
I was wondering if someone could help, I have a pond and when I had the pump on to my water fall the hose was disconnected and a whole load of water was lost. I refilled the pond and left the pump off but over night the water line returned to the same level. I was surprised as I thought there was no liner leak. but the level is stable but I cant find and hole.
My pond is 7x16 and 3.5 deep with creek and 2 falls. Loosing water now like crazy! 8ys old atleast .. Gona start with removing lillypads and weeds in stream then see what happens..
I have a 10 by 12 Koi pond that I can not find the leak in, it is loosing several inches every day, I can not see anything visually, This pond has been in the ground for 4 yrs without a drop of trouble, why cant I find this leak!!!!!!!! UGHH so frustrated
Next video you do will have to be for people moving from old house to a new house and moving there fish and how to do it safely .It seems to be a question that is coming up on the garden pond forum sight a lot lately .
I must tell at least 1 person a week how to do it and then the discussion on it keeps going .Plus what to do if your selling a how ,pond stays or pond goes .I tell them ask there real estate agent .
or in my case moles chewed liner .New liner because I had made the pond bigger 3 years before and went bigger and of course went bigger last year after the mole attack. One thing I would change is no koi .I wish someone had told me how big and how they destroy plants .I still love them though .My Aggie and Bert are special to me
We just build a new pond, and we think we have a leak in the water fall but we can't find anything wet near the fall. So my question is do we need to tear down the water fall to find leak
Hi, seen one of you videos. I have a creek pond. Been fixing hoes and Tate's. Finally thought I fixed the creek area. I'm getting closer. Ran water down the creek let it run the rest of the nite. With 4-5 hours my water still dropped 2-3 inches.there is fold within the creek since I have curves that go down. I guess I searching just a little more better now.. Nothing I would change except that it would run right.
3 ft by 40 ft long side on one side by a patio and then the two ends and the other side or a wall on a sidewalk on one end of the pond it's leaking into the soil I was going to dig a trench down on that and see where is coming out at exactly and then I was going to look at the plans for the building see if there's any piping right there and then I was going to drain the pond out get all the crawdads in the small fish that are left take some of the pond water and put them in that I pressure clean it and then seal it with that stuff if it's big holes and stuff it's loose or something like that they're going to have to get a hold of their landlord have a guy come out its license and redo it but I'm going to check it all out first maybe it's just a seal that's all it needs I heard a stuff that you can get where you can mix it with water and you put it on like putty expands into the cracks . First before I put the sealer on there I think I'm doing all this correctly like I said big stones are loose that are compromised you're going to have to get somebody out with like I said with the license and do it correctly
Hey quick question, I tried to raise my pond level by adding two feet of dirt under the extra liner. I think I stretched the old liner too much and there seems to be a leak. However I have looked around and cannot locate it, I do not have a skimmer so that is not a problem any suggestions? PS: thank you I am one of your OG subs we love your content keep it up!!!
Before I continue what's up Cowboy great opening song , also you have a leak we're going to get to the bottom of it classic nice skater on the wall there too by the way
My water drops to about 2/3 inches and there are no other factors other than my liner. I just can't see a leak that would drop thr water 6/8 inches overnight
Currently have a 10 gallon per hour leak in a 3500 gallon pond and yes I have a small hole in my liner that I would like to find...I’ve been waiting for the water level to drop to a point at which it stops on its own and I can search the waters edge but I feel the leak is on bottom. My pond is only five years old... and I am about to rebuild my entire set up… If I could change one thing it would be to use concrete instead of a liner!!! Please let me know if you know anybody in the North Georgia Dawsonville area, that I could trust to rebuild my pond... I haven’t slept in a week... I have to relocate 75 fish into a temporary structure in my garage... and many of them are over 18 inches... but I’m gonna take a deep breath now and just make all this happen!
I love my pond but recently I have had a lot of problems with leaks. I found that the Alexander Palm trees I planted around my pond had roots growing into the liner. In all I found 11 holes in the liner, but because they had roots in them the leaking was not as fast as you would think individually but together it was a lot of water loss. If I had to change anything I would definitely not put trees for shade that have extensive root systems anywhere near my pond. The shade is nice for the fish but the work it took to find and fix the holes was exhausting. I liked your video because yesterday I finally finished patching and putting the the pond back together in 95 degree weather and this morning found that the water leaked right to the level of the skimmer. I was so disappointed because I thought I had missed a leak. I'm going to take apart and reseal the skimmer once water levels out and hopefully this will finalize my repair job. Thanks for the advice.
#AskThePondDigger If there was one thing I could change it would have to be the depth. Digging the pond I found an old septic tank and a drainage tile network. This changed my design with 3/4 being 3-4 ft and the other 1/4 about 1-1/2 ft. I must be related to your koi pond video friend who wants you to already expand her new pond 😀I'm not even finished with mine and I want it bigger. 24x18 now .
Musabe009 PondAholic!!! Everyone always wishes they went deeper. Especially when they walk up to a deep pond!! At least Rosemary is satisfied with the 5' depth!
I was getting yakked from two rooms and this was going long and not helping, I put it on pause and went outside, I went around the pond scoping out return and exit fittings. i noticed a weird shadow in one of the exits and reached down, not sure how it happened but the fitting that compresses the liner between the outer pipe lip and the other side had come undone. I was loosing water from that fitting . repaired that , added a gasket to make sure, filled it up and then went around the front of the house and a delivery driver for a pretty fancy restaurant honked at me, rolled the window down and asked if I ate dinner yet. I said No? Kind in a question form, he said He just had a lady cancel an order and it would be free, he didn't like salmon! Ha! what a lucky day. LOL If i would have spent one more second watching this I would not have got grilled salmon Fettuccine for free. :0)
Considering that my pond is not complete yet, I would change the price of building a good, long-lasting pond! lol! Hmm... Perhaps $50 per yard for your pond? That would work just fine for me!
Dietmar Quistorf We need to try the coyote urine!!! And we still need to build that cover for the fish section. If they are rooting around in the plants we might need a hot wire!
+@@ThePondDigger, by adding 2-5 parts per thousand 'API pond salt' I defeated several raccoons who regularly visit from nearby Liberty State Park, NJ. I also have a strong net attached to pressure treated 4X4's surrounding my pond. As i struggle to find my leak, I am seriously considering installing an extra liner, inside the current leaking liner, by attaching the new liner to the inside 4x4's with half round pressure treated wood. Thank you so very much for your excellent videos and advice!
HELP!!!! One of my koi was acting weird so I pulled him out of the pond and put him in a sepreat pond. Later i found out that he had a hole in the side of his face were you could see inside his mouth, what should I do !!!!!!
Our pons is approximately six years old. I the last year we added a stream that flows downhill to a small pond that has a skimmer basket and recycles back up to the larger pond with a waterfall at the top. For the whole past six years we have not noticed water usage as being a problem. But when we had the stream built, all of a sudden the auto filler was running almost all the time. Our water bill doubled so we assumed gotta be the steam yeah? So we hired a contracter to come rebuild the stream, one piece of high quality liner from old pond where the water spills into the stream to the small pond and another new liner for the small pond up to the skimmer. Small pond water level holds steady with no outrageos leaking although water usage has been high from stream build day one all of a sudden the water filler couldn't keep up and the pump runs almost dry after about two to four hours. we have no plants in the large pond or stream and only a few in the small pond. I guess my one thing i would want to change would be for my beautiful pond stream to stop using so much water. Large (old) pond level does go down about two inches if water motor is off over night which we have had to do because of water loss. Sorry this is so long but you said to be specific 😕
I have a very slow leak I isolated it to the pond losing about 30 gallons a day a very slow leak for a 3000 gallon pond so my question is how long will the koi be ok with no filtration. I have an aerated drain giving them air and have stopped feeding them but I worried about how long it will take for the water level to drop down to the leak . I'll see if I can post a link so you can see what the pond looks like ua-cam.com/video/TfOKYYewKBA/v-deo.html I would appreciate your help thank you
If you're leak is slow, an inch or two per day, and you have no fish; then get small animal float drinking bowl and bore some holes in it. Stick it in the pond with a permanent all season hose attached and forget all about leaks.
5” a day or more varying on temperature. The ground is highly saturated with water on the downside. I ended up buying another line and more underlayment. This time I am not building rocks up the inside wall, only pond stone on the bottom.
@@djphranque143I ripped out my old liner, filled the whole area with carpet, double lined my pond so that nothing was sitting on top of the actual sealant liner. My ponds are full of rocks bottom and sides. Was fine for two years then it started to leak an inch per day, at that point I decided I was going through that all again so I just stuck in float drinking bowl, you don't even see it. My water remains at the same level now, no matter what the season. I have three outdoor tap connections so I can forget the fact that there is hose permanently connected to one of them. You lose 5 inches per day though, that's a different proposition and just too much water to fill each day. I don't think I would put any rocks in at all, I would just fill the pond with so many plants that you cannot see the liner.
If i could change one thing after 5-6 years of owning a pond it would be to have the edges of my pond perfectly levelled, and concealed with some gorgeous stone like you do. Cheers Eric thanks for the video! Its great to roll up a joint and just learn from your experience having dug so many pond. Full respect to you
Thank You! First straightforward video on the topic I found. Super helpful for a total beginner!
Much Thanks! Be sure to watch for our podcast episodes! No Nonsense Content.
Be good if you'd gotten an answer
How much water loss would you expect from evaporation? My pond looses 5 inches a week and has quite a bit of shallow stream.
b291k That sounds a lot.
I have a leak in my black infinity pond liner and need to find where it is? can't seem to find it anywhere :( andy suggestions please? desperate seems to go down to about half full!
email me directly. eric@theponddigger.com
tell me where you are located so I can try and connect you with a local contractor to help!
I live in St Brelade Jersey ci :)
wow that is so huge pond for the fish . did you build it for expo or selling fish ?
jusr built a brabd new pond nothing is running and i have a leak in a 40x70 pond. With Massive boulders. What should I do????
Hello
I am looking for help with my water garden.
Natalie Lucas can you email or text me a 60 second video of your situation? email me a contact number I can call you on. eric@theponddigger.com
Eric,
Thanks for your great videos.
Should the water in the tub at the top of the waterfall stay full if I turn off the water source?
I was returning some potted lily pads back in our pond and while leaning over the edge I accidentally knocked one or two of the veneer stone that we lined the pond with and the pond has been leaking since. I need to know how to locate that leak in our Firestone rubber liner. Our pond is 450 gallons and I'm wondering if there's a way to locate the leak without completely draining the entire pond
You fixed my pond!! THANK YOU!!!
Thanks.
Matthew Triplat Great question. Since you are pouring in the spring we should be able to cover this question in one of the shows.
That is awesome!!!! Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing it.
Hi There. What would the steps be finding a leak in a concrete pond that uses a cement base waterproofing?
Very easy to seal? What if the hole is a tear where a pipe boot leaves the pond. The liner in question is not rubber and is near to creases.
Try flex seal
I had a leak in a raise pond, could see water coming from the top side. Lucky enough it was only a couple of inches from the top. Few days later i topped it up to try find the leak and now it doesn't leak, weird ^^
Can a fold in a PE liner crease and crack and cause a leak?
Thanks for the tips! I know my pond is leaking some from the waterfall unit, because when i adjust the liner, the water level changes. But, I never thought of plants. I have a lot of grass that grew in the stream. I let it go, because it looks natural, but it might have made a dam..... Thanks!
Hi Eric love your videos...what do you think about bakki shower filters? thanks Ross
I think shower filters are great!
Representing so-cal ponds! Nice!
Matt Clark Boom!
ThePondDigger thank you
pond liner stream plaster ,small uper pond plaster all new ,akk pro materials ,leakin lower big pond?
I would make the stream between my waterfall and the pond deeper, so i could make cascades, and pools for birds to bathe. At present, the stream is just a boring straight line with a slope. If I try move the rocks to create pools, the water goes over the sides of the liner.
I got a fish pond with a waterfall on a hill but I turn on the waterfall but it does not pump water
I have a pond that keeps leaking we tried patching it two many times we need help we don't want to loose our fish can you help
I’m a big fan of light and water. If I get a chance to build my own, I will add good lighting and falls with bigger better looking pond.
What do I do if I had to put two liners together and now the seam is leaking??
Eric how to locate leak on clay bottom pond..
I have a 10 by 12 Koi pond that I can not find the leak in, it is loosing several inches every day, I can not see anything visually, This pond has been in the ground for 4 yrs without a drop of trouble, why cant I find this leak!!!!!!!! UGHH so frustrated
Same problem right now
+Ky0l I found my leak, was as simple as checking the waterfall, was a very easy fix, I just had to adjust my hose.
Nice!

Next video you do will have to be for people moving from old house to a new house and moving there fish and how to do it safely .It seems to be a question that is coming up on the garden pond forum sight a lot lately .
sissy murphy Great question!!
I must tell at least 1 person a week how to do it and then the discussion on it keeps going .Plus what to do if your selling a how ,pond stays or pond goes .I tell them ask there real estate agent .
good info
or in my case moles chewed liner .New liner because I had made the pond bigger 3 years before and went bigger and of course went bigger last year after the mole attack.
Nothing I would change except that it would run right.
darlene dean Stay focused and try and enjoy the journey even through this tough learning curve
Maybe flex seal, what did you end up doing?
Before I continue what's up Cowboy great opening song , also you have a leak we're going to get to the bottom of it classic nice skater on the wall there too by the way
mine has dropped about a ft.. and now its raining like a bleeding monsoon.. sigh..
I would have made my pond wider, because I didn't account for the space the boulders take up.
i have a pond leaking into my pond not out of the pond
I would have focused much more on the waterfall making more levels.
TORE ANDERSSON Good to know!
She has a nice pond, she seems like a very nice lady. Im already thinking of future design ideas to expand. Lols I don't think it will ever end.
My pond has a leak somewhere in the liner... I know this cannot find it - this video didn't tell me anythin I didn't already know
I was getting yakked from two rooms and this was going long and not helping, I put it on pause and went outside, I went around the pond scoping out return and exit fittings. i noticed a weird shadow in one of the exits and reached down, not sure how it happened but the fitting that compresses the liner between the outer pipe lip and the other side had come undone.
If I had known more about bottom drains I would have installed one the first time instead of waiting several years down the road
Considering that my pond is not complete yet, I would change the price of building a good, long-lasting pond! lol! Hmm... Perhaps $50 per yard for your pond? That would work just fine for me!
+Leslie Kite You are binge watching The Pond Digger Videos! Makes me smile!
+ThePondDigger She's not the only binge watcher. I have learned if I go to 32second mark I can speed this up though. ;)
we build tons of ponds in Alabama. It's so humid you just let it leak hahaha
How can I stop these darn raccoons from destroying my patio pond? They just payed me a visit yesterday.

Yeah I'm going to save your channel I'm going to build a pond build a house I'm on a three-year plan with that one
The contractor that installed it!

I'll see if I can post a link so you can see what the pond looks like

Still losing water after finding 2 spots
