Just makes you wonder how the expensive fish manage to survive in their muddy silt ponds in the Japanese hills. I bet they dont fiddle with their water quality all the time. Maybe the fault is all ours because we strive to have crystal waters. Heyho PS love your videos.

Hi, I think you may have gone a bit off piste with this video. A pH of 8 even from 7 in a few days is unlikely to cause any problems with your koi and certainly after a few days stable at pH8-8.8 would be fine. On the other hand, something in the floss (usually polyester) has buffered the pH at 8 and also irritated the koi. polyester has to some extent an ion exchange capacity. That means it can hold onto and then release contaminants during manufacture. Some of these could be highly toxic and also buffer at pH8 and could cause all sorts of issues.. The best way to deal with this rapidly is to put the floss in a strong salt solution for about 10 mins and then wash in water. Another way that sometimes helps is using activated carbon but that doesnt always work. Then it will be fine. Long/short, its not the higher pH buffering its whatever is causing it which could be highly toxic even in small amounts. There are too many possibilities to list and it would be a guess anyway. Good luck!

Hi Andy! Great video as always! I agree with Mark and I don’t think it is the ph change that is causing your Koi’s to flash. My ph is between 8 to 8.5 with a Kh of around 12. However as soon winter starts my ph goes down to 7.5 due to rain and it happens very quick in just a couple days and my Koi’s don’t bother about it at all. All the Best and I will test filter floss here for you.

Interesting video , Andy . I`ve had similar issues with my PH fluctuating between 8.0 in the morning and 8.6 in the evening . Fish not happy . I believe one of the main causes is algae which blooms during the day and dies off at night . Ive had an issue with my UV ( blew 2 replacement bulbs) and also blanket weed is starting to sprout . I`m hoping , if I get these issues under control , then it should stabalise . Like you , my ponds not shaded , so probably wont help . I`ve also been told that adding extra air can help

Hi Andy, as your doing a few tests. It might be a good test to take some pond water measure the PH when you get it stabilised or you tap water at 7 and then add the treatments that you added to the pond and see if they have an affect in the PH after as I find it more likely it’s all the chemicals that you’ve added than the filter floss for the size of your pond. Every days a school day. Good luck

Hi. Really interesting, particularly as we've been looking at the pH swings throughout the day (although I'm not sure why that is suddenly a factor given that it must always be like that). We always run around 8, and I'll now start looking to see if there's any correlation with whether we have floss in or not. (Circumstantial evidence only)
Anyway just a thought on the filter floss. It may be possible to see if it is leaching an alkali if you do the test with a known amount of new floss in a known amount of water - then repeat with the same quantities of used floss once you take it out. It won't show you what pH change it produces in your pond volume, but it may give you an idea of whether washing the flow first will help.

Andy, the ph of tap water goes up when it’s settled. So if you take a sample of water and let it sit for 24hrs it will naturally go up. So that’s what’s likely happened with your test on the filter floss, not that the floss has made the ph rise.
Your ponds ph will have gone up from lots of fresh water going in and that fresh water settling. When you start to put less water in the kh will be consumed by the filters and that will steadily lower the ph as the kh level drops 👍

Great video Andy love your school days im not sure its the ph thats causing them to flash sulk maybe but if i get a ph swing they dont flash they just sulk.

im not a fish keeper im a learnard water filtration manager and when i was running my reef marine system a very special water filtration monitor lol. what is near your air pump and how long is it running because there might be something the pump is picking up and pumping it through the water
ive always used floss even on my mariane system and alot if the time if the airpump was in a high co2 rich area that can affect the ph of the water here in coventry ive had ph from the tap as high as 8 as a normal. the ph on your floss could be coming off dust or fumes in the air that have landed on the outer layer of your roll it looks like you have a good gas exchange from the surface so id look into the where the pump is and the enviroment of the air being pumped

You need to do a control test of pond water left in just that bucket for the same length of time as the filter wool ... that is a cheap builders bucket made from recycled plastic which could have also been in contact with all manner of caustic and toxic chemicals in the past.

I currently have around £150 of different treatments in stock which include blanket weed treatments. I would estimate maybe another £60 if more treatments are required through the season? Hi Andy, now this one has got me curious mate. Last year, in the couple of months leading up to winter my koi were flashing, but with no further symptoms and nothing from any scrapes. To keep it short, it calmed down in the winter, but there was far less need to change the filter wool as I was hardly feeding. I also wasn’t keeping my KH as high as I should have been. As the temps came up the flashing started again and I did eventually find costia, but could be coincidence and due to stress from something else. Anyway, all has appeared ok so far this year, with the exception of last week, I saw a couple of koi flash after a water and filter wool change. Calmed down the next day tho. But I think it may be worth me carrying out a few tests like you have done, just to check. Not sure when I will get the chance tho, as just had my day off today. Hi Andy. What is the difference in pH between morning and Evening? If its pretty stable then its probably not likely to be that causing the flashing, albeit I would still prefer to lower it if its been at 8.8.
In regards to why it's risen from the level that your tap water is at, have you added any more air/air stones to the pond? Is there any more Algae build up than usual? Have you used a different food? Used Bi-carb at all?

The pH from tape water is not representing of the actual pH. Once the chlorine gases off and the water stabilises, usually around 3 days you'll find the pH will have increased to it's actual level. Also with the shear amount of sun we are having at present, photosynthesis will increase the pH levels during the day. Once the sun starts to go down, the pH starts to lower in the pond. Anything more than .2 on the pH scale and your fish will respond. They hate it. Your fish will have been flashing more in the evening I'd bet. So just adding fresh water to combat it is only giving you a false positive. You'll also be stressing the fish a bit with the pH swings. The only true way of stabilizing the pH is to run RO or Recycle RO. Do not start adding pH up/down products. The filter wool is not the problem.
