You sold me on the SF40. I’ll move between the Fuj EFX20 and a Profoto kit depending on the situation, but always wanted a “middle” option that could be easier. Looks like SF40 is the way to go.
Dumb(?) question: what’s the difference between the A (auto) and TTL modes on the SF40…? You’re talking about doing everything “automatically” with the SF40 but it looks like your mode dial is set to TTL. The manual doesn’t really offer a good answer so I’m hoping you can provide some clarity…? Appreciate all of your videos! Thanks.
we miss a more performant on camera flash lije the profoto A1 or V1 from Godox. Some reason to stick going with my Sony instead of my SLS2 for events@@kaskoPhoto
@@kaskoPhoto Does your Godox Remote works in HSS with your M system? I cannot make mine work, and tried everything on both of my Leicas. I get the shutter half way all the time giving me those black bars over the image.
Thanks for the video. I rarely use flash with my Leicas. However, last year, I needed to capture some wide images of room interiors and my "full-frame" M6 and M10 Leica rangefinders with an adapted 14mm f/2.8 Nikon lens and two radio remote control flash units with diffusers were all I had with me. Worked out very well.
I would love to shoot nothing but natural light, unfortunately when “they” are signing the checks, I don’t always get my way. 😂 But the Ms are thankfully just as good with flash.
Thanks for posting. Can you share your camera and SF 40 settings? Just got an SF 40 (about a day ago) for a Leica Q3. I have the flash in TTL mode, and with the Q3 there are three options: 1. "auto" option (my current setting), 2. an "on" option and 3. a "slow "sync option. Currently, I have manual aperture, manual shutter, auto ISO. Don't even know if the options are the same in the M11.
I like all manual when using flash but for the 1. “Auto” if this is the camera, the camera will determine when the flash will fire. “On” means when the flash is on the camera it will fire. And 3. Having the camera set at auto shutter speed will select a slower shutter speed. I find that auto iso is not a flashes friend in most cases. Select your iso and then try it in TTL mode.
Thank you for your reply. I am finding the auto ISO for flashes a love/hate kind of relationship. Most the images taken so far have been in fairly dark settings. Tomorrow will try it out in the outdoors. It is outdoors where the use of the flash to do fill work for most of my images. I shall see how it goes. May I suggest a video on how you do direct/speedlite photography. Including camera settings and flash settings. One subject, one camera (preferably Leica), one flash (preferably Leica SF 40) with your Leica camera settings. My searches in UA-cam have not found useful channels doing a good job in this subject matter. A tutorial if you wish. Hope you are not gagging at the moment. ;) Just a suggestion, thanks for listening. @@kaskoPhoto
This flash works at any shutter speed your camera does. At 1/50th the first thing I learned and was my most important lesson to this day is to squeeze that shutter vs just clicking it. But yes, the flashes work for most Leica film cameras.
Honestly the SF 40 isn’t bad at all. The Profoto with the Profoto Connect Pro for Leica is very good but not perfect. The Godox Leica remote with any of their lights in TTL isn’t there yet.
i've got the nissin i40 which is the same as the SF 40. Its really good for its size. I also use the godox trigger for leica in studio, works good but nothing for events.@@kaskoPhoto
I got the SF40 and on a Leica digital CL hot shoe, it works in A mode (TTL w/no ability to override w/compensation), TTL (can compensate the camera’s guess by up to +/-2 stops in 1/2 stop increments), or M (manual from 1/1 to 1/256 power). Off camera, it cannot be triggered by a wireless remote, but it can be triggered by another flash directly (SF mode) or after the other strobe’s pre-flash (SD mode, haven’t tested that yet). I’ll soon pick up a Leica SF-C1 remote trigger and SF60 flash unit. I plan to use the SF60 off camera and have it triggered by the SF-C1, and have that flash trigger the SF40.
After watching one of your videos I bought the profoto connect remote and A2 for my Leica M11 Monochrom. It’s been a dream to work with!
always good to listen to a pro with Leica

Its not perfect by any means but its pretty damn good. Picking the right metering mode is key for the shooting environment you are in.
My go-to flash on the M11 is the SF40. I also use it on the Q2 mono.

They really should brake it open for godox or only profoto if they would make it exclusive (pricey)
And great video. Love your channel ☺️
There is a Godox remote for Leica! The TTL is not the best yet but it works!

As an only occasional flash user with my M11, this video was very useful. Thanks very much.
Glad it was helpful!
Took some inspiration from your videos on the little Leica flash... just purchased a Nikon SB400 and looking forward to see what I can do with it...
Let me know how the SB400 does for you.
@@kaskoPhoto Beyond expectations! Puts a new dimension with what I do with Models...
This makes me want to experiment more with my nikon's and the little Godox TT350... Thanks as always for sharing...
I use the Nikon 350 with my Hasselblad - it’s really very good.
Great review!

Took a quick set of random outdoor images this morning. Your explanation was right on the money. Thanks.
Thank you for being very helpful.
Happy to help!
Have you try the Godox one for Leica. I bought it but no luck with HSS with my M11. I think it only works with the SL systems.
I have, I also tried the HSS and it didn’t work.
@@kaskoPhoto That's not good. Godox should've stated better that it doesn't work on the M system.
You make it sound as if the Profoto connect pro fires the Leica SF40. Is that so?
No, it fires only Profoto

Would the SF26 work in TTL with the Leica M6 TTL? Or can you recommend another good flash? Just want one for carry
Yes, it does work in ttl on the M6
does this method works for leica film camera where the sync speed is at 1/50 ?

Hi
How do you use the sf40 of camera?
Off camera. Thanks in advance, love you videos!
I use a second SF26 off camera, not the SF40. Sorry for the confusion. SF40 is always on camera.
@@kaskoPhoto thanks for your response! Looking forward to more content from you!
