Nice video Jonny. I’ve had my Q2 for near 2 years now, absolutely love it. It’s ’for me’ instead of my Sonys which I use for weddings, and other work. However from time to time it does come out for those too. My fave camera ever, just so nice to use.
A bit like yourself, I have flip flopped back and forth with many of the main brands: Fuji and Nikon (back in the day) being the mainstays. I was fortunate enough to be given a Q2 by my client back in 2019 to play around with for a few weeks. Have to say, since then, I have always wanted one. I can afford to buy one, yet, have never pulled the trigger. And I really don't know why. For now I rely mainly on my X-Pro 2 for 'enjoyment' when out and about with a camera in hand. I have a Sony A7R4 where better focus / resolution is needed, but it doesn't make me 'feel' the same way the Fuji does. That said, an older Q2, or the newer Q3 - with its eyewateringly high price tag - is still very much on my wish list. This is a great video and shows the versatility of the Leica Q2. As you say, most people associate it with street, a genre I have very little experience in.
Jonny, this is such a good video with some stunning landscape shots. It's really got me thinking now. Having just sold all my Canon ef lenses and 5Dmk 4's (in my sixties now and knackered) I have recently purchased the Q2 in London thinking my landscape days were over. Viewing your video has changed all that.......Thanks for the kick up the butt and waking me up. Take care mate.
Awesome video. So few people use the Q for landscape/nature... but Leica's are so good in those settings. Summilux renders foliage amazing. The color science for greens is kinda maligned by portrait/street shooters.. but out there in the mountains, woods, deserts, etc.. it's glorious. I think another thing to note is the one thing the Q offers which literally no one else does: proper hard stop manual focus with a distance scale tied to an autofocus system. I have no idea how they did it (it is still a focus-by-wire lens, afaik), but it's the Q's great magic trick. I shoot street in NYC, so I need zone focus like 95% of the time. But being able to open up the aperture and click over to autofocus and grab isolated portraits/subjects all within the moment it takes to bring the camera to eye level? 👌👌 The lens is already a monster from a performance perspective... but that little feature just elevates the already great camera to an entirely new level. Q bodied all my other kit ha.
Definitely made some of my fave ever landscapes with the Q2 saying that also made some of fave people pix with it too. Great points you make too cheers
You sound very happy using the camera. :-) I got mine just before Corona. There is a lot potential to explore with it. There are great photos in your video! I personally love it for deep green nature shots with the 3d rendering. I love how it fills the images with color and light. I paid a lot more than I was used to pay for a single camera, but looking back, it was worth it. Many people like the experience of shooting with the Q2, I actually like even more to look at the results. I saw that it in some of your fotos, too. One can look at the fotos where your friends were with the cars and the emotion of that situation comes back... same with the 3d look of the forest trail...
Lovely shots, thank you. Bought a used q2 monochrom couple of weeks ago, too early to really say but quite promising. Definitely find this with me at all times, just want to shoot something.
I agonised for so long about the Q2 or Q2m, I shoot a lot of people pix and my preference is mono but I also shoot landscapes and we get Incredible light and colour so I went with the Q2. The mono conversions are fine for me, but a Q2m......still on my mind haha
great video and some really nice shots in there! love it. The Qx definitely have an experience on their own. My personal take is the lens, quality but also focal length, locks you into a way of shooting that pushes toward story telling. And that is what I think makes it so special. Something overlooked about that camera, because its so obvious... If you shoot with a Qx, you have to tell a story. And thats where I think all the magic is. Its an "easy button" M+28....
Q2-Q3 amazing cameras. I sold my Q2 to get the Q3 and the only substantial benefit I see on the Q3 is the tilt screen. Other than that the Q2 is great value for the money when buying it used. Great review
Yeah I agree. I tried the Q3 for a month but wasn’t for me at the time. I may eventually pick one up if circumstances allow, as I did like having LOG video!
I think the Q/Q2/Q3 really is one of the best camera lines ever made. For anyone that can shoot 28mm and be okay with cropping when needed, I think it’s the best EDC/compact style camera out there. Compact and sleek with massive image quality output is the name of the game. I have a Q1 and it’s easily one of my favorite cameras with unrivaled image output, despite the aged tech. Coming from the sony a7 world and GM lenses, I can honestly say the dated tech of the Q1 doesnt even impact anything I do(unless we are discussing video specs). It keeps up with me just as my modern cameras have and I can see little to no difference in my sony raws vs my Q raws other than dynamic range which is expected. Sharpness wise its just as good as my gm lenses, and frankly, the color/contrast rendition is heaps better and acts as some extra sauce baked into my raws. Great summary of the Q2. Im working on a little review of my Q1 now. Cheers dude, and here’s to shooting the Qs in 2024 🤝🫡
100% agree dude. The contrast rendition is just unbeatable and something that really sets the Q series apart from alternatives! Stoked to see your Q1 review once it’s out!
Look forward to seeing your Q review I had one for a short while between my Q2 repair I absolutely loved it, the MP count is more than enough the lens is breathtaking, I did a review of my Q2 and mention that the Q worried me in bad weather but to be fair I got it plenty wet and it was fine. Cracking camera line up.
@@paultaylorphotography9499 thanks man! Itll be dropping next wednesday the 31st. I love the Q2 I shoot it loads in all weathers I shoot various subjects there is not much I don't like about the Q2, I find the AF plenty fast enough and if not I slip it into manual and ZF. The buffer I've not noticed an issue sure it's not like my Canon 1DX but it's fine for what I use it for. The lens is spectacular, the MP is plenty. Very nice video. Thank you so much. Beautiful work too. I’m wondering, since all these shots at f/1.7 were taken wide open, how you avoid highlights blowing out. Are you using something like an ND filter? And if so, do you have any recommendations? Thank you 🙏 in advance for your time.
I used an M8 from 2010-2012 when the shutter bit the dust. Couldn’t afford a new Leica but somehow went through a ton of cameras for the next ten years all in attempt to replace the Camera I once had. I now have the Q.
It’s interesting that this camera slows you down - it’s the exact opposite with me. It’s so simple to operate I can get everything dialed in without diving into any menu. I think with more time, you will feel the same way.
Interesting! I think more with my Sonys I could just mindlessly capture stuff especially with people involved. But the Q2 helps me be a little more precise and meaningful :)
I find the exact same thing the Q2 is one of the simplest cameras I've ever used and I still use a lot, for work and UA-cam content etc but the Q2 is so easy to set and forget and if you do need to change a setting on the fly it's all there within easy reach no chin scratching in the sub sub menus it just does it job and does it with ease love it.
I often like my foreground element to be fully out of focus to create more depth than shooting at a traditional f8-f16. Something I’ve been enjoying lately!

Excellent video! I have the Q3 and was curious about you shooting on f1.7 for almost all of your shots. I was surprised to see you do that for the wide landscape shots since the focus would pretty much be the same with a smaller aperture. Is there a reason you shoot so shallow for every subject? Do you ever find a soft focus on your subjects when you shoot, say a wide shot with a person in the center?
Thank you! I was experimenting with 1.7 for landscapes, to see how the depth performed in vast scenes! Normally I’ll be around 5.6-8, but if o had a person in frame I’d focus on them and I really liked the subtle blur the 1.7 caused even in wide scenes!
It would be a reasonably good camera without the spiritual mumbojumbo that surrounds it all over UA-cam. The camera is basic, slow and JPEG’s are horrible. Be prepared to do a lot in post. Be sure to carry a faster camera too.

Make sense! 🧐 expensive watches do not produce quality time, but expensive cameras (usually) spit out quality photos.
So what? I use the Q2, Fuji 100s and Tag Heuer and Omegas. No big deal. Invicta: cheap poo poo
