Speaking as someone from the farming sector, where I have a BS in agricultural science and a federal certification is conservation planning:
Agriculture has produced literal hundreds of antibiotic and pesticide resistant organisms. Most of which came from improper dosages and applications over long periods of time, where untrained farmers were ignoring academics and researchers. Resistance doesn't show up in a week or two typically, it builds over years as a population is exposed to the incorrect treatment protocols, year after year. So much so, most agri-chemical suppliers who do antibiotic RND, are in an arms races with weeds, intestinal parasites, insects, and bacteria to see who can adapt first: the Pest or humans with a new product to replace the resistant one.
As a hobbyist, the idea of Reefers using antibiotics in a full system, without (this is the key), without having scientific data to prescribe that treatment: I only see future problems for this industry. However, with regards to coral, I am only a hobbyist. This is a topic I'm passionate about, but have no technical expertise in. My view is this: It's not that antibiotics and pesticides/algicides should not be used entirely. It's that you need data to drive it. And hobbyist's aren't equipped nor trained to do that.
Say I treat with fluconazole to kill Bryopsis: First, I've identified a target species to weight the effects of my treatment against. And I can find recommended manufacturer dosages to treat for that organisms. How do I know if it was effective? well I can observe and note all the Bryopsis died. If it did not, I retreat and perhaps adjust the dosage.
How are 'you' the reefer going to check if your Sipro treatment worked? You're targeting a microorganism, which you need to sample the tank and conduct microscopy and PCR assessments of to have any insight. A very small number of reefers are equipped for that situation.
Which means your treatment may have been successful. Or half that infection could have survived. Specifically, the half with some form of resistance to that treatment. Over time, that is the population which is cultivated. Through inadequate treatments, 'you' the person applying antibiotics, are selecting for the strongest to survive, by accident. Now, you have a pest killing corals, that your antibiotic does nothing against. And that is how you breed a resistant strain of bacteria, algae, micro-invert, and a whole host of other potential species.
That's the problem with the community, as hobbyist's, treating with antibiotics. It's not that antibiotics are bad, they are a superb tool. But, when misused, they create more problem's years down the road.
That's not meant to be inflammatory, it's not meant to challenge nor offend. It's just a perspective of a Reefing Hobbyist, who sees how badly these chemical tools can cause headaches when they are used by individuals who don't understand them. A farmer doesn't have ill intent, they simply want there crops to thrive, there harvest to succeed, and the farm to live on. The rancher isn't' evil, most want the best for the animals under there care. The few I know, can't even slaughter the animals they raise for meat, they're too attached and let someone else perform that task. Yet those are the individuals which caused the most harm in agriculture. Because they didn't take the time to understand the tool they were using. And I see the same for reefing. Certainly not next week, likely not next year. But, it's on the horizon, as sure as the sun rise.
Had to read this a couple times; a lot of good points there for sure. I agree, we just don't have the data or expertise to be messing around 'willy nilly' in our tanks. It's almost becoming common place to consider treating with antibiotics these days. I'm curious what the Julian Sprung study will provide in regards to oxolinic acid.. I definitely want to be delicate with my wording and opinions when it comes to this stuff!

OK, never mind I have no idea how to post a picture here but these were the actual number levels Iodine 727 set point 30, nickel 18. set point 5 both were turned up to 11. tank looks fine by the way. for what its worth
30 year reef-keeper here. Mainly SPS dominant tanks. TLF Salt is always spot on in its parameters. Alk stays consistent 8.0- 8.1.

Search Jackson’s Rainbow Tenuis. It emerged before Walt Disney, and displayed rainbow colors under 400w radium. Today it’s lost with a million other tenuis, but some guys still growing it.
I had one bucket of the Tropic Marin batch from Turkey and it took out my high end acros. It took me a year and half, a salt change an oxolinic acid treatment to turn the tank around.
