I timestamped the whole episode is anyone needs to find a specific spot. My favourite section is 2:27:45 'Future of the Hobby'. Finally some answers about 'spliced corals'!!
Really want to hear more about nutrition like you touched on, also curious about torches randomly spawning in tanks. Is that polyp bailout or is that theory totally wrong in general, they seem to get different colors then the parents if there are other torches do they mix colors?@@fraggarage5922
Thanks for taking the time to talk through his process in detail. I find his work really fascinating as in my experience the best way to protect endangered species that there is a demand for is to put resources towards captive reproduction. Once captive spawning becomes the norm, no one will show much interest in taking corals from the reef for the hobby. Especially with non-fraggable species this will be game changing. Looking forward to part two.
I know spawning corals is all the rage now days, and I admire those of you brave enough to mess with it, but I will never do this in my home aquariums. I wish you brave pioneers the best of luck for the sustainability of the hobby we all love.
Such awesome Information, could listen to yall fer dayzzz, Very appreciated! One of the best/favorite podcasts out there, always enjoying the content and depth of knowledge+scientific methodology. Keep up the good work! Would to love to see a part two with Jamie🙂
Here's Apex code for diurnal/nocturnal temperature flux set to 1 degree. It uses two virtual outputs to achieve this. I have used this for ~4 years with no issues. #Main Heater Code: Fallback OFF Set OFF If Output DayHeat = ON Then ON If Output NightHeat = ON Then ON If Tmp > 84.0 Then OFF If Tmp < 70.0 Then ON #DayHeat: If Tmp < RT+-0.2 Then ON Defer 002:00 Then ON If Tmp > RT+0.0 Then OFF If Time 19:30 to 08:00 Then OFF #NightHeat: If Tmp < RT+-1.2 Then ON Defer 002:00 Then ON If Tmp > RT+-1.0 Then OFF If Time 08:00 to 19:30 Then OFF
This screams for a follow-up on basic acro husbandry. While talking about acros that spawn within a year after shipping in newly set up tanks, or in icecream boxes (!?), most hobbyists struggle with keeping them alive. There is a reference to his open-source article but the methods section lacks detail to really reproduce the conditions. Awesome interview!
Jamie is mentioning in one point about electricity cost savings. If we set the temperature of the tank considering our northern hemisphere - colder in December and hotter in July, August - we would save a lot of electricity heating/cooling the water. In this case the corals would have to spawn in our summer - July or August. Would that be possible? To offset corals clock by half a year?
I'd have to look deeper, but I think it depends on how big the swing is.. a few degrees woudn't make a big difference for me in electricity costs. Also, I like having it the reverse (warmer in the winter), since if there's a power outage, I've got a bit more wiggle room.

It was one of the best reef conversations I have ever heard. Period !
Much appreciated! I was buzzing for at least a week after we recording it. cheers
I shared it on my FB , keep it up

@@jamiecraggs9015 Glad I could help! Thanks for all of your amazing contributions to coral spawning!
The shear amount of information in this video is awesome. Easily the best reef podcast online. Thanks Adam and Jamie!
wow, this was fascinating, thank you Dr. Craggs and Adam.
So information dense! Great episode.
Freaking awesome so excited we part 2
Thank you so much - this was great !
So stoked to listen to this

Stoked to listen to this one!
Looking forward to part 2
That was amazing. Thank you for facilitating all of this information! So fascinating.
I feel like poloreef isn’t really as big of a deal for public aquarium staff. They work around large systems all the time.

Incredible information! Love it. Is it possible to limit the "ah hm"s during the conversation?
Ahhhh ummm, I do my best! Thanks though!
😂😂😂
I’d like to know how to “collect the gametes”
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
So he didn’t really answer the question of what he thinks about built in lunar cycles for the more popular lights.
Well he said Ecotech ended up modelling theirs after his and I'm guessing a lot of other companies copied that too?
Very interesting 🤔 🪸
