- A playthrough of Taito's 1992 action game for the NES, KickMaster.
This video shows all three loops of the game for the best ending. Loop 2 begins at 36:07, and Loop 3 begins at 1:13:17.
The wizard Belzed has invaded the kingdom of Lowrel, killed its king and queen, kidnapped its princess, and wiped out its military force. Thonolan, a "kick master," is the sole surviving knight, and it's up to him to defeat Belzed, rescue Princess Silphee, and ensure that she takes her rightful place as the ruler of Lowrel.
KickMaster is a platforming action game that incorporates elements of the beat 'em up and RPG genres. Thonolan's kicking skills will be put to the test as he fights his way through seven monster-infested areas on his way to Belzed's tower. At the start he only knows three moves - a high kick, a leg sweep, and an overhead kick - but as he defeats enemies, gathers experience, and levels up, Thonolan will gain access to a wide range of flashy attacks that would leave even Chuck Norris slackjawed with envy.
But Thonolan is more than just a teal pretty boy with restless legs. He's also an accomplished magician who will learn several useful magic spells over the course of the adventure, including the ability to heal, fly, summon decoys, create energy shields, stop time, and blitz the screen with lightning bolts.
The controls are smooth and the gameplay is fluid, and the variety of moves and spells give you a ton of options in tackling any situation. Thonolan's hit box can feel a bit inconsistent - certain moves leave him open to damage at seemingly random times - but it's not too much of a problem since you can heal at any time so long as you have enough MP in store, and the game isn't particularly difficult, even on the third loop when every enemy becomes a damage sponge.
As you might expect from a game made by KID (who also created Isolated Warrior, Recca, and the GI Joe games), the graphics and sound are top-notch by NES standards. Thonolan's moves are slickly animated, the backgrounds and Castlevania-style bosses sport a ton of detail, and the sample-heavy music is largely excellent throughout.
As dumb as the "guy saves kingdom by kicking everything into oblivion" setup sounds, KickMaster is a great action game backed by an impressively accomplished presentation, and it's well worth checking out.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Ігри
Game about a dude who never skipped leg day.
Who needs WMDs when you've got a KickMaster?
Do his kicks have the power of punches?
@AgentofLADON Yes, I imagine the power of his kicks would indeed rival that of various fruit drinks.
@@NintendoCompleteThen you could say his kicks are *spiked* with power! 😋
@@NintendoComplete Sharkleberry Fin excluded, of course.
It's considerate of all those flying enemies to fly down to kick range for a fair fight
KID really should be more recognized. Their NES games had heart and coolness.
Someone compared it to ninja gaiden which is still better imo but this game is def something I'd have been into when I was 8
The only KID game that I've ever played is _"Doki Doki Yuuenchi"_ (or Trolls in Crazyland) for NES. Loved the soundtrack.
Who needs arms when you've got LEGS like these?
Lmao, they could've just made him a McNugget with legs.

I was a HUGE sucker for any game that wasn't an RPG that had RPG character growth and probably wouldn't loved this had I not been neck deep in the Genesis at the time. 90s NES games were really something else.
Lots of cool games on the NES that I didn't know about!
Thank you very much!
Hey, with a library of 700 games, that's bound to happen.(almost 1400 if you count the Japanese games); SNES and PS1 had even more, too, so it looks like there's more stuff to check out each generation. No surprise there!
That was the great thing about those console generations. It didn't take an international team of 140 developers 5 years to make a really cool game (for the time).
Man, I LOVE this game. The music is what sold me to try it out, and I'm so glad I did.
The soundtrack goes so hard.
Composed by Noboyuki Shioda and Yusuke Takahama.
This music, gameplay AND graphics are Legendary
Ever since G.I. Joe, I have had a fond appreciation for KID and their works on the NES. They were a very solid development house and their games almost always turned out well. KickMaster is no different as an original project, in particular the well-animated sprites and some of the huge bosses. Also, cannot forget the post-credit incentive of one Ken Lobb to keep the player going for the best ending, thereby lengthening the game's replay value. May I suggest Low G Man on any future occasion, Alex? Give the KID some love.
You knew about game developers in the late 80s and early 90s? I was in elementary school when all of this was knew and was only vaguely aware of even Konami and Capcom, but you knew who KID was? 95% of us weren't even aware these things came from Japan yet.
In my childhood, I was far from knowing about those little details, but growing up, I took more of an interest in the studios behind the games we all know and love. In the case of KID, their overall makeup was very similar in their games, whether they be graphics, sound, or gameplay.
@@estebancebreros5432 Oh, ok. You said "ever since GI Joe", which to me means since 1991. Like I said, I was in elementary school during the NES era and as savvy as even a gaming freak as I was I had no idea about the circumstances in which they were actually produced. In any case, congratulations for being the one and only person in the history of the planet Earth to ever say in any form "may I suggest Low G Man?"
@@bigduke5902 There’s always something new every day.
Great NES title unknown to many. I believe I saw it in Nintendo Power and rented it on a weekend back in the day. Not your typical 8-Bit looking game. Really cool graphics and effects. One of those games that is really pricey if you can find a copy for sale.
I remember this game Kick Master from the bootleg handheld console I owned back when I was a kid, this video brings me nostalgic :')
thank you for the gameplay!
nice kickmaster
This game is pretty cool. I like the soundtrack!
Yep. Mastered that kick.
Solid action game, the music especially is great! Honestly, this is one of the best NES games Japan didn't get in my opinion. Played through this one quite a few times, and while it's not super difficult, if you don't level up your moves enough it can be somewhat tricky at times.
That is interesting. This game looks totally Japanese.
@@AngryCalvin It was made by a Japanese company, yeah, but it just wasn't released over there. Typical contract work probably. 90% (or maybe even more %) of console games at the time were made by Japanese companies, so that's not too surprising. This only started to change more significantly in the 2000s. Before that, only a few companies dominated totally - Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, Square/Enix...guess Rare was an exception.
The Master of Kick
"Of the Kick" or "Kicking"
I LOVE YOU KICKPUNCHER
The only thing beyond the reach of my fists is humanity.
Childhood memories
Whoa I’m playing this on my nes mini now 😮❤🎉
My favorite game!
Castlevania + GI Joe + Ninja Gaiden = Kickmaster
This game looks much better on CRT screen thanks to smart use of CRT interlacing artefacts..
I liked it so much it was always a pleasure to complete all 3 rounds.
Taito ♥
Terrific video.
I love how the plot to most 80s games revolve around a dude who is powerful enough to single-handedly defeat evil bad guys who are ruining the world, but only do so after their chick gets kidnapped 😂
Lols so true bro
How did I miss this one?! And also 17:55 why is Cell trying to run a fade on the kickmaster?
A crossover with this game, NES Astyanax, NES Trojan, Castlevania 3, and Swordmaster would be a neat OpenBOR project.
Never heard of this I see gi Joe team made this dope
If you just ignore the completely cheesy storyline this is a decent little game.
That Ken Lobb? huh
Yes, the same Ken Lobb who later worked for Namco, Nintendo and Microsoft.
Guess he never skipped leg day 😂
Damn... Medieval knows TKD. 😂
this game reminds me of ninja Gaiden
There are some elements in this game that could be comparable to Ninja Gaiden.
All the worst parts of NG 😆
What bonus that diamond drop give ?
Ah.. D&D world where your hero was unarmed combatant beating monster and witch with taekwondo style
Hey NintendoComplete, would you playthough "Mohawk & Headphone Jack"?
Oh man, I don't have a weak stomach, but that game makes me feel sick if I play it for too long.
@@NintendoComplete Yes, I understand you, the game's rotations are really unpleasant, and what do you think about it, for you is it a good, bad or mediocre game?
@@JoaoDis I don't think it's terrible, but I don't like it very much.
@@NintendoComplete me too
Is this a RPG/action adventure
Since we have a One Punch Man maybe we can have a One Kick Man to rival him! lol
It makes me wonder what martial arts he took, like was it Taekwando?
Is this a reupload?
It's a new recording.
