The Goonies II (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Konami's 1987 license-based action-adventure game for the NES, The Goonies II.
The Goonies II was the third and final entry in Konami's trilogy of games based on the 1985 movie, and it was the only one that saw an international release on the NES.
You can find the first two games here:
The Goonies (Famicom) • The Goonies (Famicom) ...
The Goonies (MSX) • The Goonies (MSX) Play...
The setup for The Goonies II is largely the same as the first game's: the Fratellis have kidnapped the Goonies, and it's your job to save them. This time, you'll be playing as Mikey as he explores the old shack and its grounds to find his six buddies and a mermaid named Annie.
The Goonies II is an action-platformer like the first two games, but it features a far heavier focus on its adventure elements. The game's world is no longer broken into individual stages: the shack and its surrounding areas are all now presented as an open-world map that has to be tackled like a jigsaw puzzle, much like what you'd find in games like Metroid, Zelda II, and Faxanadu. In many ways, it feels like it was laying the foundation for Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, which was released four months later.
The world - made up of the shack's interior spaces, the underground caves, a lake, a suspension bridge, and ice caverns - is broken up into two halves, represented as the front and back sides of your map, and the halves are connected via a series of doors that lead to sub-space passages.
The platforming sections are all about combat and exploration, while the sub-space areas, which are traversed from a first-person perspective (think Dr. Chaos or Golgo 13), are where you'll find hint-giving NPCs, important items, warp zones, and the Goonies themselves.
I had this game as a kid, and I remember being so disappointed when I got home and started playing it. I struggled to figure out what I was meant to do and never made it past finding the third Goonie, so I quickly gave up and moved on.
But when I finally came back to it years later as a teenager, it all made so much more sense to me, and once everything clicked, I found myself totally hooked and finished it within a few days. The game tells you everything you need to know, and it's not too difficult to finish as long as you take a few notes and keep track of which doors lead to which areas. It was a challenge, certainly, and the game doesn't hold your hand, but it turned out to be far less cryptic than I'd thought as a seven-year-old. I was glad that I'd decided to give it a second chance.
I also got a real kick out of its humor. The old lady screaming for help as you beat her with a hammer, the lost and confused eskimo, and the awkward ways in which your friends beg you to save them over the transceiver ("This is Stef. A shark is attacking me.") all still make me laugh now.
The Goonies II sacrifices the accessibility and simplicity of the earlier Goonies titles in its attempt to evolve, but it is a fun experiment in game design and a solid stepping stone for the Metroidvania genre. It's not the best game of its type on the NES, but it is a good one.

The Goonies II goes all out in expanding the scope of the gameplay from the earlier Goonies games, and despite being such an early proto-Metroidvania, it's very well put together.
I'd say 1987 was the year of Konami Metroidvanias. Not only was there 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘐𝘐, but there was also 𝘒𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘐𝘐: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘻𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴, and 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘐𝘐: 𝘚𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘯'𝘴 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵 (the last one wouldn't be released in the United States until 1988).
Man, Maze of Galious was the best, I own the Famicom version
@@KaibunTheGreat I prefer the MSX original. It felt like a more grand adventure, and typing the spells just seems way more awesome than doing a move. Surprised they didn't replace the keyboard typing with an A-Z word input feature, like in naming your character, or putting in a password.
It was a worthy sequel.
Están re bueno los juegos
One of my favorites on the NES . Wish they actually made a second movie based on this game .
The goonies ARE good enough!
Cyndi Lauper performed the movie’s theme song, whilst Satoe Terashima and Hidenori Maezawa arranged it for the NES version.
Fun memories with this one as a kid. I still laugh at myself when seeing Annie the first time beating the game as a six or seven-year-old, I had a major freakout and fled my bedroom until she was off screen. 😂
Looks like I'm not the only one who was scared of Annie when I was a kid. That face is so creepy. But thanks to a flash game called Abobo's big adventure, I've given a chance to punch her face and permanently erase my childhood fear. 😂
This is one of my favourite video games of all time. I played it endlessly, “hitting” every wall/surface in the game. That flying enemy that takes your boomerang away pissed me off so much. When I finally beat this game it felt awesome. Goon Docks for life!
Omg yes, that stupid skull thing at the bridge! I hated that guy. What a douche! 😂
@@NintendoComplete He was one of the enemies I disliked the most as a kid, but it’s a cool idea for an enemy if you think about it. Man I loved this game. I think this might have been the NES game that I played the most. Thanks for the video!
@@NintendoComplete p.s. The cave music in this game is a really underrated tune. Always thought it was awesome.
@rjcupid Yeah, absolutely. I used to just stand in the caves to hear it all the way through.
When we were kids, we made the hest with what we had. Games didn't hand feed us yet and we figured it out.
Mama Fratelli must have a device to clone her sons Jake and Francis because some levels you'll see three Jakes and two or three Francis.
This is metroidvania, before that was even a thing. It definitely places among my top 100 games of all time.
Yep but with more comedic lore
This is Konami we are cheering for you!
Proceeds to hit every npc in the game.
I can't overstate the appeal of games like this had for me, ones that felt bottomless, impossible, and that I'd never see the end of because they were riddles rather than than physically challenging. I went back to many NES games later in life to finally solve and Goonies II was second only to Solstice in how much fun a dragon it was to slay. When we eventually discovered La Mulana, I remember telling my brother that it was games like this that prepared us for it.
GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!!!
And because of that, Goonies R Good Enough For Me, and if anyone disagrees, I'll have Cyndi summon the spirit of Andre the Giant.
An early game with metriodvania aspects
I use to play the arcade game all the time at a pizza/rental shop. Miss those places
the soundtrack for this is a banger
I gotta say, the ending of Goonies 2 is my favorite part!
Best.game.ever
I bought this game when I was a kid. I actually sent a letter to the Nintendo Power games help section about it and they literally mailed me a map of the entire game.
Yes, BOTH SIDES OF THE HIDEOUT, all mapped out.
Anyway, it's still one of my favorite games to go back to (I still have the original cartridge stashed away with an NES) despite AVGN's views.
That review was dogshit anyway.
Childhood memory unlocked... i used to watch my older brothers play this when i was super young. We couldnt make it too far into the game because we had no idea what we were doing lol
Just finished my taxes with this in the background. Great stuff.
Some things didn’t happen in the movie....
But this goonies 2
The Cyndi Lauper game song was amazing!!!!! ❤
Never got far enough in this game before my dad threw the cart at my mom in a fit of rage.... Thanks dad.
This is a game which made me wonder because i thought they were going to actually make a sequel to the movie. So i thought the Goonies 2 was going to be like a hint of the sequel to the goonies movie. I actually did not know there was a Goonies 1 video game and this was a sequel to that game. I never got a chance to play the first one but I would as a big fan of the movie both games. I liked the Goonies 2 game personally.
That's interesting. I had played the original game in the arcade (I think it was on the Play Choice 10) and, with no way of knowing it has never gotten an international release (most kids didn't even know these games were made in Japan), I just thought it had never made it to any of our local rental stores. One thing I knew for sure was that there was certainly no sequel to the movie it was based on, so in my brain The Goonies II was just a sequel to the first game. I remember trying to explain, as a second grader, mind you, to a friend that it was a sequel by way of its gameplay rather than its story or setting because it was this big adventure game now and not just an arcade game.
But to be very honest I really thought the game Goonies 2 was based on the idea of a sequel story to the movie given it has somewhat of a different story then the movie given Annie was kidnapped@@bigduke5902
I've said it before and I will say it again, the town of Astoria Oregon sure does have a lot of abandoned restaurants, warehouses, cabins and underground caves and caverns.
"I'm Eskimo. There's nothing here."
Ah yes, the game that encourages you to beat up the elderly. WTF, Konami?
Are you for real?
@@Invidente7 I'm with him , Beat the Elderly !!!!
OUCH! WHAT DO YOU DO?
@@NintendoComplete "I'm Eskimo! There's Nothing Here!"
I don't know how kids made it through this game without a guide back in the day. They could have made their own maps, sure, but seriously, how time consuming would it have been trying to hit everything in the walls?
Limited entertainment options made us make the most of what we had. Under those circumstances, we figured it out. I personally loved cryptic challenges like this as a kid and I was in first grade when this came out.
I passed it at age eleven but had to use the guide for a lot of it!
Like i said before, Goonies 2 is even better than the first one.
One of the best NES games.
Game like this actually would be good to be remade with engine nowdays
Came out days after AVGN did an episode on it, talk about good timing.
Now there’s gonna be a bunch of people crapping on this game just because AVGN reviewed it as such. Jesus Christ Almighty.
It’s definitely not a bad game, but I like The Goonies game better. I think Konami was going to release it outside of Japan, but it stayed on the Famicom. Luckily, the game is really cheap on eBay.
Fun game. Kinda confusing at first (not aided by the questionable translation) but still.
Have you watched Angry Video Game Nerd's recent review of Goonies 2? I loved watching him tear into the game but I also loved watching you putting the game in its place on your channel.
Imagine still watching that garbage even though it hasn’t been good since 2010.
@@AyeThatsHandsomePete Cope 🤣
@AyeThatsUglyShite
Oh, you’re mad lol
That intro cutscene surely inspired a particular scene in Ninja Gaiden, didn't? 😄
I passed this game at age eleven but I used the guide for help otherwise it would have been impossible! 😂😂😂
👊👊👊👊👊 Ouch What do you do
🔨🔨 Please! Help me!

@@AyeThatsHandsomePete Ultra cringe. Fuck that episode.
Is there updog in there?
Because, this is Goonies 2. -The Nerd
Darn straight.
Man this game pissed me off
The Angry Video Game Nerd brought me here.
1 AVGN episode later
And here it is
Did The Nerd (AVGN) influence you to release this playthrough? I ask because he put out a video on this game a few days ago.
Of course! But never mind that, because this is goonies 2!!!!
Great game but totally impossible to beat without a guide. Also nowhere as bad as the AVGN says lol
You know what they should make an official film sequel I mean back then in the 80’s after director Richard Donner left and producer Steven Spielberg left when The Goonies (1985 movie) was a successful film 🎞 but It needs a sequel for the best film of all time like they will bring New filmmakers like Gene Roddenberry (who was a Producer of Star Trek The Motion Picture) Film Producer Walter Hill (who was a Director of Streets of Fire) a American film producer like Don Coscarelli who made Phantasm and The Beastmaster and a New Film 🎥 Director John Milius (the guy who directed Conan The Barbarian and Red Dawn) so that way they will take over to make a sequel out of the most popular film 🎞 of all time so that way they will call’ed it The Goonies 2 In search Of Monster 👹 Island 🏝 (1987 that should been released in theaters) so they can bring back the same actors like Sean Astin as Mikey Josh Brolin as Brand Corey Feldman as Mouth Jonathan Ke Quan as Data Jeff Cohen as Chunk Kerri green as Andy Martha Plimpton as Stef and two new members of The Goonies name Meredith Salenger as Malinda (Mikey’s girlfriend that she move to Mikey’s Neighborhood) and Leo O’Brien as Joey (Mouth’s buddy from one of his next door neighbors) but they will bring back John matuszak as Sloth (that he always said HEY YOU GUYS!!) also Miguel A. Núñez Jr. As Friday (the friendly cannibal native who leave his tribe) even they will add New Bad guys The Monder day Pirates 🏴☠️ gang known as the diamond 💎 smugglers one of them are played by Christopher Walken as Gary (The leader of the Diamond 💎 smugglers that he’s obsessed too look 👀 for gold ⚱️and diamonds 💎 on Monster 👹 island 🏝️ ) even co starring Nicholas Worth Brion James Randy Savage/Macho Man Jon Voight Carter Wong & Gene Simmons as The Bad Guy’s Henchmen and Adrienne Barbeau as Lisa the hunch lady (that she’s always wanted Diamonds 💎 Of her own that she works for Gary and the other Diamond 💎 smugglers) & even they will add some Stop motion animation Dinosaurs 🦖🦕 (Like a tribute to Willis H. O'Brien & Ray Harryhausen) they will have stop motion Tyrannosaurus Rex 🦖 Triceratops Brontosaurus 🦕 Stegosaurus Pterodactyl Dimetrodon Ankylosaurus Arsinoitherium Woolly Mammoth 🦣 Giant Gourd Sloth 🦥 The White Pongo (a.k.a The Giant Gorilla Ape 🦍) oh and a dragons 🐉 but The Dinosaurs 🦖 🦕 The White Pongo (The Giant Gorilla ape 🦍) and The Big Green Dragons 🐉 are going to be stop motion animated by Jim Danforth even Creature Animatronic by Carlo Rambaldi Special Visual Effects by John Bruno & Jon Berg Sloth Make up artist by Thomas R. Burman Jungle setting and temple setting Production designer by Peter Lamont Music by Dave Grusin Writer by Philip Kaufman Screenplay by Chris Columbus Producer by Don Coscarelli & Walter Hill executive producer by Gene Roddenberry Directed by John Milius so The Goonies 2 film will be out in theaters 🎭 on December 24th 1987 it will opened against other films 🎥 like Steven Spielberg’s Empire Of The Sun in that same year same time but in this movie sequel the Fratelli’s are going too be out of the picture in this Movie 🎥 but the film critics Siskel and Ebert might give the Goonies 2 movie two thumps up 👍 or down 👎 if The Goonies 2 movie will be a good sequel or a bad sequel but the film 🎞 critic Leonard Maltin will think 💭 that The Goonies 2 Movie 🎥 might be a Terrible film 🎞 sequel but it turn’s out to be a knock off of other films in the past like King Kong (1976 movie) and The Blue Lagoon (1980 movie) but it will be from Warner Bros and De laurentiis entertainment group production but this Film Sequel called The Goonies 2 will have special visual effects are going too be filmed at boss film 🎞️ studios but The Goonies Never 👎 Say Die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
