Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Review

- Let's get straight to the (unsurprising) statement: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Nintendo Switch is an incredible turn-based RPG that is every bit as charming, witty, and joyful today as it was two decades ago. Much like 2023's Super Mario RPG, Nintendo didn't mess with the formula so this is the game you know and love, only it's prettier, sounds better, and includes several meaningful quality-of-life updates. But whereas Super Mario RPG was quite obviously an old game reborn for a new generation, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door stands toe-to-toe with the best turn-based RPGs of the current console generation.

As someone who grew up with both the first two Paper Mario games, and stopped playing the series after trying the 3rd one, I'll buy this game just to show Nintendo that this is the version and style of Paper Mario I want going forward if they make another one. Might as well put my money where my mouth is. I also haven't played the game since I was a kid, so after I clear my gaming schedule I'll make some time for it.
Paper Mario TTYD deserves the praise it gets, we've been askin for a remaster, a port of this game for looong time n here we are with a remake!
I’m so happy to share this game with people. My girlfriends coming over to play it on release day and my nephews want to play it. I still can’t believe this is real
OG was *60 FPS.*
Remake is *30 FPS.*
So it is more of a..... *Demake?*
(And before you tell me how you "don't care about FPS", this game has *action-based/time-based button press mechanics* and so FPS DOES MATTER here IMO)
@@TheInfinityMaster1 at this point I’m done telling ppl. Not everybody will be happy with this remake but you’re entitled to your own opinion.
@@Nubdub47 I’m happy for you, I hope your gf and your nephew get a kick outta paper Mario ttyd.
@@TheInfinityMaster1 lil bro cant even learn to adjust for .3 secs to adjust his timing 🤣
“Could pass as a switch title” I mean the game was remade with switch graphics. This isn’t a simple upscale port
Not remade just remastered
@@Groceryst0re bro it’s using a new engine, it’s not a simple upscale remaster
@@Groceryst0re Dude, we can literally see that several set pieces and backgrounds in this game have the made-of-paper props look that came from later Paper Mario games like Color Splash and Origami king, whereas the original TTYD didn't do that. We can literally see they had to remake this game. What are you on about?
It's a review. Of course he's going to say that.
@@Groceryst0re No, you’re wrong. It’s a remake.
Dear certain TTYD Fans: This is your only chance to show Nintendo that you want old Paper Mario back, and you're not gonna support the game all because of it not having a few more FPS? That's so silly to me that such passionate fans who wants the classic style back won't play because of something so minor. Most Switch games are in 30 FPS anyway. Please tell Nintendo that THIS is the type of game you want by buying it!
I won't buy less than the original for full price when I have a gamecube copy on my shelf. Companies are not your friends, demand more for your money.
Yeah, TOTK runs just fine at 30 FPS, and these reviews are clear that performance is just fine, so there's not much legitimate reason to complain. This is a Mario game, not a first person shooter.
@@EduFirenze sure, companies may not be my friends, but if purchasing a remake of a game i know and love will cause this series to continue down this path, i will gladly buy it, after all, even if nintendo isn't my friend, they're still the ones making the games i enjoy
A consistent framerate is better than nothing.
Unless it played at 10 fps I wouldn't notice in all fairness. I have my old game cube copy but haven't played it in many years and am 100% gonna grab it for Switch!
Me clicking on every review of a game I know is amazing and played 10 times over the years: yes good
Lol yup. Treating these reviews like podcasts during a work day.
I've done this with other games, it's just nice to hear others praise what you like!
Playing a single game for 10x is nothing to brag about.
@JustahumanBeing-pk7xt I mean it's a 20 year old game so.. plenty of time for multiple playthroughs
@@taylorwatson5421 playing a single game more than 2 is not cool
The review states that it's more of a fresh coat of paint, but every asset was made from scratch...
"Its ridiculous that all 4 female partners have the hots for mario, whereas admiral bobbery and koops have their own seperate emotional ties"
Idk man, if you look through google, youll have no trouble finding fanart where Koops has the hots for mario...
10:00 No it’s not. It’s more of a remake… none of the assets from the original game were used. It was completely redone from the ground up using a brand new engine.
If 60 FPS isn't possible then I'll at least settle for a consistent framerate.
Thank god for fast travel.
They walked back the white backshadow? That was the one thing I wasnt a fan of in the reveal. This is PERFECT.
Edit: There's still a bit of white but honestly it's an amount that looks pretty good
That bit of white you see is the edge of the paper, not the infamous Paper Mario: Color Splash and onward border. I think it gives off more of a proper paper feel, since... well, you know.
3:29 it also seems to no longer send the player back to the title screen automatically
A welcome change from Origami King
Dang, Ive only played the Paper Mario game on Wii, which was amazing. Ive always heard TTYD was really good so Im glad I am now able to purchase this game to experience it 😊
I think it’s worth mentioning that apart from RPG I’ve got a strong feeling of a Metroidvania game since you get new abilities help you discover new features within old locations.
Say "Rawk Hawk" 5 times fast! XD
I never played the original regrettably I may pick this up in time.
I’m just in awe that we got a re-release for Switch. It was one of my favorite games in my GameCube collection. Theres truly nothing like it. The game is a masterpiece and remains in my All Time Top 10.
3 shine sprites? 6:54
3 per upgrade. 2 upgrades 6 total a character. Just like on GC. It was always 2 sets of 3 if you got the Ultra Stone.
I want paper Luigi’s mansion
Or they should make a Paper Luigi based on the adventures in Waffle Kingdom that Luigi describes to Mario in TTYD. It would be a cool tie-in.
I really hope the sales of this game convince Nintendo we'd be more than down for more Paper Mario and M&L RPGs that are allowed to have wacky stories and go a little a-typical from the standard Mario formula.
Two decades?!?!?! Two decades?!?! Jesus, I am old.
The Paper Mario formula should be like TTYD. I do support some changed to the formula, so it doesn't get stale but still, this nailed the formula well and IDK why they dropped this formula. (Still think Super Paper Mario is good tho)
It's very thin, it's about paper!! Thin paper 📃📄
Definitely a 10/10 game
Is it the _best_ way to play it though?
If you are indifferent about the frame rate, yes.
I like origami king so I might like this game too I guess
I like that game too but this is the best paper mario game And some people say its the best mario game ever so enjoy your time with it
Best Mario game i played, hope current youth can enjoy this diamond in the rough
Pre ordered my copy 😆
Can't wait to pick this up
Greatest paper Mario of all time, masterpiece, worth rebuying, one of the greatest Mario games of all time as well
I love the paper mario games....every game is unique and all gamers must enjoy this unique game. For me the best paper mario ever...story,gameplay etc
20 out of 10!
"QUALITY OF LIFE" ? WHAT IS THAT!? IT'S CALLED "FEATURES" STOP ADDING NONSENSES TO OUR LIFE! 😂😂😂😂
Do you even know what QoL means lol
What I don't understand is, why didn't they remake Paper Mario 64 first? That game is older, and would make sense to be remade first to align with the release order of RPG -> 64 -> TTYD.
TYDD is way more popular
My going theory is Paper Mario 64 is already on Switch Online... so Nintendo wouldn't want a remake to compete with a *free version of the same game.
(It's obviously not "free" since it's bundled with online price... but Nintendo doesn't see it that way)
@@XiaoPichuTo be fair, Super Mario RPG got a SNES remake when it could’ve easily got an NSO port instead, but IG it’s because that series hasn’t seen the light of day in 27+ years.
Paper Mario is ongoing, but to put the first 2 RPGs on Switch, their best bet was to put the first game on NSO, and give the second game a remake.
If PM64 got the remake treatment instead, TTYD would get no representation. (And Switch 1 ain’t getting a GameCube NSO either, prob Switch 2 tho, but still)
Because TTYD is the GOAAAATTT
Missing the forest for the trees. Mario 64 is currently purchasable from Nintendo. Thousand year door is not. You could only emulate it or buy an old copy.
I really hope this does well in the sales department it’ll show Nintendo this is the paper Mario we want and not some others gimmick.
This reminds me more of the original paper Mario than Mario RPG.
Duh. It’s the sequel to Paper Mario 64.
@@snausages43 well I never knew that.
Bought the game and loving it.
Ive already been replaying on my steam deck through emulation, but this looks like a must buy
😎👍
I really wish there was a challenge mode or further post game stuff. As it stands, I dont know if I'd play this over my gamecube copy, tbh
It's a 10/10 just because Ppaer Mario The Thousand-Year Door is the Best Paper Mario game of All Time before my favourite Paper Mario Origami King on the Nintendo Switch and it's one of the Greatest Nintendo Gamecube game ever! You never watched the game drop frames? My brother in Christ, I watch the game drop frames in the video you captured, also it didnt watch you do any stylish move or parriesare they still there?
30fps though
Why people are obssessed with fps? It is a RPG
TTYD has some action elements in battles, where you need to perform actions with the right timing to increase your damage output or reduce the damage you take. You can negate attack damage entirely if you press the right button with incredibly precise timing.
I don't really think this really makes 30 FPS a problem, but that's probably why there are complaints.
Because me personally anything under 60 bothers my eyes
@@THB192you are right. But the 30fps should not impact those
@@roquemaciel it's not the frames, but inconsistency in frame is the issue
TTYD is a masterpiece, but the N64 version is always more superior for me
But I'm going to buy TTYD anyway even if they release it a few more time 🤣
Support the game by buying, show Nintendo how WE want Paper Mario!.
ohh man i cant wait to hop back on this!! its been over a decade since i last play this gem ^_^
Switch: 30fps
Me upgrading Switch 2 with backward compatible: 60fps 😊
If switch 2 runs at 60 I'll buy it
Thank you Nintendo. You listened ❤️ this means so much to us
Buying the game again ❤
Please, let this game sell well... I think I'm actually going to buy multiple copies and gifting them to my friends, whether they want the game or not xD
I’ll be your friend
Yes No Maybe
Hopfully Nintendo learn their lesson
hey kingdom hearts gamer what did you think of vivian (like did you like it or dislike it)
Good game, I like paying for good games, no problem, but 60 for this remake is too much hype. $40 should have been. In fact.... never mind I probably would pay even $100 for a Fire emblem's remake's everyone has their favorites 😆
Paper Luigi DLC please or the waffle kingdom by the time this releases by tommorow as I wrote this.
I can only play this game with double pain. It's too easy for me.
They just released a remaster of a similar Mario game. I grew up with Nintendo. My first console was a NES. I have a tattoo on my arm with the old school Mario and. NES controller. But they seem to rely way too much on Mario and his catalog. And not bringing new and exciting games to their systems. My opinion of course 🙂
I played the original Paper Mario a few years ago and don’t get the hype. Super Paper Mario was significantly better. So far, this game doesn’t seem to impress me. Might watch a playthrough.
🫤 this guy
What? Why would I buy another generic turn-based RPG with no innovation when there are hundreds of those already out there? I like Mario, but the Mario branding isn’t enough to carry this game.
Terrible take. You're well in the minority
Anyone who thinks the game is too hard and needs more “accessibility” options probably needs a different hobby than gaming
Nah, it's not about the difficulty, it's about making it enjoyable to as many players as possible. Nintendo is a bit behind other gaming systems on the accessibility front, and it's worth noting in a review when aspects of the gameplay could pose a problem for people.
did you know that disabled people exist
Accessibility options aren't about ease.
I'm colourblind and when a game accounts for that, it means I can have the same experience as everyone else because I'm not being frustrated by colour confusion
Can't wait to play it on an emulator with a 60 FPS patch.
How sigma of you 🗿
And then wonder why we never get remakes or sequels
Thanks for contributing towards the next Sticker Star release 😒
@@trabacon9227 So let me get this straight. We should waste 60 bucks of our hard earned money to play an objectively inferior version of a game on objectively bad hardware when we can have a superior experience on PC and her out stolen frame rate back?!

They shouldn’t. I have played the first several times so will be skipping . I really was hoping for a hard mode
Don't let the meat riders get you to waste 60 bucks, its essentially the same game with half the framerate and RTX turned on lol. Its not a bad remake but nothing was added to make it worth it for veterans.

@@julesmcgarry819Mario Party sells better than Rebirth did.
That said, I'm sure rebirth is a brilliant game
Well ttyd easily is a better game
There is no reason this game can't run at 60 FPS. It's not that much of a graphical leap that this remake has to run at half the framerate.
The engines are literally different. Where the GC version had 2D sprite to emulate a Paper Look, this game is rendering more Paper Like MODELS and HD textures 😒😒
It is a turn based RPG. The amount of FPS do not change how the game feels to play.
If it was a plataformer or an on-line FPS I would agree. It is not.
This is like the thousandth comment about this issue. We get it, but we're also getting sick of it.
If running the original on my phone taught me anything, it's the bounding box lagging the game
TTYD is the only Paper Mario game that runs at 60 fps. The dream is dead and has been for a while, we just have to accept it.
Nintendo Fans for 20+ years - "Graphics don't matter, it's gameplay that counts!"
Nintendo Fans Today - "Who cares if they cut the frame rate in half? CAN'T YOU SEE THE GRAPHICS?!" 😂
Oh look! ANOTHER remake of a game we already beat. Lemme buy it again.. at full price...nope

@GodisFrisky Is it really a loss if I already won?🤔

30 fps.
Are you expecting a 120 fps for a paper mario game?
First world problems
It really doesn’t matter that much.
This comment is the definition for "Fly in the ointment".
30 FPS gives a game a more cinematic experience, plus its running on the origami king engine.
“I didn’t notice a single frame drop”
That’s odd. I noticed a consistent drop of thirty frames…
Wow you're so clever! 👍 Here's your crown, King 👑
@@mastanvx Thanks
ANOTHER remake from Nintendo. Nintendo is creatively bankrupt.
It’s a 20 year old game that is currently unavailable via normal buying means it’s a smart business idea to release games like that from time to time stop whining
And? They are getting ready for Switch 2, so of course the last year is going to be remakes. If you want original games go look at last year with the super mario bros wonder and tears of the kingdome.
30 Frames Per Second On An Highly More Powerful HardWare Than The GameCube,Yep I Will Be Skipping This ADHD Fest.
Dude it’s a remake built from the ground up on a DIFFERENT engine, probably the origami king one. That game was in 30FPS, so this follows suit
@@drakeboutte1466it’s not built from the ground. It uses the same assets as the original game, the same sounds and the same scenario/plot. But still somehow they managed to make it worse with framerate…
@m4x1k it literally doesn't...all of these assets are new with brand new animations from top to bottom...stuff that was never in the original
@@m4x1kbuilt from the ground up doesn’t mean it has to look like a whole new game. It just isn’t using the ORIGINAL as a base to build the game. They’ve remade the game, assets, everything to match the original in a new engine
