- In this video, I'll teach you how to record and edit a podcast in Garageband so that you can create a professional sounding podcast episode.
Garageband is a software that was primarily built to record music for those using a mac computer, however it's become an easy to use software to create and edit a podcast, too!
In this tutorial, I walk you through all the steps you need to take in order to make this simple, especially moving forward after you get a few episodes under your podcasting belt.
Please note that this is a lesson pulled from my premium podcasting course, Power-up Podcasting (www.poweruppodc...), so if you hear references to other videos or lessons in the course, that's why they are there.
That said, if you've found this video and you have yet to set anything up or plan your podcast, I recommend checking out the 1st video in this playlist (link below) to start your podcasting journey the right way with the latest and most updated material:
• How to Start a Podcast...
Cheers, and good luck on your show!
Note: For PC users, I'd recommend using Audacity. It's powerful, and free, and if it's not already linked to within this video, a tutorial from me will be available very soon.

YOU ARE SUCH A BLESSING!!! I am currently homeless and broken after losing everything after business failure, (the loss includes employed helpers). I have no money and do not know how to beg on the street. Instead, I look for videos like yours to help me reboot. It is SUPER difficult to ward off depression at times so I am SO GRATEFUL for your generosity AND Amazing, Clear articulation during your vids. I just incorporated GarageBand recently and you are the FIRST person I found so easy to follow. I also really love that you include the long standing Audacity. I have used it for years but I REALLY like GB… now that I can clearly understand it. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
This broke my heart. I know this was posted a year ago, but how are you doing today? Could you please let me know?
Finally, someone who explains audio editing plain and simple! Nice job, Pat!
Just remember when recording in digital audio always have Peak audio levels at -3 dbs or less. Because the signal to noise ratio is so high in digital audio, you can boost the audio in post after it is recorded and not have really loud hiss like back in the days of analog recordings where you had to record as close to zero DBS as possible to avoid hiss . However if you accidentally peek out over 0 DBS in the red in digital recordings, it's almost impossible to fix in post and is a very common mistake of inexperienced recorders.
Pat, I watched several tutorials on basic GarageBand voice and editing and yours was the BEST!
I can't agree more! He made it so much easier to understand comparing to others. :)
Thank you so much, Pat, for the awesome tutorial. The BEST thing for me, however, came towards the end: "it does not matter what your voice sounds like". I've been delaying starting a podcast for over a year now only and only because of this single reason. Thanks a ton!!!
Dear Pat, I am about to record my first podcast, and your tips are so valuable. Also, the way you present all this is so generous and feels so kindhearted. Thank you very much!!! I love listening to you. Nathalie (podcast: House of Qi, all about your energy and health, the natural way - in Holland, so in Dutch)
I'm a year late with this video but just discovered it. THANK you so much for your in-depth tutorial! You have no idea how much that helped! xo
OMG! Finally a super simple tutorial. Thank you! Every other tutorial was way too advanced. I wanted something to show me as if I had never before used GarageBand. You explained everything perfectly. Thank you! The only thing I would still like to learn is compression when finalizing a voice over.
I was trying to use my Lenovo because my Mac is full. Audacity just doesn’t look friendly. I was exhausted trying to use it. I tried GarageBand on the Mac and not only is it esthetically pleasing, but it seems much more updated and user friendly. It is 3:05am. I can practice when I wake up! Thank you so much! You made it very simple to focus on this.
Pat Flynn is an excellent teacher. I would highly recommend this tutorial!
LE ABALBIO LE ASODRIO
Thank you, very straightforward tutorial to get you started. Recommended to anyone who opened garageband for the first time and doesn’t have a clue on which button to click .
You're so encouraging! Other than how easy you made each step for us, I really appreciate what you said in the end about not worrying about how our voice sounds. We definitely need to quiet down that negative voice in our own minds and keep creating encouraging content. Thank you!
Agreed! Love your comment
Life saver! Oh my gosh! I tried using Riverside. It was such a complete waste of money, and there were so many inconsistency with the recording. This helps a lot. Thank you!
You're such a good teacher dude I am creating an intro for my podcast and your video showed me pretty much everything I needed to know. BIG THANK YOU!
i have a project tp create a podcast and this was just what I needed. Thank you very much and peace be.
This is very helpful. Thanks Pat!
Thanks Pat! Just the part about the yellow bar at the top answered a big question for me.
I wish to reiterate what Think About It reports.... everything I was seeking, step x step, clarity... confidence to get started. Thank you
Excellent! Every element was useful (even the orange highlights above the playhead...I couldn't figure out why that was happening!). Thank-you!!
Tip for using Levelator: If you have Intro/Outro music, first edit and export only the vocal track without the Intro/Outro and put it through the Levelator. Then add the Intro/Outro music to the vocal track from the Levelator and export in your desired format. If you export with the Intro/Outro music and then put it through the Levelator it might distort the sound of the music. Hope this helps.
This is the best set up I have seen so far! Thank you.
Thank you so much for the tutorial pat, and for recommending your tutorial website at the end! It has everything I was looking for, and all of the answers to my questions! Im hoping to start my own podcast soon, and am so grateful that I stumbled across your channel☺️☺️
Ahhh Thank you so much for this tutorial! Simple and exactly all the information needed for a podcast without extra fluff.
Just started my podcast and this was a great video! It was very easy to follow along, thank you!!
I UNDERSTOOD THIS!! I'm technologically challenged, but I UNDERSTOOD this! Thank you, Pat! :)
Wow! I am a 72-year-old grandma and I really got it. Thanks very much.
Thank you for all the wonderful reminders!!
Pat, this was so simple to understand! Thank you!
Really appreciate the simplicity and straight to the point tutorial! I actually purchased a skillshare membership to master Garageband but this is honestly so much faster, just as easy, and exactly what I'm looking for. I'll definitely be keeping the membership for other courses but you saved me a bunch of time and you earned yourself a new subscriber and listener. Thank you!
you have made my day with this!!! things have changed a lot since this post but i was still able to find it useful. thank you for your content! saving lives!
Pat: This is the only UA-cam in the entire Internet that has sooo many likes and no dislikes. Thanks for doing this.
I am so grateful to you!!!! Thank you so much for making this video!!!!!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗
That was amazing...I’m so technologically illiterate and that made a lot of sense to me! Thanks so much! ☺️👍👍
Thanx for sharing information for beginners...God bless you bro!
Watching this video 3yrs after you posted the video. Great video! Thanks for the content.
Great video for my first Podcast project. Thanks Pat. I'll share this with my other colleagues
Great tutorial. I'm an iOS developer and longtime audio software user and it didn't matter: I found GarageBand impenetrable. You made it easy. Thanks.
This is the best tutorial I have seen so far!
is it possible to add the recording to a video that I took on my phone while recording my voice on a mic to garage band?
This was so very helpful. Thank you so very much!
Thank you so much, that tutorial was very clear and easy to understand.
Thank you for posting this, Pat!
Beautiful work. Thanks so much! Just started exploring this :) More power to you brother!
Well done - just getting into podcasting and this video is a great help on the GB side. thank you.
This was a great and easy resource. Thanks Pat.
I am amazed! I am soooo a novice. I do want to take your course. You teach in such a way that I understood your instructions!
This was exactly what I needed. Thank you Pat! You explained it so detailed, yet so simple on how to use Garage Band for your podcast! I'm hoping in the last 2 years since you made this video much hasn't changed with GB!
Pat this was incredible thank you SO SO MUCH!!!!
I appreciate your very helpful tutorial. Thank you
Hi Pat,
You are my first step to becoming a podcast newbie. I get your teaching style simple and smooth. I will let you know how I do with this first step and thank you for your easy approach to Garageband.
I really appreciate your time, thanks a lot Pat that was very helpful!
Thanks Pat! This is great. I know a lot of people use different utilities, but I have Garage Band and this is very helpful in giving me a place to start.
Thanks Glenn! It's definitely a great place to start since it's low-cost (nothing for most), and it's relatively user friendly. There's definitely more powerful software out there (which demos will come for later, like Audition) but this is what I used for years for my podcast before switching, and it's great!
thanks for putting this together! Very useful
Fantastic video Pat 👍!!!! Very clear and easy to follow. Thank you so much for doing this.
My God! You are simply the best! Thank you sooooo much!!🤩
Excellent tutorial! This has been super helpful to get me started with Garage Band for podcasting! Really like your presentation style.
Thanks for a great video Pat. Was about to pull my hair out trying to figure out different programs I have but I’ll now just start with Garage Band as it’s easier to use. Have a great day!
Wow, super helpful. Thanks Pat.
Thank you! Really well done. Thankfully there are people out there like you making up for Apple's increasing disregard for simplicity and "just work".
I searched "how to edit garage band" your video popped up first! GOOD WORK!! - Jase
Super informative and easy to follow. Thanks for making this video!
wow this is so incredibly helpful and direct!!!
Thank you so much! This is very helpful as I am a beginner.
Thank you so much Pat❤😊 You are a blessing.
Great video! Clear and simple
Thank you SO much for this clear and simple to use tutorial. It’s really helping me and my confidence in recording and editing my very first podcast!!
Great work!
clear explanation...thanks!
Thanks Ravi!
Very helpful and well explained thank you1
Thanks man. I am working on starting up my own podcast and I am not overly familiar with garageband. Your videos have been helpful. I am rewatching the video you did for creating a podcast template
Thank you!
THANK YOU PAT! Great demo. Easy to understand. Now I am excited!
Thank you! I'm going to try recording right now.
I've used Garageband for years. When recording a vocal like a podcast, I do guided visualization which are similar to hypnosis there are five things I do immediately.
1 I click the library icon at the top left. You do not need that.
2 Click on the measure key arrow and select time (just ike you did
3 off count in
4 off metronome
5 hit the A key to open those controls and leave them open, You always need fade in and fade out at beginning and end of any vocal recording or it sounds weird.
If you are recording at home and do not have soundproof everything, Most of Us, leave a blank space of four or five seconds for cleaning background sound.
Next, when you make a flub, go back to a spot where you have a clean recording with the play head, hit R and you will record right over the mistake. You DO NOT need to delete. just a waste of time.
I personally use SoundSoap 5 and 5+ for cleaning. There are a number of these sound cleaners. I got this when it was a free add on and I upgraded as it got better.
I once had an airplane fly directly over my house during a Great Recording.
I stopped talking for ten seconds or more while swearing in my head about this ruined great recording. I got to the area and Used the Cycle (hit the C key to turn on and off) I put that over the Only Airplane sound and Pushed the Learn Sound button in SoundSoap and it removed the sound from before I could hear it until way after I thought it was gone and great recording was saved.
I now use a dedicated 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.13.6 so, older software, older Garageband 10.3.5 and a Blue Yeti Mic.
90% of my post is done with Soundsoap cleaning any hums, clicks and broadband sounds
THANK YOU!!! This was so so helpful!
Pat this video was super helpful!! Thank yo so much!
This was fantastic Pat! I had a few tweaks to make and I learned them from you. Solid. Thanks again!
great video, really clear and simple
Best video brother! I watched so many and I could not find an easy and simple one like yours, so thank you very much!
Thank you so much for helping us!
Thanks Pat!! Perfect timing for me too! I want to create a recorded webinar next week and wanted to use garageband and imovie rather than do a screen share recording because it give me more room to edit. You have answered so many of my questions!!
Hey Sam! Thanks for the comment! You won the SPI pin giveaway for this video! Shoot an email to pat@smartpassiveincome.com and we’ll get you hooked up! 🙌🏼
Even in mid 2022 this is SO HELPFUL! Thank you😊
That was terrific man! thanks!
Very helpful Pat. Great job. I would have liked to see how you used audio files from your desktop/computer to add to the additional tracks and create an intro, outro, bumpers and such. But still a good job. Thanks.
This was a great beginning tutorial - thank you!
#newsubscriber ;-)
Good job Pat. Thanks mate.
Hello! Thank you so much. This has been so helpful. I had an audio that I wished to edit, and after watching your video once, I was able to edit it with great ease (after spending months just ignoring it, because everyone else I know either uses audacity or are still living in garageband's legacy settings from 2014. This has been a big help, thank you again!
Thanks Pat! Super helpful and very easy to follow tutorial.
I found this really helpful, thank you!
