When my child were small I used to do this all the time as they grew out of things. I would always put one row of stockinette in he seater before starting the ribbing. If I needed to expand length, it was easy to pick up the sts on that row. Then cut yarn on st above the pickup, cut and detach by pulling out the yarn and picking up the body sts as I went. Worked for me and way less time consuming than what you did, but texture of yarn might have impacted that process.

Thanks for sharing the sweater surgery process but Girl, that is way too much work and stress. Could a frog back versus cutting to the lifeline have been better? For mental sake, I think so. That said, you did a good job. Question, know what you know now, would you knit it again?

    • @topcat1746
      @topcat1746 7 місяців тому +1

I would definitely have frogged too, any stitch “difference” really wouldn’t be visible on that dark yarn. However, when I was younger I’d probably have done what Nora’s doing, nowadays I’m like “whatever, a blind man on a galloping horse won’t notice!” 😀

    • @akaNoraKnits

100% !!!! I think I even said it was just way too much fuss and work and I wouldn’t have done it had I known it was THAT much! It would have to be a very particular situation to perform sweater surgery (on ribbed fabric) again!
      Thank you!
The pattern is fantastic!! I would knit this for any man who likes a quarter zip sweater! It’s simple enough that the added work of the zipper and my mod of the folded collar feel appropriate! Could not recommend the pattern enough!!

In the 80s my mom made me a coat like the one you want to make in the Noro yarn. She had to line it, because it was too heavy and it wanted to grow. So keep that in mind ... it might need a lining. But you are a sewer, so you would be able to make a lining.

I know it can feel absolutely crazy to spend a lot of money on yarn. However you can allow yourself to splash out now and then, because you are so sensible and thrifty. Knitting with the Noro yarn will give you so much pleasure. We can not put a price tag on that feeling when we look at the FO and think: I did that beautiful thing and I enjoyed doing it.

You earned your Knitter's stripes with this one🔰 The next time you do surgery I am sure it will be much easier and quicker based on everything you learned here. My tip for picking up stitches- use a MUCH smaller needle like a 2 instead of a 5, then change the tips to the correct size once you are ready to knit. As you correctly stated, the dark color probably made this twice as difficult, not to mention the purl stitch issue. As I mentioned before, I would rather unravel after cutting off the bind off and just reknit the ribbing, since I have done this both ways and prefer sacrificing the ribbing time for a less stressful process. Both ways worked, both took time, but the rip out was less stressful for me.

You go girl! I'm working with some super wash yarn and I had to up pick stuff and it is still super sticky and kind of felts. I'm supposing that it was made from a very very rustic fiber that was more grippy than say super wash merino? Just a guess but I thought it was interesting.
I'm so happy it turned out! Your dad is so lucky to have you for a daughter who knits for him.

Ok I feel like this could be me sharing my sweater surgery experience this week 😅 Mine is a cotton and acrylic blend and I also had the felted stitches experience but I think mine was from the taking out of the stitches. BUT I used Cascade 220 Superwash for one of my first sweaters years ago. It has so many felted or pilled spots. I don't understand it's superwash nature either 🤷‍♀️

Hi Nora :) I'm so excited for you to have your dream yarn, and also to see your cardigan. That is going to be so beautiful. You are so right not to apologise for splurging. It's totally justified for you to buy yarn you love and make something you're going to get so much use out of. I recently splurged on yarn for a cardigan too. I saw this gorgeous yarn from La Bien Aimee and fell in love with it. It's a bit similar to yours - greyish base, with pale pink, and then speckles of other colours. Like your cardigan, mine will go with everything too! I'm working on something else now, but then I'm going to make my cardigan. I can't wait to see your progress with yours!

Oh my god, I had a project last year where I used Cascade 220 Superwash where ONE of the balls was in fact not superwash and the section that it made up completely felted in the middle of a sleeve and I had to buy new yarn and redo it! I feel like something is up with Cascade Superwash, I don't trust it anymore 😂

I had to put in a lifeline on a project I'm working on this week. For the purl stitches, i picked up the upside-down "u" (not the smile) and it worked out fine when i ripped back.
Though since i picked up the stitches from the bottom of the upside-down u, the purl stitches were twisted with the left leg in front, but that was easy to fix as i was putting them back on the main needle. It's about 186 sts, so still took me about 2 hours, but overall i was pleased with the outcome.

    • @akaNoraKnits

I am planning on knitting the folklore cardigan for my daughter for Christmas. Thanks for the heads up about the pattern. On the ravelry page for this one of the knitters included pictures of charts she had made to knit the sweater. Hoping it helps ❤. Also Amy Gunderson has a DK weight folklore cardigan and I am considering just buying her pattern and knitting one size down since I am using the lion brand wool ease which is worsted.

Yes I saw the charts! Thank you! I was not in a chart mood when I started hahaha, so I just made a spreadsheet that is super easy to follow! I and dont apologize for buying yourself some nice yarn full price . You are going to knit every single stitch of a garment you will have and wear forever. Excellent job with the sweater surgery! 👏 I started the Folklore cardigan months ago and then put it into timeout. It was hurting my brain with all the row count tracking and then the decreases. I am currently on sleeve island…and the pattern is less clear with the decreases there. Ugh! I’m so glad you treated yourself to your dream yarn! Life is short, buy the yarn! I’m traveling to Dublin and London next week and am most excited about visiting a few yarn shops. I have no idea what I will come home with, but I do hope to find a Merino and Cashmere (sigh!) blend. Happy knitting!

I bought some cascade 220 superwash that was on sale bc it was mislabeled as superwash when it wasn’t. I wonder if maybe that’s what you had too? Either way, it ended up looking so good and I plan to make one for my boyfriend! You’re brave 🤩

I love your videos. (So does my non knitting husband actually. He thinks you’re hilarious)
I’m currently finishing up the folklore sweater, I’m on the neckband. I’m using the double knit neckband from the champagne cardigan by petite knit. I think I’m going to jump right into my knitting my second, but with some more modifications. Let me know if you ever want to chat about the process!

QQQ? On your dad’s sweater, could you have pick up stitches and just knit a round? Like in socks when changing colors you would knit one round when knitting knit 2 and purl 2… I don’t know if I said that correctly… just thinking over here… but it came out great 👍👍✅YARN!!!!! Cool looking yarn 😍😍😍😍😍

Awesome!!! .........I would have just undone the ribbing and then picked up the stitches in the body of the jumper knitted to length then redone the ribbing would have taken much less time and not half as fiddly but kudos to you........all that picking up and grafting no thank you. 😜😜 Much love from Down Under xox

I have used a 2ply super wash that got a bit of a halo after blocking and when I had to frog the project to it was a bit stuck together, so it's probably fine. But you could always machine wash the swatch to double check.

If the stitches felted, let him be careful about machine washing this sweater it’s gonna shrink, and all your hard work is gonna go away so make sure it’s hand washed. Otherwise it’s gonna shrink.

Thanks for thinking of a ravelry check sheet. I read all the notes people put in if I'm knitting a pattern, so Ravelry page: size( people put knit for me-but what SIZE) Yarn name and color. Wish people would talk about how yarn worked with pattern, and what problems or mods they make with pattern. So many people write NO notes! Also appreciate photo of front AND back. Whether pattern was easy or hard for them. Was it interesting or boring to knit? Whether a pattern will work for you is always such a toss-up.🫣
