Looks pretty decent that! I think we all have one of those cheap £20 hammocks knocking about so I'll wait until you've perfected yours before I pull mine apart 🤣 Love videos like this when people are thinking outside the box. 👍
I could be wrong, but I believe the flat lay comes partly from an hourglass shape to a hammock such as the War Bonnet Ridge Runner, resulting in more lateral tension on the fabric in the butt area, which prevents the butt from sagging, while the head and foot ends are wider, allowing more sag, thus achieving a relatively flat lay. Combining this with your width adjustments to the head and foot should create a hammock that can be customized to the user's preferences.
As you went to sit down for the first time... I crossed myself. I'm not a Catholic, just had a few faffs of me own over the years! Awesome improvisation, well done. You have inspired me to make a cuppa tea. Cheers.
Must comment on the moment where you stated - 'that is the position where my balls are going to go'. I think you demonstrates immense restraint at such a moment when it sounded as though you planned to teabag a helpless hammock . Have to love a bit of cheap, simple, functional and easily repaired/salvageable kit. Also, nice practical helping of on the job research and development mods What's not to like. If I wasn't such a physical wreck I would have a pop at that. Mind you, if did have a go anyway could be an'ell of a chuckle. Fatal, but funny. 😀
That's an interesting video. I've never felt secure in ordinary hammocks but being over 6' tall and 102 kg, why should I as even half a metre fall on your arse at my age, hurts. I watch some American Old Timer and he always uses such a setup with his walking stick through an already sewn end, but his feet end is always without a stick and what you called a gathered end. I've got some of those tourist posing hammocks whereby the strings are threaded through a stick at each end - never tried to use them, but I do have a few bags of Parachute silk that I need to find a use for so, this might well be the answer - I fancy trying to make one of those AMOK things.
Top job Lee! Yep, I too have a cheapy nasty hammock somewhere. I've seen another vid where the foot end doesn't have a spreader bar at all. Will that work better? Looking forward to seeing the fruits of your research. Thanks for sharing your knowledge again! Nice little scooter too!
Good work! Google hikerdad bridge hammock, I've made three following that basic pattern (my last one was six inches wider than the plans) and it's so much comfier than a gathered end hammock. Attaching an underquilt is simple but a pad is also a simple option. Hope that helps?
@@Nobby77 its only original once ..but its your bike do as you please .and no one will complain if you fit a bigger chinese motor (most of us have already)
Great idea nobby! Going to have to try something similar with a spare dd frontline that i have. Just brainstorming here and no idea if it will work. What about running 2 ridgelines down the sides connecting to each of the golf balls on the length and that might keep the sides raised and keep its shape a bit better and reduce the natural banana shape? Let me know if you have any luck with it
Scrap that, just realised that the material will still slide off the ridgeline and they wont be sewn on to keep it in place. Maybe a couple extra golf balls 😅
Are you planning on camping near Fareham or over this way anytime soon. I'll tag along if you are, I've got a canoe so we could venture up the Hamble and camp out there if you fancy it, I'm an ex squadie to so would be good to meet up with like minded mental people like us 😂😂
When I was 16 my dad made me buy a Honda C50L, it looked similar to the Cub but with fairing. All my mates had Yamaha FS1E, I looked such a bellend 🤣 Probably the uncoolest and cruelest thing a parent could do to a 16-year-old :)
Just discovered your channel, but I have to say you’re funny, and this is vid came in clutch for me. I hadn’t thought of making a bridge hammock till I saw this, but damn at the prices these go for, I’ve got little to lose and a lot to gain! TLDR: the design needs a lot of attention to detail and I now understand the seemingly inflated bridge hammock prices. Bought a cheap decathlon napping hammock and I don’t want to throw it away, so I’m thinking this will be a good idea. It came with 2M long climbing rope on each side so I reckon I could attach each end of it to the corners, but maybe I need to buy straps for going around the trees. I also saw dog toy balls about the size of golf balls, much cheaper and lighter. I’ll try that and let you know if it works. Might try to use trekking pole parts for the spreader, but idk if it would actually stand up to the torture of compression… maybe with some 3D printed parts for each end, to spread out the stress on the rope and the bar. At the end you got it figure out, and it seemed like it was ready for a night’s sleep. Bring a 3/4 sleeping pad, as all hammockers should, a reflectix pad if you need extra insulation, and a sleeping bag. But if you want to keep improving the design, look at other bridge hammocks and you’ll find they’re not cut into squares, but hourglass shapes. The haven tent takes it to the extreme. It seems like the best designs are sort of straight lines on the head and foot end, with concave cuts on the side. Elastic tissue is then added to the open sides to help with wind, and to make the hammock sort of envelop you instead of simply being under (seems unstable).
huge hammock! Nice camping video!
Cheers
