I *love* how Ace’s advantage turns out to be because of something which (our) Rimmer would have seen as a negative - being held back at school. That twist really got me when I first watched it as a teenager and it still gets me now that I’m a parent!

@@monkfan72 totally agree! It does highlight that the disadvantages Rimmer *actually* had are probably totally different from the disadvantages he *thinks* he had. Great episode. Loving the reactions dude. Red Dwarf is bonkers and as you said they can just do anything they like. Patrick Stewart once got a bit steamed because they were ripping Star Trek. Then after watching for a bit, he really took to it and enjoyed the parody. Ace re-appears in a later episode and if you think this was over the top, just wait till you catch up with Ace dealing with Nazi's and sky surfing a... Well, I'll not say. The black ribbed knobler line is an interesting bit of social commentary at the time the series was made British canals especially near cities had become disgusting polluted cesspools filled with discarded rubbish one of the few genuine improvements modern environmental activism has done is clean up and reinvigorate these relics of our industrial history as a beautiful way to travel around this country and enjoy its history scenery and culture the Falkirk wheel is a particularly spectacular example of this and worth a look if you're ever in the area.

Not sure if you're planning on taking a look at the books after you finished the show, but this episode is beautifully expanded on in the novels. Seems the fates of Rimmer and Lister are intertwined. Lister was the same slob we know in Ace's dimension when he joins the ship. However, because Ace became a hyper-achiever in the Space Corps, Lister has a different bunkmate. This guy sees past the slob and notices both the brains (and some natural aptitude) and the self doubt. He pushes Lister, encourages him to take engineering night classes and Lister begins to succeed. He's still a slob, but has learned to manage it better (though not 100% successfully) and gets noticed. He is transferred to Europa Station (before Red Dwarf is lost), where he meets and becomes friends with one Ace Rimmer.
@@matthewwakeman5382 There are four, I think. Red Dwarf (often called 'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers'), 'Better Than Life' and then Rob Grant and Doug Naylor went on their own paths but still used some joint material in the novels 'Last Human' and 'Backwards'.

I kind of enjoyed that more than I recalled. There's some decent lines in it. I always found that one a bit "cartoony", and the audience laughter OTT, but it was okay. Like you say, Rimmer is "dialled up to 11" - no one's so thick they wouldn't realise people aren't into hammond organ music. One point of note is that Cat's alternate reality "padre" character - which doesn't really get a laugh - was originally written as a lowly, dishevelled janitor as a counterpoint to the Cat. But the BBC nixed the idea, thinking it was negative racial stereotyping.
I guess the point of the hammond organ music is that if you like things that other people aren't into, no one should like you. However, if you love the very popular "rastabilly ska", everyone should like and appreciate you. Great message for the kids. 😅

The character of Ace was written because Chris Barrie wanted to play someone good after being so well known for playing Rimmer and Gordon Brittas in The Brittas Empire over the years.

After season 6 the writing partnership split up, season 7 and 8 were terrible that's why BBC gave up on it.
