A pretty fun story is that Chris Barry got a letter from a fan that was going to be held back in school and seeing this episode and Ace Rimmer inspired him that it wasn’t the end of the world and that he could still work hard and achieve his dreams
I bet he framed that letter.
what a guy
Ace Rimmer was created as Chris Barrie was suffering 'Git overload' (not just as Rimmer, but as Gordon Brittas in the Brittas Empire); so Grant Naylor gave him the opportunity to play a hero.
Chris was so into playing this part he actually stole the wig and kept it!
@GallifreyGals please please please consider reacting to Brittas Empire!!
I was so happy when in America our local PBS (public broadcasting station) bought the rights to air The Brittas Empire back in the day. We were treated to both awesomely funny shows.
I recently came across The Brittas Empire and I love it! Seeing Barrie as Ace was great as well. What a guy!
Loved The Brittas Empire..
This solidifies how great an actor Chris Barrie is. He can be a weasel or the most cheesy but charismatic guy alive at will. He'd have made a great Doctor in my opinion.
Roberts's delivery of "Would it make any difference if it was......... hummus?" is absolute PERFECTION

For the record, Holly fainting was Hattie's idea. They didn't have any more lines for her so she suggested giggling like a schoolgirl & fainting - thus putting herself out of the episode.
Now you've been introduced to Ace and know about "smoke me a Kipper, I'll be back for breakfast" we can torture you by commenting "stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for christmas" cos you're not gonna get that reference for a couple of months.
@@DAFLIDMAN I really hope they watch the extended versions of that series they are soo much better than the televised versions "Squeaky" should never have been cut for example...
Kat, if you had gone to new York, we wouldn't have the gallifrey gals. The world is a better place with you two in it.😊
Meanwhile, alternate Kat is piloting an F16 into another dimension.
I hope the Gals know: there is a Tardis that sometimes appears in Red Dwarf’s Starbug cargo bay.
Came to post this. ❤ Google "Red Dwarf Tardis" to see it hidden amongst the miniature sets. 😁 Also, you can use the Tardis to visit Red Dwarf in the LEGO Dimensions videogame. 🙂
I'd like to think it's canon and the Doctor knew where he was and just refused to leave the Tardis until it was repaired and took off again.
Just : "These guys?! Nope, not doing it."
@@garysmith3037shame. Kryten would have made a cracking companion
Well this episode does have a reference to "wibbly wobbly"...
The DVD bonuses mention how Chris Barrie noticed a genuine reaction from the female crew, when he was playing Ace.
Craig Charles said Chris took the habit of leaving the set with the wig still on, and that one evening he saw him zooming along the M16 on his motorcycle without a helmet to go straight to a club and have a good time with the ladies as Ace.
In the books they explain that the salute Rimmer does is not official Space Corp practice, it is something he made up in the hope that it would be adopted and there was no rule against him doing it. There are several variations (named after himself) depending on the situation, ranging from a "Half Rimmer" in an emergency (one hand, 3 circles) to a "Full Rimmer" as standard (one hand,, 6 circles) up to a "Full Double Rimmer" in ceremonial situations (both hands at once, 12 circles each),
"Half Rimmer... Full Rimmer !... Full Double Rimmer ! ! ! Those salutes take on a whole new dimension when you remember the double entendre Rimmer's name was based on !

This is a real fans favourite , the sequence at the beginning was hilarious and it's the only time and it's a chance for them to play different roles . I think it's the only time Hattie is more than just a head . Ace is just far enough over the top without becoming an annoyingly smug git - What a guy . I really enjoy your take on Red Dwarf and look forward to it every week .
A parallel universe where there's no Kat and Paula doing reactions together scarcely bares thinking about.
It's finally time, everyone. It's finally time for Ace Rimmer.
I had been so looking forward to this episode.
What a guy!
I can't wait for Dibley.
One of my favourite characters ,
Just need the despair squid to introduce the other one.....
I really was looking forward to THIS one... Easily one of the best... but there are a lot of bests unfortunately...
Fun fact, in the books it's Ace who encourages Lister to go to engineering school when they meet, turning him into 'Spanners'. Wheras our Lister met our Rimmer.
and marrying Kochanski. They all seem better off/happier in Ace's dimension. Which reminds me of one of my favorite gags from the novels: at one point Holly mentions there are in fact [only] 7 parallel universes, and ours is the bad one.
Not exactly. Because Ace became a test pilot he never went on Red Dwarf. As a result Lister had a different roommate who recognized his talent, got him to take engineering classes and saved Dave's relationship with Kochanski. It was essentially the Happy Ending universe.
Nobody could like an alternate Kat and Paula better than the originals !
But maybe normies would like them more than the originals, but less than we do?
🙋♂
But can the originals smoke me a kipper..
Somewhere out there in the multiverse, there's a version of you who disagrees - because they feel that _their_ versions of Kat and Paula are the unsurpassable originals. Don't worry about it; it just means that both of you are in the correct universe. 😉
Seeing a much better version of me would be ENCOURAGING. It means I CAN do better and might even be able to get a few demonstrable tips on HOW.
Even if not, at least I succeeded in one reality.
Alas, that is not how this universe’s Rimmer works. Seeing what he could have had always leads him to envy and bitterness. And all that self-loathing gets projected onto others two-fold when the other person is also Rimmer.
I would like to think seeing a better version of myself would be inspiring.
The similarity of the music in this to the Berlin song is on purpose. As the series progressed the producers (or maybe the BBC) made a conscious effort to appeal more to American audiences.
A different me finished university (like I did) with not 1, but 2 pilot tv scripts that were heavily praised by his lecturer (like I did), had the tenacity to find a producer who liked 1 of the scripts (like I did), and then didn't lose heart when that producer decided to explore other options (not what I did)...
Ultimately I had kids, and after that, dreaming about what ifs becomes impossible. I can't "what if" my kids away. So they are my life now.
A kipper is a whole herring, that has been split in a butterfly fashion from tail to head along the dorsal ridge, gutted, salted or pickled, and cold-smoked over smouldering wood chips. In the days of Downton Abbey they used to have smoked kippers as a breakfast choice on the buffet selection. Hence "Smoke me a kipper I'll be back for breakfast".
I (American) used to have smoked kippers with my dad (also American) as a kid. They really taste much better than sardines as far as I'm concerned. Haven't had them in forever, maybe I should try them again sometime.
"Nothing wrong with kippers for breakfast..."
"But kippers vindaloo ? !..."
...Downton Abbey? We still eat kippers now.
Still popular today in the UK
Yes, will still show up on lists of popular British breakfasts. Not strictly kippers but I also like smoked mackerel fillets prepared in the same way. Perhaps peppered or with a sweet chilli coating.
Typically enough for a multiverse where the same 'souls' end up together in every iteration, 'Spanners' Lister was successful as a consequence of Rimmer being held back. Because Ace was held back, Lister (who was still much the same slob as in the prime reality) had a different bunk mate when he joined Red Dwarf. This new one saw potential in him and encouraged and supported him in taking engineering night classes. There Spanners discovered an affinity for that kind of work and began to excel at it. This earned him a transfer to Europa Base where he met one Ace Rimmer.
I think it's funny how people talk about the alternative to themselves being charming and handsome. I am that guy!
Stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for Christmas
Whatever
"Wibbly wobbly" is used in this episode, 16 years before "Blink". Don't know if your'e up to recording it yet, but when you get to S5-E5, there's a scene where Starbug is taking off. Pay close attention to the wide shot of the cargo bay and you might spot another familiar looking ship.
I suspect Steven Moffat was influenced by Red Dwarf here and there.
I really like the idea of RD having some influence on DW.@@jvgreendarmok
8:12 Ace wants Rimmer to re-route a secretary?
I love auto-generated captions, sometimes they're just so goofy
My favourite auto-generated captions were on a youtube video of Cornholio, which managed to render some of the gibberish as "right-thinking rain karate".
Welcome, Ace Rimmer! What a guy Rimmer could have been!
The man, the myth, the legend... Ace Rimmer. What a guy!
Right after my high school graduation I hadn’t really decided what I wanted to do yet and one of my parents told me that I would never leave the hometown area and would likely spend the rest of my life working at the local factory that propped up the area’s economy. Largely out of spite I now live on the west coast, as far away as I can get from them without leaving the contiguous US.
I love this episode, and I love the discussion that came after. It's just nice that a show like Red Dwarf can lead into such an interesting conversation. I feel awful about what happened to Kat in her youth, but if it hadn't happened, then maybe she wouldn't be here with Paula making all of us feel better every week.
Hearing Kat's story about what happened with her Dad...yeah I understand that. I wanted to go back to school after my exams at 16 and he didn't want me hanging around for 10 weeks so basically forced me to do a different qualification while working 40 hours for 40 quid per week and had to give half that to him for board (despite never having to at school). I ended up resenting him and my job because I was basically working all week for no money after bus fare. I never did go back to school to do Law and I'm now in my 40s with severe mental health problems and I'll never amount to much.
It's not over yet.
Hard to imagine someone with this much self-awareness isn't empathetic and kind. Isn't a great friend. I bet you have made many people smile and been there for them when they cried. Which means you have made the world a better place. More so than most of the rich and powerful, the 'successful'. If you leave the world better for having you in it, then you amounted to more than many.
I felt a lot of anger to my mom for choices she made when I was a teenager and joining an ACA group really helped
They actually did film the scene where Rimmer gets up confused by the kippers not falling, and then they fall all over him, but 1) Chris Barry started laughing and 2) it didn't make any sense because he is a hologram XD I wonder if you plan on covering the outtakes (called 'Smeg ups')? It includes that scene! :) They are very funny! :) Great reaction, sorry to hear the story at the end, Kat!
They already have, it is all on their Patreaon so need to sub to that to see them watch all the behind the scenes
@@jimwatson1013 Ah nice! Glad they covered them! :)
I never realised until now that it was kippers up there, I thought it was a moose head or a large bit of wood for some reason, and never questioned it.
@@LyingSecret Haha, maybe you were thinking of Fawlty Towers with the Moose Head? XD
How do you know they weren’t hollow kippers? 😅
This is a major highlight in the whole of RD. Ace is such an iconic character. What a guy!😎😁👏
When it comes to the multiverse, I like to think that the alternate versions of me are either living better lives than I am, and I'm happy about that, or maybe they're dead already, and I'm glad to be alive! No matter what else is going on, this life is unique, and I appreciate it!
The "Smoke me a kipper . . . " line is legendary! I've seen many t-shirts with it, along with other merch. Also on Craig Charles' BBC6 radio show, he always starts it off with "Awooga Awooga"!
Remember back in ME2? When one Rimmer looks at the other Rimmer leaving and says "What a guy!" Yeah. Deferred callback. Been waiting for you to get to this one ever since.
So yeah, the Ace theme is definitely and deliberately a Take My Breath Away knockoff because, as Chris Barrie recalled in a panel interview a few years back, they basically wanted Ace to be James Bond-ish; the epitome of cool, as the "evil" parallel opposite of Goalpost Head's supreme smegginess.
Also: Hattie Hayridge has said this was her favorite episode, because she got to actually be there instead of just a face on a screen.
"Ace" Rimmer is the best character in the entire show, imo
@Kat... Think of it this way... You're living the Ace Rimmer side of the story.
"There's this big wibbly wobbly swirly thing that's headed straight towards us."
This show got wibbly wobbly long before Doctor Who did.
"Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast" is a smegging good sign off phrase.
So heartwarming to know that you've overcome the shitty relationships of your youth and teenaged eras.
I started watching GG as you began getting Dwarfed and now you've got me to a point of tearing up over not being able to go to NY. Testament to you.
Also, stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for Christmas.
Ace Rimmer..What a Guy!
Smoke me a Kipper, I'll be back for Breakfast!
Funny how two science fiction gals saying there is not enough space.
I noticed you both mentioned that the ending of the episode felt like a series finale and you're right, it originally was intended to be.
However the next episode you're due to watch was meant to actually open Series IV, but due to then real world events was postponed until the end of the series.
I won't say what that event was as it'll kind of give away part of the theme of the episode, but yeah Dimension Jump was originally meant to be the series finale.
Yeah !... something eh ?...
Can't wait 'til the next episode; especially their reaction to the "description" (those who've seen the episode KNOW what I'm talking about). Also can't wait until next series, and their introduction to DD! (If you know, you know.).
I was looking forward to your reaction to the Ace reveal😅 I saw a documentary (maybe on Dave) where one of the female crew said how a lot of the women on the set admitted to fancying Chris when he was being Ace
If I saw another me that was better in every way from another dimension you can bet your arse I'd be taking notes like mad. It's an ideal self that one can actually achieve.
The Rimmer salute returning?... oh yes... a few seasons to wait.. but oh boy does it come back.
Also fun that Ace was a nickname Rimmer wanted as far back as season 2. "Don't just call me Rimmer, it sounds like a lavatory cleaner, call me.... call me ACE" - "Ace? More like Ace Hole"
Holly's swoon was Hattie's improvisation.
You two are my absolute favorite when it comes to Red Dwarf reactions. My only problem is waiting anxiously for your next Red Dwarf post. As I'm sure you're aware you have 13 seasons to get through (even though season 9 only has 3 episodes and season 13 has one). Also, technically, I don't think Red Dwarf is actually finished yet. Now that the two creators have solved their legal dispute, it seems that they are both going to continue working on RD but separately in different media.
When I was younger, I used to wonder why Chris, if he can look, and sound, and act like Ace so convincingly, doesn't just be that way all the time in his real life. 😅
It's probably not surprising to hear that this is one of Chris Barrie's favourite episodes of Red Dwarf. He does such a great job at playing Ace as the complete polar opposite of "our" Rimmer, effectively a combination of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, Buzz Lightyear and Captain Jack Harkness. And the whole idea that he became the effortlessly cool badass as a result of getting the bad twist of fate as a child is a really interesting twist on the whole idea. It's not the funniest episode of Red Dwarf in my opinion, but it's definitely one of the most memorable and interesting.
And talking of things that were interesting, I loved hearing your discussion at the end. The way I see it, that's the sign of a good multiverse story if it gets you to sit down and wonder about the other versions of you out there, and the twists of fate along the way that led them there
Ace Rimmer, what a guy!
We love the Kat and Paula we have got, not from some other dimension. Stay as you are Gals.
A kipper is a herring fish that has been smoked for preservation and flavour and is another traditional English breakfast meal , hence smoke me a kipper i'll be back for breakfast !
For legal reasons I need to point out that the song you heard playing was definitely NOT "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin. It is a completely unique & original composition.
A Howard Goodall special
You finally met ACE! Woo HOO!!!!
This is such a great episode! The opening and "Dimension Jump" intro is great. I look forward to hearing the Gals asking, "Where is Ace?" for a few series now 🤪
I just wanted to say thank you Kat for sharing a bit of your story with us. I'm sorry about what happened with your Dad. He's missed out, because frankly you're pretty great. Stay you (and that applies to both of you)! And thank you both for the Red Dwarf reactions. I've been a fan since it first came out and I was very small. It's a joy to see it making you both as happy watching it as it did and still does me!😃
"Wibbly wobbly"! They said it in this episode! Love you both just as you are! ❤❤
Soo jealous that you guys are seeing this new… I wish I could wipe my memory and watch it all again.
My fav bit is when Ace questions Arnie over the technical details of the ship. I'm so dumb at DIY and shit like that, that it makes me laugh at how Ace gets confused at his ineptness.
a kipper is a type of fish that some british people smoke for breakfast
Gallifrey Gals meet Ace Rimmer what a guy. Chris Barrie is so brilliant as Ace, just the right amount of 🧀 in the way he plays him, so brill. I love the bit where there all trying to sneak of to go fishing without rimmer, who's woke him up. 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😅😂😂. I think that why most people love red dwarf not only is it so funny, but it also makes you think to. Stoke me a clipper! I'll be back for Christmas!
Love your reactions, I think you two should end the red dwarf videos with "smoke us a kipper, we'll be back for breakfast" from now on.
They might have felt sympathy for Rimmer in this episode but they're going to hate him by the end of the next one!
I'm just glad that our universe got "ace" Kat ❤
Thank you , I like how they mix up and seeing Rimmer as a cool guy . You girls play the cool character well .😎
Ace Rimmer and the Doctor in the same week , you are spoiling us .
Fun Doctor Who fact, I used to clean the TARDIS. By TARDIS I mean the Earls Court Polic Box but it does get a mention in the 50th anniversary episode. :)
Ace Rimmer has a great plot arc, over many series. Although he's only in 4 episodes out of about 50.
Had a similar issue with my father, in just trying to get a job after I was forced to come home. All I needed was for him to be able to run me over to the next town, like 10 or 15 minutes out, and I could even buy his gas for him wouldn't have to pay so much for the trips. Refused. It took nearly 8 years more to finally land a job, and that was almost 2 and half years years ago now. I'm now on my 3rd job, and at least making ends meet enough to help pay off my student loans, finally got a car, finally got my license, and in about a year or so I want to move up to what I see as the big job I want to have, sample collection/delivery. Starting wages way above minimum wage, full time hours, most of the time is spent driving, maybe about an hour or two a day packing food factory samples to take back to our facilities to make sure things are staying clean. Big time chill job, and decent wages for it. But I want a year of driving before I go out for it.
Good for you. Sounds like you have the skills for it already - but good to trust your own judgement on when you are ready.
@@Chorleypie I feel my driving is still a bit rough. I need some practice for sure. Just the other night, some one with bright lights had me scared into thinking they were riding up on me. Almost hit a ditch when I finally found the spot I was heading for.
Really enjoyed the reaction. I've loved Red Dwarf so much since I started watching it as a small child back in 1990 I think, when series 4 first aired, and it was just so good. It was the thing that me and all my friends would watch, then excitedly talk about during playtime at school the next day lol.
I love seeing new people enjoy it and get an appreciation for it, good stuff. I indoctrinated my daughter from early to be into it too, lol. She seems to have drifted away from watching it in recent years, but I bet we could still have fun watching it together.
Red Dwarf has also helped me get through some really tough times. I hadn't watched it myself for a few years, when, back a few years ago itself now, I had a really quite severe motorbike accident that I was lucky to survive, and after finally getting released from hospital and going home, then laid up in a hospital bed in our living room in a lot of pain, and with wires and frames holding my bones together, I went back to watching RD again, and it really helped me get through the difficult nights when I couldn't sleep. The power of comedy I guess, though the laughs did cause pain in my battered body.
For anyone who read, sorry about the long meandering story. Just couldn't help remembering it, and it's a conflicting emotion I feel towards it, of trauma but also something familiar and cozy helping me get through. Cheers.
You've got so many amazing episodes to get to if you keep watching. Can't wait to see what you think to certain episodes. Series 5 is probably my fave one, for me it has the highest number of true classic episodes in one series. Having to prevent myself typing anything that would be a spoiler.
Ace Rimmer is such a brilliant addition to the story :3
but just remember, in an infinite multiverse there is a version where everything went basically the same but he's still unhappy and a smeghead.
You know, I don’t think they have smoked kippers in the US. Maybe someone in the UK could send some over to the Gals.
Now you know what I meant in a previous comment, "there are episodes coming up that are Ace", actually referring to this Ace Rimmer episode. 😃
Always a fun episode, the ending was supposed to be a very "Road Runner" skit, where our Rimmer would walk under and it would fall instantly, but they then realised after filming it, it makes no sense as Rimmer is a hologram and it would just fall through him.
Paula you are the better version of you how could any other version compete ❤
It's interesting that the "what a guy" line originated in the episode Me^2 where Rimmer says that of his doppelganger before things turn ugly between them.
Having the storyline pivot on the repeat year of schooling does make me wonder if the writer had done any child development or early education courses. Boys typically lag behind girls developmentally and will find themselves behind the 8-ball for their entire education if started at the same age. A year’s delay can counter much of the education gender gap.
Chinwagging is a common English phrase, at least where I’m from, just outside London
On the bright side, there IS another reality where EVERYBODY is DEAD! Ace is the stereotypical WWI British Flying Ace that would fly up at dawn to do battle with the Germans.
Was für ein Kerl.
I was looking forward to this one! 😁
Interesting to hear that Kat had a similar divergence point in her own life.
Which would be worse: meeting a better version or a worse version of yourselves?
You are both Intelligent, pretty, witty,,wonderful and astonishing.
Not just beautiful but truly beautiful ❤️
Wait.. You didn't get what a kipper is?.. It's a fish.. I think it's in the herring family.. In Sweden we rarely eat fish (especially smoked) for breakfast, but I assume they do in Britain, so... he was just underlining/spotlighting how much he meant that they shouldn't worry about him dying.. as.. he'll be back for breakfast.
We don't really eat it for breakfast anymore, it's an old fashioned thing to do and you don't really see it much. My gran did used to make kedgeree with kippers though and that was quite nice but definitely not something I'd eat for breakfast, even though it's a "breakfast" dish lol
Series 4 is just the best. The finale episode you will NEVER guess the plot it's SO random! Cant't wait for series 5 reactions too! How far ahead are you compared to youtube uploads?
great reaction, looking forward to this one!!
This is never spelled out, but I only got it after seeing the promised land. Rimmer keeps Lister sane by being such an emotional mess. Lister is an extremely moral person, and the little ways he protects/nurtures Rimmer when he sees things are serious helps keep him in touch with his humanity.
Kat you are the "Ace" version of Kat for being where you are now you are living that lucky break.
Paula no need to worry about a better Paula turning up.
Red Dwarf was great from beginning but is really getting together in this series Chris Barrie convincing plays Ace and still makes the original Rimmer watchable and funny despite his negative personality. Great to see the other actors get to play alternative personalities too. Kryten out of costume too again he really party of crew no and was the Chemical X that was missing from the early episodes that makes the formula work.
u got some new catchphrase and actions to use
What a (Gallifrey) Gal! 😀
What a guy💪
Kat - If you believe in the multiverse then focus on the fact that there are many other realities where you aren’t the fabulous version of you that we know and love. Yes - some would be better but many would be worse. Maybe you are the ‘Ace’ Kat.
that is an amazing way to look at the multiverse!
Barrie was so good at playing Ace.
The Rule of Funny was clearly in effect at the end. The kippers should have fallen through Rimmer, but landing on his head was funnier.
I’m really sorry to hear Kat’s story. In my experience, if you have a bad home situation, you do anything not to go back there.
Make *SURE* you watch the end credits of the next episode!
Oh Ace Rimmer.
What a guy!! 😍
Smoke him a kipper he will be back.
Enter: Ace Rimmer.
