- Now the sculptural tables are just about completed and I will discuss, level and apply finish to the four pieces. Most people can make a furniture, but turning it into a unique piece of art is another level of craftsmanship. Such an awesome series of transforming something into amazing!

That being said, I would love to find an excuse to travel to that region again sooner than later, perhaps even fly in to the closest strip and rent something with wheels. Such fine creative sculptures...from storm surge beach found myrtle rootballs/stumps - lovely organic shapes, colors, textures. I imagine - over time - the maturing color /patina just embellishes what you initially created. Such a pleasure to watch the process. TY.

I happened to alight upon your video. Your work is very inspirational and indeed very unique. It must be very tricky to make "yet another" table that's got something to say. This is the case here. You've put a great personal touch on your work, and I must admit I really enjoyed your surface treatment. I've done miles of French polishing on antiques -I live in Paris France- and this is a pleasant change to see. It's so alive and organic. You have my complete admiration.

Thanks! The idea of using poly with linseed oil and bees wax I got from a Sam Maloof formula published in Fine Woodworking a few years back.

Fascinating. Really enjoyed watching, and did so in amazement. I LOVE collecting large pieces of driftwood, pressure washing, cleaning, drying for months at a time, but I'm not very good at identifying the type of wood. Thanks, they are pentagon shape tables made from 10 smaller triangles, and I burnt the wood in shou sugi ban technic. :)

love wood and timber art projects myself. these tables are spectacular. I can't seem to accept the gouge work on the surface. I'd have taken a scoop gouge to all side surfaces for aesthetics and texture. in knowing that the tables made like this, they'll never hold a true plane. I think the gouges speak to this reality as the artist try's to let you know the surface isn't expected to maintain an even plane.
regardless id dig deeper and invest in a drying kiln to achieve correct moisture levels maybe even try soaking the timbers in glycerin to lock in its shape before craving.
there are expensive alternatives but this is what I've used with good success and is safe.
best of luck, keep evolving.
I don't have half the passion or physical wellness to achieve anything this grand but someday I might.
till then I'll have to share my creative criticism

in shock..!.came across the first video as i was just about to put the laptop down and get some rest before work tomorrow morning... but now 9 videos later im not sure i should even bother going to work in the morning... because as a woodwork teacher myself, i now know that neither my students or even i will ever produce such wonders!! I was in Bandon, Oregon helping my sister repair her barn. In the mean time I was making bench furniture for her and her friends and they suggested I make furniture as a business. It didn't work out staying with my sister but I do miss the nice people, the ocean, and the peace working with old wood.

Wood is a living medium and the work gives it even more life, and also, as David described, the pieces look like they are in motion. The two pieces of wood are through bolted and glued together. There are wood plugs covering the bolt ends.
David, great video, would you tell me more about the finish of oil and wax..? perhaps a video on it...?

The finish I use:
1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 thinner, 1/3 polyurethane, and grated beeswax melted together to the consistency of cream. Rub the finish into the wood and when it is dry (probably a day or two) buff it out. You can repeat the process a couple times to have a more durable surface. The finish is liquid resistant, however not liquid proof. This formula is very close to Sam Maloof's formula published in Fine WoodWorking November/December 1980. Hope this works for you!

The only designs that ever exist are the ones I directly draw onto the piece as it develops. By working this way the resulting form best lends itself to utilizing the original raw wood shape.

I love watching masters do their work. You just seem so confident in everything you do. How many hours goes into a piece on average? You must have at least 5000 hours by now. They say (Malcom Gladwell in his book Outliers) you need 10000 hours to become a world class master.
Also do you have any trouble selling your pieces? Just curious, keep up the great work!

I began carving 40 years ago...so who knows how many hours it all adds up to? There is no easy way to calculate an average on how long it takes to make a piece from start to finish. I usually work on 4 or 5 pieces at a time...the larger sculptures take at least 2-3 months. At times sales have been very good and other times very slow...generally if you want to make a lot of money I would suggest going into a profession other than art! You have to make art because it is what you really want to do.
David Groth Thanks for responding. Yea art is known to be a really tough profession to make money in, I don't think I'd ever do it unless I really had a passion for it.
Please can you tell what kind of coating you use? I couldn't understand it in the video - if i remember correct it is a self made coating? I ask because i use a wood wax from the hardwarestore called "Hartölwachs" in german and i looking for some alternatives to wax the wooden gun shafts of old muzzleloaders.

I build small boxes. I level my feet with sticky sandpaper on a flat pc of melanine--I'm glad I don't have to use a chainsaw! lol

Hi, beautiful work sir. I am curious about that finish paste. You've mention that it is made out of three ingrediencies but I've managed to understand 2 only, linseeds oil and bee wax but have difficulties to understand the third one.
Dont remember if it was bugs bunny or Disneyland where they chop down a huge tree for one toothpick.
