India lives in a very bad neighborhood. To the North they have China, with whom they've had disputes over control some border regions for centuries. China has twice as many nukes as India and the largest conventional army in the World. To the East they have Pakistan, which was artificially created in 1947 as a way to allow Muslims to have their own country and stop the civil war between Muslims and everybody else (Hindus, Sikhs, etc.) in India, and has a red hot military situation in the border with Pakistan. Pakistan also has some 20 more nukes than India, and a slightly smaller conventional army. I wouldn't be surprise if India makes #1 within a decade.

A better economy is what makes a nation strong, in case of non nuclear war, we'll have advantage over pakistan, china will defeat india for sure. But it's 2019 i don't believe we'll see any other world war in future it's just big talks and warnings no one goes to actual war nowdays

1. If we look at Indian history, India has never attacked any country first. Indian Military policy has always been DEFENSIVE.
2. The geopolitical situation around India has forced India to build up such a huge military.
In 1962, we trusted chinese but they backstabbed us and attacked us. At that time, we weren't spending much on our military but time has taught us to be prepared and be strong in order to DEFEND ourselves.
3. It's written in our ancient scriptures that "Only a strong one can bring the peace, weak can't change the world!"
4. India can be guiding light to the world but there are other forces that obviously will try their best to stop India from becoming one.
There are a lot of other reasons but i think above ones are enough for now.
