- There are a few tricks to get better low light, it's not just about fast glass or high ISO, it also has to do with breaking the shutter angle (rule of thumb).

What a neat trick! The blur still looks normal when shooting at 60fps 1/60 which means it can still be cranked. Thanks for the tip,yo.👍
I have a Masterclass membership and this video is easily just as educational. Also, it's 180 dollars cheaper. Thank you Josh. 👍
my life goal...be an instructor on MASTERCLASS.COM.......STEP ONE. Do masterclass level videos. STEP 2 Delete youtube channel. STEP 3 Re-upload same videos to Masterclass.com. bahahhahahaha
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL hahhaha I will happily rewatch them on Masterclass.com . STEP 4 ...CASH CHECKS
Totally agree.
Whenever his video notification pops up. Everything else takes a back seat for me, except driving on a highway.

Where is that Donate button for this class?
Today I had Josh, Casey Neistat and Peter Mckinnon with new video notifications. Watched Josh first.
BOOM!!!
Excellent video, Josh! Great balance between benefits and obligatory cautions. Loved it.
This reminds me of your 8K Raw burst hyperlapse video. Niche film technique that can only be used in certain situations with certain subjects and you have to make some sacrifices. But when done well, you end up with a hell of an effect! Nicely done.
This is a game changing. I've been doing it sometimes without being conscious and now I know the possibilities. Once again hands down man
I can’t believe how much work you put into this videos. I thought I spent a lot of time on my videos
God I love this channel. You are the Batman of camera channels!
Love your videos, the shots, the idea behind them and how you explain every detail. 10/10
Great as always. Good to have you back! And congrats, again!
I shot a gala event with a contemporary dance performance a few days ago. Used 360 with the bmpcc4k & a variety of canon lenses. Even with all the movement I'm happy with the results. Was able to shoot at 1600 iso rather than 3200 for cleaner results. Did use a tripod. On another note I used your idea of the external battery pack & have made three of them. Two 6000 units & one 3000. I adapted small quick release plates to all of them & couldn't be happier with the setup. Thanks for the great videos!
Epic explanation...this exact thought crossed my mind in December when I filmed christmas lights...so I shot a lot of 60p stuff at 1/60 and 1/100 to get some extra light on my GH5s to get some insanely crisp low light...You nailed the explanation!
Very professional explanation, I think this channel is underrated, thanks a lot!
Thanks dude!
Even when I'm not in video learning mode and focusing on other things in life, your content remains a priority.
I spend a lot of time on UA-cam searching for info. Thank God for Make.Art.Now. Number “ONE” channel without a doubt. 🙏🏻
I've been looking for a camera upgrade lately, and I think I've been focusing in on the BMPCC 4k, simply because Josh's videos are so helpful and rad! Keep it up sir!
I was actually JUST thinking about this last night... I've followed the 180 rule religiously and never even thought to break it unless I wanted that whole "Saving Private Ryan" look.... but to potentially gain a stop of light in a pinch is game changing. Thanks for doing the experimenting so that I didn't have to! :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge about it dude! I've been learning so much with you in the last months
I’ve learned so much from your channel. Your videos are incredibly informative AND entertaining! Thank you for what you do!
I am enjoying your vids so much, thanks for put all this information out there!
What a fantastic way of teaching this guy has. Amazing work.
This is awesome! About to go try this out now with my iPhone XS Max... love shooting low light, well done, thank you!
great video. the amount of info, pace, etc all perfect. keep them coming
Gawd I love your videos man! The music, narration, shots, ultra crazy tips for ... hmm.. making art! Thanks Josh!!!
Thanks yo!
always good to see you tweak the oft confusing digital boundaries and also educate as to what went before. indeed, the SPR movie got that shutter angle trick from the music videos DP's that were using the technique way back in the '80s. digital has opened up a new playing field and democratized the game. in fact, when the bmpcc gives shutter 'angle' option, I'd be curious to know how they emulate the actual physical film shutter angle internally.
Fantastic advice on how, when and why to break a rule! Thanks
I used this theory and your low light settings for the Sony a7Riii, and wow. I could see the stars at night, stars that I couldn’t see with my naked eye. It’s incredible. Thank you
Solid!! I feel like the 180 rule has been taught so much with out any explanation in turn limiting the creativity of us as filmmakers thinking we “have” to stick to this arbitrary rule.
It’s always nice seeing such a greatly produced video. Even though I already use that trick, I appreciate the triangle at the end as well, saying it’s a last resort but it works :)
Thank you for the Greatly organized parameter of shutter angle, aperture, iso.
Especially the artifacts of motion optical flow will have happened.
So much information in your videos, love it
AWESOME video!! Thank you, Josh!!
Man I can wait for your next video, EVERY single time you just 🤯 my mind. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and good vibes
Thanks man!
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL Thank YOU for inspiring us and for the work you put in your videos ! Would love to learn how you make a run and gun settings on the A7III to switch from 24 fps to 120 fps. I mean yeah 1 and 2 custom weel but how do we dont fuck up with the nd filter + shutter speed rule for 5min... Like instant switch when you want capture this epic moment in 120fps and have no time to waste... 😓 Anyway love your content bro ! Keep the great work ! 🤙
Such great advice man. I’ve been breaking this rule while shooting at 125fps for a while now. Heck at that speed everything stays sharp anyway even after being slowed down.
My favorite time traveler, back at it again with the dope vids.
Thanks Tommy!
Congrats Josh. Blessings 🥳🥳🥳
First time I have come across you, Josh. Seriously talented behind and in front of the camera. Well done.
love your videos man!
Cool. Congrats and welcome back
You the best josh, so much inspiration look your videos!!
yo... that one stop makes a MASSIIVVEEE difference.. now i need to find a cool cave to film in, thank you for this one!
Truth!!!
I would say with film cameras, 180 degrees shutter angle wasn't chosen because of most cinematic motion blur (our days, with digital cameras you may choose it because of that reason). However ...
Film cameras with rotary disc shutter might be set to other shutter angles too, and it's done not for motion blur, but for exposure purposes (of course with longer exposure you may have stronger motion blur. But i think way back then people wasn't considering motion blur.)
Also film cameras with rotary disc shutter can't be set to shutter angle 360, because they need to have time to switch the film to the next frame (without smearing the frame), and that remaining angle (the whole part of the rotary disc) is used to cover the frame from light while it slides out and a fresh one slides in.
360 degree means exposure during all the time of a one single frame on any particular frame rate.
So on frame-rate 24 fps:
360 degrees shutter means 1/24
180 = 1/48
90 = 1/96
On 30 fps:
360 degrees shutter means 1/30
180 = 1/60
90 = 1/120
And you can have 360 degrees shutter speed only with digital cameras. With film cameras you can't dedicate all time of the frame to a frame, because you need to have some time to switch to the next frame (as i explained above)
Thanks for the explanations! I often put my shutter speed from 120 to 100 at 60p to stop rolling shutter in certain lighting.
you can sometimes tell but most people won't notice.
You couldn't have a better name for your UA-cam channel man congrats, always a beast!
Been waiting for a new video! Cant wait to learn more good techniques from you!
Thanks dude!
You are the most instructional and chill dude of all time. Okay, maybe all of UA-cam. But still, props to you!
Yeah so simple yet so powerfull ! awesome tip ! thanks a lot ! can't wait to try it out !
My guy! I subscribed! love the ring joke and this is a great tip, thanks for getting so in depth, if it hadn't been I wouldn't have even given it a chance if it wasn't
Boyyy you never cease to amaze me! Congrats btw dude. Keep em coming!
Thanks, Jason!!! How are you doing these days!!!
Good brother, Trying to keep up with client work and find something they call consistency on UA-cam 😅 I know you know the deal!
You're videos are informative & they make me feel good! Niice!!
ok, hell yes! I think I'm going to be needing this rule on the weekend. Great vid as always! ;)
Wow! Well thanks a lot! Can'r wait to try this.
Dudes so awesome as always!
epic video. The key to breaking the rules in a creative way... is to first understand WHY the rules are there in the first place. Epic job sharing the history and details behind the science of the 180 degree rule. 🤙
thanks dude!
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL do you still have the A7iii? I feel like your color stuff on that was so rad. I'm curious how the low-light trickery would work on the A7iii (or Sii).
You know it...I shoot a ton on A7iii......mostly everything I shoot is on that. Especially lowlight stuff. It works the exact same, the science is the same for any camera with control over shutter speed...(1 stop of light)
This is my favorite channel , keep up the great work
Great hack! I actually use this on my drone when I’m doing low shots to add more motion blur and it means you can go slower to be more accurate but it still looks like your going crazy fast!
Been doing this for a while actually with my a7r2, when all else failed. It can also create an interesting effect when your subject is still and a car moved behind it fast for example.
Can't wait to see the followup video on how those midnight shots were done with the BMPCC4K, that looks insane
Congrats my man! Wishing you all the best with your life duo!
Thanks bro!
Thanks a lot man, your content is awesome.
Welcome back and congrats!!!
thanks dude!
Have been using this technique myself, works wonders! Dope vid yet again, Josh! / Dave
Congrats Josh!!!
I've broken the rule lots going less than 180 but never tried more! Thanks for this!
Congrats on the marriage. So great! Also awesome low light tips. Thanks so much
I actually tried this trick in Vegas with my starter DSLR at 1600 ISO and was impressed with the results. Made my noisy low light footage less so because I was able to use a more reasonable ISO. I was gonna stick to the 180 degree rule but specifically remembered this video!
As for your Saving Private Ryan reference, I do something similar when filming paintball, because I like the aesthetic of staccato movement in a combat sport, as it does add a faux-historic feel that players on the teams who hire me seem to take home as even more tangible memories of what they did. As such, I film tournament action at a disgustingly high shutter speed. 500 minimum, 1000 max, at 60FPS.
Sick shit Josh. I hope that you continue to blow up and stay true to your clearly highly artistic heart. Bam! 💥
Damn, love the energy you bring, man. Sub'd 🤟
This guy is really crushing it, every new video is a banger 🙏
just love every single of your videos !!!!!
I'm new around here. I really enjoyed that and learned something. Subscribed!
Welcome back! That ring’s gonna ring in every video now 😀 Great video as usual!
Thanks dude!
Absolutely LOVE this!!!!!
Damn, you are killing it again:D well done buddy!!
Always a pleasure!
DUDE!! You are insanely awesome!!!!
Awesome content as always, too bad I've already watched all of your videos (some multiple times aswell) :D
Bruh! That ring twisting 😆 keep up the great contents! U and Gerald are doing it right!
I'm new to this channel and I have to say: your explanations are fantastic! I probably would have needed 2 hours on google to get what you're explaining in 8 minutes. Keep up the good work!
Amazing video as always!👌🏽
thanks dude!
Great video Josh!
I’m a newer person when it comes to using a DSLR and Blackmagic, and I will definitely have to try to use this trick, cause I think it could help me out with filmmaking and some client shoots
Good method to give you best chance of catching the Northern Lights!
You kill it every single time, man.
The content of this video was good, but the way it was presented was fantastic! I really enjoyed your bit demonstrating the shutter speed in film cameras. Good stuff.
Now this a informative video. Thanks 🙏🏽
Hope you had a blast on the bahamas my dude. Looking forward to more quality content of yours, you've become by far my favorite channel on youtube.
I second that, my new found addiction
I think I'm going to need to watch this one a couple times.
I always look forward to watch your videos.
Thanks dude!
Awesome as usual
Thanks Bro
Aweome video and trick, I can't commend you more for your youtube productions.
Love your videos Josh !!!!!!
Before knowing which affect which ( SS, F stops, ISO) I'm using lower shutter speed (1/30 and etc.) to get more lights in, well explained now I understand more! :D
Zeiss Otus on a Gimbal while cruising on an electric uni skateboard?? truly the best kind of madman !! :)
Keep killing it Josh - would love to see how that Otus compares in video on your A73 footage vs BMPCC footage ! ( still rocking the A7S2 but intrigued by the Blackmagic )
Lots of great info in here! One extra stop of light could mean all the difference
Congrats mate!! 💪🏼😎 all about that low light..
thanks yo!
Awesome. Congrads on the wedding mate
Mind blown! Just tried shooting 1/25 at 24fps and wow, just wow! And I'd say the added motion blur when just vlogging is barely noticeable. At least a cheap payoff for the amount of light I'm getting. Thanks for an awesome tip!
New to the channel. Immediately subbed after wedding ring joke 😂 great content! Never seen an L series on a bmpcc!!
Thanks dude!!! More cheesy husband jokes, check!
I'm stoked to see where this channel goes.
