I tried shooting with the exact same camera and settings under an admittedly less bright moon, and it was just a noisy mess... Probably a lot to do with the fact that (as mentioned) the moon was nowhere near as bright and also the environment I was shooting in was British moorland so very dark brown coloured and nowhere near as reflective as the desert. Still quite disappointing though.
Lets ty it again. This time look for the Apex of the moon, you'll need to do a little research based on your area, you want the sweet spot in the lunar cycle, where the moon is at the fullest reflectance...this could mean the difference of filming at 11pm or 3am on one particular night, just a few hours diffreence could be as much a whole stop brighter-- And yes, the geographical location matters, particularly if there is cloud cover-- you want it to be cold and clear. And you also want a very fast lens. You can get incredible results with the Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 nokton or with a speedbooster and canon f1.4 or f1.2 lens. Also dont shoot RAW, shoot prores and you should not have to go above 6400 if the above criteria are met....then you can denoise a bit in post. Good luck! dont give up, yo! Hit me up in a month with your results.
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL Thanks for the reply. I was using a Samyang F1.4 with speedbooster and shooting in BRAW Constant Quality Q5. The sky was completely cloudless but the moon was relatively low in the sky and nearly in it's first quarter. Unfortunately because of the country I live in, I'd be very, VERY lucky indeed to have all of those atmospherical criteria align for me... It's extremely rare to get any more than a few days with light cloud cover here and impossible to predict more than one or two days in advance. Having spent time in the US and worked as a videographer in Canada for 6 months, I will be forever jealous of your guys infinitely more stable and predictable weather systems! Another slight disappointment from last night was that the primary reason I was out, was to film a time-lapse of the bonfire night fireworks from the hills above my town. Experimenting with the settings above, it wasn't possible to achieve sharp focus at all on the tiny houses of the town below me... Not sure why. I've been totally happy with the BMPCC4K in all other settings, just find it suffers a bit in low light, mainly with the noise issues. Anyway, thanks again. I might post the results from last night at some point.
@@gianmarcodesantis2368 since you have to denoise both, you will lose the color information and sharpness/ detail gained from BRAW. Also prores has a little denoiser in there already, so its easier to clean up in post at extreme ISO levels.
I shoot at 1250 and get noise. How the hell did you get such little noise at high ISOs like that? I see what you said in reference to ProRes but denoising in post seems hit or miss especially when it comes to losing sharpness and color detail. I am going to try and over expose with ProRes and see if that helps

"Not a big deal, just a leica" Dude ur video is stunning, and this is true art! Recently my friend told me technology doesn't matter that much cuz they are already too good but this video has pushed the limit of low light shooting to another level! Keep it up Josh. Nice techniques!
Great little how-done-it video. Nice short as well. And, in defense of Gerald's pace, I follow him real time (I have the same motor mind), and he is a wealth of info ... and there is never time to yawn! Only found your site recently: a welcome addition to my UA-cam research. Thanks for your contribution, and your time ... for all of us trying to learn and fully comprehend the art of cinematography. Dorian
No. Just the opposite. In lowlight conditions you bring in a ton of noise with RAW. You end up loosing all you gain by having to denoise. I've noticed this with several cameras that shoot Raw, including my C200 and this one as well. I did a test the second night and there was considerable more noise with the new B-raw compared to ProRes video codec..... There is some talks about ProRes having a bit of in camera denoise as it creates the file--- I have not fully investigated that myself but that does seem to make logical sense. So in the end it's less denoising you do in post, rendering a more vivid and textured image.
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL The only way that ProRes would possibly have less noise is by doing denoising in camera. It's not magic, you can't just switch codecs and get significantly less noise in the image without something else going on.
Now, that's content! Since I followed this guy he never failed to amaze me. Nice work of art, sir and nice collaboration with Gerald Undone. So much information flowing in this channel as well as Gerald's channel. Filipino content creators should watch creators like you and Gerald.

Both are great. I've used both and I recant my observation last time about Sony having it by a hair. I can get roughly the same exposure from both. Maxing our 12-13 stops of DR.
I would LOVE to see a video of the "project process" - concept, cooperation, feel, discovery, inspiration - the whole shebang. A wonderful video. I shared it with a dancer friend who said she enjoyed it very much.
Hey Josh! Please help me out! I want to buy a new camera and I don't know if I should choose the a7s ii or the 1dx ii. What would you prefer in general?
The autofocus is better on the 1dx2. Plus more color information with the higher bitrate. Lowlight isnt great on it though so the A7s2 would win there hands down. If you plan on taking photos 1dx2 all the way. That's a surprising comparison given the price inequality. If you can afford the 1dx2, then go with that. Otherwise a7s2 and get some good glass.
Would it be possible to shoot at a lower frame rate and then let a computer fill in the gaps between the frames so you have a "fake" 24fps but still shoot at a 180° shutter angle so you expose give or take twice as long?
