I would like to know if the white pinstripes are painted on by lovely, gray haired German women, or did they cheap out & use stickers?
I've got a R18b and don't necessarily agree with his assessment. If your used to riding a Harley, the R18 is different. Not different in a bad way but different. I cant say that mine has any more vibration than a harley but the sensation is in a different direction. Harley's vibration is more longitudinal and the Beemer is side to side. As far as the shifter and brake levers, they are adjustable and once you get them set to your liking, they are very nice. I did add extensions on mine that helped out a lot. Once I put a few miles on the bike, it quickly became my favorite bike. By the way, I have been riding for many years and have spent considerable time on multiple brands. One thing that I have noticed on many of the reviews is that if you are a Harley fan, you are going to find fault with any brand that is not harley. By the same token, Harley could put a H-D emblem on a turd and they would claim it's the best thing on the road. LOL.
I ride a Classic R18 and a Road Glide. Agree more with your comment than the video. The BMW’s fit and finish, road manners and PRICE beat out what HD offers. …that doesn’t mean the RG is trash. Just different. And yeah- bulky boots don’t jive with the R18.
He did mention Harley many times doesn’t he know there are Indians also
Perhaps he just had bad day but It shouldn’t effect his work🤔
I dont want a vibrating harley
I want a bmw
The truth shall make you free.... you are absolutely correct. Harley's without a doubt is a good bike and brand, however as you said competition has no chance if the BRAND is all you
know. I road a Indian Springfield and Chieftain as a Harley owner, wonderful Bike's and I'd give up my Harley for the Indian ride and styling in itself. Technology has it place as well. I too thought Harley was the SHIZZ, the competitors need a chance as well. A friend told me Harley is American, so am I but I drive Nissan BMW Jaguar Mercedes, VW and FORD... it's choice and not who will talk about you because you're different!
Oh, when you have pistons going side to side and not up and down as most V-Twins... yes vibration is there!!! Do more research on BMW bikes!... It's in their history 😊
I have one and love it. I did put a taller wind screen on. The heel toe shifter is an option ($); it's adjustable/removable. I test rode several Harley's first and picked the Beemer. Adaptive cruise control, heated seat and grips, radio, tons of power, reverse, good suspension, more lean angle than most cruisers. But there are so many good bikes out there. Great video.
I would like to know if the white pinstripes are painted on by lovely, gray haired German women, or did they cheap out & use stickers?
@@savage22bolt32 They are hand-painted, freehand with a very long-bristled brush.
@@amandacatherine793 thanks!
My old BMW has hand painted pinstripes, I love the workmanship that goes into making a beautiful item.
Funny how different people are. I don't care for heel toe shifters, adaptive cruise control, and I never listen to a radio when I ride. I have never had a heated seat or grips. but I would like it on a cold day I'm sure. I have reverse on my Goldwing, but I've only used it once or twice. I always try to park so I don't have to use it. I also don't care much for the looks of this fairing. I do like that it has analog gauges though. I would probably opt for the stripped down one for my taste.
@@CraigSmith568 👍right there with ya, bud!
I’m glad I went and test rode one for myself when shopping for a new bike. I fell in love with it right away and took it home.
It is subjective but I think this is the prettiest stock cruiser I have ever seen... Holy crap its soo perdy 😍
The heel & toe shifter seems to be an issue for a lot of riders today, but they've been around for a very long time and are actually wonderfully instinctive once you get the hang of them... once you're used to one, you'll wish you had it on ALL your bikes. They also decidedly reduce the number of false and/or accidental neutrals you'll get on a bike that is prone to them, because you shift up with considerably more force than by lifting your foot (the muscles are not naturally strong in this movement).
I have a Honda VT1100 Shadow with the heel & toe shifter, I love it. On a long ride, with a lot of up shift, my foot tends to cramp up. No problem with the H&T.
I had a 350 Duke Sebring way back in 1970 (when I was 14) with the heel toe lever. When converting it to an off road bike, the first thing I did was cut it down to a normal toe shift lever. Only Honda Dreams and sissys used a 👠 heel shifter.
You would not believe the awesome fun times I had on that bike!
Have on my Urals and love them. Wish my new Moto Guzzi V85 TT had heel/toe shifter.
@@djsomers100 I had a heel toe shifter on my 1972 Moto Guzzi 850 Eldorado. I loved it!
My Suzuki c50 has a heel toe shifter and all the harley guys I ride with hate it but I love it. Always pushing down never pulling up
“Where’s your gloves bro?” While you’re at it, why don’t you also ask if he’s had enough to eat and if he needs his clothes washed…
Bike has 3 ride modes. Rock, Roll & Rain. You had Rock mode, that’s why you felt the vibration. Roll & Rain doesn’t…..
Why is that? What’s rock mode
100% i have one and rock mode wants to shake but at low revs on the highway, its quite comfortable.

Greg, thanks for your detailed review!
I own a BMW R1200C "Chromehead". I LOVE it. I don't have the problems you described on the smaller 1200. My chief complaint though is the gearing, First gear is way too high (lots of feathering the clutch & covering the rear brake, if you don't want to zoom through the parking lot) & Fifth gear is Ok, but almost not high enough. For only 61HP, though, it's very Torquey, =)
I felt exactly the same when I sat on it as far as the clarence with my feet. I have a size 15 shoe and I'm 6' 5. A wee bit tight. I'd have to ride out a while. I still plan on going back to test ride it. they were closing soon and didn't have the time.
I'd get the Bagger for the adaptive cruise control. I have it on my car, it's brilliant. Saves your licence and a lot of stress. I'm confused about the heel shifter. I thought you'd use the front lever for up shifts and the heel for down shifts.
I've seen footrests that have a rest over the cylinder head and are attached the crash bars.
I'd give the Street Glide a test ride. Such a nice compact size, wheel base. I've had 2 Boxer BMWs.
Man thanks - I always wondered how it feels to ride. Guess I definitely love my R1250GS 😉
I agree, good video but I'll stick with my GS 1200.
I ride a newer Heritage, older Road Glide and the R18 Classic. The BMW is different but not annoying like you describe. The power delivery is excellent and build quality and materials are unmatched, especially for the price. Hiking boots don’t like the BMW.
I rode as a sweeper / tail end safety this summer at a BMW dealership ride event. Twice I rode the R1800 and yes it pulls left with vibration and I found my feet got hot 🔥 under the heads. Otherwise it's a love it or leave it kinda bike in my opinion. Their 1600 are butter smooth and very enjoyable. I didn't play with any slow riding skills as it was the first time the dealer and ride event people had met me.
I traded a Harley Street glide on the bagger and I absolutely love it. Having said that I also hated it on my first ride liked it a little more in the second ride and fell in love with it on the third ride the BMW likes to be driven a certain way it likes to shift lower RPM than you would think his natural. I solve the wind issue by putting winglets on the. The wind comes from coming under the fairing hitting your legs and bouncing up towards your neck
I totally agree with you. I also have a BMW R 18 bagger and I put winglets under the faring. Made a big difference.
I really like the newest review format. The highway piece is awesome as well as the parking lot and slow maneuver. Comparisons were dope too. Kewl reviews
I really like the look of the R18 so I've test driven them 3 different times and your assessment is spot on. I hated that unnerving jolt to the left when stating and the feeling you are going to scrape the huge cylinders when making an aggressive turn. The shifting and brake positions are problematic but the deal breaker for me is the vibration's. My 06 Road king has 77,000 miles and it gets smoother with acceleration. My 06 flst softail has over 100,000 miles and has been a pleasure to ride from day one.I ride a 85 super glide I've owned since new with 76,000 miles it has no balancer and is rigid mounted and is way smoother than that R18. Those R18 pistons should cancel vibration if they are set up 180 degrees. I suspect bmw set them up 182 degrees aprox to get the vibration that they believe Harley owners would like. Vibrations are kind of cool when your young but at 75 years old, not so much. Good review.
After riding this bike extensively, I found that the vibration and wind issues will drop off dramatically when riding below 20 MPH.
For the HD, make it 10 mph!
Thank you for talking about the vibration, and where you are feeling the vibration. I've only seen one other YT'er mention the vibration.
The vibration is mode dependent. I took one out on a test ride and had it in rock mode the whole time, it vibrated a lot. I didn't mind that for in town, but it's a no no on the highway. I took the bike out again and kept it in roll mode. The vibrations on the highway were nonexistent to me. I did lose the snappy throttle response from rock mode.
@@CactusJack252 vibration is a big deal to me as I’m very sensitive to it, but only high frequency vibes, i.e. the ones that numb hands and feet. Low frequency vibes, or shaking/throbbing/rumbling add power plant personally without inducing rider fatigue. Looking at the R1800 100 Year but unable to test ride one now due to snow so looking to a non biased opinion on which type of vibration you experienced; testers speak of vibration but never of the type. Your opinion would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, ride long, well, and safely. Cheers.
Greg discovers the joy of the boxer engine
pretty cool see you on a different bike every day. Go on!
Heel/toe shifters are made to up shift with your heel. The bike leans when you rev because the engine is in sideways. It's all something you get used to.
When I got my Guzzi V7, I had to go get different boots. My older ones won't fit properly under the shifter.
nice video. beautiful bike, came up on my feed since i was looking into them recently. That engine config seems goofy. plus mid-controls. nah i like my forwards on vtx1300R'05. been eyeing the HD SG for next year. for now i will mod my vtx up to a SG look. always enjoy your videos, bro. thanks.
Hi. Love your channel. I am experienced and my son is new to riding. We have learned so much from you. I recently had a bad accident on my road king classic and have had to shift to the Harley tri glide ultra. I would be interested in seeing your thoughts on this trike. Thanks again.
Gearing is pretty tall, overall. Makes it good for the wide open spaces.
Good news, it got 55 Mpg, which was identical to the Husky 701 Vitpilan single that was along for the same ride.
What speed were you riding at to get this 55mpg?
@@ThisGuyRates Average 70 mph. Our range was 60 to 80 Mph depending on the road and traffic.
I hope you review some top of the line gen 3 Zero's soon, like the SR/S, SR/F or the new DSR/X!
I just picked up the big one and I love it.
Good question: which engine/motor are more reliable and last you passing 100k miles, the Harley Vtwin or the BMW boxer? The reasons that I ask is every time that I go to a motorcycle museum the Harley's are leaking oil and they have a piece of cardboard or something underneath them, including recent models., and when I look the BMW's ,Moto Guzzi's, Ducati,s, Bimota,s, Benelli,s, MV Augusta,s etc etc, there is no sign of oil leaks. If any of you visit Los Angeles , California and go to the Petersen Auto Museum, I recommend to paid to see the Vault where the really expensive cars and motorcycles are., That's the last Museum that I went and I see Harley's leaking oil and a Customer Home in Beverly Hills in his garage has a few Harley's also leaking oil. Opinions any one?
There’s a difference between “vibration” and torque. The former buzzes everything while the latter makes it move sideways when blipping. But you know that. How many commenters here ever owned older boxers from the 60’s? They all vibrated but were considered “smooth” because they weren’t as bad as a Harley. Eventually all of them figured out ways to eliminate or substantially reduce those vibes. It seems in an effort to go retro (love the look), they reintroduced negatives from 50 years ago. The heavy discounts make it temping but they are giving them away for a reason.
"The heavy discounts make it tempting but they are giving them away for a reason." BMW can't compete even with better bikes, because of HD bigots who prefer that archaic junk on wheels.
Test drove 22’ R18 TC (Transcontinental) yesterday. Much of your comments are the same as my experience. The boxer cylinders so close to the rear break and shifter wasn’t confidence inspiring. I think my 2012 SG feels more nimble in the corners and faster off the line. Seems to me the TC would be best for someone who looking to chew up the miles on the Interstate. Thanks for the great video.
They should have just gone with the K1600 engine in this bike. I understand why they did what they did. But Harley people aren’t gonna jump ship.
Do they sell any cruisers today?
I'm glad the heel-toe shifter is adjustable. I hate using them. I liked it at first, but I felt more connected to the bike, doing it normally. If that makes sense. Just it just gave me that feeling of being in control and not lazy. That's just me. As somebody interested in this bike, I'm not sure how I would like it. Especially since I have big feet lol.
Keep making motorcycle Reviews. 👍
Nice honest review
A beautiful and magnificent piece of machinery 😎
Excellent review. I don't like the look of the cylinders sticking out of the side. They prevent you from stretching your legs out....which is important on long rides. Also, no crash bars. What happens if you drop the bike? I didn't realize the foot brake was also blocked by the engine.
Sometimes I rest my legs on the nice warm cylinders. The valve cover is great for breaking your fall, as long as you're not going so fast that the road burns a hole through it.
Crash bars and highway pegs can be added. The transcontinental have the crash bars from the factory
That's the whole point of BMW going back to their roots. I think it looks awesome . Harley baggers hide the cylinders behind all kinds of crap
That's some serious wheel barrow bars! Can you get some KST, Wild1 or FatBaggers or something on there? Or are you stuck with the OEM selection...
I so wanted to love this bike, I had the R18 classic for a weekend but took it back a day early. After 200km on the bike my back was broken, the suspension is terrible and the seat is so small.
Undeterred I test rode the bagger version, it is very heavy at low speeds with the fairing, wind buffeting is considerable, the seat is wider and more comfortable but the suspension is still poor.
This was like dating a supermodel, beautiful to look at, but will give you a hard life. Sorry BMW, a great effort aestheticly, stick to what you know.
I think the vibration is also related to ride mode. You get more in "rock".
Yes! The R 18s have three ride modes - Rock, Roll, and Rain - that alter throttle response, idle character, engine-drag torque control, and traction control intervention. Greg was in the Rock Mode which causes the torque-jerk and rougher vibrations.
I was told - AFTER the test ride - that the Rock mode was specifically aimed at the Harley fans, to mimick the rough idle of a Harley. If I'd known it before, I'd have switched to Roll mode. The rough idle reminded me of my 1977 Guzzi California with worn out carbs.
Hmm, it didn't come with the shift assist pro?
If a heel toe shifter is not your bag of donuts, you can probably raise the front of the shifter where it’s more comfortable to upshift normally…
Im looking at maybe getting one after years on the GS. Im watching the vid and thinking man it sure look like San Diego, paused and dang it says so right there. How cool.
I have have had the similar shifting issues, depending on which boot Im wearing, on a couple of diff GS Ive had. I find a way and get use to it with the taller boot. Also I understand you can remove the footboard. But your right it should be thoughtless.
I was good hear that you have own multi BMWs, that adds credence to you review. The wind issues causes me pause. I also have seen BMW has air deflectors as an option Anyways I enjoyed the enjoy the review.
test ride the new Yamaha FJR 1300 keen to see how you rate that beautiful machine
Noooo!! That vibration thing is not good. Neither the wind as after a while its just uncomfortable. The gear thing can be fixed by replacing the foot rest with normal round ones or lift the front bit, but sometimes the splines are machined with such angles, that the next position would make it too high. But these things are not cheap. For the price ..... it needs to be 100% right 'out of the box'.
Man, I’m debating getting an R18B and am looking up some reviews and of course mister Jutsu has made a video. Thanks buddy 🙏
Where are you Located? Sioux Falls Harley Davidson has a Low Mile R18B for around 16
@@galatians22122 the Netherlands 😂😂
But thanks for letting me know though!
Heel toe is much nicer shifting, and it doesn't scuff up the toe on your boots.
Thanks for the review. Although the riding position kills my knees sometimes, I much prefer the BMW R1200RT over this. Wind, low-non adjustable windshield, vibration, and all that chrome is a turn off for me. All BMW boxers torque like this Harley wannabe, but being 1800cc, the effect is probably accentuated.
Please try the Moto Guzzi V85 TT.
First major flaw is the cylinder heads near your feet, especially when it’s 100° out…
You’re guessing, I assume. I get no heat from the jugs at my feet. You can even place your hand on a cylinder after a ride and it’s just warm.
That’s how my Road King is. You get used to using the heal shifter
I am no brand loyalist by any means, I own or have owned just about everything to one degree or another. There is just nothing better than a Harley Bagger for this task. I jumped on my Street Glide ST and rode from TN to Michigan and back without hesitation. Any other bike I would have to be prepared for some pain including my R1250GS. There is nothing like a Street Glide or Road Glide on the freeway and they have soul. I take my Harley to the tail of the dragon and have a blast!
I love the looks of the version of this bike that doesn't have the bags or the fairing. The big fairing kills the retro classic looks especially.
Somehow, I don't think that the R18 being a "big vibrator" would be a problem for some riders...
I just bought one of these, i love it. However when i link my phone to it to play music, it wont let me skip songs unless i pull my phone out and do it from there. unless im doing it wrong.
happened to me, I asked for a firmware update at my first maintenance and it fixed it.
You want information on how this bike really rides ask someone who rode it for two years and 32000 miles, it's an amazing cruiser bike 4-700 a day. Not someone who just jumped on and went a few miles!!! Way less money than a new Harley and more reliable!
if all you ride is harleys, you will hate this bike. if you ride standards and are short (5'5") you will love this bike.
I bought one of the R18 Delux and vibration was fixed with some Grip padding and a Non-stock seat. Once I did that the bike it a wonderful ride.
Hi, what's brand for the non stock seat please ?
And where did u put the grip padding ? Got the issue at 2500 rpm :(
@@funlolo2870 Grip Puppies slide over your stock ones.
If you want smooth just select rain mode and the engine is like silk especially at speed and if you want it to rock select rock and guess what roll mode does.😮
It's a cruiser, not at 85 90 mph interstate touring bike. Maybe keep it on 2 lane roads and under 65 mph, short shift it, and it won't bother you with the vibrations. If you buy the bike, I am sure you can adjust the shifter further upwards so it works for you. There's a reason there's splines on the shaft for this purpose.
Mine LIVES for the road over 90mph. She shines
I ride a r 18 transmerica 2022. I had the same issue with the shifter. You should remove the back piece of the shifter and adjust up the front piece to have more room to handle it. In my opinion, this is a more reliable bike riding in hways at decent speed. I am happy with my BMW.
It’s a great riding bike. Even better than the classic. The forward part of the frame is stiffer. No, it’s not a Harley. It’s a BMW cruiser. The engine pulls hard as a 1800 and at a low rpm range so you shift earlier than usual in the lower rpm range. If your shifts are late and aggressive it will be vibey. The roctane also handles extremely well, even better than the classic will the larger front wheel. I had an ultra classic. If you are used to a big bike the weight isn’t a problem. The bikes are better than Harley’s because the equivalent options like modes, abs and traction control are only on the top tier touring bikes.
Complaints about things you quickly get used to. Complaining about the shifter position when it is designed to be adjustable. Complaints about the intrinsic character about the boxer engine… Why does different have to be bad? I do totally agree about the wind buffeting and air flow. That aspect of the bike sucks. I prefer the base model with no screen.
…and the vibrator is a feature, not a bug.
I'd love to get ur opinion on a chieftain.
I have the TC and the vibration you are speaking of (the unfun version) pretty much disappears on Roll mode, versus Rock. But, Rock is more spirited on twisties. You are correct about the shifter but I have large boots and can get under it to pull up. The sideways torq of the engine is an interesting querk and adds to the character.
I’ve heard the shifter can be adjusted to fix that issue
Thank you for your comment. I am seriously considering buying one and you cleared up a lot of my questions.
Actually, I did the “harley thing” and bought a taller seat(the option 719) instead of messing with the shifter. It’s near perfect now. I have been riding my TC a lot these days and I am loving it more and more.
Only a dork and jerk says torq and querk.
It takes about TWO MINUTES to adjust the shift lever to your liking. You should've done that before your ride. Wind. You are right, the stock shield puts wind right in your face, so I bought the tall windshield that is on the Transcontinental, and it is MUCH better. As for vibration, it does feel a bit buzzy, but I ride without gloves (because I don't plan on crashing, lol). With those astronaut gloves you wear, I'm surprised you can feel anything. Maybe loosen up the chokehold on the grips a little, lol. Just a bit of feedback from an R18B owner with only 2000 miles on it.
Those big crash guards sticking out sure are nice
So if the choice was HD or Beemer or Goldwing, which one?
Moto Guzzi
@@savage22bolt32 no wonder you did well at school - thinking outside the box! lol
Obviously your not a Harley guy. We love the heel toe shifter.
I have owned 6 HD’s and bought a First Edition R18. I find it smoother and more solid on the road than any of my Harleys were. I don’t agree with this assessment of vibrations. Very little on my bike! The R18 is a much better standard spec for the money and has much more grunt and torque than a standard HD model (114, 117). Check out other reviews of the R18 and most agree with me.
it's a beautiful bike; however, b/t the vibration, wind and shifting clearance issues, I wouldn't consider owning it.
HD vibrates more!
Some Guys belive everything......
The Street Glide is literally $10,000 more than the R18B.
The gearshift is 6 down, it’s a cruiser thing. I’ve got 10,000 klms on my Classic, I don’t know how you can review unless you’ve done 1,000 klms at least. Heel/Toe shifters are relaxing, ask around. Apart from you putting shit on my bike, I don’t mind your channel. Ride safe. 😎
I bought one bike with forward controls, never again, hard on my back and harder to control in a panic stop!
Supposedly 35 degrees of lean?
You don't need to put your foot under the peg it have a heal toe shifter
There are so many different bikes, designed for so many different purposes.
Figure out what you want to do, then figure out what bike fits your expectations.
This is a cool bike, but I don't really have a place in my stable for it.
Edit #1, I already have one BMW.
Edit #2, No matter what you buy, you can acclimate yourself to it's idiosyncrasies.
Amen Brother!!!
I'll take the Yamaha fjr 1300 over the BMW R18 any day. The fjr is far more comfortable and feels a lot more responsive. You can stretch your legs on the fjr. And I think the Yamaha is more reliable. But the valves on the BMW are far easier to adjust. It's easier to reach the hand grips on the fjr. But a handle bar riser might cure that. The fjr feels more quality to me. It doesn't look like a Harley cruiser but is just as comfortable for half the price.
Hey MotoJitsu I also noticed that guy not wearing gloves in the Video. It seems like more and more people are not wearing them these days. Is this some new trend or something? To each his own but man its like everyone got together and took their gloves off one day.
I would consider this bike with dual clutch transmission.
What about what YTube did?
The wind is probably coming from under the fairing
Perfect timing. The transcontinental model has all the bells and whistles with some serious rebates for the 2022. Tempting but….. that engine is in my way and the kick to the left 👎🏽
Lefties are def not wanted.
Our Harley-Davidson’s have that shifter…. Well, except for my husbands Road King. He took his off.
It also was half the price of a Harley Street glide special
I ditched my Milwaukee stuff after getting a long flat twin
No 2 parking spots with this one eh?
You'd pick the harley SGS ST over the BMW R18 but would you pick the Indian Chieftain DH over them all?
Between 2000 and 3000 RPM Buttery Smooth and you will spend 95% of your riding in this range. Who Cares if it has some vibration for a few seconds above 3000 RPM!
look at the shifter in the naked version time mark 21:20
It seems someone like this but 1200 is coming soon
I just couldn't put up with all that dashboard in front of me, it looks like a massive blind spot, I prefer the naked version, never seen the appeal of these baggers.
I rode that BMW in Daytona last year. It's as uncomfortable as it is ugly. To each his own I guess but it was really impractical. On the other hand, I'm really loving your new bike review videos though! Keep up the great work!
HD bigot.
Everything about this bike is wrong.
Also BMW known for very expensive parts.
Big NO for me
“Where’s your gloves bro? I guess you don’t plan on crashing.” Lol, I do this all the time to everyone stopped at the lights.
San Diego!!
Since when do you have to see the brake and shifter. I can’t ever remember looking down at either in 50 years of motorcycle riding.
ok man - do a Suzuki Boulevard M109R
As with the old version 100 years ago. Go check History of this model..
