My Husband is also a Veteran. Took him awhile to integrate back into normal society after 21yrs. 1997-2018. The reason he joined was to provide for a Daughter he had coming, and growing up poor, he really had no other good options. He has been to Iraq, Afghanistan, but that's all he really says. He gave ALL of his uniforms, medals, and letters from her Mother, to his Daughter. He very rarely talks of any of it.

As a 5 time combat retired veteran, the things we have to do weighs on us heavily but what we can't understand is how 1 second you can be sitting there joking with your buddy, the next they are gone, and we wonder why we survived it. Survivors guilt is what really gets to us because in our minds, it's not fair and we think we aren't good enough for their sacrifice and would rather it have been us. Thanks for your respect and to all my brothers and sisters, I love you so much!

Thank you to your father for his service! It is a source of great pride for any of us that come from military families or those who have served. I have said before and I will say here, being handed that folded flag is an experience no family should ever experience. For those of us who have risked coming home beneath the flag, we take it very personal when anyone disrespects that flag. This song and video hit me incredibly hard as I actually lost one of my best friends to suicide after they served. It is such an incredible sacrifice they make to keep us safe and they tolls it takes do not go away easily.

Its interesting how the video shows so much about what happened to the one soldier.
How friends he had good times with, and he joined the service together with the same purpose in mind.
How all but him were killed in the convoy, and how much it was destroying him.
Then his realization that he get either keep feeling bad all the time, or he could stand back up and go back to the war he and his friends were in ...and keep fighting the battle they all pledged to each other and our country to fight.
When looking at the end of tut he video he gets out of the vehicle as we see some new recruits...
...very young men in the service.
It eludes to him being a seasoned soldier who will be helping the younger soldiers in ways only a seasoned combat soldier can.
The seriousness on his face, and the fear on theirs.
It's as if he was meant to go back to train them better on the battlefield, and be a mentor...not only a commander.
One might also(if one is religiously minded) note that it gives a renewal of spirit for him to return to finish what he and his friends went to fight for.
The video has quite a bit of forethought to it.
    Very well written and performed.

As a former combat medic, and veteran in the second gulf war this song hits really close to home. I still struggle with thoughts of self destruction. I still struggle with substance abuse. I cry at times when it's inappropriate. I still seek pain and penance for the sins I committed. When you have time and distance you realize you weren't human then. You were an animal. Driven solely by survival. And you did what it took. But that makes it no easier I still seek pain...I still seek numbness, I still seek an end to it all. I go to therapy a few times a week. And you know you have guilt. You lived and they died. You have to fight for your place to live every fucking day. It's not easy.

The big reason they do these videos and speak up about the issues veterans face is because the lead singer Ivan Moodey was in the Marines himself, so he has seen this first hand. They not only send out a powerful message but also donate a lot of their proceeds to veteran organizations. Great respect for them as a band and big respect to all the veterans.

You cannot imagine the trauma we, who survived, go thru everyday. Some of my parts left in Iraq, and brothers.. it's what's left over we vets have to deal with. Navy medic, 100% rated because of my injuries. 15 surgeries later, and least I can walk without a wheelchair.. Thanks for this.

Thank you Aileen for your honest words and showing these types of videos. I am a Vet. I never stepped foot in a war zone. I was in the Navy conducting intelligence collection by listening to communications of our own troops. The job was to find possible ways our enemies could get info from our own force communications. That being said, I listened to communications that would horrify people. I have been suicidal. I now have PTSD where all those voices just start going off in my head. I honestly would not change anything I have done because I believe I was doing what was right. As I write this comment, I have tears running down my cheeks. I am so grateful for people like you making sure our communities know what Vet's go through and are going through. Thank you Aileen and most importantly "Thank you to your Father for his service".

This song has gotten me through so much. One of the things I love about music is that it isn't limited when it comes to what you can apply the message/lyrics etc. to. For me personally I haven't lost anyone who was deployed or anything like that, but this song helped/still helps me deal with my cousin's death (along with too many others). He was exactly two months younger than me and struggled with addiction like I did. A few years ago he went into a coma that he never woke up from he passed about a month or so later. He had a son with an ex who was about 3 at the time and at the funeral I was sitting closer to the back with my parents and his son who was with the mother was standing in the back behind all of the pews. I heard his son asking the mother "Where is dad? I want to play with dad." it broke my heart that this little boy is now going to have to grow up without his father. I struggle with survivors guilt because of this and the line "Please let me trade, I would" is something that I relate to, if not for my cousin's sake but for that little boy.
    R.I.P. Anthony M. 03/13/1991-02/07/2019 Love you cus.
A couple quick points of information:
It was never said what caused him to go into the coma, at least not to extended family, and we didn't ask
He seemed to be doing fine the last I had heard before he went into the coma, that being said he struggled on and off with relapse so who knows

As a vet of a bunch of combat tours, thank you. Your reaction was heartfelt, and, well, good to watch. As for the video, one thing that gets me, that I’ve never heard commented upon, is the metal bracelets the surviving character is wearing at the end of the video. They’re Memorial Bands, one band for each of his lost friends. The fact that he’s wearing 3 of them is significant, and the video does it right by showing the Soldiers immediately react to them. Finally, thank you for your concern about our treatment back in society. Honestly, I’ve been genuinely thanked more times than I can count. Personally, I feel there comes a point where the burden is on us to figure out how to share our experiences with those we love. Thank you!
