- Jack Black. Meat Loaf. Ronnie James Dio. Tenacious D. How have I never heard about this?! I wanted to find the best way to tribute Meat Loaf's passing, and thought no better way to welcome him into the afterlife than Dio. This is the opening song to "The Pick of Destiny" by Tenacious D, and it absolutely rocked my socks off!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Meat Loaf, Dio and Tenacious D performing "Kickapoo”.

Hello everyone! I can't believe the success of this video in the first day... it's insane. Thank you for coming to watch this Tribute! (see what I did there?)
I would LOVE to film myself watching The Pick of Destiny for you all, as many requests down below have stated, but I unfortunately can't. There's a lot of filming and projects that I work on, that sometimes I need that buffer between that active listening for analysis videos and enjoyment, and watching this movie falls directly into the enjoyment category. Especially while pregnant, I need ways to turn work off in my head.
I'm really sorry. I know you all would want to see my explosion of laughter at certain parts of the film, but I have to care for my mental health the best I can.
Thank you all for understanding, and thank you once again for supporting Meat Loaf, Dio, Tenacious D and this channel!
With much love,
Elizabeth
You'll love the movie, everyone needs time away from work - you work so you can live and enjoy life not live so you can work so no apologies needed to anyone. Enjoy
You don't need to apologize, you do enough for us already. Watch the movie and enjoy it. Thank you for all your work.
There is just so much to love in this particular mashup of brilliant talents. Kudos to Jack and cage for making this brilliant alignment of the Stars a reality. Totally off topic but since I may have your eyes... Is there a reason you have not had Melissa Cross on is a guest yet? It seems a shoo-in given where you've been taking the channel in terms of appreciation for all styles of vocals.
Me and my friend are metal heads and apparently both of us found you independently of each other and we love your channel. You are adorable and great!
@@lightdampsweetenough2065 Thank you so much! I hope I provide enough for both of you to enjoy. ;-)
I love how the kid is literally how I imagine a young Jack Black to be.
Yeah they found a great kid to play him. Fun fact though there’s an old commercial for the game pitfall that he’s actually in. It was his first acting role
This is Barry from The Goldbergs
I wonder how much work was put into the kid mimicking Black's reactions and mannerisms. He sells being Jack Black very well with the facial expressions alone - especially the eyes and eyebrows.
For me, It's between that kid and Dave Grohl's Devil for best overall acting performance in this film
It’s perfect!! Lol
That kid needs credit for how well he can imitate Jack Black's mannerisms and facial expressions
JB does give the boy mega props if you listen to the commentary for the movie.

@@kendarr on the dvd
@@Lamont15 thx!

I love how Meatloaf's verse and Dio's verse both perfectly fit their musical style.
I'd say all of the musicians in this have their styles represented well. Even Dave Grohl 's as Satan
rip
@@SirBigWater YESS!! Dio and Meatloaf get a lot of love, and so does Jack & Kyle, but man Dave I don't feel gets enough love for his part as Satan.
@@soulessshadow5356 it's honestly probably because almost nobody but the diehard fans even know it is him.
@@williameldridge9382 Everyone knows it's him by this point
"FORM A STRONG ALLIANCE" the way he delivers that phrase is metal as hell.
I mean the man arguably invented delivering lines in a metal kind, way back with rainbow. When Sabbath were still bluesing around with Ozzy, Dio was fucking telling us about fucking wizards building towers and shit. When I think metal ass diction I hear Dio in my head.
@@ithemba lol, true. dio invented and perfected the "metal as hell" delivery.
@@ithembaDior’s voice definitely invented that style of metal voice. But I much prefer growls and snarls instead of singing and I also ozzy’s Black Sabbath. When dio joined it just became boring to me
RIP Dio. He was indeed metal as hell.
It’s so depressing how CRIMINALLY underrated Jack Black is. Not only Jack Black’s voice, but Kyle Gass’s guitar skills, Tenacious D as a band and The Pick Of Destiny as a rock film
What's crazy is people know Jack black as an actor rather than from his music. And yes one of the best voices to ever be. And Kyle Gass graduated from the school of Juilliard at a relatively young age. Amazing guitarist
I think jack black is plenty famous, but you’re right, Kyle gass’s guitar skills and how underrated POD is TRULY should be criminal.
@@six66string I just meant that, relative to how good Jack’s voice is, I don’t think enough people know about / acknowledge it 👍
@@DanielLee1 yeah I agree with that
It's the same as be kind rewind, his genius is destined for cult classic status
Fun fact: Dio's verse only took him one take. Imagine making a movie about your band and Dio accepts to participate in it. I would die from my happiness!
I love that he actually asked if they wanted another round coz he wasn't happy with part of it, and Jack was just nah you're good
Not only that, he'd heard Tenacious D's song "Dio" like a decade beforehand and said something to the effect of "who the fuck are these guys? Yeah... Not passing my crown and scepter anytime soon." So the D were huge fans, annoyed their idol with a song about how he's getting too old and how they're putting him in a nursing home, and then their idol wound up being cool in the long run and did a cameo in their move.
There's a video on YT of Dio recording his part and at one point one of the guys listening drops to the floor haha which is obviously the appropriate reaction. SO COOL Surely a dream for the guys!
He's just a man. Nothing more, nothing less.
Bruh imagine getting pumped for a day of recording with dio, just for him to wrap it up in a quick 10 minute set.
It’s so weird watching MeatLoaf essentially portrait his own father in this movie. Very smart casting choice.
yep....from all reports, his Dad expected ML to be a pro footballer !
Jack Black had always wanted Meat Loaf to play as his dad everytime. He told Meat Loaf about it over & over.
RIP Loaf
I hope it was cathartic for him.
I knew that was him ❤️😆
To have 2 (now deceased) rock legends in this song gives this a lot more weight in the history of music than I think it was initially intended for
Way to miss the point completely 👍
"I think we just need to take a moment to appreciate Jack Black's voice." - Truer words were never spoken.
People are so dismissive of Tenacious D because they're a comedy act, especially nowadays as their main moment of cultural relevance is sadly past. But Jack Black and Kyle Gass are genuinely solid musicians, and "comedy act" or not, Tenacious D comes from a place of such deep love and respect from both of them towards the music of the 60s/70s that changed their lives and shaped who they are.
They are the best band in the world
He was the bloke that got me into rock :)
@@adamhoisington9761 The greatest and best band in the world!

Jack Black is a sort of modern day bard in his ability to convey a story through song. He's definitely the kind of guy you imagine singing you into battle.
I'm game. Onward noble steed!
@@spddracer galloping into battle and from behind yo hear calls of
'Riga-googoo rigagoogoo!'
Every now and then he busts out a Dio cover on live tv. it's so good.
Astute observation.
He's the kind of guy you want to play an RPG with either tabletop or MMORPG.
Not only did Dio shred their mic, he then did this in 1 take on his mic. Fuckin legend. He was 64 and still singing with this much power.
Im pretty sure there is at least another take, it sounds very similar but not exactly the same. It was on yt lve no idea if still exists
Voice of a true Lord of metal 🤘
@@flparg2 yeah, he did one take with the studio microphone, then he did another take with his own mic
And then went on to do an EPIC reunion album and tour with Sabbath under the name "Heaven and Hell"
The problem with JB is the same problem Bo Burnham, Psychostick, and related artists, is that people don't look at them with nearly as much respect as they should because they are also comedy musicians. But that makes it MORE impressive, because these are all incredibly talented artists
not just them, Tim Minchin as well. and the dude managed to get nominated for a handful of tonys as well for 2 incredibly successfull plays.
in my opinion it is way more impressive that the songs they make can make you laugh smile and be amazed at the vocal talent they are true bards
I only discovered Psychostick about a year ago. NSFW still makes me laugh. But I can't believe that they don't have more exposure, their songs are on the same level as non-comedy bands.
Don’t forget Stephen Lynch. Amazing voice control and his stage presence and facial expressions are top notch in the comedy music game.
The Italian Band Nanowar of Steel. Amazing Musicians.
The pick of destiny is such a brilliant movie, this song really sets up the story brilliantly and who better to start it than three great styles of singing in Jack Black, Dio and Meat Loaf.
May he rest in Rock Heaven..😪
do not foregt the awesome performance of Dave Grohl as the himself 🙂 lets see if you recognize him 🙂
@@TheNarvaine and he played the same character in Tribute, as well as in the HBO series, although I am not 100% on the last one.

I made a bunch of friends and made them watch, too. 😆
Let’s take a dip in the stwawbewwy wivver
Fun Fact: For this film, production actually travelled back in time so they could cast young Jack Black as Young Jack Black just to add to the film's unprecedented realism.
I always him pegged for an adolescent Dragon f*****
Young Jack Black in this scene is literally Barry Goldberg from the tv show The Goldbergs. He looks absolutely nothing like jack black now btw
I fact checked this time travel info. Totally checks out.
@@bradlyblitzkreig8048 Hopefully with consent...
Don’t forget they actually found Sasquatch for the purposes of making the film more realistic
One little detail i've always loved is that Meatloaf's section ends up really mirroring Young JB's in the rhythm. To me it's always represented a sort of...truth that the characters are more alike than either would like to admit. And reflecting some of rock's beginnings in gospel music.
Can we just, sit down and appreciate how positive this channel is? I am always in a good mood after a video from Elizabeth.
I agree! Same thing happens when I watch Harry Mack. Positive and infectious energy!
I have no idea how known this fact is, but: "Dio" literally means "God" in Italian. As an Italian, the moment when the father tells him to praise the Lord and he praises Dio instead kills me every time
How did I not realize this until now?
Wow!!! I love it!! I’d love to be Italian when I watched it the first time 🔥
Haha, I had never made that connection to Meat Loaf's last line before
Ciao

Fun fact: Dio did his part in one take. Perfection.
Wendy Dio said in an interview that they did one practice take, then one take for the record.
There is a videoclip going around with JB watching Dio at the studio when he was recording his part. You can see JB's brain explode when he understands the level of Dio's excellence in person... You can feel the goosebumps through everybody present during that moment...
ua-cam.com/video/G4YgA0mSF0Q/v-deo.html
Look at the guy just falling to the ground, and how JB is just bowing his head... What a moment...
You can watch it here... watch?v=G4YgA0mSF0Q I love it JB's face on the 2nd verse and how Dio asks "Another one?" at the end and everyone's like "no!!!"
@@GreekHighlander o never saw JB speachless like this!
I just can't stop smiling at how adorable it is to watch a professional opera singer totally fangirling (probably not a word) over JB. It makes the dumpster fire that the world is at the moment feel like a much nicer place 😊 also just fyi the kid playing the young JB also played his younger self in Nacho libre
The world has always been a dumpster fire bro.
Almost like Billy Joel made a song about it or something
He was great in Nacho!
The thing that I've always really liked about Meatloaf's part in this movie, is often Meatloaf's most popular songs are about the drama and freedom of being a teenager, but this time he is on the opposite side as a restrictive and high-strung parent while maintaining that same Steinman-esque style.
I agree. The irony is delicious , the casting as his father a MASTERstroke.
But the scene also incorporates his early “Never Gonna be as Heavy as Jesus” days
Kickapoo 🤟🏻How they squeezed so many huge personalities into one song is Amazing. Long live The D
They even got Dave Grohl back, Ben Stiller, and a few others. PoD was far better than people gave it credit for when it came out.
It's pretty incredible, but. Meat Loaf had been performing on and off Broadway for years and had such experience. That and his acting talent is just utter gold. That coupled with Dio, it's just unforgettable. I watched this video another 3 times after filming it.
@@TheCharismaticVoice Should watch some Rocky Horror Picture Show if you haven't seen those. Possibly Meat Loaf at his best.

Master Exploder is another great song from the Pick of Destiny. Killer vocals.
I do not need a microphone 🤣
My voice is fuckin, POWERFULLLL!!
The Master Exploder scene also has a cute reference to the story about Dio's voice being too much for the studio mic, when JB sets the microphone on fire with his voice :D
I did not mean to blow your mind...
But that shit happen to me...
According to Jack Black DIO brought his own mic to record his part of this song and the engineers wanted to use their top of the line mics they used 3 different 1s and DIO's voice was so powerful he overpowered them with the levels turned all the way down and DIO said that's why he brought his own mic
incredible. and yet completely believable because it's him
When a legend such as Dio walks in with his OWN mic…the engineers should say there must be a reason and let him do his thing!
The kickapoo video always brings me nothing but pure joy. Every single performance is staggeringly perfect, and Liam lynch is an incredible director

As a film, The Pick of Destiny has no right being as freaking good as it actually is. It is steeped in rock folklore and inside jokes, their attention to detail with the bits of History they divulge among the whispered inner secrets of legendary guitar players and how they achieved said Mastery... It's really a good time. I bet you will enjoy it very very much.
I mean that's it really. The film should have been terrible and it somehow became a cult classic.
The film "Suck" is also a great rock film with great songs and guests.

The funniest thing about the movie is that meatloaf was 100% right about rock being from the devil according to the movie
I just realized that Dio's line "through the valley you must walk" could actually be the San Fernando Valley just north of Hollywood. Except JB ends up getting to Hollywood from the opposite side.
"We need to take a moment to appreciate Jack Blacks' voice" you said it! I feel he is underrated because comedy in music isnt taken seriously. I wish he did MORE with his gift. Love me some TD.
i keep telling people that if he tried making not comedy music he would be a legend, but he carved his own legend anyway. look at some of his impromptu singing, he joins a street performer and just jams with him
Fun fact: the kid who played Young JB was so good at being Jack Black that they cast him as Young Ignacio in Nacho Libre a few years later
Also: just subscribed! ROCK ON 🤘
He’s on the Goldbergs now
Nacho Libre and Pick of Destiny came out the same year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they grabbed him for one based on the other but the timeline is a little different.
Another fun fact, the kid is the older brother on the Goldbergs.
@@johnwhitelaw4608 damn, I've seen that show a lot and never picked up on that

Can we appreciate how Jack Black was able to get both Meat Loaf AND Dio in the movie? Not to mention having Dave Grohl play the devil at the end.
It was easy to get Dave Grohl to play the Devil. They just asked him to take off his Dave Grohl make-up....
did you know? In school, Jack black used to tell people Meatloaf was his father
Dave Grohl was just returning the favor for Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly 😁
Reprising his role from Tribute
I definitely grew up with the "Rock is not the devil's work, it's magical and rad" mindset. My dad's favorite bands were Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd. He always encouraged me to turn the volume up and I still love those moments with him.
Def Leppard and Queen were great as well as Elton John
Don’t know if it’s mentioned anywhere else, but this is the first movie since Rocky Horror that Meatloaf sang in. He wanted to be appreciated as an actor in films. Not just a singer.
Fight Club he was great in
I honestly think Jack Black is one of the most underrated singers of all time.
People just look at him as a comedian and don't realize how good his voice is. His range is impressive.
He sang into my face three years ago, and I can say, those pipes are real. This man would probably be considered one of the greatest rock vocalists of our time, if people wouldn't just see the clown.
I absolutely agree
I think Jack is an amazing singer. Truly. I hope I get to talk with him someday.
Easily
This was Meatloaf’s first time singing in a movie since RHPS. He was a powerhouse. And that kid…I’m not completely convinced they didn’t invent time travel to grab Jack Black as a child cause that’s him. No doubt.
If I'm not mistaken that kid went on to be in Nacho Libre and played Barry Goldberg in The Goldbergs on TV...his name is Troy Gentile.

But they already are
Just realized I hadn’t seen this since Meat Loaf and Dio died 😢 also it’s really awesome that with your extensive classical/institutional music background you treat all music as valuable. It adds legitimacy to these often neglected genres.

I get chills everytime I watch the part where Dio goes “now go my son and rock!!!!!”
That part was magical and rad.
I always want him to be taking directly to me. I love my actual father to death, but Dio is my metal soul daddy.
Dio has rocked for a long, long time,
Now it's time for him to pass the torch...
Seeing the love and passion you have for music in your expressions is amazing. A lot of respect. You love music, I'm on your side. I respect your opinions, a coach or not, accurate. In the party zone, keep it real! And keep on!
absolutely love Tenacious D and absolutely love your analysis of this song! awesome!!
First, Jack Black is severely underrated. Second, that little boy is killing it, he's funny and looks just like I imagine Jack Black would. Finally, RIP Meatloaf. 🌹
Jack Black is a pretty under-rated singer. Everybody thinks he's just funny, but he actually has an awesome voice too!
Who underrates Jack Black? Has anyone knocked his singing?
@@azimuth361 Exactly. It's not that he's under-rated. More so under-appreciated is all.
Even his guitar playing is amazing
I grew up with Ronnie James Dio through my dad, he was almost my first concert ever. He is and always be my favourite singer, especially being a smaller guy myself like Dio it gives me hope that even tho I might be small, my voice can have great impact.
Rest In Peace Ronnie James Dio
I was today year's old when I realized that it was actually Meatloaf playing JB's father. And by the way, I really like your videos, how you make a break down not only of the voice, but of the overall content. Keep it up, this is awesome! And you're awesome for creating such wonderful videos!
"But to learn the ancient method, sacred doors you most unlock." Yes, a rock/metal singer can learn a lot from Dio, and Dio learned from greats like Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza, and Ray Charles.
In a former D&D campaign, my character was a Metal bard, or as they called themselfs "Iron Wailers".
He was called Ronnie Osborn, and he was from the town of Ditchapoo, from a family of Clerics, but he saw a vision of Wootan(Odin's other name) that told him that he had to go and find the Pick of destiny, if he wanted to escapes his family's religious clutch.
6lvl of Lore bard and 3 levels of Infernal Warlock with a Imp familliar named "Kyle".
You're doing Metal's work, son.
/salute
I love you and your enthusiasm. Thank you for the videos!
Both Meatloaf and Dio’s entrances are so amazing. Just, perfect!
Toward the end of Dio's verse, when he sings "You will face your inner demons" a flash of Murray's eyes appears behind him. Murray is the demon-mascot for Dio's band that appeared on several of his album covers.
RIP Meat Loaf. I recall one interview I saw of his where he was talking about auditioning for Rocky Horror. They told him that the song is really fast so just try to get all the words in as best you can; everybody else had just been sliding the lyrics together in audition. Meat listens to it and says to himself Well I can do this! Then he sings it clear as day like it was nothing and gets the part.
Hot patootie- bless his soul, he really loved his rock& roll!
and he's also throwing up horns, in the gesture that he popularized \m/
My voice isn't as grand as Meat Loaf's, but I can sing "Whatever Happened to Saturday Night" a bit faster than he could. Not bragging. Just thought I'd mention it.
That kid deserves an actual Award for beeing a literal tiny JB.... great Job little man
Just found your channel and it really is magical and rad, now I have hours of content to enjoy, thank you!
Dio and Meatloaf STILL sound amazing! Jack always sounds incredible. Love Tenacious D!! This was my favorite reaction video of yours so far! Even better than "Tribute" and I didn't think one could top that. 🤘🏻🤘🏻❤❤
Dio already had Stomach Cancer at this time. Yet his voice never weakened. He loved doing what he did so much, that he toured while incredibly ill with stomach cancer. Dio's Passion is something that couldn't be weighed.
RIP Meat Loaf what an awesome singer and artist
And Dio
I absolutely love seeing you react to this. Watched this as a young teen and fell in love with the style of this movie. Only musical I can say I watched at least 10 times haha. The soundtrack is amazing on it.
I've watched a few of you'r videos so far and i can say confidently that u have a new fan in me and a huge one for ❤️ keep up the great work 🙏🏾
Dio singing "in the city of fallen angles, where the ocean meets the sand" is perfectly engraved into my brain haha it's so great!
I know right, absolute classic line
you will form a STRAWNG ALLIANCE, and the world's most AWESOME BAND!
Straight up man, It's so powerful.
Fun fact: The bat Meatloaf knocks down is from his “Bat Out of Hell” Album
Because they originally had a meatloaf bat out of hell poster for him to rip down but he wouldn't so the bat was a compromise.
Just stumbled on this. I love your energy so much!!
huge props from a fellow Tenacious D fan. They rock unashamedly. And I just noticed, love your hair, the two tone look is amazing.
Fun fact about this one as well. Dio nailed his part in one take! They had a special features where they showed him in studio and he crushed it like the legend he is!
Wow. It's almost like you didn't even watch the video
@Schwanzmajor I think people mean that Dio did only 1 take for each part of the song, but not 1 straight take.
I stumbled across your channel today. It is so positive and fun to watch your videos. Awesome stuff!
Awesome break down and observations.
I've been on a Tenacious D kick lately, and you wound up in my suggestions with this reaction.
So I took a look at your channel after watching this, and subbed.
Looking forward to explore here. 😊
I have no idea why but when Dio starts to sign in this song on a tear comes to my eyes. And now that Meatloaf is gone I will cherish this song even more. The combination of these three voices made for an epic song. I don't think we will see something like this ever again. Glad you watched and enjoyed this. The movie is awesome and there are some great performances and cameos throughout.
I get chills every time. Its crazy because I have heard this song a thousand times and it gets me every time. RIP Dio
Tears here as well! What a legend.
I saw them last September. JB and KG were amazing! They're just as good live as they are on recording. Loved it
Came here for the Dio part. Wasn't disappointed. His voice is something we won't see for a long time. RIP holy diver
Just saw Elizabeth sing opera for the fist time. Not my kind of music but have to say really impressive. I had no idea.
Thank you!
@@TheCharismaticVoice This movie is highly The Who's Opera Rock influencied, such that it's got many references on them. It plays "Won't get fooled again" at its climax. Roger Daltrey is great singer to be analysed as well.
I agree, Elizabeth is awesome! I started really appreciating Opera more once I got into old Nightwish years ago, and so many metal singers(especially female) mention how influenced they are by Opera..........
Elizabeth starting: I sing opera and classical
2022: wearing a spike belt and laughing hysterically.
The glo up is real y’all 👏
God i love watching your videos.... I can sing every word of this song and Tenacious D has been one of my favorites for YEARS, but because I know nothing about singing (just music in general, I play drums lol) I learn SO MUCH watching you even if it's a song I've listened to literally 1000 times... Like I have enough music knowledge to understand everything you're saying and it's ALL new info
You rules!!! i love the way you reveals the magic behind the music! Greats from Argentina.
OMG you're our hero for doing this!! 🤘🖤
YAY!
The part where RJD throws the Goblet makes me laugh every time. RIP Ronnie and Meat
OMG! I never noticed that, I was just paying attention to his face!!
I just noticed here (after 16 years of listening to this amazing song) that you can actually hear it crashing on the ground lol
Also when he sings "In the city of fallen angels..." the angels that fall in the background are the same ones from the cover of the "Heaven and Hell" Black Sabbath album
Yep, they even added a "clang" sound, lol
DIO HAS ROCKED FOR A LONG LONG TIME
BUT NOW IT'S TIME TO PASS THE TORCH
I grew up in the 80's with Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Meatloaf, Dio, Van Halen, White Snake, Slayer, etc. Rock/Heavy Metal was considered devil's music, which is probably what appealed to me during my rebellion years. But man did I fall in love with it. So many classics that bring back memories and emotions.
It's a fun story based on a real band and its members. I JUST LOVE how Tenacious D can tell a story like no other
100% real true events.
I'd love to see you interview Wendy Dio. She's extremely passionate about keeping Ronnie's legacy alive, and has a ton of interesting stories to tell about his life.
1000x this!!!
