    The 50A setting, well I don't know what it actually puts out and I've had a similar Schumacher charger with the same settings, and whatever it puts out, the significant thing is that it's a battery start charge. You can hook it up to a weak battery, set it to that setting and start the car in a few seconds (you'll have to run the car to fully charge the battery at that point), or you can hook it up to a pretty much dead battery (as long as it's not damaged) and wait about 5 minutes and you'll be able to start the car. With a few minutes of patience it basically lets you jump the car, quite a useful feature.

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  3 роки тому +2

      It give 50a until the internal circuit trips, which is about 2 seconds, so if the car can start in that 2 seconds, it works, I thinks is a limited use feature, newer cars might start that fast, but most slightly older cars will not

      the green light comes on when charged is full on 10 and 2 - used the 50 amp to jump my trunk once, but I did not notice what the light did when the truck started, I use this on our scooter batteries, jump my truck, and charge neighbors car battery when it goes dead - with covid a lot of people do not use their cars enough to keep the battery charged - thanks for subscribing!

    When plug in nothing comes on. Multimeter doesn't register any volts from the charger itself. So the problem is?

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  2 роки тому

      it has a safety that will not allow it to come until it senses voltage from a connected battery that needs charged, this is to protect the charger and the user from a dead short if the clamps were to touch - a dead short at 2/10/50 would fry the charger, and could seriously hurt someone - I thought I covered this in the video, I'll have to post an update video covering that function - if you are charging a completely dead battery, you can hook another battery in parallel with the dead battery to charge the dead battery - thanks for subscribing!

    Should it make a humming noise while plugged in?

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  2 роки тому

      mine does, and a lot of them do, any device that steps up or down voltage can hum, and the bigger the step up/down, the more likely and loudly they hum - this charger step the voltage from roughly 110v ac to roughly 12v dc - there are ways to change the design to eliminate the hum, the cost is rarely worth it, because they work just as well with or without the hum - to test this, find a power company transformer that is ground mounted, most of those have a loud hum, (pole mounted are just as likely to hum) - if they are humming, odds are its giving off stray RF that can be heard on radios - in summary - the hum does not impact performance - thanks for subscribing

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  2 роки тому +1

      @@jubilee2343 its very normal to see sparks when you first hook it up, same thing when you plug something in to an outlet in your house, the speed you connect will after the sparks, faster is better, but overall, impossible to eliminate - that is a sign the battery has enough voltage for the charger to 'see' the battery and charge it, the charger will only charge a battery that has a minimum charge, this is a safety measure, otherwise anytime the two clamps touched there would a LOT of sparks

    It's always better to charge a lead-acid battery at 0.1C (multiply the C rate times the Ah rating of battery) or lower. For example the battery you have there is a 35Ah battery and the ideal charge rate is 3.5 amps or lower. You are always better off not using high amperage boost modes unless absolutely necessary. If they drive the voltage up too high they can destroy modern vehicle electronics. A more ideal charger size for car batteries is usually in the range of 5-6 amps since most car batteries are going to be in the 50-80 Ah range.

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  9 місяців тому

      I typically charge using the 10amp setting, then switch to 2amp, it has always worked for me ok, I have used the boost mode once and was very surprised it worked, truck was fine, the charger has never been the same since, it has trouble detecting a full charge now - I normally unhook the cables and put on the charger, but that one time I was running very late plus I've been wanting to try the boost feature- with covid and everyone working from home, my truck does not get much use since I don't have to drive to work now - thanks for the recommendation on charging, but very few battery chargers have the ability to fine tune the charging amperage to those limits, most certainly not a $30 HF automatic charger - thanks for subscribing

    I just bought this exact same charger based on your review of it. So I tried charging a friend of mine's battery that was in one of her cars that hasn't been started in around 6 month's. I hooked up the charger, and none of lights on the charger came on. I'm assuming the battery is completely dead, that's why it won't charge, right ? Thank you in advance for your reply.

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  Рік тому +1

      This exactly the problem, the batter is completely dead and the charger will not start charging unless it detects voltage from the battery, you can put another battery in parallel with the dead battery and charge both until the dead battery has enough of a charge to trigger the charger by itself - after 6 months dead, the battery might be damaged, once you get it charge and reading 12 v, you should use a load tester to determine if the battery is healthy - good luck and please post an update if you revive the battery - with covid, I don't drive my work truck as much, and about 3 times a year, I go too long between driving it and have to charge the battery, and this charge has saved me a lot of hassle and money - thanks for subscribing!

      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews After I sent you the text , I noticed that the sides of the battery were bulging out , so I knew that wasn't a good sign ! I took it to a local parts store to have them check it out, and it was completely dead. I took my battery out of my truck , which I knew was good to check out the charger, set it on 10 amp, hooked it up, and the green light immediately came on saying it was charged. Seems to be a good charger. I don't have the need to need one on a regular basis, but I would rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it ! Thanks for the video about the charger ! Very informative ! Thanks !

    Nice review. I bought one but confused about when it reaches full charge. On mine the needle is on 100% after a few hours and the green light comes on but 5 seconds later the red light comes back on. This back and forth continues for awhile. Does this back and forth of red and green means it's done charging? Any info appreciated.

      green means done, but it periodically does a recheck to see if the battery needs charged, if its flipping back and forth rapidly, its possible its sensing something wrong with the battery - I recommend charging on 10amp until done, then 2amp until done, the 2amp is a trickle charge and tops off the battery - thanks for subscribing

      inflation is pretty bad, i paid $30 for mine - i'm wondering - if it failed on day one, why you did not take it back for another one or for a refund? $60 for a dumb charger with no safety controls seems like an expensive charger, and an extremely dangerous charger, if you hook it up backwards the battery could blow up and acid would go everywhere, including on you, or let the clamps touch while its plugged in, and you will have a dead short, lots of potential deadly problems, I encourage you to return the charger to the store before someone is seriously injured - or just throw it away, not work the risk - thanks for subcribing!

      switching red/green back and forth means you likely have a problem with your battery, or is low on water, search youtube for AGM water, adding water to AGM is a little controversial, let the 2 amp charge go for 48 hours, if it does not go green, there is likely a problem with your battery, one of the cells likely has a little damage, the battery can still be used, but will run down quicker than expected, you will need to try and use it to find its limits, after the 2 amp charge, try the 10 amp charge and see if it still does the red/green switch - the battery charger is computer controlled, so if the battery is not performing normally, the charger can't figure out what to do, it does not necessarily mean your battery is beyond hope, that is why I'm recommending going back and forth on the 2/10 settings - the 50 is just for jump starting your car, so don't use it - thanks for subscribing!

      damned good question. Apparently, according to all these paid shills for Harbor Freight, we're screwed.... charger apparently only works if battery is only partly discharged, but not in our real world where the battery gets drained..... To these comp'd shills for H/F, too bad, tough luck, your battery is history. (and what did you think, that the battery charger would actually, like, um.... charge the battery?)

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  3 роки тому +1

      wow - sorry you can't see the need for this important safety feature, which by the way is easy to work with - hook 2 batteries up in parallel and charge them for a few hours, that will get enough charge into the dead battery for the charger to work on it alone - the alternative would be a dead short when the clips touched each other, or a switch to turn the charger on/off, much safer to sense a battery connected correctly before energizing the charger - BTW, ask harbor freight about comps or paid shills, way to cheap for that, they require me to put a disclaimer that I am not affiliated with them, and I have absolutely no relationship with HF, and I get comments from others that can't afford HF tools, and take it out on me

    • @snapwholeharborfreightreviews
      @snapwholeharborfreightreviews  3 роки тому +3

      yes it should, but if your battery will not charge to 'full' it will not switch to green, this does not mean your battery is bad, just that its not perfect, and one of the cells is weak, leave it on the 10 amp until green, then the 2 amp trickle charge for 24 hours and if its not green, then its not going to get better, but the battery is probably still useable - thanks for subscribing!

      that is exactly what is happening - the charger has to detect voltage from the battery for it to energize the cables, its an important safety measure - wire two lead acid batteries in parallel and charge them for a few hours - that will give the dead one enough charge to trigger the charger - parallel is + to + and - to - between the two batteries, then hook them up to the charger, its still 12v, just 70AH, so it will work fine, thats how solar panels charge battery banks, thanks for subscribing!

    I got one of these. Put it in the shed. Winter, car has been sitting. Went to start it, click, click. Checked cable connections, battery is too low to start the car, but I've got interior lights. Hooked up charger, says it's charging, check back in a few, cycling on and off. For laughs, hit the start function, it actually worked. So I went on a drive to charge the battery. Next winter, yesterday's major Blizzard went to move the car, no start, charger blinks, connection light random, does anything but charge. Hooked up an old shumaker, charged the battery. Tested the HD charger with my trolling motor battery, behaves fine. Shelved for that purpose because when it's below zero and you need to get the car started, it should just work. NFG in the real world. Tried twice, did bogus things, two strikes, your out.

      I would not trust that battery, the charger is fine, this charge will not charge a totally dead battery, when you leave a car sitting, either unhook the battery or charge it about every 2 weeks, a car will drain the battery in about 2-3 weeks, after that it drains the battery to dead, and this charge will not charge a battery unless the battery has some life in it, its an a automatic charge, and that is a safety measure, to keep the clamps from short circuiting when they touch, odd but a smart charger does this to protect you, and a dumb battery charger will let you hurt yourself - thanks for subscribing!
