Does drill music glamorise and encourage violence? Or are the artists just expressing, through music, the experience of many young people growing up in difficult city environments?

this ain't new. Happened to punk/metal, happened to garage, happened to grime, happened to road rap - and now it's UK Drill. In 10 years it'll be something else. The music ain't the cause, it's a symptom. We need to stop looking at youts creatively getting themselves off the streets and look at what caused them to make this music to begin with - i.e poverty, lack of social services, youth centres, education etc. Is it easier to just ""ban"" the music? Sure. Are you fixing anything? No.
Real talk! You said it! "Symptom" people need to stop being so short sighted with this issue.... truth is they dont care enough to examine the real cause
100% agree. The problem with PC culture right here. Bringing the ban hammer to anything they can point the finger at. Meanwhile not having the slightest sodding clue. The left is fine just beware of the authoritarian side of that politics. NEVER ACCEPT IT. Laugh them out of whatever position of power they hold.
I'm not sure why you're making this a political issue. This has been going on through both conservative and labour governments.
edit: The problem is not wanting to fix the problems for various reasons. It has nothing to do with PC culture (although yes, the tabloids do get outraged).
Truth right here, they look at whats presented on the media and blame it as an excuse for being shit at controlling the people, its like saying some gay ass diss track is causing violence because its getting a reaction, but its just a lot more intense and real, just another example of the government trying to silence peoples suffering, they don't want these kids to get out of ends, or show what its like on the street because it shows the governments failure to keep the law.
Madbrad200 thank you, finally someone who puts it perfectly. The music is just scapegoated and an easy option to blame
Stupid to blame the music for the violence. The violent content of the music is because it reflects their lived experiences, not because the music itself is causing the violence. This is just the latest round of pearl clutching by people who are out of touch.
Not be it glamourise it and normalises it.
The only reason why politics say drill music influences is the violence is cah they blame it cos there's nothing else they can blame on is what they think which is stupid cos them doing stuff like investing in youth clubs for youngers can changer alot than just banning drill
Music makes you feal emotional.I disagree it's relatively new and is a way which is like traditional gangster hip hop on steroids ever since uk drill became popular the crime rate increases explain that.It reflects a way of life that is ignorant and morally wrong. And young people are very impressional.Of course other factors such as poverty and your cultural background come into play.
Razor20091 I listen to drill and it does influence yute, dis man don’t need to rap about sticks and shanks. Why not rap positive vibes for yute
It provokes rivals into retaliating for disses in tracks. If you think that has nothing to do with the current level of violence, then you're blind to the facts.

The death threats don't come from the songs, these gangs have been at "war" for ages, its now finally being spoken about, and the government wanna mute it, who knows why? maybe because they're to stupid to try and fix the problem, and instead hide it away, gangs in general have been killing each other for timee, now they suddenly give a shit because its uncensored now, funny aint it looool
Sorry chief. I've seen innocent 12 year olds turn into drill rapper wannabe's way too many times. All genres of music influence fans, drill worst than 90's punk rock
Love songs need to be banned for the high rise in pregnancy 🤷🏾♂️
Uk drill is nowhere near as bad as the. Real chicago drill was. Media trying to make london look like a warzone 😂😂😂

Art reflects reality. Just like how Basquiat art always did. They tried to blame grime back in the day which basically led to the end of so solid crew but grime is too big a target now so they are are moving on to drill. They even had a law in place the "696" that would target grime but now they had to scrap it because over time it became obviously apparent that it was statically racist. Go listen to the Marilyn Monroes of the world and slipknots and many rock bands lyrics are bordering on being sadistic but they never go after them. Furthermore, You almost can't live in an area or an environment like Brixton and start rapping about going to the farm and riding horses and drinking tea whilst watching the sun go down... It's just not realistic ...
" They tried to blame grime back in the day which basically led to the end of so solid crew"
You're thinking of UK Garage. They did indeed blame garage for violence and it hurt as a result. The blame towards grime would come later. So Solid were a UK Garage crew.
YOU RIGHT...It's the trickle down effect ...
Reality reflects art too
aahahahaha. Marilyn Monroe.
Brixton does actually have a place where u can ride horses.
music doesn't make crime but if you already have it 100% in your mind it would get u more gassed to do it
Fact
They're right. None of the problems their communities face is *because* of the genre of music of which they are part. In fact, as they said, getting involved in music production is a totally positive trajectory for everyone involved.
Word dj khaled showed us from day . They don't want you to win they dont want you to have better life

Scribz answered very well. Good brudda
6:54 did no one else notice the door?
Art reflects life. Art can influence life, sure, but is no reason to ban it or demonize it. Their lyrics have nothing on the horror genre.. its rated R, 18 or PG for a reason and if bad people rise to the surface we can deal with them individually..
As Ice-T always said.. "I just rap reality . Crime is glamorous ...."
The Ade bar is 🔥🔥
They said and did the same with grime. It will be the same with the next big of genre
It won't though, there doing it because they're actually stupid enough to think drill is the cause of an increase in crime, little do they know its the fact they let people live in absolute poverty with nowhere to turn.
@@yeahyeah4433 exactly they carry on doing this with whatever big genre involed. They don't want us to make it. And even if everyone switched to rock music they would say the same to keep everyone down they don't want to see a nigga up
Grime was more about having lyrical skills. You could get respect just for skills on the mic. In Drill, you will never be taken seriously unless you've actually done dirt on road. Sadly, that's where we're at.
A lot of grime back in the day was done by the same type of people doing drill now. Same with road rap which the gov tried banning
Madbrad they weren't talking about knifing mans up in explicit detail on every track though. They weren't naming dead opps in tracks either. They also talked about looking after their family and getting out of the hood. Not really the same, but there are similarities.

Plenty of UK rap that don't consist of drill anyway. Listen to ard adz, mic righteous, lowkey, akala, avelino, krept and konan, etc. We got ethnic music in the charts but you want to pretend that's not the case
whats the song at 0:40 called?
Surely drill is just a symptom of the problem and not the cause itself
6:54 67 lives here 👀
Drill isn't a cause of violence, true. However, it definitely incites people to be more violent to develop an image of themselves as drillers and it would be incredibly ignorant to say otherwise. I say that as someone who listens to drill on a daily
Record companies really not happy they've been cut out.
Liquez never even considers not getting a new burger
You could say the same for violent video games causing school shooters or heavy metal causing teens to self harm.
Drill how I see it only increases violence between rival gangs, they diss each other get a lot of views and it's online and everyone is adding their input just adds fuel to the fire. The days when there was no youtube guys must have been dissing each other joining group chats and shit but I don't see most guys being bothered to join that it's long

Do people forget 50 cent and 90s rap honest to god middle class people have no idea I know people to listen to music all day and stone cold calm it's not to blame for violence it's a form off expression and music can touch man's soul when done right stop blaming it
It's been happening for along time now
What people don’t understand is that in areas where the drill music is from obviously it’s not increasing violence or influencing people because it already happens there. But I come from and area where there used to be almost 0 crime but I feel that the kids listening to this have genuinely been influenced as crime rates are increasing rapidly
Matman651 what area ?

If anything, drill reminds me of how lucky i am that i haven't had to deal with these scenarios
Skribz lookin like lukaku 😂
Joel Rai ur disgusting and racist fuck off u dumb bitch
what song from mtrap is that
Take a page out of South Park's book. The fastest way to get rid of a certain element of youth culture is for parents to encourage it and participate in it. No kid would listen to drill if his mum and dad were dancing to it in the living room. Alternatively the mums could get together to write their own drill about cooking meals, doing the dishes, etc.
Ur done out ere
@AmmSmoke GunSmoke Word
this is so dumb
Lool
Drill is the new punk rock culture of the 90's, but rather than drugs and alcohol, it's violence. At least most punk rock heads make it past 30
Song at 3:46?
I'm from the US. I recently took a trip to London & went down to Brixton. One of the locals told me that the area I ended up in was the UK equivalent of American projects, and I was like "Really?". Compared to US housing projects (particularly in NY, Chicago & Los Angeles), UK estates are actually really nice & well kept.
Up north the housings a lot worse
maybe in the one u went to but alot of estates all over the Uk are not inhabitable places to live often no running water gas electrics etc as well as damp and mould
I work five days a week and everyday this year I’ve heard about stabbings everyday on bbc radio then they go play drill music straight after reporting on it. They’re exploiting it and want it to to continue
That mtrap was in prison with my uncle apparently he actually a nice guy

What is to blame for the waves of crime at present? A feeble old lady called Theresa told the metropolitan police not to chase criminals when they escaped on mopeds (so predominantly youths) because they may fall and hurt themselves. This inherently caused a sharp rise in crimes committed on bike by creating an essentially untouchable method of robbery.
Partly is drill tho n a lot of it does glamorise crime n violence most stabbing recently have been linked to drill it's mainly sending got ops ect so yes it is partly to blame but you can't blame all violence for it but most is sending season ect basically so yh it is kinda to blame w scant deny that
*Just know that* Liquez cashed that Benz, no renting shit
The best drillers are 410 in my opinion
the claim of being the CNN of the streets is dishonest, because this is a vicious circle, art imitates life and then life imitates art and so violence spirals up and is hard to tame and unwind
Government need to up their fucking game and stop blaming drill music.
People were killing people before Drill music. The rise in knife crime is not connected to drill music per se, it is more connected to the rise in drug dealings, sales patches/turf wars. Drill music is actually seen as a legit way out of the grim life most of the kids involved in gangs aspire to.
