There were 2,300 victims of knife crime aged 18 or younger last year, records show - a rise of 45% over three years, in England and Wales. The Home Office says knife crime remains below levels in 2010 but it recognises there is more to be done. The BBC's Ed Thomas meets people who say they carry knives every day.

It's very easy to oversimplify a person. I'm not from the UK but I was raised by criminals and thugs and it's about how they see themselves as well not necessarily others. They believe it to be cowardice and they don't want to see themselves as a coward. Is they cared about the opinions of others they wouldn't do what they do. These people I described exist just as much as the ones you described. People are more complex than the stereotypes of them you've created in your head.
Or you do not know what you’re on about. If you run, most of the time you get caught anyway. Better for him to stay and be able to defend himself better than getting a knife sliced down the back of your head.

I feel for these kids. This happens all over. In Southampton, where I am from, I actually ended up carrying a knife for a few years because it was the only thing that made me feel safe after enough times being jumped or threatened with another blade or a screwdriver this one time. I know it won't happen, but the first thing that has to happen is that Police are put back walking the streets in numbers,as they used to be and be as visible as possible. Years of cuts and not walking the beat has got us to where we are now. Just threatening jail for carrying knives won't work as the streets aren't safe and people carry to protect themselves. Violent crime is way up, and knife crime is up. Gun crime is down, mostly because of the reporting, ie, a shooting with multiple victims is called "one" shooting.

I've been up and down England's cities through my years and have always got into situations but never had to deal with this, I've got 4 boys from 17 - 2 years old and I'm petrified their going to one day run into one of these idiots and that's it life over for next to nothing, something has to happen and quick to make our children safe. Life cannot be taken that cheap and these lads carrying knives are ruining their lives and will regret it.
