UK drill music gang banned from making violent music

- Five drill musicians have been banned from writing lyrics encouraging violence and ordered to warn police before they record or perform any songs. In the first judgement of its kind, the judge imposed a three- year criminal behaviour order on the gang members, who are serving sentences for conspiracy to commit violent disorder. All of them are part of the 1011 drill group, which has racked up millions of views on UA-cam.
A warning: there is flash photography in this report from the start.
Melanie Simpson, a criminal barrister who represented a member of the 1011 drill group in the court hearing, says it is "too simplistic to say music is fuelling crime and violence", while Patrick Green, from the Ben Kinsella Trust, says action had to be taken.

2003 (where there was NO drill music) had double the murders London had this year so I don't think banning the music will help
amtownsyou510 Exactly, it’s just being used as a scapegoat to the real root of the problem.
Facts
amtownsyou510 the thing is, we can't deny that there is a link between drill music and the murder rate, but it is not the main factor and it is not the main problem... If drill music gets banned, it could lead to chaos in and could lead to more death.
Thank you u understand g
Yass Zone banning drill music won't stop gang violence.
They had 15m+ views are were due to start making money from the music industry and leave this cycle of violence and go legimate, like other UK rap artists such as Giggs, 67, JHus. These people are rapping about their environment, fix poverty and there wouldn’t be any drill music, they are just products of their environment. All the ban does is put them back to square 1 and gives them more of a motive to keep selling drugs and warring with rival gang members. This literally makes the situation 10x worse
Interesting argument.
I don't think the situation is made worse. It's just left as it is - bad.
Susanne Yuk-ping If they have no means to make out of the council estates, and are unable to make music go try and bring themselves out of poverty, they can only turn back to selling drugs and violence. 1011 especially are very talented although there lyrics are violent
Everyone's got means to make it out of council estates. I grew up in Hackney, my boys either sorted their lives out or went road. You've got guys from the same block shotting crack and other graduating from Russel group Uni's and making it. It's bullshit that you can't make it out of the blocks
taskinini very true , but at least by making drill music they are actively trying to get out of the situation their in. Education ain’t for everyone and some people are more talented in other things such as music
I don't think that's an effective way to get out, all that does it further make black people think they can only make it through music, which leads to black people valuing music more than education, science or technology.

I also enjoyed the guy saying "they need to channel their music to something positive" ... yeah that's going to work, I'm sure they will rap about rainbows and unicorns now.
Of cause, music is a way to express what just language sometimes can't express.
James Boss who ?
But they are. obviously it's macho and provocative, but drill has always been a cry for help. Kids grow up surrounded by murders and everyone's older brother has been stabbed and they have to hold a knife to feel safe, the fear just amounts into aggression because that's the basic human reaction to living in a dangerous place. People growing up in rough hoods in London don't just coincidentally all decide to be violent, it's just a response to a bad situation. Drill is just a reflection of this
Treat the root of the problem, not a symptom. London needs more police, kids need a better education and the working class need hope.
Ruth Barr exactly
Treat ALL the problems. The symptons and the root
If people feel negative that’s how they’ll express themselves, banning expression never goes well.
Ruth Barr I'm sorry it doesn't help our community these negative images. Blacks in the london are not even the poorest group! Pakistanis and bangladesh are poorer than blacks. So wtf are we complaining about?
You still can’t ban free expression, Radio 1 tried banning music and it made it more popular, artists were thrilled when their single got banned.
Bruh they are doing the same thing they done in America in the 90s when they were trying to ban gangsta rap lol
therealz deal if rap was banned in America in the 90s, gang culture wouldn't be as prevalent as it is at the moment.
Please I support the ban of violent music and videos including movies. For the love of God what is going on
therealz deal calvin butts gettin gangster rap cd's crushed by a steam roller 😂😂
Nas eazye I no right a lot of these uk blacks(who are in that lifestyle) look up to these American black gangs and rappers
But imma tell you something
Nas eazye each generation of uk rappers take an influence from USA rappers
90s you had uk rappers such as London posse and hijack they took influence from naughty by nature and public’s enemy
Come the 00s uk rappers/groups like PDC and some south London rappers at the time were dressing like Dipset and sounding like styles p and jadakiss
10s this generation of uk rappers ,from what I see are kinda influenced by a bit of the 2000s rappers but mainly this generation are influenced by a lot of American gangsta/drill rappers
67 who I believe are one of the. Pioneers of uk drill said they took influence from Chicago drill
Human rights acts-1998
Everyone has a right to freedom of expression
U lot use your rights but you dont even know them properly 🤣 ur lucky met police is soft on you boys, do this in germany 🤣 remember they reppin' a postcode they dont own 🤣 how bout that 🤣
@teds violence occurs music or not. We need to understand it than just straw man and obfuscate like the media does. No one helps these yutes so they have to go on the streets. Community centers keep getting shutdown leaving a vacuum for kids and teens to get sucked into gangs.

All violent films to be banned unless made by big movie studios.
Tapor E hope this is sarcastic
H Velasco
I am deadly serious.
Only government approved and lobbied for large corporations have the right to make music and film as violent or sexual as possible. This is ok.
Everyone else making anything else needs to be shutdown for encouraging violence and rape.
Anyone using the word "trigger," or "shank," or "duppy," on non-corporate film footage , will be arrested and sent to be re-educated at a BAE Systems factory while listening to Dangerzone by Kenny Loggins.
Ross Kemp will film this encounter.

Gang crime has always been a major issue in London. Drill music doesn't exactly fuel it
dotdot dot it does
If one gang is goading another postcode gang then launch their message through music on UA-cam gaining million of views and humiliation and provocation for the other postcode gang --- then the music is aiding and abetting an escalation of violent altercations
Music doesn't encourage violence. Humans are just violent. These people rapping, use music sales and concerts to fund themselves, to get out of that life. Krept and Konan just opened a restaurant for example and AM (410) just bought a property with land in his home country of Uganda. By stopping their income from music, their only option is to go back out onto the streets to steal and commit crimes to get by and that's when normal pedestrians get involved.
TheRandomChannelTV studies show that the music you hear , attributes to your behaviour .
Marco Antunes That's life.
TheRandomChannelTV- Bullshit. You cannot tell me that when drill 'artists' explicitly promote violence related to postcode animosity then it is 'just music' A coward's excuse.
Nice gcse question 5 paragraph and dat
That's 2 people out of many who do trap.
Acid Rock, Death Metal, Heavy Metal etc have been singing about drugs, murder, hate etc.........so many movies too........hmmmmm, I wonder if it's because now they are making money out of it.
DNCAGE no they haven’t you have never even listen to those genres
No drill has caused so many ever since drill became a thing knife crime kept on increasing with rock and metal that stuff doesn’t increase it doesn’t influence others to murder
I remember my Dad getting angry with me for liking certain songs that talk about violence yet he loves violent movies. At least with music its just sound and you use your imagination. Movies you can hear and see people getting killed, taking drugs, getting raped etc. Why is music any different to movies?
I used drill as my case study for the A2 media exam 🤭
YamchaFT sameeee
Before banning drill music why dont you think about putting more funds into state schools and youth clubs. This government is a total joke. Get your fucking priorities correct
They should talk to the youth and understanding that the problem is not the music. People use music to express what goes on in their life.
Esther Mat Exactly.
Goverment brains are too Simplistic tk understand this type of common sense theyre too retarted
why are they tying to make it about black people? 🤦🏽♂️😂
Do they not have the right to free speech in uk? Like all this censorship and stuff it's wack let them tell there story
Complete nonsense, I don't even listen to this stuff but what are we doing as British people when we are moving towards banning a music genre! I know the first case in the video is complicated but if we start pushing towards banning a music genre what is next action movies ?
diesel92kj1 I don't think they're banning a music genre. These particular young men have to get their lyrics passed by police censor before putting it out there. They are tied to a specific real gang identity and area in London and murderous activity that their videos also glorify and encourage. The specifics didn't come across very well in this report. There's a lot more to this particular case than appears here.
T Jay yeah but it stops them from making overs go down the same path as them
T Jay why do us as black people promote negative images about ourself? we our the only race that DELIBERATELY promote NEGATIVE STUFF ABOUT OUR RACE! Then you wonder why people see us as violent?
This society wont stop till we've totally given up our freedom for "security" and the whole ting is 1984
drill music helps the artists stay of the streets and out of drug dealing by also still fitting in its used for expression of what they're seeing. even if this genre is causing murders and increase in knife crime(which i do not believe) then banning it is going to bring all the drill rappers back on the roads
which will inevitably cause more knife and gang crime
They said the N-Word...
Well let it happen between them.. they don’t need to be spewing it to the masses!
Fitting in and rapping about what you're seeing is not conducive to staying off the streets. Too many aren't willing to fully turn their back on their old ways, especially when they find out they made more money through county lines/drug dealing/other crime than music.
US rap music has loads of references to drugs, murder, gang related things and the rappers also commit crimes so why isn’t it banned?
yo digga spitting on the news hahahaha
She's holding it down for drill against all the scapegoating.
3’1011
If 1011 are locked up why ban their tunes ? beef isn’t gonn escalate now they’re behind bars.
I understand that sometimes drill music can encourage violence but you can’t only take away the music it is also about the environment the person lives in that the country wants to get rid off and also make youth clubs , music studios anything because these people are talented and so to ban their work and the way they make clean money is just quite unfair
theyre making it out like there was no crime or murders before drill
Five drill musicians have been banned from writing lyrics encouraging violence and ordered to warn police before they record or perform any songs.
Like there really gonna do that???
Who would know?????
How do you enforce it??????
most these people start as Gang and leave the violence through drill
War on black British music, their lives are hardly rosey what kind of music do they think they will be into? How do we know those weapons were not planted? If they are famous and coming up why would they do such a thing?
jerina shooting star lool the weapons was not left there and for any one to believe that they was use for props u got to be bugging lool these man clearly got caught when they was riding out
Absolutely, this is a reflection of problems not a cause of them.
No war on drill music. Why do you want negative music to represent black culture????
I doubt this group are that much of problem police would go to the lengths it takes to successfully plant weapons and then convict the perpetrators. That’s usually saved for highly organised crime syndicates and terror groups, no wannabe gang bangers. Why are is it kids in London feel so hard done by when in fact they have more opportunities then the majority of their peers in other parts of the UK?
Before you reply take a look at this. Granted The Mirror is bullshit but stats and figures are concrete > www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/20-worst-england-places-poor-11599027.amp
People who say 'they are just expressing the reality' conveniently ignore this toxic 'music' is explicitly PROMOTING specific gang on gang attacks.
I understand and respect everyone's opinion on this platform but at the end of the day your looking at kids getting groomed for a life of drugs and violence. Allot of people would reply 'Its art, it has nothing to do with the violence', yet my younger 8- 15 year old cousins (from East London) want to glorify these people and their violent actions they brag about. 0:44
Im only surprised they didn't ban their music 3 years prior when I was in centre, listening to my friends look up to these rappers that want to praise a death of someones son.
The worst part is the women on channel 4 is saying drill isn't a problem when the definition of drill is 'defined by its dark, grim, violent, nihilistic lyrical content' 4:48 . Its not about just calling out other gangs , its about glorifying knife/acid/gun crime against others.
Hassan Ahmed groomed? Violent kids have rubbish parents
I agree with you a 100% but I also believe that the influence that these rappers hold on their listeners has become a crucial source of evidence when people start throwing acid on others , which I don't think parents teach their kids to do , yet they only ignore/don't notice the extreme culture of violence in their kid's music. Thanks for the comment.
You know it started In America and when it banned in the uk. You can search it up on UA-cam
Have you heard lyrics from 90s rap artists? Have you heard lyrics from 80s rock/metal/punk artists? None of that is being banned because it is a rightful freedom of expression.
These young cousins you speak about have to be taught by their parents to realise these people are not giving out a PSA, they are showing you the reality of their lives.
If you look at the recent episode of children react to eminem from the fine bros, you realise how kids can be taught to not do what they see in these videos, but still appreciate the art. It’s the parents’ job, a judge shouldn’t and needn’t be involved.
You can’t tackle crime without tackling poverty 🤦🏾♂️
They say there going to chef 👨🍳 man up,come on all they meen is there going to cook some food 🥘DUH!
Isn't it because of gangs that this music is big ?
Why would it be that because of music that gangs exist ?
Banning the music won’t do anything and it started in America
I wish the news would never talk about music
Why?!?
Fax
Drill Music is a scapegoat for the rise in knife crime. But, certain lyrics do fuel violence.
Attempting to ban a genre of music is clearly not the way to go. Look at horrorcore type music that's been around for ages for example, literally lyrics about gruesome torture and worse things (music many non-violent people enjoy, myself included). Censorship is wrong in any shape or form and will not be accepted by the public wether you agree with this type of music or not.
All they gotta do is change their identity s like scribz
Romeo and Juliet is about a guy who kills another guy for killing his best friend, then him and his Mrs kill themselves. Just putting that out there.
I know they’re making more music I’m not stupid
my guy out "what a life" instead of "what a feeling"😭😭😭😭
Drill music?? - WTF is that??

Why so many dislikes? From the point of view of people on the other side of the streets, this debate proved there is considerarion of the positive effect of Urban music on the potential of a lot of young people. They raised good points, and 1011 got caught red handed, what do you expect?
THC Music Cloud it’s the music they’re trying to ban, which is completely wrong
THC Music Cloud 1011 are good artists and dont deserve time
THC Music Cloud them using weapons is their problems and doesn’t involve any other artist e.g sl 67, then using the “they are just props” excuse actually hurts the music so they kinda fucked people over with that
Can we deep the fact he’s upset that us black people are using the n word 😒
Let them express themselves - then talk to them and ask about why are they so angry.
why do you channel 4 ppl care let us enjoy any music we want to listen u cant stop us

Violence created drill music not the other way around. Do something about the gangs drugs and killings Around London and the drill music will stop
Stupid. literally bans freedom of speech.
There has been gang crime for decades before Drill came into the scene, how does music justify murder and violence? sure is can depict such but so do movies such as rambo which glorify warfare yet at no point did it influence the millions of people watching to shoot down helicopters. Using such absurd reasons only demonises how ignorant we are on the matter of the crime in our city. Drill Music has also been a career path where it invites youths into the music industry which also diverges them from crime on the street by depicting crime in lyrics. Proof of this is one of the most popular artists Giggs being an ex gang member furthering his path by perusing music. Influence is inevitable, Ignorance is avoidable.
It's not a "drill video" it's a music video
Better than the US because of a dangerous gangsta rap on radio included the Songs of NWA in the 1980's causes of police brutality and against the FBI And It was also banned on the radio station and even MTV

The uk not actually understanding whats going on. These people aint violent they are kids wanting to make music, the music they love.
Put up prison sentences for stabbing to 25 years minimum. That will make a change to the streets
Drill is becoming a cult get rid of it ASAP
How come u aren't doing anything about America they have guns in there videos and now kids think it's good to carry a gun the only reason you hate drill music is because you don't understand what they are saying and when the songs come on you can't have fun when the song come on and the most important thing is that they are black that's why you are taking the music down
You're not bad if you listen to drill. Most of these people that do the drill scene have not even done most of the things they claim to in the song.
The music is not encouraging crime, the crime is already there and the music is a expression of what's happening. All these so called "upper class" people are daft and have no clue
Since when was it illegal to rap the truth, kmt
Drill has changed it's dancy and it's progressed as seen on BBC 1
By the same logic we should ban films, Tv shows and video games because doing so will prevent murder. So stupid.😂😂
Need to band more because to many lives are getting lost on streets due to this madness
Always showing black drill songs there bare white drill songs fing racist banning drill aint gonna help d c
Why are people disliking as if its them banning it

This hurts me. Let people use their talent and creativity to create music that reflects their thoughts and lives. UK Drill Music isn’t the problem and banning it isn’t helping solve anything.
