Nice video! Good to mention that the variocam system of the 3 chain engines is completely different. It uses oil pressure to rotate the intake cam against the chain sprocket of the intake cam. The chain itself is not affected.
My perspective on this is, going to only 3 chains was a good idea, but they should've kept the double roller chain from the crankshaft to the IMS and located all the chains on the front of the engine. The aftermarket DLC plain bearing with the DOF to replace the ball bearing would have made things work quite a bit better. The original Lokasil cylinders and the ferrite piston skirt plating was better than the next generation, but government intervention was the cause of that one and ferrite got banned; dammit man.
💯 I feel the overall design is a wonder of engineering, if only they didn’t have those pesky catastrophic failures that ruin lives…..Thank you for watching Warren! 🤘😎
Thanks for fun video! And great to see you back in action, hopefully an indication of improving health. My 2 cents worth: all else NOT considered, fewer chains of course is better. But also of course that's no way to make up your mind about what you prefer🙂. To me the 3-chain M96/03 has the plusses you mentioned (3.6 and Variocam+ give it more power and torque, plus fewer moving/wearing parts), and the minuses you also mentioned (more frequent bore-scoring, exactly because of the changes that @warrenlucier5796 mentioned, which in turn leads to oil contamination which leads to IMS bearing failure). On balance I think would still choose the later car & engine, but only after extensive Pre-purchase inspection! And looking at asking prices on European websites the marketplace overhere seems to agree 🙂2002+ 996.2's command higher valuations. Money no object of course would go for the GT3 engine (M96.76, M96.79, 3 chains, plain bearing IMS, Nikasil cylinder) or the MA1 from 2009 onwards, then down to 2 timing chains! (and a host of other improvements of course).
Those are all very good points, I agree completely. All of this makes a Turbo look like a pretty good deal?? Thank you for watching and being a part of the tiny garage. 🤘😎
Would a 3 chain be a better choice? Just finished watching videos on chain tensioner guides replacements, looks like a real project. PCA videos seem to think the borescoring goes with the forged pistons. Considering an 03-05 boxster S over earlier boxster. Thanks.
@@teamground0229 Check out my borescoring video WHAT IS BORE SCORING? PORSCHE 996 & 997 ua-cam.com/video/QJ_6V0ihrks/v-deo.html Also episode 18 on the ims is worth a watch. The variocam is what took my car down. If it happened again i could fix it in a weekend with porsche parts for under $200. 3 chain in this video wins because of its design and the fact that it removed a know failure point (variocam guides). If you look at the whole car the answer is not that simple. Any 996 or 997 should have the bores inspected from the oil sump side before purchase. Good luck, Thank you for watching! 🤘😎
Great to see you posting vids again, Finn! Keep them coming :)
Almost back in the land of the living, new videos soon! Thank you for watching! 🤘😎

Thats a good point 👍 Thank you for watching! 🤘😎
Good to see you back, Finn! And a great explanation of the chain set-ups on the 911 engines.👍👍
Nice to be back dude! Thank you for watching! 🤘😎
5 chain FTW!!
Yes Sir!! 🎉
My internet research tells me 3 chain are more likely to borescore. That’s a huge reason to prefer 5 chain. 😮
Nice one Finn, can you do a part 2 where you colour it in. Just happy to see you back mate 😎👊
Welcome back to the 996. Hope you have a few more videos. Nice work.
Workin’ on it! 🤘Thank you for watching! 🤘🍀
