PRS SC 58 vs Gibson Les Paul Comparison SC58

  • The new PRS SC 58 is Paul Reed Smith's take on the classic Les Paul design. Here we go head to head in an A/B comparison with a stock SC 58 and a heavily modified Gibson Les Paul. The Les Paul has been tricked out with a high quality Callaham ABR-1 Bridge, lightweight alluminum tail piece, mid-output Dimarzio pickups and locking gotoh tuners.
The PRS SC 58 comes out stock sounding like an amazing Les Paul, but with incredible Artist grade flame maple tops, super easy to play necks, excellent tuning stability, and the attention to detail PRS guitars are known for.

@discofishing I know there are DiMarzio's in the guitar because I put them there. :-) As far as tones, quality control, and playability is concerned, that's for you to decide, and hopefully this video helps with the tonal department. I concede that it's not a perfect comparison with the LP being modded, but I guess the point was I've had to put a lot of time and money into my LP to get it in the same league as the PRS which is factory stock.

That's one of the best equipment/instrument comparisons I've ever seen. The way they're overlaid like that is outstanding. How do the two guitars compare with how they play?? The PRS looks great, nice update to the original.
thanks for your efforts, very cool!!

one of the better comparisons. Unfortunately this one has the same problem for me that all of them havein that it's not showing me the difference in each guitars primary tone. I very rarely keep stock pickups and wiring in guitars, as it stands now I'm sitting on 2 sets of Wagner PAFs, a set of Fralin PAF and a pair of high outputs. I wish I could find one video where both guitars have the same pickups, pot values, caps, etc. with all these A/B comparisons I don't know if it's the guitars themselves that I'm hearing the difference in, or is it the pickups? Does guitar A should warmer than guitar B because they have an innate quality that makes it so, or is it because guitar A's pickups are warmer than guitar B?

@haggertysmusic This was very helpful. The PRS sounded a little bit thinner compared to the LP to my ears. Which LP was this, a traditional before the mods or something else?
    Both are very nice, however.

  • @haggertysmusic

@ThieleM A stock Les Paul historic would probably have been the fairest comparison, however I tried to do the best job I could with what I had. We aren't a Gibson dealer so I used my personal guitar. I guess the point I was hoping to make was that I've put a lot of time and money into my Les Paul to make it sound and play the way I want, whereas the SC58 is ready to go, stock, out of the box with no hassles.

They both sound amazing, and look amazing...The differences here are like looking at two high end high def tvs in the store....you'll notice strengths and weaknesses in each model while looking at them side by side, but when you get it home you won't notice the weaknesses, because those were only evident while comparing to the other model....

The PRS sounds has more clarity, I want to use the word "articulated" to describe it if that makes any sense. The LP has mojo. Some people can choose sides all they want but in the end, I like guitars. I like tele's because they do the tele thing, strats because they do the strat thing, LP's because etc. etc.

I love these comparisons because it gets peoples blood boiling if you hate on LP's. Its also sad that some people have never played a PRS. I have both a LP Traditional pro and a SC245. I love them both and fight between which one to use. I will say that the LP gets more attention when I play it, well because its a LP. It sounds great but like most stock LP's I had tuning issues with the G string on bends but that can was fixed. The PRS by far is an easier guitar to play and when going for that hard rock overdriven sound the PRS wins over my LP because the sound has a deeper low end that grabs you by the chicken nuggets and squeezes like crazy. The PRS has never had any issues with tuning and bends are smooth and silky. Yes the LP will probably maintain a higher value but that doesn't make it worth more. Yes my opinion is worth what you are paying me for it but when I look for new guitars I now look more at PRS than LP.

  • @stevesolo16
    @stevesolo16 5 років тому +1

They both sound great! Being that the Les Paul has been changed to suit its owner and the PRS is straight out of its box the comparison isn't really a good one. Have the capacitors or the potentiometers also been changed on the Les Paul? The pickups on the PRS are a slight bit brighter. I think that they are both so similar it really comes done to which one feels better in your hands.

It is, the heel makes upper fret access easier. PRS does have a playability advantage in my opinion, the new pickups PRS is putting onto these guitars are spectacular. Mine has the 58/08 pickups.....stunning.
the GIbson has more...what's take word?
    Thump?

I own both a 2010 59 LP RI VOS and recently bought my first PRS, a bluefade SC58. Both built like tanks but if I had to drop one from 5 ft it would be the PRS. Playing- LP feels smoother. PRS frets are higher and sharper. LP feels broken in,PRS feels stiff, over machined. Sound- The SC58 is STRONG. The pickups sizzle. Lp sounds like , well a LP. Which is a good thing. With a OD or distortion they all sound the same imo. Edge to the LP. Name,rep,resale.PRS- Best tops/wood.

Most difference is the neck pickup, clean. Les Paul sounded better in that regard. However, PRS a tiny bit more articulate in the higher frequency ranges when any combo of the bridge pickup is engaged. Les Paul definitely feels warmer. I feel like it had slightly more volume also.
I’m still going with the PRS. I like tuning stability.

The Les Paul has more character, more rounded with clearer frequencies, more bite, more more more. The PRS SC does sound great but not amazing. I dont think anybody will ever replicated the Les Paul sound quite like the real thing. But the PRS sure does play smoother. I just traded my PRS SC for a Les Paul Standard Quilt top and couldnt be any happier. I been through the PRS SC and LP battle for a LONG time and from my experience this is my conclusion.

I wanna like the PRS more because the design is sleek, smaller, stays in tune better due straight string path thru the nut, headstock breaks are way less likely, and the build quality is more consistent, but then I listened without looking and every time I liked the sound I was hearing and peaked back it was the Gibson. PRS almost sounds scratchy on the lead neck pickup and not as much oomph in the bridge. Funny thing was I noticed the difference more with the distortion and clean sounded almost identical.

don't know what Gibson does, but the LP still sounds warmer and SWEETER. Pretty close, but it's still the better sounding guitar to my ears. But as someone said below, for a fair comparison you would need to play them with the same pickups. Otherwise you may be listening to differences from the pickups.

Tough choice... I love both guitars. I've owned a limited edition Gibson Les Paul GT and currently own a PRS Mira. Played clean it's very hard to tell them apart. However when you switch over to the drive channel, the LP is a bit more raw/raunchy, has that recognisable sound and and is slightly less brighter. The SC I think has a wider tonal spectrum and sounds like the pickups break up a little earlier, perhaps more attack (and obviously a work of art). It's a tough choice, also considering the tastier riffs were played on the LP, I think if I were to choose I'd go with the SC because I'd sound like a million other players with the LP and the SC's workmanship is miles beyond the LP - you don't break strings or have tuning/intonation problems with PRS guitars.

If you read the "about ' section you'll see the Paul is modded and PRS is stock so with that in mind the PRS must win. And if it fails to satisfy, mod it! Seems like they tryed to make the Paul sound as good as poss yet left the PRS as it was because it sounded good straight off.

I own a 59 LP VOS reissue and just bought my first PRS, A SC58. LP is more confortable to play and feels warmer where a s the PRS while a work of art, feels sterile and cold. Just my opinion. But back to tone. I also own about 2 dozen various other guitars from Strats to Modernes to Wolfgangs. Regardless of what I play, with a $100 MXR 10 band EQ I can make a Strat bassier than a LP, or make a Wolf sound like a Telecaster. A twist of a dial can make either of these guitars sound differnent.

  • @mikemccourt6225

To my ears, the Gibson's pickups are a little bright in comparison - but that could also be attributed to the scale length. Clean, the bridge pickups sounded very similar, but the differences became apparent with gain. The PRS neck pickup sounds warmer to me - again, it could be the slight difference in scale length.

    Always Gibson for me.
PRS is very brash sounding and youthful, without darkness. But the Les Paul has is more aggressive! And laid back at the same time! Kinda broody, I'd say. It's this unique combination that makes the LP a great instrument.
Like, if both guitars were personified, then the PRS would be a young man (with facial stubble) in his early 20s, and the Gibson would be a very manly, bearded guy with a deep voice in his late 30s, with some kind of a seductive darkness!
PRS is perfect for very loud rhythm.
Whatever you play on a Gibson LP is just so sweet and warm and ... I could go on and on and make use of all the adjectives! That seductive tone just takes you to another galaxy! But the PRS? I don't think so.
Well, it's all a matter of personal preference, I guess :) The PRS is just the perfect guitar for the kind of music Alter Bridge makes. Gibson? Literally anything :)

@ValverdeLeov Yes. Absolutely. Clearer tone, more mids, more sustain. I dislike the Nashville style tune-o-matics on any Gibson, and much prefer the ABR-1. I personally believe Callaham makes the best one, but any ABR-1, including Gibson's, will be a much better sounding bridge over the Nashville... despite the fact that the Nashville is touted as an 'improvement', with better frequency response and intonation range.

I completely disagree with many of the characterizations of the PRS and Gibson sound in the comments here, but that's subjective. What's missing from this video (and not incidentally the comments) is that a Gibson LP will sound markedly different from other LP's. I've found Gibsons to be extremely variable in overall tone, feel, output, playability, etc. PRS seems much more consistent, but they don't completly cop Gibson tones. Generally they are "sweeter" all around to my ears. If you're going for retro Gibson tones, the PRS is 95% of the way there, but never spot on. However, I do think the PRS is a better guitar.

  • @ProbMad66
    @ProbMad66 11 років тому

I think I shall disagree on this one. I also think that Les Paul Gibson series are a masterpiece, but at some point I chose PRS. I think I chose it for this unique ability to play really smooth on clean tone and noisy on distortion and override. I had a Fender once, a Telecaster. I really liked it. The clean tones were great, distortion was ok. But it was actually a guitar potential of which lies in clean sound. PRS SC has a potential when playing almost everything. But that's only my opinion.

Hard to pick a winner. The Gibson has that unmistakable knarly midrange sound whereas the PRS is more balanced.
