As a long term fan of PRS and owner of many models. They are not boutique guitars. They make thousands a year in USA alone. They are extremely reliable, play in tune, stay in tune and will hold up in the toughest rooms and gigs. I own them and love them because they feel best in my hands but not everyone loves them.
I think a big part of people not loving them is an inherent bias. Guitarists have been conditioned to think that older more traditional equipment is ALWAYS better. If PRS has been around since the 50's who knows how many of the classic albums we love would have featured them. I think people are doing themselves a disservice by dismissing them without really giving them a chance. Just look at the initial hate the Silver Sky received and now there a huge seller.
I’m the odd man out here, as I love PRS guitars. Currently own the CE24 as well as an S2 cu24-08, se dgt, se standard 24-08 and mike mushok baritone. I’ve been a PRS fan/player since 08. Absolutely perfect guitars imo. Super versatile. The feel on all my guitars are just right for what I like. My hot take - I would 10000% buy a PRS singlecut over a gibson lp any day, as I think PRS does the singlecut way better than gibson.
You're definitely not the odd man out, I too love PRS, especially since I live here in Maryland 😁 But in all seriousness I have never had to return a PRS for quality reasons when buying online. I cannot say that about Gibson. I'm not saying it's true but I have the perception that Fender and Gibson really don't take quality seriously until you get to custom shop level. By the way I own PRS Fiore, Paul's guitar(favorite), 408, Santana Retro, and DGT SE. Plus I just got the horsemeat and Mary Cries pedals which are great.
Jeremy I counted on your honesty wherever you work, I feel your opening statement about being more honest now that you don't work for a prs dealer kinda threw me a curve, with your life and guitar philosophy, any way nice guitar congrats
-Got to say, I love the understated PRS guitars. I especially like the Standards, which are all mahogany guitars.
I have two core PRS guitars. I wanted subdued visuals. In function I know they stay in tune great, the necks fit my hand and they sound great. As a gigging musician they check all the boxes.
I haven't ever felt a better neck shape than the pattern regular for me.
If it came from the CORT factory...its a CORT. Regardless of who stamped the headstock.

I think this guitar is beautiful. PRS is not just about high end super flashy finishes. There are plenty of PRS finishes that are very tasteful, and yet also understated. The understated part, to me, is part of the beauty. But then to each their own !

I got a sc250 about a week ago and I think these guitars are absolutely insane, the fact they don't make them this way anyway is a crime !!!
I really, really think you’d be happy with the current McCarty 594 variant that has 58-15 LT pickups . . . or the recent 594 SE’s with an upgraded 58-15 LT set. I really think the more recent design from the last few years with those specific pickups would be more your vibe. I mean, the standard 58/15 pickups that come installed in the SE are really good, but when you hear them side by side with the LT, and feel the difference in dynamics while playing, the LT’s become a very attractive option (crazy price aside).
I say this because I have had the opportunity to play an upgraded SE from time to time with these very 58-15 LT pickups because I won a set as part of a PRS upgrade kit from Phil McKnight a couple of years back and gave them to my friend as a very special gift for her endless kindness with my medical situation when I heard she was buying a McCarty 594 SE - so she lets me borrow that guitar when she’s in town visiting her family sometimes (unless I ask her to bring something else from her collection). I’m definitely not a PRS person and prefer the Epiphone LP’s I’ve played. However, the upgraded McCarty 594 SE definitely has something about the playability and tones that makes it different than a LP - it’s definitely fixes some issues on the classic early LP designs (not counting more modern LP’s like the Modern) while retaining the awesome things. My friend has a double cut - I don’t think it really changes anything tonally except for looks as compared to the single cut.
Anyway, I wish you could try an upgraded SE or the full monte 594 that comes with these pickups installed. If you’re still looking to get a PRS (I remember the last failed attempt that came with those 58/85 pickups that were way too hot for you lol), I really think a McCarty 594 SE with 58/15 LT’s would be your jam.

I agree about PRS. There's nothing special about them. They used to be beautiful looking guitars 10-15y ago, but not so much now. The 10 tops are what the ordinary tops used to be, and have that blurry look to them rather than nice, defined flames. The models where they try to do a vintage look just look terrible. I tried to find a core model, Cu24 or Modern Eagle, last year, but after playing every model I could find, not one felt good to me. The only one I ever liked was an S2 Vela that I purchased from a local shop that was going out of business. Bought it new for $900cad, and after a month, I tried to sell it and ended up at a $50 loss. Keep in mind that was after getting a 60% discount from the shop going out of business.
If a beautiful top is what you are looking for, RByrne, you should see if you can find an 89 CU24. PRS had the most beautiful flamed maple I've ever seen in 1989.
I went 3 states out of my way to go to Gibson stores in Tennessee with cash in hand to buy one (LP). All the ones I've picked up never moved me. Vibration, resonance wasn't there. Came back home. local store had a S2 Singlecut Semihollow. I was floored. Also have a custom 24, Awesome. 4 SEs. I do have one Epi LP Classic.

I’ve yet to find a PRS that I would keep, I’ve had couple SE, and one core, but at the same time I’ve heard people make them sound amazing,
I’m in the same boat. I’ve tried a n se from each factory and been really disappointed with each. Average fretwork, badly cut nuts, choke out when bending strings, and really bad looking wood. The core I played was nice but nothing amazing for the price. I don’t have a great experience with them at all.
I have a 2008 SC245 Gold Top... Great model... I could see owning that one... Cool guitar
If it plays good and sounds good, I buy it. Not hung up on all of the "nit picky" stuff. I have only purchased 3 guitars in the last 50 years that I felt like I needed to change/work on. When you find a guitar that is good out of the box, it should be a keeper.
As far as your comment about SEs not being real PRSs I agree. You cannot squeeze $3K+ of components, fit and finish into a $1K guitar. However, how much something is worth has a lot to do with what people are willing to pay for it. For me, other than looks, a Core does not play or sound 3x better than an SE. I have owned a Core and an S2. When I down sized, those were the first guitars to go with the Gibson LP and the Fender Strats....LOL. So I have 3 PRS SEs. They play and sound better than most guitars of the same type in the same price range. I will live with being snobbed-off as long as my audience does not complain....LOL FYI of course I have other guitars, but that is a different thread!! Mostly Ibanez and various flavors of Telecasters.........
I have never owned a PRS Core model but I did buy a 24-08 SE and I have to say that I am impressed enough to have an CE SE on my shopping list. I am a fan but not a fanboy per se and a Core is not within my budget nor my interest at the moment. PRS was an acquired taste for me and I can understand why people like them and also why they don’t. PRS is primarily a flirtation for me but I am really more of Tele, single-coil, bolt-on neck kind of guy with the odd Gretsch or Gibson thrown in for good measure so long as they are not overly aggressive or dark in tone. My biggest pet peeve with PRS is that they no longer offer the old Santana shape with the symmetrical bass and treble-side horns like the old Les Paul double cuts. To me that is their best shape because it keeps the body compact , is ergonomic with double cutaway, and has the handsome balanced looks of a 335. If they made that guitar in a CE bolt-on model and with some brighter and less compressed pickups, like narrowfield humbuckers, mini-humbuckers, or Harmony-style goldfoiIs I would definitely be a buyer.
I'm with you on the old Santana shape with the more symmetrical shape! I hate all the PRS models with the exaggerated upper horns, they're just plain ugly, like most all Ibanez style guitars, B.C. Rich, Dean, Kiesel, etc. pointy-assed guitars!!! The PRS single cut and the afore mentioned Santana model are the only ones I would buy, and in the SE versions!
Yep, that’s the same reason I don’t like Gibson Explorers, Flying V’s, Firebirds., or the Theodore. The proportions are exaggerated for shock effect and just look wrong to me. I like shapes that are in harmony with one another. Fender seem to do this best across most of their line with the exception of the Meteora. Even the offsets like the Jazzmasters and Jags manage graceful lines while still staying quirky.
I bought a used PRS S2 594. Really like it, but not over the moon with it. It's a dark amber burst, so nothing really fancy, which I like. I don't really want a work of art, just a "blue collar" type of workhorse. I wish mine had dots, as I'm not crazy about birds. Yes, I'm boring, dots or plain blocks!
I sold my and got the PRS Flag ship Custom 24 . Best thing I’ve ever done especially since I own a Gibson Standard. 🤷🏻♂️

Yes. My Guild S200 is set neck, mahogany, and humbuckers but it's not very Gibsony
Anything without the bird inlays looks drastically better to me. It looks like they got a custom order from a bird watcher and never changed out the jigs.

I am a Les Paul guy who has never owned a Les Paul, haha. But I have really been thinking about Singlecut PRS instead of a Les Paul. But I should probably really get a Les Paul.

If you ever come across the original PRS Vela semi hollow from reclaimed wood, give one of those a try, it might surprise you.
Those are cool. I have a regular white semi hollow vela in satin that I love. Most comfortable electric guitar I've ever played.
My buddy spend a ton of money on a PRS and raves about how much he loves it. In my opinion the action is too high and the tone is too thin. I dropped some Seymour Duncan pickups in a Squier (custom 5 trembucker and alnico II pro humbucker) and in my opinion I have a guitar that looks, plays, and sounds better for about a quarter the price.

What model PRS did your friend buy, Brett? I'm surprised at the high action, unless that's the way he likes his setup. PRS's, out of the gate, come set up with pretty low action.
I agree with your comments. There will come a time, and it's almost here, that the quality and sound of guitars built in Asia will be the same as those built in the United States, at a quarter of the cost. Food for thought for all U.S. manufacturers...
Have owned a lot of USA PRS. Went through a phase where I was convinced I wanted to be a PRS guy. And I’ve since sold them all and only have an SE that I upgraded a bunch left. They just aren’t anything special for the cost.

When i first saw it on the video, i thought Les Paul. I would like the lower weight, but at this point I'm not sure I'm going to worry about electric guitars, since I mostly play acoustic and really prefer that.

PRS guitars have just never spoke to me. They are very well made instruments but just not for me. LPs are great guitars and I don't think you're being fair with them. LPs are just killer to look at but there is definitely a LP sound that's unmistakable. I think Gibson is getting crazy with prices and I think the headstock angle is too much but I still love LPs!!!

While I'm not much of a PRS kinda guy I gotta tell you... you're so wrong on Les Pauls... so wrong. Mayeb you aren't playing LPs through a good amp or maybe have the setting wrong... There are many reasons why they've been so popular for so long...

No offense, but you don't really seem like the PRS kind of guy. And saying they suck is like saying Mercedes make shit cars. Do you even know about PRS? It is a standard among guitars.
Gibson vs PRS is apples and oranges.
But you should know that.
So you went out and bought a tamed prs and blame it for being tamed lol.... sorry.. i think prs should not be single cut. And i have yet to hear good sounding prs pickups... i own a custom 24. Just put the mcarty pickups in it. It had improved, but not what i wanted... but i dont see the point in a prs single cut...m
I own a SC 245 10 top and a SE as well....both guitars are workhorses....two kinds of players out there and (highly insane both kinds.)...Les Paul dudes and PRS dudes...IMHO PRS are a more Quality build.. Opinions....just like Buttholes! 😅

Who is buying these new ones? I am so sick of PRS. If you play a good vintage Les Paul you will be elated. Most of the modern les Paul’s are woofy and not like their vintage counterpats
