The Spyderco Yojimbo 2 Pocketknife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

- Опубліковано 6 вер 2024
- The Spyderco Yojimbo 2 is designed for self defense by Michael Janich, but I'm going to review it today as a basic tool for EDC. Although there are compromises in the name of "weapon", it's not a bad knife for EDC.
So, if you're trained in the arts of the blade (unlike, well, pretty much everybody) and need an EDC knife too, the Yojimbo 2 is a great choice. But if you're just a random jackass looking for an EDC, you might look elsewhere and get less compromise in a smaller package.
"I'm not a ninja." Exactly what a ninja would say.
Lol exactly
Classic misdirection.
Toki52 Nick is very deep undercover
True
Classic nick
Nick: “killer slicer”
Cold Steel: “Great new knife name...”
Lol, if you get attacked by Ninjas, then your time on earth is short. What do you suppose the life expectancy of a knife " fighter" is???🤔🤪
A little self defense saying that my dad taught me long ago that still sticks with me to this day is: "He who screams and runs away lives to scream another day."
I love that. Beautiful!
Patrick +1 +lol
The saying is actually, “He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day.” I do however, like your dad’s version too...;)
Pops is right. But there are times the screaming and running won't cut it.
Being a pussy is cool on this channel.
I just got my brother one of these as a gift on preorder. Hes the type of guy who has a bunch of knives, but none are really great.hes gonna be stoked when he gets this beast
Well done of you champ, did he like it?
Reviewing this knife without talking about it’s SD potential use is like reviewing a Porsche 911 without talking about how fast it goes.
Using a knife for self defense is a horrible idea anyways.
@@02stampede using this for self defense is more like using a Porsche as a battering ram.
The loser of a knife fight dies on the street. The winner dies at the hospital. I Love mine. It is so Odd. All the negatives Nick mentions are what make mine so cool. Totally impractical, but it feels special to hold such a deadly tool in my hand while watching Wheel of Fortune on the couch with my wife. Comparing this knife to an E.D.C. for regular use is like comparing a pick-up truck to a Corvette.
@@cunnelatio
Sure. But you are missing the point of this tool. It is a measure to get to a gun, and won't land you in prison because it is a fixed blade.
My dad sewed up a guy in the ER who came in holding his own guts like a gunny sack
He won the knife fight
They don’t all die in the hospital😂

Actually designed for the Filipino grip where you rest your thumb on the spine. Michael Janich mentioned it in his video about the evolution of the Yojimbo 2.
@grey_d 1792 hence the evolution of this knife so it is used in that manner.
When reaching into your pocket, your hand will slide along the back of the handle. The only way that your hand would slide off of the spine of the blade is if: 1 You have it set up for a lefthanded person and carry it in your front right pocket or 2 You have it set up for a righthanded person and carry it in your front left pocket.
Pretty ok blade. Killed 3 ninjas today and about 5 yesterday and still cuts through boxes at work.
That's the advantage of a ware resistant steel like s30v
"Stabbing people instructor"!!! Your the best Nick lol
roooofl
BirdShot IV I love your laugh
BirdShot IV *you're
I'm subbed to a lot of knife reviewers, I just found this channel and nick you are by far the best! Your voice is entertaining and your reviews are very informative! Great stuff!
Nick always brings the goods. Glad to see an EDC-focused review on the Yojimbo.
Something else that makes me lean away from the Yojimbo 2 is the fact that it IS designed as a weapon. That would be much harder to defend in court, no matter how scary the other ninja is.
Agreed. In the event of an actual self defense situation where there's even a hint of question, the DA isn't going to look kindly on your Spyderco Civilian.
"What? I just use it to open mail."
This is fair. I feel like it’s good practice to never escalate the weapons in a fight but also prepare for the worse. You want to throw some punches? Sounds fun. You pull out a knife? Well fuck I guess we’re doing this. Gun? You better be quick
I love to fart in crowded elevators.
Going back toy your old videos and hearing your character voice still a work in progress is crazy.
In my training we we taught the absolute best defense against a knife is..distance. Feet don't fail me now!
That's a stellar saying. I'm going to steal that, if it's OK.
It's public domain so go for it.
throwing knives?
JOSEPH check mate 😂😂😂😂
Who is this "we we"
Always appreciate your perspective! You’re one of the few reviewers that actually saves me money-“the bad” and “the ugly” often stop me from impulsively pulling the trigger. Thank you.
Nick...how do you only have 4.6 thousand subs??? you make great videos and your voice alone should bring in hundreds of subs a day
Hah, thanks muchly. I blame a conspiracy with Michael Janich, Ernie Emerson, and Cold Steel.

I'm pretty sure Marfione is part of that Axis. Apologies to Benchmade.
I think its because of the voice
55k today
This knife is so badass, it’s scary! And that’s why I just ordered one. 😂
I agree, not the best EDC, but in my case it will function as one just fine!
You really don’t need to be well trained to use this in self defense. It was designer for stand off and slash type things. The tip hits with all the force and does the work for you. Watch a 5 minute demonstration. Seriously is not a karambit. It’s a big box cutter.
P.
My GF just bought me one of these for my birthday after hearing me once saying I wanted one to match my fixed blade Ronin. In my excitement I had to go back and look at reviews I watched years ago. It's a piece I have had in my cart many times over the past few years but never pressed the button on. Aside from being the coolest BD present I ever got, I have to say I really dig the knife. I am not a stabbing professional either but it certainly does look competent for the role, much like my Ronin which lives in my home office work desk and has had a long career of opening envelopes and boxes. So far it is more impressive to non knife enthusiasts in a "bad ass" sort of way, than my Benchmade Fact, PM2, or anything else I got so there's that.
Don't test it on a cucumber! Pork ribs would be a lot more along the lines of intended use lol.
Your review are fantastic but your voice is what draws! That voice is a blessing from God!
"Years of experience" to defend yourself with a sharpened piece of metal, funny. As if literally anyone can't just pick up a knife and know how to use it to defend themselves better than using their hands. 14 year old girl the other day grabbed two kitchen knives and defended herself from a home intruder. Sheeple thinking you need to be thee most tactical special operations trained instructor to use a literal 10,000 year old tool is hilarious and very showing of modern masculinity.
The sharp bit goes in the soft bit of the bad guy. Repeat as many times as possible until bad guy stops moving.
got two yesterday, one flips well one not so but I love them so I ordered a third.
You got THREE?
Might as well order me one while you're at it
Ive read a quote (author unknown as of roght now) that said "The loser of a knife fight dies in the street, the winner dies in the hospital".
I've always loved that quote.
You are very funny and entertaining Nick! Thanks!
I love Yojimbo. The Akira Kurosawa/Toshiro Mifune partnership was awesome.
The knife is neat too.
fatmanandschizard love your pic :)
Not made for slicing cucumbers lol. Ment for slicing arms and necks
Nick Shabazz-pointing out the flaws so I don’t have to waste my money and find out later. Love it keep it up
Hello from Italy, me too if I think on stabbing people with my knife I feel bad, I'm sure it is a shocking experience, devastating. But consider this: last summer two tourists from Poland in vacation hear in Italy, a couple, during the night they went for a walk on the beach. A group of 6 or 8 immigrants from Nigeria submit him and violated her many times. I think In a situation like this, I HAVE to fight for protect my woman, it is better to die fighting instead of continue living knowing a group of Nigerians violated my girlfriend. (Not because they are from Nigeria, just because they are criminals, of course in Nigeria there is a lot of good people). But unfortunately He had not a knife, because in Italy it is forbidden....in a situation like this you need a knife, the yojimbo 2 can be a good option, and it is not important if you are stubbed, You are a man and you have to use it.
Sad to hear ,hear in spain its also very restricted to carry knives ,but also...think about it...all the blood guts everithing ...killing for self defense puts you in a situation that you must be mentally prepared ,and train a lot .Thats because masters of self defense can be so calm ,they know how to REALLY mess up someone.
This guy sounds like one of those old timey wise guys.
5:45 Nick, the way you are describing carrying this knife in the pocket would suggest that you carry it against the left seam of the right front pocket... Why would you do this??? You are always best to carry tip-up so the blade of the knife abutts the seam of the pocket... So this means that if you were to be carrying the knife in the right-front pocket of your jeans in a tip up configuration, you would carry the knife on the right side of the pocket (closest to your right side of your body.) You should carry the knife abutting the left seam (closest to your groin) this is bad.
There's a great video on youtube in which the Yojimbo designer explains this design.
Yes, it explains the features along with their purpose and, as such, how it really is a beautiful knife with a great deal of thought put into it. I love mine.
Almost always agree with nick but almost every negative he pointed out on this knife are positive to me
Great looking knife. What a blade!
"it's better at venting entrails or some ridiculous mall ninja thing" xD
The PM2 and the YJ2 both have the compression lock and similar blade stock..but the YJ, when u compare random examples, tends to have more of a glassy action ..I think the extra weight at the spine just gives the blade more momentum...but it also feels like there is a better level of finishing on the interior parts...and the detent, you can feel the detent ball tension while the blade drops shut as well...but it’s very smooth
Are there any stinkers out there?....or
They used this knife with meat and steaks wrapped in fabric and compared against other knives. This beat all knives and is best for self defense
It ain't hard
Yep. People underestimate the sheer destructiveness, lethality, as well as utilitarian capabilities of the Wharncliffe. This guy did nothing but sh*t on this knife the entire time.
Hilarious and informative as always! Thank you Nick. As to the self-defense comments I agree and if I was going to use a knife for self-defense it'd be my K-Bar fixed blade I took home when I got out of the USMC. For self-defense I carry a firearm and OC spray instead. Folders are great for task not so much for self-defense. If a person is serious about self-defense with a knife it most always benefit them to use a fixed blade.
Agreed, however in CA (specifically southern CA) it's nigh-impossible to get a CCW (Ventura and Orange counties are getting better) and fixed blades are problematic (must carry openly and can't be carried at schools or federal buildings) so most folders 4" or less are safe.
I would be a bit concerned that the blade tip would break off if used as a edc (we all sometimes try do things we shouldn't with our knifes) and also, to me, it looks too much like one of them carpet cutters.
Thanks Nick for all your great vids.
That knife is fantastic. It is a "specialty"...It doesn't do everything like a PM2 might. It ain't about that. I had Yojimbo2 engraved on it, in "Edwardian Script" and replaced the silver clip with a black one from a Manix. The lock and free-swinging blade make it a Joy to fondle. Plus it's so ugly, it's pretty. Just buy it. YES...the tip is needle-like and delicate SO = don't break it.
Always enjoy your reviews Nick thx.
This is an interesting knife. If it didn't have the weapon compromises you pointed out I'm sure it would be an even better EDC'er as it has a utility feel to it. Before you even described the design and designer me not being familiar with this knife I thought it was going to be a utilitarian style blade. Oh and it just makes me or so happy to see that Razel make a few cameos!!!!
Batman is my brother and he just gifted me this knife lol as he handed it to me he told me you reviewed this exact knife. Pretty cool.
I really love my Yojimbo 2, and I carry it alongside my MKM Voxnaes Isonzo clip point. I live in a really, really bad area, so I usually carry my Yojimbo 2 when I have to walk somewhere. My neighborhood is so bad, my rain gutters were ripped off to be scrapped by thieves. lol. So the Yojimbo 2 is very viable in my life.
You cannot retract this blade back into the scales until it has tasted broccoli, or the curse of 1000 shinobi dog hair spells will be "unleashed" upon you.
one of my favorite..
still i do trained a bit with a knife - still the yo2 is more utility for me then defensive...
still a great knife!
I got this knife and was shocked how good it works in edc. It really does..busting up boxes all kinds of stuff.
"Yo! Jimbo!!"
A Japanese name?
Good review as always. This one's on my list - there's a lot of aggressive ninja-envelopes in the allies I hang out in.
Yojimbo means bodyguard in Japanese.
only thing i miss on that knife is wave feature for faster deployment, feels darn good in da hand. good review as usual mate :)
I’ve seen a few modded yojimbos with waves
I love the way you say Kaaarummbits 😂 12:12
Easy to conceal a folding knife but not easy to conceal my hand-built Samurai Katana, In England were not allowed a flipper knife we can't carry any knife with a locking blade, all we can carry is sub 3inch counting the tang then you have to have a good reason. The Yojimbo is a Great knife I have this one and the blacked out one, the Canis is a Great knife too
This is my favorite Spyderco knife of mine. It’s not my favorite every day carry, that goes to my maxamet para 3. This is my favorite unique, self defense, fidget spinner. It’s definitely not a utility knife. The tip breaks too easy. If you watch the video about Michael Janic, he explains why it’s designed how it is. It’s pretty interesting. Long story short… It’s mainly my backup to my 9 millimeter pewdiepew.
Best line ever Nick saying “Im not a self defense guy” LMFAO!!!!
12:07 I actually do like kerambit/hawkbill shapes for a lot of EDC stuff. Opening packages of any kind is ridiculously easy with one. It has a lot of the same advantages and trade offs as a wharncliffe, but exaggerated. I imagine blade geometry as a continuum with drop point and Persian on one end (convex edge/points back), hawkbill at the other (concave edge/points forward) and wharncliffe in the middle (straight edge).
This knife was never designed to cut cucumbers.
You really don't know M. Janich's approach to designing a knife.. Definitely not a "stabby ninja" lol..
Take a weekend to sign up for his introductory MBC self defense class. You might actually LOVE IT...My Dad and I did.
Get a good taste of what Mike's serving, then come back and review this knife.
Cheers!
the Yo 2 is my EDC knife it works great . it also compliments both my Glock 19 and the S&W Shield. Don't worry fully licensed and certified instructor in most things that make people leak. ;-)
Don't get what you mean when u say you couldn't use it as a self defense tool because you sent trained in and way.. I don't get that .. if someone is about you hurt you simply cut them .. reach out and cut them .. no self defense training needed .. not that I would be buying it for that but when I get a knife I like to think ok if I get into a bad situation can I simply cut or stab and run.. other wise it's a edc knife for edc..idk it kinda bothers me when bb act like because that arnt trained that means they don't have sense enough to cut someone and run...
Does everyone else in the knife community use their pocket knife for food prep? I’ve literally never done it. In years. Even camping I have a some of outdoorsy fixed blade kitchen knife.
I use my pm2 for food prep or esee 3
Thanks for your reviews. You go to the details that are important -- both form and function issues. The format you chose (good, bad, ugly) is excellent. And on top of that you got a very refined sense of humor. About this video -- I will start to look at my Yojimbo 2 with other eyes. Congrats!
I love your reviews as they are very informative. With that said please bear in mind that both Yojimbo knives were designed strictly as self defense weapons, not as an edc knife for every day tasks.
Yes, I think I mentioned that I was missing the point. Remember that some people want both. I review the less weapony side.
A couple of thougts on this. The rear detent lock thing doesnt seem a good idea,,locking from that side of the blade n all. And the concave or is it convex shape of the blade - or is it called hollow grind - well it seems itd be abit awkward to resharpen.
It's designed for self defense only. It slices human flesh, not tomatoes..... Just saying. Good review as always but, you don't really know how it was designed. It's the best for counter slicing.the thumb rests on top of blade
if all my college professors taught and sounded like this, I'd never fall asleep. so interesting and informative! why do I keep hearing gilbert godfried x billy crystal, haha, j/k. great video!
This is more a Seax then a true Wharncliffe
It's seaxy indeed.
Nick I want to start by stating that I enjoy your videos and feel that you contribute to the knife community immensely. This is probably the worst review from you that I have seen. First, the knife is meant for self defense. Why would you review it under different uses? You wouldn't review a straight razor as a chef's knife. It should b reviewed based on its designed purpose. Second, I felt that there was a bit of a disrespectful tone towards Mr. Janich and people that choose to DEFEND themselves with a knife. There is a big difference between self defense and "stabbing people instructor". Also the knife is designed for slicing, not stabbing. In conclusion, i feel that if you would have taken the time to perform very minimal research, a much more relevant and educational review could have been done. I still enjoy your vids and find you very entertaining.
By the way....when the knife is in your pocket the blade width doesn't "GUIDE" your hand down to allow you to grab your wallet or phone or whatever....right handed tip-up position (how you have yours in this video) would mean the blade is up against the seem of the pocket.....making it harder, not easier, to grab said item from your pocket. Just had to correct you on that mistake. Overall i think this knife is a little much & feel like if you have one you are obviously over compensating for the lack of balls....
This just came out in CruWear, HRC about 63. I just bot one.
aye!! 3k subscribers!! good job dude!
Thanks!
Well well well how far has our Nick come. About to reach 150k soon
Nick The Ninja, new Tactical knife channel?. It's got a nice ring to it.
This was not meant as an edc tool, so those “negatives” make no sense, it’s like trying to use a corvette for off roading, it’s not meant for it.
Love the content by the way nick!
"Stabbing people instructor" lmao
I had to fast forward to see if that was your real voice... LOL it is haha!!!!!
Audio Fella one of the reasons we sub!
my yojimbo is too stiff, I cannot open it with my middle finger, any advise?
" it's better for venting intrails" Nice
A knife is a knife, doesn't matter if it's designed for fighting or food preparation. In other words if it's sharp, it's useful. And self defense is a serious enough issue, sometimes running away isn't an option, ask any woman who's been raped, im sure if they had a knife, with or without training, they'd have used it to get away. And that's what self defense is, gaining the upper hand to get away. I'm sure a rape victim would have loved to just run away. So just beware, your advice about running away may seem simple, but unfortunately very naive to expect situations like that to be predictable and simple. I generally like your reviews about knives, unfortunately the backhanded approach to self defense rubbed me the wrong way. EDC is about having a tool handy for cutting and, god forbid, giving one the edge to, again, as you said before, run away. That what self defense is, not going head to head with "the bad guy" like Bruce lee or Jackie Chan.
michael meissner well said . I got asthma I'm gonna use my last breath trying to take you with me not running .
Plus one, Its not that you couldn't use this knife to defend yourself. Its that you have to know how to defend yourself. When I was I the army my old Sergeant said to me "If a dogs gonna bite you he don't bark first" Nicks point was valid, most would be better served with a knife designed for EDC'ing. If s++t hits the fan then you use it but this knife is perpose driven. That mean compromise.
I agree with your review. I gave mine to my boss and he runs a ebay store and uses it alot. He is not a knife guy like us, but he likes having a nice knife. He loves it and it stays sharp for a long time.
Nick, you are a Ninja.......wise guy...... thanks for another fine fair balanced review.
Pov: Italian American gangster reviews knife
this has been my edc for 4 years now. excelent blade.
agentjwa wow 4 years?! You are very loyal
Hi Nick, what can I do to make my Yojimbo 2 open easier to open, really stiff to open.
Check out my "How to Maintain your PM2" video. It's not exactly the same, but there are many similarities in how to oil and lube and adjust.
Hey nick can you show us how you wear your knife in you pocket? Im guessing you keep the knife more to the far left as opposed to the right like most people
Boy , you dumb.
I don't agree with you on blade length being too long and I do not agree with you on having a full flat grind instead of the Hollow Grind. Other than that like the review.
Hey I'm a new subscriber . Well this is my first video to be honest. I have to ask have you checked out the Cold Steel Talwar at all ? I have the 4" blade version. And in my opinion it blows this knife away in every way. What are your thoughts of any on the Talwar ?
Damn it Nick! Why must you be the Voice of Reason all the time! I (like you) have been on the fence for years with the Yo2. I love wharnies and sheepsfoots (sheepfeet?). I was hoping to be wooed by your review, but great minds think alike and you have "Nickpicked" me out of another knife I would have let sit in my drawer and not in my pocket. I love you and hate you for it. Keep it up and never do it again.
Hah, My deepest apologies! Just make sure you only fall for automatics and you'll be safe from the Nickpick!
I used to be a ninja until I took an arrow to the knee... I really like this blade shape though. I'm no knife fighter either, although "stick them with the pointy end" seems apropos. That's too many fantasy quotes for one comment, isn't it??
skyrim, game of thrones 🤓
What about the Delica "Wharncliff "? That's my new favorite edc.(serrated)
Love my spyderedge wharnie Delica!
Hey nick, I have about $200 and was looking to getting either 1 nice knife or 2 decent knives. The manix 2 has my interest but it seem like a whole lot of knife, along with that been looking a a BM grip but don't want to end up paying another $60 on custom scales. I would like to hear your opion. Great video!
The Manix is a lot of knife, no doubt. But it outclasses the Grip by a mile. Maybe the PM2 or Native? Or the ZT0450?
+Nick Shabazz I have been eyeing the pm2 and a hand full of zt. thank you for your thoughts
Rides nicely? Man the yo was probably my least favorite in pocket ive had thus far (in my child sized jeans). I justify the superleaf by saying at least it is better than the yo lol.
I do also agree that the s30v on both yos i had was SUPER chippy
Would you do a disassembly video of this knife please? :)
I preordered the yo jumbo and have the yojimbo
Yojimbo means body guard
Any blade play
Nick, the designer carries this every day for BOTH self protection and EDC. He carries a companion Delica, as well, for finer work. BTW, the whole self-defense thing, as you mention, is not your foray, so best not to provide uneducated opinions on that. In this world there actually are people who need and are serious about knives for self protection (listen to Michael's story when you have a chance). If you're providing an EDC review, then "stick" with that. You're a well loved knife reviewer, but you may want to check you glibness at the door from time to time...
Amen! Well put and THE most appreciated comment I've read so far as to what Nick doesn't get here w this review..
Michael Janich, PM this guy & get him real clear about quite a few things he doesn't obviously understand about real life self defense using a knife before he puts his other foot in his mouth..
If I'm down to a knife as a weapon, I'm getting the hell out of there.
Self defense is not mall ninja. Growing up in NYC in the 1980’s, (crack epidemic) one would carry a knife for protection. We certainly couldn’t legally carry a handgun. Mocking self defense users in a pompous way is not a good look. Being a knife nerd and collecting knives for fun is much more laughable.
Kerambit shaped blades are surprisingly practical.
“Poking just the tip in the box”. Was that on purpose because you used it perfectly....
I’ve looked at this for awhile just wanted it in another steel other than s30v which is a good steel but wanted something not used on everything that’s a little easier to sharpen 😁
