- For a long time, most Aston Villa fans would automatically pick Mark Bosnich as their go-to-goalkeeper in a best Villa XI of the Premier League era. But, has a certain Argentine goalkeeper thrown his hat into the ring now?

1:09 I saw Bozzy Eat Two Cornetto's in one go, in a pre season Friendly nr Plymouth Could Martinez do that
I can eat 3 cornettos
Jimmy Rimmer was always my No1 but Emi Martinez has now taken over for me.
Tough decision, we've had some good ones, Bossy,Spinksy,Rimmer,Friedel,James(on his day),but Bossy was poor at kicking but great at everything else,Spink was solid all round,Rimmer is a legend,Friedel held the clean sheet record until Emi broke it,James was a monster on his day but had those weird mistakes in him(some bad luck though tbf),Emi for me has everything that all these keepers had combined. Close call between Bossy & Emi for me but i think Emi just pips him & i hate saying that cus Bossy was my Fave for years being a mainly 90's Villain. We have the worlds Number 1,what more can ya say. 🤷♂️ If we win something in the next few years & get CL this season, it's gotta be Emi Martinez 💜💙
Martinez is level with Friedel on the clean sheet record, both have 15 in a season.
I remember Bozzie's kicking a bit differently to Matt. He would stand aside to let Teale take them.
Clearly, Emi is the best keeper in our history. We're very lucky to have him
Sirloin: medium rare
Ribeye: medium
I think bozzy, or any other keeper in villa history, should be flattered by being compared to Martinez. Given how the game has evolved, especially in terms of speed, Emi is way above anyone that's been before him. And I used to play in the street wearing Bosnich jersey - absolutely adored him.
Both. Different times.
Bosnich was an inspiration to me as a young lad, I'll always remember getting a bit of goalkeeper training from him at a Villa "soccer" camp in the 90s. He was a hero to me back then.
Martinez is a phenomenal modern goalkeeper. Definitely my favourite since Bosnich. He has consistently impressed and improved since he joined. I don't have heros anymore, but if I did, he'd be one for sure.
My top 4 are 1 Jimmy rimmer
2 Martinez
3 spink
4 bosnich
Bozzy definitely benefited from the times as our cup games tended to go to the dreaded shootout .
I’m not saying he wouldn’t have still made it but I do think it helped add extra sauce . From what I remember, around the time boz signed, there was a big thing around keeper for some reason with the ultra bright kits and odd , inventive ways of shot blocking .
As much as I loved boz , he definitely benefited from the times so Martinez for me
Emi is Villas best ever keeper in terms of ability, in terms of presence, influence on team mates, ball distribution and penalty saves.
Had some great keepers at Villa Park but Emi Martinez is next level and the 2nd biggest reason behind Unai Emery as to Villas sucess
I grew up with bosnich and was always my clear favourite keeper but Emi is just a whole other beast, I think Bozzy himself would agree too
Great topic ! Hope you can both do similar topics at the end of season when we are thirsty for Villa content - Both great shot stoppers - lets not forget Tom Heaton, great keeper and great Villa servant for the short period he was with us who was superb! Only to be replaced by the Worlds no 1. ..Matinez.
Our podcast will continue right through the summer yeah
What about Jimmy Rimmer? He was quality. And Spinksy had a pretty good trophy in his locker...
It’s not even close, Jim Cumbes was the keeper when I started supporting the Villa and I would have said Jimmy Rimmer or Mark Bosnich was the best before Emi. But Martinez is one of the best if not the best goalkeeper in the world. Whilst Bosnich was great in his day he would not get in any team in the Premier league now. You guys have bad memories because Bozzy couldn’t pass or even kick the ball straight. We used to go in th horrors when he had to kick it 😂😂😂
Jimmy Rimmer n Nigel Spink were my era also cus we won European cup
Bosnich was my hero as a kid ever since blues away in that coca cola cup run, the game v Sunderland in that run is still my favourite gk performance, I still have that famous rainbow shirt. Emi has taken over for me now as my favourite villa keeper and im a nostalgic person, he just needs silverware for the cherry on top
Technically David James was the best although he had some errors in him. I remember he could thrown just as far as he could kick though which was FAR! Also his punches would clear the halfway line. Beast of a keeper but just switched off sometimes and seemed naturally unlucky. Bosnich could make almost impossible saves and was great at organising his defence. Kicking was suspect though. Dibu is tremendous but it's hard to rank any of those three above the others. Also a shout out to Friedel who was always solid. Sorenson would have been in there also but he always got beaten at his near post!
Wrong question: Martinez or Rimmer?
Having been around since Rimmer and Spink I think Bozzy was something else BUT Martinez is just phenomenal. He's got everything. Bosnich, to me, tarnished his reputation when he jumped ship to United.
So it's Martinez then Bosnich, Spink then Rimmer. Martinez is miles ahead of all of them despite his lack of domestic medals.
Tough choice we have had some great goalies at villa , spinks rimmer etc 😊
... Schmeichel.
I grew up watching Nigel Spink and Mark Bosnich both brilliant goalkeepers Bossie was something else but Emi Martinez is truly a world class goalkeeper and I love him. UTV
Very hard to compare Era's. 90's versus today are two different sports practically. Like comparing Keane and Rice. While Keane could adapt to todays game and Rice could probably adapt to yesteryear we'll never know.
Bosnich always terrified me when the ball was passed back to him. I remember a few occasions where he missed the ball and had to run back to his line to stop an embarrassing own goal. But he was immense at shot stopping and claiming crosses, and bowling the ball out for the counter attack. The thing is, Emi is just as good at those things and can play with the ball at his feet, so Emi wins it for me
Bosnich was a great shot stopper, but he was a terrible kicker/distributor of the ball. He would not suit modern "play from the back" football.
Martinez is an all-round keeper. Also think Friedel was better.
Followed villa in the Bozzy dates home and away great reactions but TBH his kicking was very iffy , he would really struggle in todays game , but a big character but went to MAN U and unfortunately struggled
A good topic for these 'all time' debates gents:
Choose an Aston Villa best ever PL 23 man squad with MAX 1 player per country.
Throws up some nice questions
Watkins or Grealish or Barry?
McGrath or Staunton?
Friedel or Lihaj!!
Pick as a proper squad, so 2 keepers, 8 defenders, 4 strikers etc.
Tricky!
Petrov Yorke and McGinn are certs, go from there.
We’ve done something similar to this already!
@ClaretBluePod Fair enough!
Emi squad has added so many more 'best Aston Villa player' options to the debate.
Irish Villa fans enjoying life these days!
Nigel Spink! Jimmy Rimmer! Both great and lots of silverware!
I'd go for Martinez. Astonishing skill and great mentally. Remember Bozzy, he was great, but Martinez is a world beater.
At the relatively young age of 69 I can say that Martinez is head and shoulders above Bosnich. His control of the box, his liberal application of the dark arts, and his ability to get into the heads of penalty takers is without compare. I loved Bosnich in his hey day. But I love Martinez much more today. And yes, I suggest a world cup trumps any other silverware!! ❤
Medium rare with pepper sauce is the only way to eat a good steak.
Good on the cooking, not for me though, peppercorn 🤢
Loved bosnich ,but this isn't even a question for me, Martinez is different gravy .utv
I have to disagree with you Matt. Having had my best times as a Villa fan during the 90's i can honestly say that Bosnich was dreadful with the ball at his feet. I rememebr him kicking the ball straight to Shearer, i think, for a tap in. The Holte used to hold its breathe when the ball was played back to him.
I think Bosnich was maybe more athletic but Emi has more presence and better shot stopper overall. Freidel was another exceptional keeper, Schmeical was amazing but we got him at the end of his career
I'd mention Nigel Spink. If not for Shilton/Clemence, he could have been the England keeper for
Emi is the best in the world at catching the ball, saving one on one situations and penalties, he's also top 5 in the world with the ball at his feet. He really is the best goalkeeper in the world imo I also missed his positioning which is world class also
Bosnich was good but wasn't world class. I also think Les Sealey was Bosnich's equal.
I’m 57 and watched Bossie live in probably 95% of his games for Villa. He was a top player but not even close to Martinez. Emi is not just my favourite keeper ever he’s my favourite Villa player ever
EMI is as close as you are going to get as an absolute peak performing Manuel Neuer. I think this is the comparison we should be making . Similar feet ability, stature and demeanour
Legend has it klinsman is still asleep in the 18 yard box due to a beautiful catch (knee to the forehead) emi hasn’t sent anyone to sleep yet… 1-0 bozzy
We had Peter Enckelmann once!
Bosnich was probably my favourite Villa player after McGrath as a kid but Martinez is way ahead of him as a footballer. They were/are both big characters and great at saving penalties, but in every other respect Martinez is better.
Martinez the better keeper (can same with a lot of current crop). I think winning something puts any player into cult status and bosnich does pip him there same with a lot from That 90s era and they will always have players be “up there” as best in position because of success. This team now has potential to be that new benchmark.
Writing as watching - your closing statement for me is what most would agree.
Rare with peppercorn sauce
Boz struggled to kick past the halfway line as I remember. Shaun Teale taking GKs! This is from memory as a 10, 12 year old, may be wide of the mark. Pun intended!
I have my steak medium with a bit of mustard.
Bosnich confidence and arrogance powder based !! I’m from 70s and remember Jim Crumbs… so without doubt Martinez 💪👏 UTV
I don't see why he'd need to win anything to be declared the best. His talent speaks for itself.
Does The World Cup count as winning a trophy? 😜 Loved Bosnich but Martinez gets the nod. Both great stoppers, but Bosnich's kicking was always a bum-twitchin moment
Did Bosnich ever wear an upside-down lion on his badge? :)
Martinez for me. Love Bosnich, but Emi shades it. Emi is much bigger than Bosnich and more of a presence. Also better at mind games
Football did exist before Premier league..if go across the 50years.i have watched football.no one better than Spink...Out of these two though ..Martinez...Bosnich was a great stopper but he could chuck one in occasionally..didn't always command his area...Martinez apart from being bit of a dick..he has less weaknesses to his game on the trophy thing its irrelevant to a keepers ability but if you want to make it relevant..then we are talking about the best keeper when actually playing for Villa..Martinez winning a world cup for Argentina..means absolutely zero when it comes to comparing performances of two keepers at Villa and on a personal note i couldnt give two fucks about what he has won outside of this club
jimmy rimmer over martinez simply because the conditions and technology were a lot worse back then and therefore it was harder to be a super goal keeper then than now
Qualifying for Champions League (with Villa) and a European trophy? It's gotta beat 2 league cups.
Martinez! Bosnich is behind him, Sims, Fridel, Rimmer.
Bozzy was defo a loose cannon . I'm sure I remember him doing a nazi salute at White heart Lane 😮
It is not, and never been, a contest really has it...?
Emi can do everything that bozzie could but Bozzie couldn't do things Emi can. Martinez is clear for me.
Martinez needs an iconic keeper kit. Until he has a bus seat kit, he'll never be the number one of the number ones.
Bozzy was good but he couldn't kick
Bosnich is still above Martinez as Villa’s best keeper.
Bosnich couldn’t kick
EMI is the best keeper that's ever played for VILLA, well in my lifetime, but I've only been watching VILLA since 1980😂😂 NO doubt bosnich was no1,friedel was SHIT as was James, guzan or anyone else!UTV
