I just love the fact that Kotobe (correct me if that's wrong) likely made the M on Mario's cap MORE angular out of spite. That's exactly the sort of thing I would do.
I feel this had more to do when McDonald's had Mario 3 toys. There was a bunch of production art made for the happy meal boxes and McDonald's probably asked Nintendo to add the arches to his hat for the happy meal art. I think there's some translation goodness going on, people are getting some events crossed.

I don't know if Game Theory started it or just spread it further, but the manual says and I quote "If you come across mushrooms who have been turned into bricks or made invisible, they reward you a powerboost. With each boost Mario changes into a different, more powerful Mario, as shown below."
In actuality only the bricks that have hidden items in them are toads.

To be honest it's a nice to hear that for once Huge company Didn't try to sue another company to an oblivion because of a similarity, but encouraged it and gave the go ahead to the thing nintedo was on purpose trying to avoid. It's a nice change of phase.
The crazy thing is that when Nintendo went on to make Wario, I think they made the W in his hat blue to ensure that no character in the game had a letter that resembled the McDonald's logo in any capacity.

Robotnik/Eggman is based on Mario anyhow, sometimes when I point that out idiots will say "No, he's based on Theodore Roosevelt!" but he's actually 'inspired' by both. Specifically the one from SMB3 (the most current version during Sonic1's development) who, due to the 3 color palette, had a red shirt and black pants. He also runs with his arms out, much in the same way. Later, in the cartoons, they also gave Robotnik a yellow cape, as if to update him to SMW Mario.

i actually think it's really neat that miyamoto's mario design was kept practically the same. not only was it a solid design to begin with, but it was practically his main idea baby. i bet it felt astounding to him that one of the greatest animators of japan decided that he made a good design for the character.

Honestly I'm glad they're still working together to this day. I tend to often become interested in what McDonald's does with their Happy Meal toys and see if they've come up with a cool gimmick for what Mario's line does, and I also tend to enjoy playing Super Mario Maker on my Wii U while having fries.
