I am not a pro, but a pretty skilled owner. This video was very helpful and I really appreciate it a lot. About 3 hours to tear everything down, 1 hour to get a few missing parts (cover nut fell in a crack in the cement and I did not have enough O rings for the front sensors) and about 4 hours to get everything back together. The gasket kit that I got required that I remove about 1/4" of gasket material off of the top (the part that goes into the cover) for it to seat right. Recommend a good telescoping magnet and a swivel head ratchet. Dealer could not believe that I was doing this and said that half of their techs would not be able to get this done on time. May the karma gods smile upon you well for taking the time to help others with this vide.
I’d say no, for that you’ll need to remove your intake manifold and then secondary air injection valve then you’ll be able to do it. During valve cover gaskets replacement there is no extra room for it
i would have gotten the correct valve gasket. Mine has small ridges at the base of the gasket that prevents complete seating but there must be a reason.
Very helpful and detail informative video, I just successfully did my 08 E66 driver side VCG & TCG with viewing your procedures two or three times before I started. it took me about two half days total 8-9 hours for one side. the first try without remove the fuel injectors stuck me one hour or more and after remove the fuel injector it is quite easy to take VC out w/o touch e. f. sensor. so I must say I did every single steps you did make VCG & TCG replacement a easy and straight forward job. Thanks again for shooting such a detail diy video.
After watching your video a couple of timers, I just successfully completed VCG ON MY 2008 Alpina B7. The entire job took about 17 hours to completely put everything back together and the car runs just fine. However, I have to recheck the passenger side for a little leak coming from the rear of the cover. Thanks you.
I have 2002 BMW 745i I had a spark plug tube that had gone bad. A couple of quotes $700 plus. Decided I have the tools and the time followed this video and now I'm back up and running I appreciate you Zen thanks for sharing
Great video and appreciated! Unfortunately I had to redo this job using this video after paying a shop to complete it 18 months ago. The idiots that completed the request seemed to have an affinity to Perm-a tex. I found it everywhere, even inside the spark plug tubes. It was everywhere... There were two stripped lower nuts to my surprise. In the end I cleaned every part I touched, replaced all o-ring seals and feel better about the future performance of the vehicle. Without the video I'm not too sure my level of excitement to do this job was there! Again, thank you for sharing your skills!
Man you're the best, I'm not an expert but you made it looks easy job and honestly I've learned a lot just watching, you've encouraged me to do it on my BMW gasket, Thank you man.
I just replaced the valve cover gaskets on my X5 and my number 5,6,7 and 8 cylinders are misfiring and in addition to that oil is leaking from the engine passenger side. Help me out here man, you're the best that I've seen on UA-cam.
Regarding the leak most likely gasket didn’t sit right, and for misfire, check every coil connection, retrace your steps and make sure everything is connected properly
Trying to replace my head gasket on 2002 745li...do you have a channel or anything and I have the gasket kit that comes with everything but I’m worried about the timing part...do I need the tool kit for timing??
Did not expect to hear Russian language in the video :D Thanks for the great content guys! This makes me confident that I can service an N62 engine myself and can afford something like an e63. These are incredibly cheap these days!
Great video my bro. Super detailed and VERY HELPFUL! The only feedback I can give as a videographer is to try to record with auto-focus turned OFF. It makes it very hard to see the small spaces and details with the camera going in and out of focus from auto-focus function. When shooting very close in these types of videos setting the focus manually will work very well. An easy and basic way to do this is to stand in the general distance you will be shooting, use zoom to zoom in all the way to a shiny object, focus with focus ring manually, then zoom back out. Now you should have a good general focus point that will work for the whole shoot. If you want to come in for some close shots, just go in as far as needed before it goes out of focus and slightly move focus ring to adjust for the shorter distance and move back to where it was when you pull back out to the original distance. Hope that makes sense. Basic but super helpful and it will provide more quality in your amazing videos. Thanks again!!
Great informative video! I enjoyed the step-by-step instructions included and what kind and size of tools you were using. Helps a lot! Thank you and please keep making great videos like this one!

As Arthur said...good call. Wife bought a 2008 650i convertible with a little over 100k on it about 8 months ago. It has been either sitting in my garage (in my spot) or sitting in the grass next to my shop for most of this time. Started puffing white smoke with acceleration, especially after idling for a few seconds (read as sitting at stop light) about 2 months after purchase. Then, it decided to start leaking coolant...while sitting still...with the engine off. She finally had it hauled to the repair shop a couple of days ago. She had purchased a power train and labor warranty good for one year, so we figured we were okay. Nope. Come to find out, pretty much every f-ing gasket on this thing needs replaced. Guess what the warranty doesn't cover? The car is beautiful. It's just poorly engineered. Doesn't even have a dipstick! You're supposed to trust their on board computer. Last time I checked, computers were not where the Germans excelled. I think I'll just stick with the basic, old reliable brands. Wife has a 2006 Acura TL with 268k and it still runs like a champ. Has a couple of minor issues that will cost about 15% of what this thing is going to cost to fix. And I've got a 2012 Chevy HD with Duramax with 161k that has been awesome. Hard to over engineer a diesel and make it a turd. Guess that's why they don't make very many.

Pulled the valve cover a few times to see if something may have snagged but not seeing any visible issue.. any ideas?

The only issue that I'm curently having is that my 06 750Li is having a very rought iddle after putting evything back together. do you have any idea on what could be the cause of this rought iddleling and contant engine shaking?
Is there a speical procedure to putting the valve motors back in? Ive almost got this entire job finished and wanted to make sure if there is a correct way of putting them back in, great video by the way, its been a huge help!
put everything back together and am now getting transmission fault, should i try resetting ecu? also a minor leak from driver side valve cover closer to driver, will try tightning to see if that will fix? any responses will be helpful thanks
I’m mecanic , an did same job yesterday . And the big problem was the spark plug tube because were very very tie and when try to put it back was very difficulty because those tube were expanded and don’t get inside to de holes cap and finally replaced.
Excellent video. Question about the lower E8 bolt on the driver side timing chain cover. My alternator doesn't move as far as yours. There is an idler pully on the bottom of the alternator that hits on the pully just below it. Does you car have that idler pully?
Hmm. That's easier said than done. Thanks for the reply. I was able to get it out (10 minutes ago) with the proper pry bar and some choice words. Oh, and thanks for the super detailed video. I never would have gotten this far without it.
I just stripped the torx 25 (the ones on each side of the valvetronic motor) what is the best way to get them out? Mine was really tight and i sprayed them and was very carefull but they just stripped right away. What is best way to get them out now?.. So far everything else is going good!
@@Zeiten This method worked perfectly, if anyone else have the same problem i suggest doing like Zeiten said. Just try keeping the socket straight over the bolt and hammer it all the way down! i used a 8mm.
Hello. My friend has a 2006 E65. He drove into a mall and parked and shut the car off. Then he realized the sunroof was open. He decided to restart the car so as to not use the battery power. That was 2 weeks ago and the car has not started since. Do you have any suggestions for what the problem could be?
if it cranks but doesn't start might be micro power module, very common issue, also possible starter or fuel pump failure, inspection is absolutely necessary
Can you replace the timing cover gaskets without having to replace the head cover gaskets? I didn’t know much about it and just took my car to a shop and asked to replace the head cover gaskets recently, but still leaking oil. And leaking coolant too. Very frustrated....Thanks for the video!!!
Смотрю видео на английском, что бы подтягивать, думал у меня крыша поехала при фразе "птички поют". Подумал неужели такой автоматизм в голове на перевод😅😅😅
Happy New Year Tim, Thanks for your previous response. I'm almost finished with this job. The gasket kit you sent came yesterday, thx. The question I have relates to the valve adjuster motors and their orientation. When i removed them they both had significant pre-load, especially the passenger side which was loaded well after the thread height of the retaining bolts. Is this normal? I would assume so. However when i reinstall the motors should I screw them all the way down and then install the retaining screws, or should i try to retain some of the previous tension in the threaded shaft? I have heard of engine misfire codes and rough running after removing and re-installing these adjuster motors. Thanks for any insight you can provide. Chip
Tim, Hope you're having a good day. Thanks for the advice...all back together and no codes!...Unfortunately, it looks like this one also has a alternator bracket gasket leak...UGH!...where do you source this gasket(maker) and will I need anything else when i go in there? Thanks Chip
Thanks for the video all tho I broke one of the eccentric sensors by accident I just replaced by them both but it was better to know how to take stuff apart better than breaking everything
I got a small leak on the top of my timing cover gasket for now I’m just going to put gasket maker on it My question : what all do I have to take off or unplug to take off the timing cover ?my car is a 2007 bmw 550i And does this car have Vanos solenoids on both sides so 4 in total 2 on each head ?
Merry Christmas Tim, Hope you are doing well. Quick question. I am doing the same job on a 2007 650i. Wondering if you have any clearance tips on what else I'll need to move out of the way. Looks to be a bit tighter than the 745li. Thanks so much, Chip
Hello great video ! I have a question, my x5 smokes while on idle does that mean I need new valve cover gaskets or what do you think it's the problem ? Thanks for your help and everything you do!
So if the valve cover bolts don’t screw right on , that means it’s not seated properly ? I have one that feels proper but I’m having to put a lot of pressure for the bolts to catch the thread .
On the valve cover there are 3 red tabs in the bottom side of it. I broke one of those red tabs can I order these parts online? What are they called and what is their purpose?
At 31:23 he says that the longer you let it sit the better, so I let mine sit in the sun for 50 years before continuing the job, thinking it would be the best ever, and now my new gasket is dried out and brittle, so I have to get a new gasket again! Thanks a lot Zeiten! Smh 😒
Hi, I replaced my passenger side valve cover gasket but its still leaking at the bottom back cover. I tightened all the bolts until it won’t turn anymore. Please help how can I fix this problem. Thanks.
Oil pressure switch is common spot for oil leak as well as vacuum pump o-ring while everything apart it’s easy to replace and doesn’t cost much, spark plugs replacement depends on when they were changed in this case they were replaced recently and there is no need to change them again just because valve covers are off and it’s easier
Well that’s a very nasty job to do on that V12 engine, that’s for sure. But it’s great that you were able to make such a detailed and descriptive video documenting the entire job so that us amateurs can see and understand how it’s done.
Shame you don't live in the UK, I would invite you to do the same to my 760li V12. Finding someone here to tackle it is near impossible as they view it as too difficult. Even BMW dealers are not interested and also would probably mess it up. 😭😭😭😭
I broke off the tip of my ignition coil, about 2-3CM piece (probably stuck in there around sparkplug) All i got left now is to remove valve cover, can i do that and get the piece out? Or will this be a massive hassle. I already ordered 2 new ignition coils so i dont care that i broke it, im just worried it will be hard to get the stuck piece out of there.
Hard to say, if you remove the valve cover you will have pretty good access to spark plug wells for sure, i would try first to fish it out without valve cover removal for sure
Hi I have a 2004 BMW 745Li I changed out the two cvv valves out do to smoke coming out of tail pipe that did not stop smoke. Everytime I start car it blows smoke and sometimes turns off when car is on and in park do you know what else it can be?
Any trick to put the bottom nuts (smaller) ones back? Cant get them to thread back on the bolts, especially one in the back. Thinking about ordering a couple of longer one's to make it easier. Any suggestions?
Valve cover has to sit properly in order to put those back, you can try using old grommet and then put new ones, after that remove one bolt with old grommet and use new grommet there
Put it all back together and started the car. Smoke coming out of engine after a few minutes. Does it mean gasket didn't seal or may be I overtightened it?.
I was told to disconnect the battery by taking off the positive terminal in front of the engine that included the alternator. Is this right or do I actually have to disconnect the battery completely
I've a question, is blown head gasket means the valve gaskets that you just replaced in the video, or something else, I'm experiencing white smoke and recently coolant leaking and the motor is shaking hard, I thought it's maybe the coils ignitions but I'm not expert. I've BMW 745li 2002. Kindly advice
@@Zeiten unfortunately I don't see from where the leak is coming, I just saw it underneath the car, so how to determine if the issue in the head gasket or the valve head gasket, plus you didn't told me if the chaking motor due to misfires or regarding to the same gasket issue. If you have a video explaining the deference between them, I'd be appreciated if you send me the link. Thank you
Hi, I have a 2005 bmw 645ci with 50k miles. I changed my valve cover gasket, I turned the engine on, idle rough, no response on gas pedal, then checked engine light came on, turned engine off, checked code as follows p0120(throttle /pedal position sensor/switch A circuit), p0123(throttle/pedal position sensor/switch A circuit high) and P0222(throttle/pedal position sensor/switch B circuit low). When I checked the throttle body wiring, the harness wasn't plug in all the way. After I plugged it in all the way, my car would not turn on anymore and dash board light like Christmas tree. Any idea/input will be appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it! I will try to jump start the car. But my dash Board still light up pretty good, when I turn the ignition key, no crank, dash light up like Christmas tree. Do you think it has something to do with my TPS not plugged in all the way when I first started the engine after VCG replaced. Thanks
@@rodrigodalay5875 you'll need to read the codes in me and cas modules, disconnected throttle body won't really affect anything, but its also important to clear all codes
I have 3 questions 1. Did you have to put silicone on the vacuum pump when putting it back? 2. Why was there silicone on the vacuum pump to begin with? 3. Is there an oil pressure switch on the right side also, or only on the left? Thanks
Depends on where you live, here in California 5 or 10w-30(40) castrol edge is perfect, as a rule in general i would say castrol edge, liqui moly or motul are a great choice
@@Zeiten so I took off the VCG and I realize there is green mix with the oil in the top of the gasket. The green is also on the camshaft sensors. Does it sound more like a head gasket problem?
@@shanewynt6089 Hard to say without inspection, take the spark plugs out check for coolant on plugs if it is there then yeah head gasket. Coolant on cam sensor tells me that there is coolant leak somewhere outside, check your coolant hoses, because head gasket leak wouldn't be on cam sensorr
with the battery connected the fuel pump will prime when you open any of the doors. Since he disconnected the fuel return line opening the door would spray fuel everywhere with the battery connected

The only issue that I'm curently having is that my 06 750Li is having a very rought iddle after putting evything back together. do you have any idea on what could be the cause of this rought iddleling and contant engine shaking?
well first of all check if you connected everything back properly, and vanos solenoids are all the way in
it took me a while to figure it out but the rought iddleling was due to a small little hole in one of the crankcase vent valve
Is there a speical procedure to putting the valve motors back in? Ive almost got this entire job finished and wanted to make sure if there is a correct way of putting them back in, great video by the way, its been a huge help!
There is no special procedure for that, just screw them in and that’s it, nothing needs to be done after that at all also
@@Zeiten thank you so much for your quick response, it is greatly appreciated.
Happy to help👍
Gonna work on this in 2 weeks if I have an oil leak can that cause my exhaust to blow white smoke when i accelerate hard while being parked
Can u make a video showing the replacement of the valvetronic motor it would be greatly appreciated
Great video, very detailed, however, if your you have the Valve Cover off, why did you NOT replace the Valve Stem seals???
Wth???
Thanks! Very informative i needed this!
put everything back together and am now getting transmission fault, should i try resetting ecu? also a minor leak from driver side valve cover closer to driver, will try tightning to see if that will fix? any responses will be helpful thanks
Great video, thanks! Why did you replace the oil pressure switch? Can't you just wrap the threads with Teflon tape?
They don't typically leak from the threads. Usually leak past the plug.
While you are already in there, would you suggest replaced the valve steam seals since they are known to fail on these cars? (car has 100k miles)
Every 7 series of those years has that idler pulley if it is preventing you from moving alternator remove it
Hmm. That's easier said than done. Thanks for the reply. I was able to get it out (10 minutes ago) with the proper pry bar and some choice words. Oh, and thanks for the super detailed video. I never would have gotten this far without it.
26:36 what are the parts he got the right bank, under the lid, 3 pieces
Spark plug tubes
@@Zeiten thank you
I just stripped the torx 25 (the ones on each side of the valvetronic motor) what is the best way to get them out? Mine was really tight and i sprayed them and was very carefull but they just stripped right away. What is best way to get them out now?.. So far everything else is going good!
Take 8mm(i think) 6 point socket as I remember and hammer it to this bolt, happened to me lots of times
@@Zeiten This method worked perfectly, if anyone else have the same problem i suggest doing like Zeiten said. Just try keeping the socket straight over the bolt and hammer it all the way down! i used a 8mm.
Great video. Thanks for the knowledge. Hey how much should something like this cost in total? Lmk please so I have an idea before I take my bmw in
Thank you, it depends on where you at, i would range it between 700$ to 1000$ total for parts and labor
Did u ever make a video for the altenator bracket seal?
Yes the video has been shot, we just have too many cars to fix, no time to edit it and upload but i'll get to it soon
In many cases on gasoline E65 it’s the IVM Module, there is a soldering Point of a Relais goes bad and no start is possible
This was very useful thank you so much
Have you removed front cover? My lower timing guide broke while removing head but I found misfire. Valve wasn't seated good. But yeah now this.
Thanks for this video good job !
Can you replace the timing cover gaskets without having to replace the head cover gaskets? I didn’t know much about it and just took my car to a shop and asked to replace the head cover gaskets recently, but still leaking oil. And leaking coolant too. Very frustrated....Thanks for the video!!!
hi, yes it is possible
Thank you for this informative video!
How much more work is it to remove the heads? Are all the head bolts fairly easy to get to?
Смотрю видео на английском, что бы подтягивать, думал у меня крыша поехала при фразе "птички поют". Подумал неужели такой автоматизм в голове на перевод😅😅😅
😁
Happy New Year Tim,
Thanks for your previous response.
Chip
Check the video again, just screw those all the way everything is normal
@@Zeiten Will do my man! I'll let you know the outcome...thanks
Tim,
Hope you're having a good day. Thanks for the advice...all back together and no codes!...Unfortunately, it looks like this one also has a alternator bracket gasket leak...UGH!...where do you source this gasket(maker) and will I need anything else when i go in there? Thanks Chip
Well you can find the video of this job here too on this channel, I explained everything there
Thanks for the video all tho I broke one of the eccentric sensors by accident I just replaced by them both but it was better to know how to take stuff apart better than breaking everything
Thanks can u do a video on transmission fluid change
Yes, transmission fluid change with mechatronic seal replacement video will be here later
I promise if you could come to fix mine to Georgia I would pay your plane ticket and stay 😂
May be some day we’ll franchise in Georgia😉😁
After changing cover gasked I have camshaft error bank 2 help
I just unplugged the sensors
Great demonstration but try to change the camera with one that focuses better
I got a small leak on the top of my timing cover gasket for now I’m just going to put gasket maker on it
My question : what all do I have to take off or unplug to take off the timing cover ?my car is a 2007 bmw 550i
And does this car have Vanos solenoids on both sides so 4 in total 2 on each head ?
Hi and thanks for a very informative video. Can you please specify all the parts that you changed?
Sure, valve cover gasket kit, upper timing chain cover gaskets, vacuum pump o-ring, and oil pressure switch
Hi I have 02 BMW 745LI I'm changing out Val cover gaskets Should the gasket fit flush Or should it fit a little high
Merry Christmas Tim,
Hope you are doing well. Quick question. I am doing the same job on a 2007 650i. Wondering if you have any clearance tips on what else I'll need to move out of the way. Looks to be a bit tighter than the 745li. Thanks so much,
Chip
Hi, thank you, it’s exactly the same but you might need to remove reinforcement bars, easy to do
How do you replace the passenger side timing bolt tensioner
Hello great video ! I have a question, my x5 smokes while on idle does that mean I need new valve cover gaskets or what do you think it's the problem ? Thanks for your help and everything you do!
With v8 most likely valve stem seals not valve cover gaskets
Thanks again for a very fast answer!
So if the valve cover bolts don’t screw right on , that means it’s not seated properly ? I have one that feels proper but I’m having to put a lot of pressure for the bolts to catch the thread .
Correct, rear bottom bolts/nuts are the hardest
On the valve cover there are 3 red tabs in the bottom side of it. I broke one of those red tabs can I order these parts online? What are they called and what is their purpose?
Excellent video, thank you i wish you were here in Connecticut. any special process to put back the valvetronic motors
Thank you, no nothing special there at all
You guys should expand to the north east
@@amex1997 we will eventually:)
Do the valve, Tronic motors have to be set in any sort of way when reinstalling??
No
Where are you big guy.?
At 31:23 he says that the longer you let it sit the better, so I let mine sit in the sun for 50 years before continuing the job, thinking it would be the best ever, and now my new gasket is dried out and brittle, so I have to get a new gasket again! Thanks a lot Zeiten! Smh 😒
you are welcome:)))))
U have to remove the alternator or just loosen it
Hi, I replaced my passenger side valve cover gasket but its still leaking at the bottom back cover. I tightened all the bolts until it won’t turn anymore. Please help how can I fix this problem. Thanks.
Ok I'd love to see it I've seen a a few but not In detail as if u dont have a lift to do so
why did you replace the oil pressure switch? and if we are in there anyway, shouldn't we replace the spark plugs?
😂 v12 is not too complicated in some ways even easier than v8, may be we’ll grow big enough to open up in the uk😉
@@Zeiten thank you, i will try get them out before removing cover. But its the ignition coil thats closest to driver side so hard to see !
Hi I have a 2004 BMW 745Li I changed out the two cvv valves out do to smoke coming out of tail pipe that did not stop smoke. Everytime I start car it blows smoke and sometimes turns off when car is on and in park do you know what else it can be?
Valve stem seals
Any trick to put the bottom nuts (smaller) ones back? Cant get them to thread back on the bolts, especially one in the back. Thinking about ordering a couple of longer one's to make it easier. Any suggestions?
Valve cover has to sit properly in order to put those back, you can try using old grommet and then put new ones, after that remove one bolt with old grommet and use new grommet there
Thank you for the suggestion! Using old grommets first and then replacing with new grommets one by one made it a lot easier.
Happy to help
Put it all back together and started the car. Smoke coming out of engine after a few minutes. Does it mean gasket didn't seal or may be I overtightened it?.
Just let it burn, all spilled oil burning i would say it’s normal unless there is large oil leak
I was told to disconnect the battery by taking off the positive terminal in front of the engine that included the alternator. Is this right or do I actually have to disconnect the battery completely
Absolutely wrong, disconnect negative from the battery in the trunk, the only way
@@Zeiten awesome thank you
I've a question, is blown head gasket means the valve gaskets that you just replaced in the video, or something else, I'm experiencing white smoke and recently coolant leaking and the motor is shaking hard, I thought it's maybe the coils ignitions but I'm not expert. I've BMW 745li 2002. Kindly advice
white smoke most likely valve stem seals, valve cover gaskets and head gasket are completely different things, do you see where coolant is leaking?
@@Zeiten unfortunately I don't see from where the leak is coming, I just saw it underneath the car, so how to determine if the issue in the head gasket or the valve head gasket, plus you didn't told me if the chaking motor due to misfires or regarding to the same gasket issue. If you have a video explaining the deference between them, I'd be appreciated if you send me the link. Thank you
@@moraslan9945 it is impossible to diagnose the car without seeing it, i recommend you to get it properly inspected
@@Zeiten my last question is, does BlueDevil head gasket sealer or any other similar products can work at least as a temporary fix?
@@moraslan9945 in my experience they don't work at all, i also don't think you have head gasket issue, but inspection by a professional is in order
Thanks
if the dash lights are blinking when trying to start first of all check your battery, moat likely it's dead, try jump start
Hi Tim!
Im Richie!
Tell me please how much is it cost 2003 760 il cambelt set with neccessery surronding replacement.
Take how long time?
hey do you have a video of a 7 series head gasket replacement?
Nope, won't have it here
I have 3 questions
1. Did you have to put silicone on the vacuum pump when putting it back?
2. Why was there silicone on the vacuum pump to begin with?
3. Is there an oil pressure switch on the right side also, or only on the left? Thanks
No silicone needed, it was there because someone put there before, and oil pressure switch is only on passenger side
How did you do the timing chain
anyone know torque specs for valve cover and spark plugs??? please @ ME
Hi
What engine oil you recomend to bmw 750i with N62b48 engine?
5w40 or mayby 5w50,5w60?
Thanks for you video are very helpfull
Depends on where you live, here in California 5 or 10w-30(40) castrol edge is perfect, as a rule in general i would say castrol edge, liqui moly or motul are a great choice
I have white smoke coming from the back of the engine on the passenger side. There is also misfiring. Any idea?
possible valve cover gasket leak, misfire might not be related to the leak, can be as simple as ignition coil
Is possible to change da timing chain gasket with out removing da valve cover??
Yes it is possible
Is there a reason why you waited to disconnect the negative battery terminal? By the way thanks for making this video
For this job you don’t really need to disconnect the battery, but it is a good practice to do so for any repair
with the battery connected the fuel pump will prime when you open any of the doors. Since he disconnected the fuel return line opening the door would spray fuel everywhere with the battery connected
