If my memory serves me - about getting gems and stuff - if you die half way through the level, and then backtrack to get the other respawned boxes, it actually doesn't count anyway! If you get to the end of a stage without dying, Crash jumps in the air and goes to the 'box counting' screen - but dying even once and getting to the end causes Crash to sigh in relief and go straight back to the map. Doesn't matter if you backtrack. Die once, no 'box counting' screen. I found that out the hard way. If memory serves, anyway!
Oh MAN, I completely forgot about that! I'm so used to resetting the stage after dying just once that I forgot one of the main reasons why I did so in the first place. Thank you dude.
Sir, you have COMPLETELY nailed the frustration of 100% completing the game because of the checkpoints. It's exactly the same frustration you get in Yoshi's Island.
well to be fair this is a short game and hes not recording much like the ps1 review when he had to find/obtain and record a bunch of games, editing takes time yes but only if your making fancy edits like johns hilarious animations instead of inserting a movie clip like "thank you and goodnight"
Helvetica Neue Just curious: what genres of games do you like? Judging from this comment, you don't like a lot of games. You ALWAYS go from point A to point B in games. Especially in linear platformers like these.
Man, it's kinda funny that about a year ago I actually did video reviews for the Crash Trilogy, and now a year later one of my fav Video Game Reviewers and LPers finally got to do a review of Crash too! Seriously, great job on this one Johnny. =) (btw I love that little Drum Fill Segment near the beginning)
Dude, your videos are so frickin' awesome! So entertaining to watch. And I especially like that you do so many of the platforming types of titles, since those are my favorites. THANK YOU!!
Crash has always been one of my favourite series alongside the Sonic-series and Mario-series, glad to see he finally gets his place on the best channel. :) I feel like you only review games i like, and no other channel has entertained me as much as this. I just watched your classic Sonic-reviews last year, i hit the subscribe-button, and i never regret the first time i clicked on one of your videos. I know you most likely wont see this comment, but thank you for making great reviews! :D
One of your best, John. Up there with SA1, 06, and MP3C for me. As far as I'm concerned, you're only improving with time, so I'm looking forward to your next two vids with joyously high expectations.
Instead of just doing a Crash marathon, could you do a Naughty Dog marathon? First the Crash trilogy, then the Jak trilogy, followed by the Uncharted trilogy, and finally The Last of Us.
Oh my god Johnny I swear to god you're one of the first to pronounce Aku Aku correctly. I keep watching other UA-camrs, but for one reason or another they have very weird ways of pronouncing his name. So props to you man.
Crash Bandicoot was my childhood hero. All I ever really played on PS1. So glad you're doing a marathon on these wonderful games. I never beat the first Crash until I bought it again a few years back. Back when I was younger, I found it a scary game, especially Tawna's in-game model with that huge smile. The sequels are where the series really shines.
This game reminds me of Saturday morning cartoons (for some reason). Definitely a fun game. I remember the 2nd one being a big improvement on the first, so I look forward to that review. As far as breaking boxes goes, I no longer have the patience for breaking 1,000 boxes, collecting 100 skulltulas or 120 stars. That collection stuff was an element of early 3D gaming that I got bored with very quickly.
This is still a very good game today. I still prefer Super Mario 64 over Crash 1, but its still good. The only big flaw besides the depth perception is requiring players to complete the bonus level to save.
Fun fact: as we'll see at Crash 2's intro, the regular ending of Crash 1 is considered canon because Cortex is seen falling from his hoverboard, whereas the 100% ending claims that Cortex disappeared. However, the 100% ending does state what happened to the game's bosses after Crash rescued Tawna. While it's unknown whether or not most of these aftermath stories are true, Ripper Roo's aftermath has some truth to it. He got "cured" of his madness and went on to become a writer (Dr. Roo), which can be seen in Crash 2.
I love coming back to these Johnny Vs videos, I love retro gaming and honestly I'm basing my channel around that in the future and i for one was wondering which crash game outta the 3 was johnny's favorite but I'm watching all the videos to find out! Can't wait to go down memory lane!
While Im sure you will review Jak sometime so Im not gonna ask about that, have you played the games yet Johnny? Great review my friend, just as you convinced me to get into metroid Im hoping this series will do the same.
Man, i played all three on my Psone when i was a child and i'd have to say that this is the most platform heavy out of them all and for me the most memorable because of its difficulty. The foggy bridge level was the biggest pain to get past for me. Nonetheless this game introduced me to an entirely new platforming world and it was fun to complete them all 100%
I suggest you try to use your audio equipment as 'linear' as possible. The jump from 1:05 quality to 1:15 quality made it seem like your first microphone wasn't up to par (Though your second microphone sounds great! Is it a Yeti?) It you could find a way to use that second microphone throughout your videos, it would probably increase the overall quality. Still a great video overall, as always!
The Microphone in the beginning comes from the camera itself, I don't have one of those clip-on mikes, nor do I have a high-end camera. Maybe in a few hundred years. But the second Mike is a Samson C01U, which I plan on replacing sometime this year. Thanks for watching Sunny. :)
It's all good! Your videos are still obviously nice and well edited, the quality is well above average UA-cam. If you are ever interested in buying a good camera with a quality built in mic you might want to check Craigslist for a Canon Rebel. T3i, or T2i (they're the same thing, one has an adjustable screen). Sometimes you can get them as low as $250. Happy filming!
John, you are probably now, my favorite UA-camr to date, covering everything I like, doing Let's Plays over all the games I like, you are absolutely amazing...!!!!
The crates in the game were made to fill in the more boring parts of the levels. The character of Tawna was initially removed from the series due to some complaints from the marketing director at Universal Interactive Studios. In her point of view, the initial character design for Tawna was too outrageous, so Tawna was re-designed before being built into the game. Naughty Dog thought the ending result was too different from what they had in mind, so she was ultimately removed in the sequels. The game was later implemented in "Crash Bandicoot N. Same Trilogy" as a downloadable DLC. Originally, a traditionally-animated sequence was meant to serve as the game's intro. I got all 3 games from PSN because of a sale ($3 in total). So far I'm up to the 2nd game but holy shit I can literally smell the nostalgia as I'm playing.
Very cool review! Loved that rimshot lol. I was always more into Spyro but I played Crash every now and then too. I always thought it was cool that Crash had unique death animations based on what killed him, that's something you never saw back then or even all that much today.
RafaGamersProductions Sonic 2 on the Master System. There are 4 bad things about it. 1. It's almost as glitchy as Sonic 06 2. It's EXTREMELY stingy with rings 3. The bosses are annoying because you have no rings 4. If you don't get the best ending... Tails DIES.
I've just recently heard - Crash Bandicoot is going to be in the next Skylanders game... for the PS4 version. Only a few people I know of dislike this.
I love john's videos. It's gaming channels like these that make me want to make youtube videos. I do let's Plays, and he does reviews but I still see inspiration for a new channel. Thanks for the inspiration!
+Josuke Higashikata yes, yes it is. You wouldn't be able to see it, but it's captioned "It was me, Diego!" (Bit ironic considering there's already a Diego Brando). See, I'm half Mexican, and I love JoJo's so I thought that it could fit for me.
Tell me about it. I chose it knowing exactly what it would do to my integrity. Some say it defines me as immature. I say it defines me as having a sense of humour.
I only had 3 games for the PS1. This game, Hercules and Croc (Possible sub title here). My god i played those so much. I couldn't read at the time, so i always called Crash for "The man who spins on boxes and crabs"
It was the first time I played both the very first Crash Bandicoot game and the Crash Bandicoot: Cortex Strikes Back then when I was a kid after we moved to our step dad’s house. I never got to beat this game and heard of the third crash game but now as an adult for 18 years later, I finally got 3 of the Crash Bandicoot PS1 games and I beaten all 3 of them at last when I was 25 years old back in 2017 and 2018.
Excellent Review! Not as long as the previous ones, which doesn't detract from the overall quality of the review. Well done. I hope that these shorter reviews take you less time overall so you can finish them at a faster rate. Keep it up, Johnny!
joão carlos You can tell what the improvements are after playing Crash 2/3 but to be honest, the slightly more 'slippery' or 'heavy' controls can be gotten used to. Mastering them is the trick to achieving 100%. Once you adjust, the controls feel perfectly fine, just takes a bit of practice to learn what not to do. xD
I think the original Crash Bandicoot is a really good game… when you aren’t going for 100% completion. It’s a hard game just playing normally but going for 100% on the PS1 version is one of the most painful video game experiences
Holy fuck man I'm so excited you covered this game. Crash bandicoot was literally the base of my main childhood games. I had the racing game of it, and another one with story mode where u could run
I 100% this game for the first time a couple weeks ago! Man, that was not easy, but there was only a few levels that really gave me trouble. Fumbling in the Dark, I'm lookin' at you!
I've completed this game so many times it's not that difficult to me anymore. Easy to do in one sitting. Or used to. Haven't played PS1 versions after 2018.
I gotta play this series sometime. I've watched my older brother play the 2nd game and a demo of the 1st game and it looked challenging and fun. That was way in the 90's though and I no longer have a Playstation.
Crash Bandicoot... oddly enough, I was familiar with Crash since Twinsanity, but never played a Crash game until summer of 2013. The first game was the last one I completed, and holy shit, was it hard. I was spoiled from Crash 2 and 3, so going back to the original without the slide, double jump, and Crash Dash felt odd. Regardless, I played the game, and it was okay for the most part. My main issue is the Gem collecting. I hate the Gems in this game, and this is the only time I never got all of the Gems. I've only played Crash 1-3, and games like CTR, Wrath of Cortex, and Twinsanity are in my future line up, and from what I've played of the series, I really like Crash Bandicoot. My favorite game in that series is Warped, mainly because of the power ups Crash gets. Oh, double jump, how I love you so! :)
2:05 now that was a funny little cut. I know in earlier videos you said your humor skits would come off as corny, but that was really simple, really well done. Do more like that.
*****
Damn it, Manuel!
Caddy, why are you suddenly commenting on Johnny's videos?
Are you.....hinting at something?
You shmuk, where is our spyro retrospective???
Oh MAN, I completely forgot about that! I'm so used to resetting the stage after dying just once that I forgot one of the main reasons why I did so in the first place. Thank you dude.
This game is hard!
That drum clip was perfect.
2:05 BEST. THING. EVER
THANK YOU, & GOODNIGHT!!!
ENCORE.
As a musician, you love to see it. 😂
This video was crate
I thought I told you to go to your room.
I know I already asked a but I have to know because it's so good do you have billy hatcher!?
+SomecallmeJohnny Lonely Goomba doesn't have a room, he's stuck between two pipes
+Bryan A. and he is going to play his video game for the rest of his life.
Finnny funny XD
2:06 One of the best Johnny moments ever!
That dance at 4:24 is so funny. I would have never thought to dance like that to the Aku Aku song lmao.
laughed so hard at that.
He looks paranoid because he's scared of boulders and traps...
Along with bears, dinosaurs and other mutants, not to mention mad scientists
Lol I love the dancing at 4:26!
What are you doing here! I love your channel!
4:28-4:30
This needs to be a gif :D
Sonic's A$$ game:
Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric
*cough* Sonic '06 *cough*
Anibal Morales Oh yeah! I change my mind then! Sorry!
Fire & Ice is a thing. Dear God...
+Spidertendo 64 nah sonic 06 is better
+Spidertendo 64 Sonic CD or Sonic Colors
Sir, you have COMPLETELY nailed the frustration of 100% completing the game because of the checkpoints. It's exactly the same frustration you get in Yoshi's Island.
Crash Bandicoot is turning 20 this year.
1996 - 2016
Awesome! Hopefully they do a 20th anniversary
+DaJoshy Crash Bandicoot died years ago friendo.
Ripley Johnson its the anniversary. they have to revive him
Carl Bloke Well get the shovel then, we got an old ass corpse to dig up.
Ripley Johnson yep
Used to play this with my friends as a child, had a "hand over the controller on death" rule. Managed a zero death run.
Wow, this came out fast!
gottagofast
hopefully he does the sly cooper series as well *****
well to be fair this is a short game and hes not recording much like the ps1 review when he had to find/obtain and record a bunch of games, editing takes time yes but only if your making fancy edits like johns hilarious animations instead of inserting a movie clip like "thank you and goodnight"
Jak Saward was that a Sonic X reference?
adolfhipster97 That would be cool.
Crash was like Sony's Mario.
It's a shame he never survived, It seems cutscene heavy games with barely any gameplay is Sony's new mascot.
Heavy Rain, Uncharted, and the Last of Us.
Helvetica Neue
Uncharted? Fucking Uncharted? What do you want, no cutscenes at all?
What games are "cutscene heavy with barely any gameplay"
Darkstar
Yeah, I play games for their gameplay, not so I look at a pretty background when I go from point A to point B to get to the next cutscene.
(btw I love that little Drum Fill Segment near the beginning)
Dude, your videos are so frickin' awesome! So entertaining to watch. And I especially like that you do so many of the platforming types of titles, since those are my favorites. THANK YOU!!
This little orange guy is a big part of my childhood. Crash 1 was the first PS1 game I've ever played.
One of your best, John. Up there with SA1, 06, and MP3C for me. As far as I'm concerned, you're only improving with time, so I'm looking forward to your next two vids with joyously high expectations.
2:09, might be the greatest moment in SomeCallMeJohnny history. Very nice.
Instead of just doing a Crash marathon, could you do a Naughty Dog marathon? First the Crash trilogy, then the Jak trilogy, followed by the Uncharted trilogy, and finally The Last of Us.
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! :DDDDDDDDDDDD
will personaly i like this idea thats quite a ammount of games but i wouldent mind it
Fantastic idea!
That would take waaaay too long. He has not even done that with Metroid, his favorite franchise period.
yeah thats my midset on this
GREAT! start to the Crash Bandicoot marathon Johnny.
Oh hell yeah! This is going to be freaking epic!
i remember seeing your vids way back, like years. the black tyranno boss video on chrono trigger helped me so much. thank you saved me frustration.
Well hell yeah.
Fredrick Lucero Yep. Thank you Frederick. I appreciate it.
***** It's so ironic that i always see you jose and ***** . We're TheMegaManDatsWassupFormer Posse xD
2:02 And I'm sure that you would know which games would be worthy of that title?
"Specially marked boxes"
I never thought about that phrasing until now, and it's hilarious.
Oh my god Johnny I swear to god you're one of the first to pronounce Aku Aku correctly. I keep watching other UA-camrs, but for one reason or another they have very weird ways of pronouncing his name. So props to you man.
It's probably just accents. Like english accents make it sound like Ahku Ahku
Us Finns have just a dull way of pronouncing it.
That was an amazing rimshot.
"hey, you wanna play sonics ass game?"
"sure, *which one?*"
*BUDUM TSS*
06
sonic secret rings (i like its story though, the gameplay is just slippery at times. still *kinda* fun though)
Thank you and good night!
sonic labyrinth.
secret rings or labyrinth?
2:04 Best part!
Bahaha I laughed a little too hard at the "sonic's ass" part LOL
Hmmm, Johnny's PSN icon is of Bentley from the Sly Cooper series. I think he enjoyed doing that voice a little bit much....
Great review man! Crash Bandicoot is my favorite franchise of all time and I wish a new Crash game would come out.
Now I know what codename Clement will give to Sonic '06.
Doesn't he already call it SA3?...
Technically that was what he thought it should've been called.

It's really nice seeing you reviewing the Crash Bandicoot franchise Johnny, can't wait for the Crash 2 review!
While Im sure you will review Jak sometime so Im not gonna ask about that, have you played the games yet Johnny?
Great review my friend, just as you convinced me to get into metroid Im hoping this series will do the same.

4:24 OMG ME TOO I LOVED THAT THEME
1:00 this aged like a fine wine
This is probably your best review yet Johnny! I loved the background info you gave and felt it added to the review. Keep up the excellent work!
I love Crash but I always liked Spyro more, who was sort of his brother/rival franchise. Looking forward to you reviewing the other games!
I'd definitely say brothers. There was never really a rivalry between the two, just mutual respect.
John, you are probably now, my favorite UA-camr to date, covering everything I like, doing Let's Plays over all the games I like, you are absolutely amazing...!!!!
CRASH IS BACK, BABYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Inkwell there has never been a better day to be on this sweet green beautiful planet of ours earth!
I remember being impressed by the graphics back when this game was first released, and that's about as far as my admiration went.
Dat Sonic roast. XD
So many memories... thank you!
Is it me, or does this game look better than I remember?
It could be because he's recording from his PS3, so the quality will look better than it looked from a late 90's CRT.
Ps3 has a smoothing factor

In every game, Crash never speaks a word of English. However, if you watch this game's intro where Crash escapes Dr. Cortex's castle, Crash says, "uh-oh".
Nice review. I've only played the third game, though.
Play the second on an emulator! It's great!
I've only played the second.
I got all 3 games from PSN because of a sale ($3 in total). So far I'm up to the 2nd game but holy shit I can literally smell the nostalgia as I'm playing.
I LOVE the 3rd one!
Very cool review! Loved that rimshot lol. I was always more into Spyro but I played Crash every now and then too. I always thought it was cool that Crash had unique death animations based on what killed him, that's something you never saw back then or even all that much today.
2:02 Another nickname for Sonic 06!
And Sonic 2 MS
Giordan Diodato Wait? That's a bad game?
RafaGamersProductions Sonic 2 on the Master System. There are 4 bad things about it.
1. It's almost as glitchy as Sonic 06
2. It's EXTREMELY stingy with rings
3. The bosses are annoying because you have no rings
4. If you don't get the best ending... Tails DIES.
Giordan Diodato And there's a zone which has the word 'gimmick' in it.
Giordan Diodato I like the sms versions

Damn you SGB, my sides hurt so much because of that.
KEEP DOING IT PLEASE.
Can we get a spyro marathon please?
Oussama Okbi We probably won't since he doesn't like Sypro.
@@godofwar234regi5 Its not that he doesn't like Spyro. He just didn't play it yet.
Johnny has reached Bro level for being a fan of Crash. :D
I've just recently heard - Crash Bandicoot is going to be in the next Skylanders game... for the PS4 version. Only a few people I know of dislike this.
Plus remakes of Crash 1,2, and 3
This marathon was 6 years ago? God damn, I loved watching these as they dropped lol
Now that you've done Crash…We. Need. Spyro. hahaXD
Getting those boxes is like getting the rings in the special stages from Sonic 2!
heh, admittingly I hope he reviews the Spyro the Dragon trilogy!
I love john's videos. It's gaming channels like these that make me want to make youtube videos. I do let's Plays, and he does reviews but I still see inspiration for a new channel. Thanks for the inspiration!
C R A S H I S B A C K B O Y S
:D
As a Skylanders character.
*TRIGGERED*
Is that DIO in a Mexican getup
+Josuke Higashikata yes, yes it is. You wouldn't be able to see it, but it's captioned "It was me, Diego!" (Bit ironic considering there's already a Diego Brando). See, I'm half Mexican, and I love JoJo's so I thought that it could fit for me.
HES BACK REALLY CRASH IS BACK!!!!!!!!!
Crash Bandicoot my first ever 3D game I played, my first in the Crash series, and my first PS1 game in general! Seriously in 1st Grade no less!
I want a new Crash game! *cries* Also good video!
I absolutely loved the "thank you and good night line." so much.
Will you ever review Ratchet and Clank 1, 2 and 3?
My childhood missed this series, but months ago I started playing the Naughty Dog and non-Naughty Dog titles and love them all pretty much.
2:02 well thats something new
3:59 I thought of cereal when you said, "inside specially marked boxes," too.
I bought a ps1 for spyro
spyro ftw
I got a PlayStation 1 for both Spyro and Crash
This was hilarious!
Made my night :3
Johnny: Thank you! :D Annnnd goodnight~! *ba-dum-tish mic drop walkaway* x) ^_^
Any thoughts on the N. Sane Trilogy, Johnny?
Tell me about it. I chose it knowing exactly what it would do to my integrity. Some say it defines me as immature. I say it defines me as having a sense of humour.
Crash's Underwear He actually just uploaded it.
I miss this game so much! I would do anything just to play it one more time!
I think my first PS1 game was Spyro the Dragon
my first videogame was Crash Bandicoot 1, 2, 3, Team Racing and Bash, then Spyro
My first ps1 game was Batman & Robin...
You poor...poor soul
I only had 3 games for the PS1. This game, Hercules and Croc (Possible sub title here). My god i played those so much. I couldn't read at the time, so i always called Crash for "The man who spins on boxes and crabs"
Apple Stormy that should've been the actual title
It was the first time I played both the very first Crash Bandicoot game and the Crash Bandicoot: Cortex Strikes Back then when I was a kid after we moved to our step dad’s house. I never got to beat this game and heard of the third crash game but now as an adult for 18 years later, I finally got 3 of the Crash Bandicoot PS1 games and I beaten all 3 of them at last when I was 25 years old back in 2017 and 2018.
1:56 sonic 06/forces in a nutshell
Excellent Review! Not as long as the previous ones, which doesn't detract from the overall quality of the review. Well done. I hope that these shorter reviews take you less time overall so you can finish them at a faster rate. Keep it up, Johnny!
I should try this game sometime. Havent played a Crash game in like 9 years o_O
***** Yeah, Ive heard of its flaws. Im gonna play it again sometime though!
joão carlos You can tell what the improvements are after playing Crash 2/3 but to be honest, the slightly more 'slippery' or 'heavy' controls can be gotten used to.
Johnny you are fantastic!
I always loved the spin sound he made in these earlier games!
bring back the ratings!
What about slipery climb, I have the nsane trilogy version and I am still stuck in that level
I've completed this game so many times it's not that difficult to me anymore. Easy to do in one sitting. Or used to. Haven't played PS1 versions after 2018.
I remember this game. My brother got it and we played it. Brings back my childhood. Great review :) I love if you do more crash games. :)
Crash 1 is HAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDD
Yeah, I know it's nowhere near as hard as Castlevania 3. I just wanted to reference the Castlevania 3 review. :P
you mean the must challenging one
It's the other way around for me, I could never get all the gems in the other games. But this one I could.
Can't wait for you to do CTR. I love that game. Probably my favorite racing game I've ever played
waat about spyyyro johnyyyy
2:05 now that was a funny little cut. I know in earlier videos you said your humor skits would come off as corny, but that was really simple, really well done. Do more like that.
2:01 LMAO
All I can say is, I can't wait for your review on the sequels. Love, love, LOVE, Crash Bandicoot.
